class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You might have thought that the lectures on the Beatitudes concluded last week. However, one more part remains. In the Gospel of Luke, we see not eight, but four blessings. Luke does not record all eight blessings found in Matthew; instead, he records only four: blessed are the poor, blessed are the hungry, blessed are those who weep, and blessed are those who are hated and insulted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And after recording these four blessings, he also records four woes. The passage we read today is precisely about those four woes. In other words, this serves as a final supplementary series to the Beatitudes. Today\u2019s word explains those who will face woe. Who are they? Woe to the rich. Woe to those who are well-fed now. Woe to those who laugh now. And the text records that woe belongs to those who are treated with praise and applause by everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This word is quite uncomfortable because these are the very things we earnestly desire. Do we want to be rich or poor? Our honest hope is to be rich, or at least not to be financially squeezed or suffer from financial difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it is somewhat perplexing because the Lord says today, <strong>\u201cWoe to you who are rich\u201d<\/strong> (Luke 6:24). It feels confusing and bewildering as the Lord tells the rich, \u201cYou have already received your consolation on earth; since you have enjoyed all good things in this world, there is nothing left to receive in the kingdom of heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, we all have a desire to eat well. Rather than living in hunger, our basic desire is to eat to our heart&#8217;s content and feel full. Yet, the Lord says, <strong>\u201cWoe to you who are full now\u201d<\/strong> (Luke 6:25). Is eating well a sin? Why does the Lord say woe to those who are full? The word saying that those who are full now\u2014those who are not hungry now\u2014will eventually go hungry is a very difficult word for us to accept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, we do not want to be sad. When do we weep? We weep when life is painful. We laugh when we are happy and joyful, but we weep when our lives are truly difficult. Yet, Jesus says to those who laugh now\u2014meaning those who feel happy, those who have no problems, those enjoying joy\u2014that you will eventually mourn and weep. This is truly staggering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, we want to be recognized by others. We long for people to acknowledge us and applaud. But Jesus says that those who are recognized now\u2014those whom everyone praises and applauds\u2014will face woe. What on earth is the meaning of this word?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, many people insist that these words must be interpreted literally, claiming that we must live in poverty. They ask, &#8220;Who is a real Christian?&#8221; and often say that the rich are not real Christians; only those who live in hardship and abandon everything are real Christians. Those who speak this way can be called ascetics. Throughout Christian history, and indeed world history, there have been many who advocated for asceticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is asceticism? It is viewing everything we encounter in this world as filthy. It divides the world into two: matter and soul. By dichotomizing matter and soul, it views everything material\u2014the visible things we can touch physically\u2014as dirty, ugly, and something to be discarded. On the other hand, it claims we must only pursue things that are spiritual, mental, and noble. This dualistic thinking has persisted throughout our history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plato, the Greek philosopher, is a representative case. Have you heard of &#8220;Platonic love&#8221;? What does it mean? It means that mental love is noble, while physical love is bad. The hope of Greek philosophers was to shed this body as quickly as possible\u2014viewing the body as merely a prison and the material world as something rotting and evil\u2014and to enter the world of the mind and spirit. This was the perspective of Greek philosophers and ascetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The teaching of the Bible is far from asceticism. Looking at the message of the entire Bible, even though asceticism is not a biblical perspective, many Christians tend to read and interpret the Bible through an ascetic lens. Thus, whenever they see these words, they tend to say, &#8220;Christians must only live in poverty, discard material things, and pursue only mental things.&#8221; They argue that becoming rich is bad and one must only be poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I have mentioned several times, asceticism is by no means a biblical perspective. Jesus Christ died on the cross and shed His blood for us to save us. From what did He save us? He saved us from the requirements of the law and from religious shackles. People in the past thought, &#8220;If I abuse myself religiously, suffer, and live in hardship, those ascetic practices will lead me to God.&#8221; They thought religious yokes would bring them to God. We must clearly recognize that the cross of Jesus Christ came as great good news of joy that liberates us from such religious shackles and from the requirements of the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, even now while reading the Bible, there are many cases where people hold an ascetic perspective and try to approach God through their own deeds, suffering, and pain. Such perspectives indicate that one has not yet tasted the joy of the Gospel. The biblical perspective is that because God created this world and declared it beautiful and good, if we receive everything in this world with thanksgiving, nothing is to be rejected. If we use the gifts God has given us according to His will, they can be used in a direction that is truly beneficial to us\u2014provided we do not place material things in the position of an idol or fall into the pit of greed. Unfortunately, the problem is that many people enter a place where material things become an idol. We must first remember that as long as we do not enter that stage, everything has the potential to be used for good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, why does the Lord say in today\u2019s text, &#8220;Woe to you who are rich, woe to you who are full now, woe to you who laugh now&#8221;? The reason Jesus speaks this way is to teach us that it is wrong to place our hope only in life in this world and think, &#8220;I am rich, I am happy, I have no worries, and people applaud me, so this is enough.