Immorality<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>We can say that we are living in an era overflowing with sexual immorality and sexual crimes. Stories of once-successful politicians falling from grace due to sexual scandals frequently appear in our news today. Furthermore, the &#8220;MeToo&#8221; movement\u2014a campaign of accusing individuals of sexual harassment\u2014has taken place across various sectors of our society, leading to many instances around us where perpetrators are brought to trial and found guilty. All these actions can be described as behaviors arising from violating God&#8217;s word, which commands us not to commit adultery. We intend to examine God&#8217;s will as we meditate together on this word, the seventh commandment: <strong>\u201cYou shall not commit adultery.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing to remember is the fact that sex is not something we should distance ourselves from because it is &#8220;dirty&#8221; or &#8220;vile.&#8221; What is sex? I hope we can first remember well that sex is not something dirty or vile that we should avoid if possible, but rather a wonderful blessing that God has given to us human beings. It was God who created us as male and female; furthermore, it was also God who gave humans the mission to be fruitful and multiply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is said that when God created the heavens and the earth, He gave three ordinances, or three laws. These are the ordinance of labor, the ordinance of rest, and another is the ordinance of marriage. We often mistakenly think that spiritual tasks like worshipping and praising are holy, while laboring or engaging in married life are secular and valueless tasks. Viewing it this way is not a healthy biblical perspective, but rather can be called a mistaken perspective of <strong>sacred-secular dualism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually, many people are caught in a dualistic way of thinking regarding the spirit and the flesh, believing that physical matters are dirty and must be suppressed. Many among the Greek philosophers held such a view. Plato viewed this world through dualism, asserting that physical love is valueless and only mental or &#8220;platonic&#8221; love is real. However, this is Greek philosophy and not a biblical perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among religious individuals, there is a tendency to regard celibacy as noble. Seeing Catholic priests, nuns, or celibate monks of the Jogye Order of Buddhism living while suppressing sexual desires, people sometimes look up to them as remarkable. However, when the reality is uncovered, vile aspects are often revealed. There is even a story that the history of orphanages in the Middle Ages originated from raising children born between priests and nuns. The fact that news of child sexual abuse by clergy continues today is a side effect that appears because they try to go against the order of creation established by God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The teaching of the entire Bible does not say that one must live in celibacy for a lifetime. In <strong>Genesis 2:18<\/strong>, it says: <strong>\u201cThen the LORD God said, \u2018It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.\u2019\u201d<\/strong> In the process of creating the heavens and the earth, the only thing God saw as &#8220;not good&#8221; was man being alone. Therefore, sex is a gift from God and is holy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commanding us not to commit adultery in the seventh commandment is not about forbidding sexual relations themselves, but rather about stating that the category in which that blessing should be enjoyed is within a &#8216;rightful marital relationship.&#8217; Stepping outside this category becomes a sin. Just as appetite itself is not a sin but coveting what belongs to another becomes a sin, sexual desire becomes a curse if it crosses outside the boundary set by God. <strong>Proverbs 5:15\u201318<\/strong> teaches: <strong>\u201cDrink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well. &#8230; Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason God forbids adultery is that He loves us. It is because He does not want sexual pleasure to become our idol and lead us to destruction. Just as money or children can impoverish us if they become idols, when pleasure becomes an idol and crosses the established boundaries, it brings the miserable result of causing pain to those we love most and destroying our lives. Because God knows those destructive consequences, He strictly forbids adultery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sin of adultery corresponds to a grave sin before God. While all sins are equal in that they are subject to God&#8217;s judgment, there are sins that must be dealt with more heavily in terms of their influence and responsibility. In particular, if a spiritual leader within the church has committed the sin of adultery, they must step down from their ministry. We must not moderately defend such a serious sin just because we are all sinners. If they have truly repented, they should be forgiven and accepted as a fellow believer, but appointing them as a spiritual leader is a separate issue that must be handled differently for the sake of the holiness of the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today&#8217;s society tends not to punish adultery, and the legal standards regarding sexual immorality will likely become even more relaxed in the future. However, regardless of how this society turns, believers must remain within the holy boundary given by God. Furthermore, in <strong>Matthew 5:28<\/strong>, Jesus said, <strong>\u201cBut I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.\u201d<\/strong> Here, &#8220;looking&#8221; does not refer to a mere feeling, but signifies a continuous action of gazing with intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martin Luther said, &#8220;You cannot prevent the birds of sorrow from flying over your head, but you can prevent them from building nests in your hair.&#8221; Even if fleeting thoughts that pass through the mind are beyond our control, it becomes a sin to continue developing them, imagining them, and having intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is only one way we can live a holy life. It is for a husband and wife to love each other and restore an intimate relationship. Many families live lonely lives, having closed the doors of their hearts due to past wounds, as if standing in the middle of a wilderness. However, we must take the courage to be hurt and sprinkle the water of love once again. If I close my door, my surroundings become a desolate wilderness, but if I open my heart and provide water, fruit will bear there and the relationship will be restored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God has bestowed such grace upon us. We were like harlots who betrayed God and wandered in search of the idols of the world, yet God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to us instead of writing a certificate of divorce. He washed us, who were battered and bruised, with His precious blood and restored us. The word &#8220;You shall not commit adultery&#8221; is not simply about enduring; it is completed by enjoying the happiness of the beautiful marital relationship given by God within the Lord.
