class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, I have explored the Word of God through several series. In 2018, we looked at the story of love in 1 Corinthians 13. In 2018 and 2019, we had the opportunity to go through the Ten Commandments in a course titled &#8220;The Ten Commandments Through the Eyes of the Gospel.&#8221; Last year, in 2020, we studied the proper understanding of the Book of Revelation through an expository series. As I was planning which series to begin 2021 with, I decided that we should examine the eight blessings in Matthew 5, often called the Beatitudes, looking at them one by one to receive grace. Are you looking forward to it? I am looking forward to it very much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, for our first session, I want to look at the theme of &#8220;the poor in spirit.&#8221; <strong>Matthew 5:3 (ESV)<\/strong> records: <strong>\u201cBlessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.\u201d<\/strong> It says that the poor in spirit are blessed, but what on earth does it mean to be &#8220;poor in spirit&#8221;? We understand what it means to be poor. Being poor means having no money and lacking sufficient financial ability. However, what is expressed in Matthew 5:3 does not refer to simply being poor because of a lack of money or being financially destitute; it uses the expression &#8220;poor in spirit.&#8221; Therefore, we must examine this word while agonizing over what it truly means to be poor in spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word used here for &#8220;spirit&#8221; in &#8220;poor in spirit&#8221; is the Greek word <strong>&#8220;Pneuma.&#8221;<\/strong> This word <em>Pneuma<\/em> can be translated as &#8220;spirit&#8221; or &#8220;mind\/heart.&#8221; Thus, it can be translated as &#8220;poor in spirit&#8221; or &#8220;poor in heart,&#8221; which is why it seems to have been translated as &#8220;the poor in spirit.&#8221; This word <em>Pneuma<\/em> is also used where it says, &#8220;God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.&#8221; God is <em>Pneuma<\/em>, so we must worship in <em>Pneuma<\/em>\u2014worship in spirit. Also, when Jesus said, &#8220;Unless one is born of the spirit\u2014born again spiritually\u2014he cannot see the kingdom of God,&#8221; this is the very word He used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is the meaning of this word that we must be poor in spirit, that the <em>Pneuma<\/em> must be poor? First, to understand this word, it is not saying that we must be materially or financially poor\u2014that we must become like beggars\u2014to be blessed. This is obvious. This is because the expression of this word does not say that &#8220;the poor&#8221; are blessed, but that &#8220;the poor in spirit&#8221; are blessed. It is not saying that you must have no money, live like a beggar, or be financially destitute to be blessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, as we understand today\u2019s text, the first thing I hope you do not misunderstand is that this means &#8220;You cannot be rich; you must live poorly like a beggar to be blessed.&#8221; However, if we look at Christian history, poverty has been regarded as a very important virtue that believers should pursue. Throughout Christian history, numerous believers have thought, &#8220;We must be poor; we must not live as the rich; we must live a life of &#8216;clean poverty&#8217; (cheong-bin) and live like beggars for that to be truly living like a child of God.&#8221; Such a misunderstanding has persisted throughout our history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, the people who made such claims were those involved in the monastic movement. The monastic movement is one that has appeared frequently in Christian history. It was especially popular between the 4th and 6th centuries, and a second monastic movement broke out between the 11th and 12th centuries. Even if you go to the Catholic Church today, this monastic movement is still maintained. In various orders such as the Benedictines, Jesuits, or Marists, people become monastics and live their whole lives in poverty, remaining celibate without marrying, not pursuing wealth, and giving up everything in this world to enter a monastery. There, they eat small amounts of food, own no personal property, meditate only on the Bible, devote themselves to prayer, and practice silent discipline. This monastic movement, which believes such a life is a holy life of offering oneself entirely to God, still remains in the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we see these monastics who have laid down all greed for the world, completely given up life in this world, entered monasteries to live truly poorly, doing only the Lord&#8217;s work, immersing themselves only in spiritual matters, and living in silent discipline\u2014we general, secular believers feel a deep sense of respect. When ordinary people who are stained with greed and struggling over the things of this world look at such people, their heads naturally bow, just as one bows when seeing monks practicing a life of &#8220;non-possession&#8221; in Buddhism. We think of them as truly great and respectable people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But is living in this way truly a desirable form of life? Is it the form of life God wants from us? We must ask the question of whether this is a form of life appropriate for the word &#8220;poor in spirit.