Action to Affection: Understanding the Sin of Covetousness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As we have been lecturing for several weeks under the title &#8220;The Ten Commandments Through the Eyes of the Gospel,&#8221; today marks our final session. We are going to examine the tenth commandment today, the command regarding greed: <strong>&#8220;You shall not covet.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I mentioned at the very beginning of our study of the Ten Commandments, when the Catholic Church categorizes the Ten Commandments, they use a different division method from the one used by most Protestant denominations. Do you remember? Yes, the Catholic Church views the first and second commandments as one, seeing them as the first commandment. Consequently, everything is pulled forward by one, so our third commandment becomes their second, and our fourth becomes their third. This leaves only nine commandments, right? Therefore, they divide this last tenth commandment into two, classifying them as the ninth and tenth commandments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, the Catholic Church understands the ninth commandment as &#8220;You shall not covet your neighbor&#8217;s wife&#8221; and the tenth commandment as &#8220;You shall not covet your neighbor&#8217;s goods,&#8221; dividing the commandment regarding covetousness into the ninth and tenth. I don&#8217;t think this method of classification is that critically important. Whether classified this way or that way, as long as all the content that belongs in the Ten Commandments is included, it shouldn&#8217;t be a major issue. This division method used by the Catholic Church is not only used by them but is actually a classification used by some Protestant denominations as well, such as the Lutheran Church. The important thing is not how we classify them, but whether we truly accept and obey God&#8217;s Word as His Word\u2014whether we follow the actual content\u2014rather than how we categorize it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often in our Protestant circles, we criticize the Catholic division of the Ten Commandments, accusing them of having removed the second commandment. However, they haven&#8217;t actually removed it; they have included it within the first commandment. Of course, because they use an abbreviated form rather than the full text, the verses regarding idolatry are somewhat weakened, which is regrettable, but I don&#8217;t believe it is something to be denounced to that extent. Personally, however, I believe the classification traditionally used by our Protestant churches is far more logical and correct than the one used by Catholics or Lutherans. I see our method as more right because in <strong>Exodus 20:17 (ESV)<\/strong>, it is recorded: <strong>\u201cYou shall not covet your neighbor&#8217;s house; you shall not covet your neighbor&#8217;s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor&#8217;s.\u201d<\/strong> Among this list of things not to covet, pulling out the second item\u2014the wife\u2014to make a ninth commandment and grouping the rest as a tenth commandment feels somewhat forced. Therefore, the classification we traditionally know is much more desirable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At any rate, we are examining the tenth commandment today, which is a regulation regarding covetousness and greed. In the eighth commandment, He said not to steal. While stealing refers to actually acquiring another&#8217;s possession through unfair means, the tenth commandment stipulates that even if it does not manifest in such actual behavior, the very arising of desire or greed for another&#8217;s things within our hearts is wrong. Throughout the teaching of the entire Bible, coveting or being greedy is clearly defined as wrong, regardless of its form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Colossians 3:5 (ESV)<\/strong> records: <strong>\u201cPut to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.\u201d<\/strong> The Bible views idolatry as a very great sin, but what kind of sin is this sin of greed? It is defined as the same as the sin of idolatry\u2014a very grave and wicked sin. Therefore, the Bible teaches that we should not live being greedy, but rather live with a heart of contentment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What should we do? What does it mean to live without greed, and what does being greedy mean? How can we tell when we are being greedy and when it is okay? What is excessive greed and what is acceptable desire? It can be said that defining that boundary is actually very difficult. The first thing we need to examine is the fact that desire itself is not a sin. It is necessary to first remember that the arising of a desire, or wanting something\u2014though it may differ depending on how you define it\u2014the arising of a longing or a drive is not inherently evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, most religions, especially those like Buddhism that deal with the importance of the mind, view desire itself as evil. They emphasize that the spiritual discipline humans should have is to suppress and reduce such desires to approach holiness\u2014that removing one&#8217;s desires is the truly important thing. Thus, in Buddhism, they speak of &#8220;removing the desire for material possession.&#8221; They talk about the importance of practicing &#8220;non-possession.&#8221; Furthermore, they teach that one should suppress sexual desire and live in celibacy, and suppress appetite to eat sparingly or practice fasting as something very desirable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, from my perspective, what is regrettable is that those religions do not condemn the desire to rest. While considering &#8220;rest&#8221; as very important, they emphasize and say that the desire to rest is perfectly fine. While desires humans have are expressed in various ways, they say certain desires are wrong, while other desires\u2014the desire to seek stability or the desire to take rest\u2014are considered okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if there is something we must clearly remember, the arising of a desire to possess something or a desire to enjoy something in our hearts is not actually something that can be viewed as evil. What are the three major human desires? They are said to be the desire for food, sex, and sleep. But there aren&#8217;t just those desires; if you look closely, there are an enormous variety of desires. Besides food, sex, and sleep, there are physiological desires such as the desire to breathe or the desire to empty oneself. Furthermore, there is a desire for safety\u2014the desire for employment, health, protection, and to enjoy safety. There is also the desire for belonging\u2014the desire to enter a group and the desire for affection to give and receive love. There is also the desire for esteem, to receive