previously mentioned that the Book of Ephesians is a letter written by the Apostle Paul, who was imprisoned for his ministry for the Lord, to the church in Ephesus. The message we read today is the exhortation Paul gives while thinking of the Ephesian church. If you were in prison and the church was out there, what kind of exhortation would you want to give? What do you think you would have said? In <strong>Ephesians 4:1 (ESV)<\/strong>, the Apostle Paul exhorts as follows: <strong>\u201cI therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called.\u201d<\/strong> What kind of exhortation is this? It is a very natural one. You have been called, so live a life worthy of that calling. If you are a student, you should act like a student. How should a teacher act? Like a teacher. What about a police officer? They should act like a police officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A human being should act like a human being. Likewise, what kind of life should a Christian live? They should act like a Christian. Paul\u2019s message to the Ephesians is that we must walk worthy of the calling with which God has called us. Why does Paul give this exhortation? Why is he urging them to live a life worthy of their calling? It is because there are times when people carry the name &#8220;Christian&#8221; but do not act like Christians. They say they believe in Jesus and are children of God, yet they do not look like children of God. They are called Christians, but Christian character is missing. Whose problem is this? It is our problem. We wish we acted like people who truly believe in God, but often we behave as if we resemble Satan rather than God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhortation the Apostle Paul truly wants to give the Ephesian saints is this: &#8220;Have you not become citizens of God\u2019s heavenly kingdom through faith in Jesus Christ? Have you not become children of God? If so, live like children of God.&#8221; This raises a question. What does it actually mean to be &#8220;Christian&#8221;? What kind of appearance must one have to be considered a child of God? Is it walking around with a Bible under your arm looking holy? This is explained in <strong>Ephesians 4:2\u20133 (ESV)<\/strong>: <strong>\u201cwith all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This describes the character our saints should possess and the attitude of life a child of God should have. We must be humble. Humble. We must be humble in all things. Furthermore, we must act with gentleness in everything. We must treat people with gentleness. We must bear with and accept people with long-suffering and patience. Instead of losing our temper and being angry, we must accept and tolerate others. Moreover, we must strive for unity with one another. This is the image of a Christian. What is the most fundamental of these? Humility, gentleness, patience, love, acceptance, unity&#8230; many themes are mentioned, but if there is one foundation for them all, what would it be? I believe it is humility. It is the first thing mentioned. We must be humble in every situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why must we be humble? Why must we show humility in everything? It is because we are those who have received salvation freely by the grace of God. Did we obtain salvation through our own efforts? No. Did we acquire it because we performed well? No. What is our salvation? It is the grace God bestowed upon us who were completely unworthy. We were lives that deserved to be cursed and thrown into the fires of hell, but God took pity on us and gave us salvation as a gift. Since we have received such marvelous grace, can we boast? Can we be proud? It is impossible. I believe we must be humble. Humility is the most important thing. Therefore, we must always think about how we were saved. How were we saved? It is because the grace of God that saved a wretch like me is so great and wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I believe it is only natural to live with a humble heart, always remembering that God saved a sinner like me when I was a life destined for ruin if left alone. Are you humble? Or are you proud? Would those who are proud please raise their hands? Now, would those who are humble raise their hands? If you raise your hand saying you are humble, that is pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can we know if we are humble or proud? How can we diagnose whether we are truly humble or proud? While it refers to an internal state of the heart, we can diagnose our humility by observing our reactions. For example, if anger rises or a spirit of complaining emerges in every situation and whenever we face something, that person is proud. But what reaction comes from a humble person? Gratitude comes out. Therefore, we need to diagnose ourselves. Is my life overflowing with gratitude? Am I thankful to people and to God, living with joy and a grateful heart? Or is my heart filled with dissatisfaction, leading me to live in complaint and anger? Which side are you on? If a heart is full of anger, that person can be called proud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why does anger come out? Why do complaints emerge? It is because one thinks, &#8220;How can they do this to me? Who do they think I am? I don&#8217;t deserve this kind of treatment!&#8221; Anger surges because of this. If there is self-conceit, complaints follow. However, a person who thinks, &#8220;I am nothing; I am a person destined for destruction and I am of no account,&#8221; does not produce complaints, but rather a heart of gratitude in everything. They live a life of praising and giving glory to God with immense thankfulness. Therefore, if there is a spiritual litmus test to check whether our hearts are humble or proud, it is whether we live in complaint and anger, or if our humility is expressed through gratitude. In the Bible, King David appears; on his path of flight, he encountered a man who deeply troubled him. That was Shimei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fleeing because of his son\u2019s rebellion, David was met by Shimei, who began to curse him. He started to hurl insults. He threw stones and kicked up dust, criticizing David. Seeing this, David\u2019s subordinates were furious. &#8220;How can he do this to our King David? How dare he!