&#8221; Unfortunately, such a way of life stems from a great misunderstanding of the Christian Gospel. In fact, if you read the Bible, there are many passages that might lead to such a misunderstanding. For example, when a young ruler came to Jesus, Jesus told him this. <strong>Matthew 19:21 (ESV)<\/strong> says: <strong>\u201cJesus said to him, \u2018If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.\u2019\u201d<\/strong> Since He told the rich ruler to give all his money to the poor and follow Him, it is a word that can make one mistakenly believe that to follow the Lord, one must not have money and must throw away all material things, as if that were the only valuable way to be a person of faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, Jesus also said this. Continuing in <strong>Matthew 19:23\u201324 (ESV)<\/strong>: <strong>\u201cAnd Jesus said to his disciples, \u2018Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.\u2019\u201d<\/strong> If understood literally, a rich person cannot go to heaven. Since He said it is harder for a rich man to enter heaven than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle\u2014but can a camel go through the eye of a needle? It is impossible, right?\u2014and since He said it is more impossible than that impossible thing, if we look only at this word, a rich person can never enter. Then what must one do? This is a word that is easy to misunderstand as meaning one must throw everything away and become poor to enter heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This word does not mean that we must truly become poor to go to heaven. What Jesus wants to address through this word is the question of who is the God we serve: <strong>&#8220;Whom are you serving as God?&#8221;<\/strong> He is dealing with that issue. Is the material wealth you have now your god, or are you truly serving the LORD God as your God? The Lord is examining this matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some people, material things can be their god. It is similar to the case of Abraham. One day, God spoke a bolt-from-the-blue word to Abraham, who was living with the son he had at age 100: &#8220;Abraham, take your son, your only son Isaac, and offer him as a burnt offering to me.&#8221; At that time, Abraham made a resolution to obey God\u2019s word, took the child to Mount Moriah, and tried to offer him as a burnt offering. This was because, in his heart, facing the question of &#8220;Who is my God? Is my son my god or is the LORD God my God?&#8221; he tried to offer his child as a confession of faith that God is his God, not his son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At that moment, God did not allow Abraham to actually kill and offer Isaac, but told him again not to kill Isaac, not to lay a hand on him, and He returned Isaac to Abraham. Why did the God who told him to offer Isaac then tell him not to kill him? It is because for Abraham, Isaac was no longer an idol. When faced with the extreme choice of &#8220;God or Isaac,&#8221; Abraham made a confession of faith that Isaac was not his everything but God was his everything, and at that point, God returned Isaac to Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, the word Jesus spoke to this young ruler is the same. He said, &#8220;You must throw away your possessions,&#8221; but that was a test of this young man&#8217;s faith. Faced with the question of whether material wealth was his god or God was his God, unfortunately, this young ruler chose that he could live without God but not without material wealth. He made a confession that material things were his god and had no choice but to leave Jesus&#8217; presence. Therefore, you must not misunderstand this word literally to think that we must lack material things or be poor to go to heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in <strong>Luke 6:20 (ESV)<\/strong>, there is this word: <strong>\u201cAnd he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: \u2018Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.\u2019\u201d<\/strong> In Luke, it does not say &#8220;the poor in spirit,&#8221; but simply says &#8220;the poor&#8221; are blessed, with the word &#8220;spirit&#8221; omitted. In fact, the passage in Matthew 5:3 and Luke 6:20 are different expressions of the same words of Jesus. While Matthew clearly expresses that the &#8220;poor in spirit&#8221; are blessed, Luke says &#8220;the poor&#8221; are blessed with the word &#8220;spirit&#8221; missing. Then does Luke mean people who are truly financially poor? No, it does not. Luke is also not teaching that one must be materially poor to go to heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is because these words were given as a metaphor. When we read the Bible, we must check whether it is a metaphor or not. Almost all words use the language of this earth to represent spiritual truths. We should look at God&#8217;s spiritual truths, but we often make the mistake of understanding them only as earthly stories. For example, in Matthew 11:28, the Lord said: &#8220;Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.&#8221; This word is certainly not saying to delivery workers, &#8220;Is it hard delivering packages? I will let you rest.