Amazing. I am impressed that you still remember. We looked at the story of a king named Abijam. Was King Abijam a good king or a bad king? He was a bad king. He did exactly as his father had done. And who was Abijam\u2019s father? It was King Rehoboam. We saw last time that he committed the same sins as Rehoboam. As we looked at that story, I believe you made a certain resolution in your hearts. What kind of resolution was it? &#8220;Ah, the way I live has a great impact on my children. So, how should I live? I must truly live by faith. I must live a life that exerts a good influence on my children.&#8221; I believe you made such a decision of faith last time with that sense of alertness. Did you do so? Only three people answered. I trust you all did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We had a time of resolution and decision last time, thinking that I must stand upright in faith so that not only I but also my children can stand upright in faith. However, today we are looking at the exact opposite story. The story we will examine today is about King Asa, the son of Abijam. Since Abijam was a bad king, we might imagine that there was a very high possibility of King Asa being a bad king as well. Yet, looking at the text today, surprisingly, King Asa did not become a bad king; rather, the Bible records that he acted according to God\u2019s heart, just like David.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it would be most natural for a bad king to come from under a bad king, it is quite extraordinary that King Asa, who grew up under a bad father\u2014King Abijam, who was considered a bad king for failing to live according to God\u2019s will\u2014surprisingly became a good king in the eyes of God. Looking again at 1 Kings 15:11-15, it says: <strong>&#8220;And Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as David his father had done. He put away the male cult prostitutes out of the land and removed all the idols that his fathers had made. He also removed Maacah his mother from being queen mother because she ha<sup><\/sup>d made an abominable image for Asherah. And Asa cut down her image and burned it in the Wadi Kidron. But the high places were not taken away. Nevertheless, the heart of Asa was wholly true to the Lord all his days. And he brought into the house of the Lord the sacred gifts of his father and his own sacred gifts, silver, and gold, and vessels.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What kind of life did King Asa live? He acted like David. He removed the idols. It explains that he became a man of faith who set apart and offered things to God. How did this happen? How could such a good king be born from under a bad father? Does anyone know? I don&#8217;t know either\u2014how this is possible. Was the father bad but the mother a decent person? No. As recorded in verse 13, the mother was also a bad mother who worshipped an Asherah pole; King Asa even had to remove her from being queen mother. Both the father and mother were not very good, so &#8220;how a good king could come from a bad father and mother&#8221; is a mystery. However, there is one thing that is certain. What is that one certain thing? It is the fact that the possibility of faith is never completely absent, no matter how wicked an environment one is raised in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, is there any excuse for not having faith? There is no excuse. There is no reason to blame the environment. There is no reason to blame one&#8217;s parents. There is no reason to say, &#8220;My church is not a suitable place for me to lead a religious life,&#8221; or &#8220;I cannot do what is good in this world.&#8221; No matter what kind of environment we grow up in, even if nothing is given to us and we are thrown into a poor environment where nothing can help our faith and nothing is beneficial to us\u2014even if we are cast into such a dire situation\u2014we have no excuse. I believe this is the point we must examine as we meditate on this word. They say a child was once asked, &#8220;My child, what do you want to be when you grow up?&#8221; The child replied, &#8220;Yes, I want to be the son of a building owner. But my father is not cooperating.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter what wicked conditions unfold before us, we can still have faith in that situation. No matter how difficult and trying the situation before us may be\u2014even if one grows up as an orphan because parents passed away early, even if one received no schooling or educational benefits, even if everyone around right now is a wicked person\u2014there is not a single reason to say, &#8220;It is the fault of this society and the surrounding environment that I was ruined,&#8221; or &#8220;I became like this because I received no benefits.&#8221; In the Bible, we can find so many such examples. What kind of king was Hezekiah? He was the son of King Ahaz, who was notorious for being the most wicked king. Who was Josiah?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was the grandson of Manasseh, the king who led Judah to destruction, and his father Amon practiced idolatry and was eventually assassinated by his officials. Yet, the Bible records that his son, Josiah, ascended the throne at the age of eight, repaired the temple, and became a faithful king living according to God\u2019s Word. Is it not the same for Samuel? When Samuel was young, he was entrusted to the household of Eli the priest and grew up working in the tabernacle. Who were the people around Samuel? There was Eli the priest, and Hophni and Phinehas\u2014the household of a priest that failed to live according to God\u2019s will. He grew up watching them, yet he did not follow their evil. Instead, he took them as a &#8220;negative teacher&#8221; (an example of what not to do) and, by obeying God\u2019s Word, he became a great man of faith who could lead the nation of Israel. Our relationship with God is a one-on-one relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if no one cooperates with you, no one evangelizes with you, no one prays with you, no one praises with you\u2014do not use that as an excuse to complain and fall into an abyss, saying, &#8220;No one reaches out a hand to me, no one shows me love.&#8221; Instead, no matter how harsh the environment, we must all become those who look toward God\u2019s grace and stand by faith. Exodus 20:5 records: <strong>&#8220;You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me.&#8221;<\/strong> It tells us that the influence of the wicked will last to the third or fourth generation. But is there a need to worry? No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can I break that curse flowing through three or four generations? I simply need to live by faith. I simply need to serve God. If I live faithfully in faith, no matter how wicked my parents may be, no matter if I have parents who could be a curse to me\u2014if I live as a child of God, I believe that the amazing grace of God\u2019s blessing will reach to a thousand generations. Often, within our Christian circles, people are judged by how many generations their family has been in the faith. So, if someone has been a believer for three or five generations, they are often held in high regard. But should that really be the case? Is this the first time you are hearing this? There are even some mindless churches that, when looking for a pastor, give preference to one who grew up in a household of faith for three or four generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does that make any sense? No, it doesn&#8217;t. Regardless of what kind of faith your ancestors had or whether you are in a situation where they lived in unbelief\u2014if you stand upright before God, if you live correctly in faith before Him, God\u2019s grace is sufficient. His grace is overflowing. Of course, it is good if the whole family practices faith over several generations. I am not saying that is bad. But it is perfectly fine even if you are the first to believe. Why is it fine? Because God is enough. We must remember that whether I am standing correctly before God <em>right now<\/em> is the only criteria for a blessed life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We must remember the amazing love of God, who loved us and gave His only Son for us. Even if various conditions and situations in our current circumstances are not good, how did King Asa act according to the text? In that poor situation where both father and mother were a bad king and a bad queen, King Asa did not follow his father or mother. Instead, he looked to David\u2014who can be called the model of faith\u2014and by following and obeying like David, he came to live a life of holy faith in the eyes of God. Remembering that this was his blessing, we too must have a life of faith and decisions of faith in our lives today.