&#8221; they said, wanting to kill him immediately. Why? Because they thought David was not someone who deserved such treatment. If David had a proud heart at that moment, would he have said, &#8220;Kill that man&#8221;? He would have sent his soldiers, saying, &#8220;How dare you mock royalty?&#8221; However, David did not get angry at that moment. He spoke to the people around him: &#8220;Leave him alone. How do we know if the Lord has told him to curse me?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He didn&#8217;t think of himself as a King who deserved respect; rather, he thought, &#8220;I am a sinner before God, one who has committed great sin and evil. I am a being who deserves such curses and criticism.&#8221; When he dealt with the situation with a humble heart, he did not criticize or rush to kill the man, but was able to respond with gentleness. There is a famous story about the evangelist D.L. Moody. He was a well-known revivalist who preached the Gospel all over America and the world. One day, slanderous words about him began to circulate. Someone wrote a letter criticizing him, and it spread among the people, saying, &#8220;Reverend Moody is such a bad person, a wicked man,&#8221; criticizing him baselessly throughout the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When his fellow workers heard this, they went to Reverend Moody and said, &#8220;Pastor, we have a big problem. Someone is spreading fake news and baselessly criticizing you. This is serious. If we don&#8217;t stop this, it will be a major hindrance to your ministry. We have to resolve this. What should we do?&#8221; Reverend Moody\u2019s answer is very famous. He replied, &#8220;Those people are saying that because they don&#8217;t know me. They don&#8217;t know me at all.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He continued, &#8220;If they truly knew me accurately, they would have criticized me even more. If they knew all the wicked sins and the sinfulness in my heart, they would have judged me as someone far worse, deserving even greater criticism. The fact that they only criticize me that much makes me feel only grateful.&#8221; This is a famous story. Who is a Christian? We must remember that a Christian is someone who is humble before God. What kind of reaction is appearing in our lives today? Whenever people say something about us, do we live in anger? Whenever we see how people treat us, do we live in complaint and resentment? Or are we dealing with others in humility, gentleness, and sincerity? I pray in the name of the Lord that we all look at ourselves and show humility in everything. All other virtues come out when we are humble. We must treat people with gentleness, but where does gentleness come from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It comes from humility. When people say things to us or treat us wrongly, a humble person can respond with gentleness. It is just as King David responded with gentleness. How can we be patient? We can endure when we are humble. If I am proud, I cannot endure. I will get angry immediately and try to take revenge. But a humble person can endure for a long time and accept others with love. I believe there must be a marvelous history of grace where we do not get angry at those different from us, but accept them and become one through faith. Furthermore, <strong>Ephesians 4:4\u20136 (ESV)<\/strong> speaks of the reason why we must be one: <strong>\u201cThere is one body and one Spirit\u2014just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call\u2014 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because God is one, the one who called us is one, and baptism is one, we must have a resolution of faith to harmonize and become one through the bond of peace. Today, many different people make up the church. In the Ephesian church at that time, it is thought that a vast variety of people composed the congregation. There were masters, and there were slaves working under those masters, yet they had to share the same faith in the same church. Gentiles and Jews gathered together, so the members of the church were all different and diverse in every way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, despite these differences, they had to be one. This is because the God who bound those many people into the church and caused them to believe with one faith is one. When we are one, we grow spiritually together, and when we are one, we can emerge victorious in spiritual warfare. But what does Satan do? he keeps trying to divide us. He makes us fight. Therefore, if we are truly children of God, is it right to divide? Or is it right to be one? It is right to be one. To be one&#8230; a Christian is not someone who keeps fighting, splitting, and dividing by saying &#8220;you and I are different.&#8221; Instead, we must remember that a Christian is someone who makes every effort to be one by accepting and understanding one another, even if there are differences. How can we be one? What does it mean to be one?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being one does not mean being identical. A mistake we often make is that under the name of &#8220;becoming one,&#8221; we want everyone to become exactly the same. But unity is not possible by becoming identical. Of course, it\u2019s nice to wear the same clothes when performing a special song. It\u2019s good to do something as a group. However, how is unity possible? It is not possible by being identical, but by acknowledging that we are different. So, what is unity? Unity is acknowledging and accepting that each other is different. If we pursue becoming identical and seek uniformity while claiming to be one, we are heading in the wrong direction. If we pursue uniformity, what happens? Those who do not fit that uniformity end up being excluded. They fall away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if we go to a restaurant and say &#8220;Everyone, unify!