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When people become rich, they tend to think, &#8220;Now that I have wealth, I am okay.&#8221; This is incredibly dangerous. An example can be found in the &#8216;Parable of the Rich Fool&#8217; told by Jesus. A certain rich man had a massive harvest. In today\u2019s terms, he hit the jackpot. He made a huge profit from his business. What did he do then? He built larger barns to store his grain, filled them with everything, and was truly happy. And he said in Luke 12:19: \u201cAnd I will say to my soul, \u2018Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at his barns full of material things, he thought, &#8220;Now there is nothing to worry about; I can live happily.&#8221; That was the rich man\u2019s perspective. But what did the Lord say? In Luke 12:20, God says this: <strong>\u201cFool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?\u201d<\/strong> What exactly did this rich man do wrong? In fact, it seems he did almost nothing wrong. If we come into a lot of money or material goods, we would also think about saving, looking for ways to grow it, and feel relieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, his fault lay in the fact that he was only interested in this world and had no interest in eternity. Because living in this world was so good, he gave no thought to what comes after death. His problem was that if God called his soul that very night, he had no preparation for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"p-rc_17d255af1a420c93-26\">The people in the days of Noah were the same. Jesus said in Matthew 24:38\u201339: <strong>\u201cFor as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.\u201d<\/strong> What did<sup><\/sup> the people of Noah\u2019s time do wrong? Is it wrong to eat, drink, and get married? No. Noah\u2019s family also ate, drank, and lived in marriage. The problem was that while the people of Noah\u2019s time lived their daily lives, that was <em>all<\/em> they did. Even though the flood was imminent, they had no interest in eternity or life after death; all their interest was poured into enjoying the daily routine of eating and living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The difference with Noah\u2019s family was that while they lived their daily lives, they prepared one more thing: they built an ark in preparation for the flood. The meaning of this word is that if one makes no preparation for the end after death\u2014or loses perspective on it\u2014and thinks this world is everything, believing that success and applause in this world are the entirety of life, then that person will face woe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus says that the problem of those who are rich now, those who laugh, those who are full, and those who receive praise is that they are satisfied with life in this world and pay no spiritual attention. When the things of this world are satisfying, we lose interest in the truly important relationship with God. Their problem lies in being intoxicated by the things of this world and failing to look to God, the true Savior, even as a crisis approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, it becomes a problem when the Kingdom of God arrives, and when God seeks one\u2019s life like the rich fool. The parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus shows this fact very vividly. The rich man died and went to hell, and the beggar Lazarus died and went to heaven. Does this mean every rich person goes to hell and every beggar goes to heaven? No. What Jesus wanted to say through this parable is: <strong>\u201cEven if you lived well in this world, if the final destination is hell, can that person truly be called blessed?\u201d<\/strong> Conversely, the point is that no matter how hard one\u2019s life was in this world, if the final destination is heaven, that life cannot be called pitiful. He used these two extreme individuals as examples to emphasize this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dear saints, I hope you meditate deeply on today\u2019s text from Luke 6 this week. We must meditate on the word that woe belongs to the rich, the laughing, the full, and those whom people recognize and applaud. If so, the things of this world must not be our priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you feel you haven&#8217;t succeeded in this world, even if business isn&#8217;t going well and life isn&#8217;t unfolding smoothly so that you have nothing others would envy, do not despair or suffer because of it. I pray that you will meditate deeply this week on the fact that the most important thing in our lives is not how much we possess in this world, but entering into that relationship of love between God and ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, even while leading a life of faith, we often do not know how many times we rejoice or despair because of material things or success rather than because of God. We live in agony when a small difficulty arises and in excitement when something good happens, often living as if this world is our idol. It is a very dangerous trap that we are all prone to fall into. Therefore, we must move even further toward the cross of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord bore the cross because of our weakness. We must go back before the cross every day and turn away from the place where our hearts laugh and feel full because of the things of this world and long for the applause of people. All those things do not actually make us happy; they only betray us. I pray that you will not let your hearts be stolen by such things but possess an earnest desire to enter into a vivid communion of love with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not despair over small difficulties or become conceited over small happinesses in your life. Instead, as we move toward the true cross, we must all move into the true joy and fullness given by the Lord, into the blessing that the Lord acknowledges. You may think of changing the lyrics of the hymn &#8220;Look upon the Lord&#8217;s face when you are in pain&#8221; to: &#8220;Look upon the Lord&#8217;s face when you are happy, when you are rich, and when you are successful.&#8221; I pray in the name of the Lord that we all may become people who do not fluctuate between joy and sorrow because of the things of this world, but give our whole