&#8221; It isn&#8217;t saying He will let you put down a heavy A-frame carrier; rather, on a spiritual level, it is said to people carrying the heavy burden of sin in life, &#8220;I will give you rest.&#8221; It is a word that must not be understood literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same goes for <strong>Isaiah 55:1 (ESV)<\/strong>: <strong>\u201cCome, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.\u201d<\/strong> This is not saying that if you go before God, He will give you mineral water or Coca-Cola; it is a word with a spiritual meaning that He will solve the hunger and thirst of all people who have spiritual thirst. It must not be understood literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is the true meaning of being &#8220;poor in spirit&#8221;? It means being in a state of despair where you can do nothing. Just as a poor person cannot obtain what is necessary for survival on their own, a person who is poor in spirit is one who goes before God with the heart of saying, &#8220;God, please help me. Please save me.&#8221; In the Bible, the Prodigal Son can be cited as an example of a person poor in spirit. After squandering everything and trying to fill his stomach with pig fodder, the only thing the Prodigal Son could do was hope for his father&#8217;s mercy. That state of returning with the desperate heart of &#8220;Father, have mercy on me and use me as one of your hired servants&#8221; is exactly the state of being poor in spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, it can be said to be like the state of the woman caught in the act of adultery in John 8. In a situation where she had no choice but to be stoned to death, the state of mind that entreats for mercy, thinking &#8220;Now I am dead; I have no hope,&#8221; is one who is poor in spirit. The reason such a person is called blessed is that, realizing they have no potential of their own, they know they can live only if God bestows mercy, and thus they look only to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The possibility of salvation comes from realizing the fact that I have no power of my own. As long as we think we can do something, we cannot go before God. It is only when we think, &#8220;I am completely bankrupt,&#8221; that we can say, &#8220;God, save me.&#8221; The reason it is said that it is hard for a rich man to enter heaven is that, because they have no lack and can solve everything with money, they often lack the desperation to rely on God. Only those who are poor in spirit and say, &#8220;God, save me,&#8221; go before God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, to express the &#8220;poor in spirit&#8221; in other words, it can be understood through <strong>Matthew 18:3\u20134 (ESV)<\/strong>: <strong>\u201cand said, \u2018Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.\u2019\u201d<\/strong> A child can do nothing by their own strength. They cannot obtain food or even handle their own physiological needs. Therefore, a child only looks at their mother and cries. The word of the Bible is that there is a blessing for those who cry out like a child, &#8220;God, I can do nothing, so please help me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the same as <strong>James 4:6 (ESV)<\/strong>: <strong>\u201cBut he gives more grace. Therefore it says, \u2018God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.\u2019\u201d<\/strong> The greatest danger in the life of faith is spiritual pride. A representative case of spiritual pride is the Pharisee. <strong>Luke 18:11\u201312 (ESV)<\/strong> records: <strong>\u201cThe Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: \u2018God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The religious life of the Pharisee was close to perfect, but he did not go out to seek mercy; he was full of contempt for others and self-boasting. Ultimately, because he was not a person who entered to ask God for help, he could not occupy the kingdom of God. Satan does not hinder us from being religiously passionate. He does not hinder a Pharisee from praying and fasting. He simply sows a proud heart after all those things are done, saying &#8220;I am perfect to this extent,&#8221; and ultimately causes ruin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who is the blessed one? It is the person who realizes the fact that they are a sinner who can do nothing spiritually and comes forward saying, &#8220;Heavenly Father, I have no other help, so I come with hands raised.&#8221; It is the one who tried to live holily but finds hatred and pride rising again, and realizing the weakness that leads to stumbling every moment without God&#8217;s grace, cries out, &#8220;Lord, if you reject me, where shall I go?&#8221; To such a person, God bestows grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A representative person who went before God like this is Jacob. In a desperate situation by the Ford of Jabbok, with his brother leading an army, Jacob clung to God. To the one who stands with the heart of <strong>\u201cI will not let you go unless you bless me\u201d (Genesis 32:26, ESV)<\/strong>, God bestows grace. God, who loved us so much that He gave His Son to the cross to save us, is watching to help us. I bless you in the name of the Lord that this year may be one of going before that love not with a proud heart, but with a spirit like a child, infinitely enjoying God\u2019s