&#8221; and order Jajangmyeon, what happens? Those who don&#8217;t like Jajangmyeon can&#8217;t go. Those who like Jjamppong might eat Jajangmyeon if told to, but they won&#8217;t be happy. How can we be one? Being one is eating whatever you want to eat. Those who want Jajangmyeon eat Jajangmyeon, those who want Jjamppong eat Jjamppong, and you say, &#8220;Ah, you&#8217;re eating Jajangmyeon; I&#8217;ll eat Jjamppong.&#8221; When we acknowledge each other&#8217;s differences and accept that you and I are different, we eat together in one place. If we say, &#8220;Why are you eating Jjamppong? I have to eat Jajangmyeon!&#8221; and create a division, what happens? All the Jjamppong eaters are kicked out, and only Jajangmyeon eaters gather\u2014that is not unity. Biblical unity is acknowledging each other&#8217;s differences. How can a husband and wife be one? Unity is not the husband conforming everything to the wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unity is not the wife conforming everything to the husband; it is acknowledging the wife&#8217;s strengths and the husband&#8217;s strengths. It is becoming one when we acknowledge that we are different and accept each other. How can we be one in the church? People think differently. They act differently. Their ideologies are different. Their political views are different. But unity is when people with different views gather together to live out their faith. It is not unity if we say, &#8220;We only gather Democratic supporters&#8221; or &#8220;We only gather opposition supporters.&#8221; Unity is acknowledging differences and saying, &#8220;I think this way, but you may think differently.&#8221; We can only call it unity when we acknowledge differences and gather. Therefore, a Christian is someone who pursues unity. How can we pursue unity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is by acknowledging that while each has strengths and things they do well, they also have things they cannot do well. If I do something well, it is easy to look down on and despise those who cannot do it as well as I can. But if that happens, unity is impossible. Instead of looking at those who can&#8217;t do it and despising them, asking &#8220;Why can&#8217;t they do this?&#8221; or &#8220;Why do they act that way?&#8221;, we should realize that while I am good at this, there are parts I am not good at, and while that person isn&#8217;t good at that, they have things they do better than me. I believe a community can be one when we acknowledge that people with different strengths and weaknesses harmonize to help one another and make the community better together. What kind of heart should we have?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I do something well, I should think that God sent me to serve those who cannot do it well. Instead of criticizing those who can&#8217;t do it, I should think, &#8220;God sent me to this community to serve those who lack this.&#8221; Parents exist because children cannot do things. Children exist because elders eventually lose their strength. A wife exists because there are things a husband cannot do, and a husband exists because there are things a wife cannot do. Among our saints, there are those good at this and those good at that; there are extroverts and introverts. Many people with different characteristics form one community. This is why the Bible compares the church to a body. Christ is the head of the church and we are His members, and among those members, there are various parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some play the role of the eye, some the nose, some the ear, and some the mouth. If everyone is an eye, how do we hear? If everyone is an ear, how do we speak? Because we are different, we gather to form one body. Because we are different, we <em>can<\/em> be one. Remembering that we can only be one when we acknowledge our differences, I pray in the name of the Lord that our families, our church, and any community may restore the passion for unity worthy of the calling with which God has called us. Otherwise, if we do not acknowledge others, we will ultimately fail to be one. If we look for an example in the Bible, we could use Hagar as an illustration. Though it\u2019s not a perfect analogy, one day, when Abraham\u2019s wife Sarah was unable to conceive, she made a remarkable decision. It\u2019s something that wouldn&#8217;t happen today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in those ancient times, she had a plan to have a child through her maidservant by giving her to her husband as a secondary wife. So, she gave her maidservant to Abraham. Then, what happened to Hagar? She became pregnant. How did the pregnant maidservant Hagar treat her mistress Sarah? She began to look down on her. She began to despise her. &#8220;I am pregnant, but my mistress cannot even conceive; she is such a powerless woman who can&#8217;t even fulfill her role&#8230;&#8221; Thus, she criticized her mistress. She despised her. What was the result? She was cast out. This structure itself wouldn&#8217;t happen today, so it may not be a perfect example, but it is the same in our lives today. Some people have the ability to do something. They do this well. Some do that well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if there is someone who can do something well, the correct attitude is not to use that strength to look down on or despise others. Rather, we should think of it as grace given by God to serve and labor for others, and we should all be those who humble ourselves, serve, and manifest the power of faith. Why must we live accepting one another? It is because our Lord accepted us. If we were judged exactly as we are, we are sinners who would have no choice but to face eternal judgment and death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, our Lord did not look at us as &#8220;useless sinners&#8221; and just end it by judging us. Because He accepted us with love, if we are those children of God who have received that calling, we should not live in anger, contempt, or complaint with a proud heart. Instead, I pray in the name of the Lord that we all live in faith and gratitude, remembering the grace God has given us.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pvc_clear\"><\/div><p id=\"pvc_stats_34326\"