respect from others, and the desire for recognition. Further, there is the desire for self-actualization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A psychologist named Maslow, while analyzing human needs, stated that once basic human needs are satisfied, they develop into higher levels of needs. It develops step by step through physiological needs, safety needs, needs for belonging and love, the desire for esteem, and further to the need for self-actualization. When we ask whether those desires themselves are sinful, we cannot actually say that such things are inherently evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If there is something the Bible forbids, it is not desire itself, but coveting what belongs to another. We should first remember that it isn&#8217;t the desires humans have that are a sin, but that desire becomes sin and evil when it is an unfair desire to seize another&#8217;s property through dishonest means\u2014a desire to possess what does not belong to me. It is perhaps natural that a desire to have something arises when we see something good. When watching television advertisements, the arising of a desire to possess is perhaps a natural urge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Bible teaches that if there is an attempt to obtain what I must not have\u2014unjust things that should not belong to me\u2014that is a wrong desire, and even if it hasn&#8217;t been put into actual action, it is the same as the sin of idolatry. Also, even if it is something I can have, if I think of having it through unfair means, that too can be called the sin of covetousness. David had a desire to take another&#8217;s wife, King Ahab had a wrong desire to take Naboth&#8217;s vineyard, and the Israelites during their wilderness life had unfair greed to gather several days&#8217; worth of manna when they were told to gather only one day&#8217;s worth; we must remember that all these were forbidden by God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The question we must ask here is: &#8220;Why do we become greedy?&#8221; Why does covetousness arise? Why is there a heart that cannot be satisfied with what we have? It is simple. It is because we are not filled with God. As the philosopher Pascal said, there is a large, empty space within us humans that cannot be filled except by God. But if that empty space in our hearts is not filled with God, we keep trying to fill it with other things, which is never satisfying, and ultimately, the constant attempt to fill it with those other things manifests as covetousness. The reason the Bible says covetousness is idolatry is that it can be called idolatry in the sense that one is not satisfied with God and is longing for the materials of this world as if they were God. Trying to fill the place where God should be with the things of this world becomes a repetition of the sin of choosing the wrong thing instead of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how does the Bible exhort us? The Bible exhorts us to be content. Let&#8217;s try following along: &#8220;Be content.&#8221; We need to be content with what is given to us. <strong>1 Timothy 6:6\u20138 (ESV)<\/strong> records: <strong>\u201cBut godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A man named Job was very rich. He was an enormous man of wealth in the East, but he did not have covetousness. Thus, when God suddenly took everything away one day, he did not resent God but rather praised Him. This was because he knew very well that not only had he brought nothing, but he could take nothing with him, and because he knew that as long as he had God, he needed nothing else, he was able to escape the sin of covetousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is the reason that so many of our believers are full of covetousness even while claiming to believe in God? It is because while we say with our words that we serve God, we are actually serving something other than God as an idol. When we serve money as an idol or long for fame or power more than God\u2014and when God becomes merely a means to fill those things\u2014we fall into the sin of covetousness even while claiming to believe in God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If there is a solution, what would it be? I believe the solution is to be filled with God. This is also an expression with a bit of a logical gap. Saying one is &#8220;filled with God&#8221; has some logical problems, but it means that instead of filling our empty hearts with material things, we must enter into the embrace of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was an old movie called <em>Hi! Dharma!<\/em> It is a movie depicting events that occur while gangsters are hiding out in a temple. The head monk brings a jar with a hole in the bottom and gives the gangsters the problem: &#8220;Fill this jar with a hole in the bottom with water.&#8221; How can you fill a jar with a hole in the bottom with water? At first, they try pouring water in quickly before it leaks out, but it doesn&#8217;t fill. But then, one of the gangsters picks up that broken jar and dives straight into a pond. By entering the pond, the jar became full of water. Although it is a Buddhist movie, that story can serve as a very useful metaphor for us. The reason we feel greedy and our hearts feel empty is that we keep trying to fill our empty hearts with other things, but if we enter into the embrace of the Lord, this problem can be solved. Thus, I believe the Apostle Paul confessed that because the knowledge of knowing Christ is supreme, he could count all other things as rubbish and discard them. I bless you in the name of the Lord that you and I may not live being greedy for the things of this world, but live a life satisfied with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is the reason He says being greedy in this way is a sin? Why does God point out even the matter of the heart, saying not to covet what belongs to another? The reason is that being greedy does not make us happy but ultimately leaves us impoverished. Because being greedy ultimately leads to destruction, God tells us not to be greedy. It is the same as God&#8217;s intention in telling us not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Just as eating from that tree does not lead to living well but to inevitable ruin, I believe He is exhorting us to live satisfied with God rather than being greedy, because living with covetousness does not lead to a satisfied life but to a completely impoverished existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regrettably, we stumble always. In that sense, I also stumble, and no matter how long I have lived a life of faith, I always stumble. Therefore, today you and I need Jesus. I bless you in the name of the Lord that we all may go before Jesus to pray and, while praying for Him to wash our hearts with His precious blood, go forward praying for God to give us strength so
