물건을 사는 사람이 있고 물건을 팔려고 하는 사람이 있을 때 서로 다른 목적을 가지고 흥정을 하게 되는데요. 팔려고 하는 사람은 그 물건을 잘 소개하면서 이 물건이 얼마나 좋은 것인가 얼마나 가치 있는 것인가를 구매자에게 설명하려고 들 것이고, 사려고 하는 사람은 그 물건의 단점들을 지적하면서 별로 가치가 없는 것처럼 그렇게 하면서 가격을 깎으려고 하는 게 어쩌면 구매자와 판매자의 입장의 차이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 우리 실생활에 그런 일들이 많이 있죠. 물건 안 삽니까? 예전에 저희가 미국에서 차를 하나 사야 했던 적이 있었습니다. 아, 흥정이 어느 정도 잘 이루어져서 차를 구매하게 되었는데요. 이제 돈을 내고 그 차를 사기만 하면 되는 그 순간에 제 아내가 매의 눈으로 그 차를 열심히 살펴보다가 이야기를 하는 겁니다. “여기 기스가 있어요.” 흠집이 있다고 얘기를 하는 겁니다.
별로 눈에 띄는 것도 아니고 있든 없든 차가 굴러가는 데는 아무 문제도 없는 것인데, 아무튼 그 흠집을 발견해 가지고 이 흠집 때문에 마음에 안 든다고 이야기를 해서 결국 500불을 깎았습니다. 500불이면 얼마죠? 요즘 돈으로 한 80만 원 되나요? 없는 돈에 없는 살림에 그래도 어마어마한 금액을 깎을 수 있어서 기분 좋게 그 차를 구매하고 타고 다녔던 기억이 아직도 생생합니다. 어쩌면 오늘 우리가 읽은 잠언 20장 14절의 말씀은 모든 구매자들의 마음이라고 말할 수 있을 것 같습니다. 흥정할 때는 별로 관심이 없는 듯, 흥정할 때는 별로 물건이 마음에 들지 않는 듯 그렇게 외면하는 것처럼 그렇게 행동을 하지만, 나중에 그 물건을 구입하게 된 다음에는 친구들한테 가서 대단한 자랑을 하기 시작하는 것이죠.
정말 좋은 걸 샀다고, 정말 싼 가격에 아 정말 좋은 것을 얻게 되었다고 자랑하고 하는 것이 그게 어쩌면 우리들의 모습이고 우리 구매자들의, 모든 사람들이 가지고 있는 그런 감정이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 오늘 잠언 20장 14절의 말씀에서 이 이야기를 기록하고 있는데요. 잠언 20장 14절에서 이 말씀을 기록하고 있는 그 이유는 무엇이겠습니까? “물건을 사는 자가 좋지 못하다 좋지 못하다 하다가 돌아간 후에는 자랑하느니라” 이 말씀을 기록하고 있는 그 이유가 무엇이겠습니까? 그러니까 우리가 어떻게 하라는 말일까요? 그러니까 우리가 여기서 어떤 삶의 지혜를 배울 수 있을 것이라고 하는 그런 의미에서 말씀을 해 주는 것이라고 할 수 있을까요? 오늘 이 말씀을 보면서 우리가 생각할 것이 있다고 한다면, 사람들이 항상 말하는 것이 정직하게 진실을 말하는 것은 아니라고 하는 것을 우리가 생각해 볼 수가 있겠습니다. 구매자의 마음속에는 어떤 마음이 있어요?
‘야, 이거 너무 좋아서 이것을 내 것으로 만들어야 되겠다’고 하는 마음이 구매자의 마음 가운데 있는 겁니다. 그런데 그 마음이 밖으로 드러나면 어떻게 사게 되죠? 비싸게 사게 되는 겁니다. 비싸게 사게 되니까, 그러니까 내가 좋다고 하는 이야기를 감추는 거예요. 판매자에게 내가 이런 것을 좋아한다고 하는 그 마음을 숨기고 물건이 별로 안 좋다고 말하기도 하고, 때로는 좋지 않다 나쁘다 나쁘다 말을 하면서 그래서 그 판매자로부터 가능하면 싸게 사려고 하는 그 태도가 구매자의 마음 가운데 있다고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 그래서 사람들은 어떠한가? 사람들이 말하는 게 사실은 그 말하는 것과 똑같은 마음의 생각을 가지고 있는 것이 아니다라고 하는 게 오늘 본문의 말씀일 거라고 하겠습니다. 사람들은 어떠한 목적이 있기 때문에 진실을 이야기하는 것이 아니라 진실과는 다른 이야기를 할 수 있다고 하는 것을 보여주는 말씀이라고 하겠습니다.
물론 100% 완벽한 거짓말을 말하는 것이 아니라 약간의 진실에 과장과 왜곡을 섞어서, 그래서 약간 좀 뒤틀어서 이야기하고 있기 때문에 우리가 사람들의 말을 들을 때 그 말이 100% 진실로 그 사람의 마음이라고 그렇게 단정 짓는 것이 아니라, 그렇게 말하는 어떤 이유가 있지 않을까 그렇게 말하고자 하는 그 나름대로의 어떤 꿍꿍이가 있지 않을까 어떤 목적이 있지 않을까 우리가 쉽게 예상해 볼 수가 있다고 하는 것을 우리가 잠언의 말씀 가운데서 깨달을 수 있습니다. 그렇다고 한다면 지혜 있는 사람은 어떤 사람이 지혜로운 사람일까요? 어떤 사람이 현명한 사람이라고 할 수가 있겠습니까? 현명한 사람은 누구인가? 사람의 말을 액면 그대로 받아들이는 사람이 현명한 것이 아니라, 저 사람이 말하고 있는 것에 진실이 어느 정도 들어 있고 왜곡과 과장이 어느 정도 들어 있는지 말을 걸러서 분별해서 그래서 그 말을 잘 판단할 줄 아는 사람이 지혜로운 사람이라고 말할 수가 있겠습니다.
말 속에는 진리도 있지만 진실도 있지만 과장이 들어 있을 수 있고 왜곡이 들어 있을 수 있고 때로는 심각한 거짓도 섞여 들어갈 수 있기 때문에, 우리는 다른 사람들의 말을 함부로 믿어서는 될까요, 안 될까요? 안 되는 겁니다. 안 되는 겁니다. 그래서 우리가 사람들의 말을 들을 때에 그냥 곧이곧대로 액면 그대로 받아들이는 것이 아니라 과연 그 사람이 말하고 있는 의도가 무엇일까, 목적이 무엇일까, 어떠한 목적을 가지고 이런 이야기를 하고 있는 것인지 약간의 분석이 필요하다고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 따라서 사람들의 말을 들을 때 그 말을 맹목적으로 신뢰하며 따라갔다가는 큰코다치는 것이고 믿는 도끼에 발등이 찍히는 것이고, 사람들의 말을 맹목적으로 무비판적으로 그냥 따라갔다가는 엄청난 손해를 당할 수 있다고 하는 것을 알려주는 말씀이 바로 오늘 본문의 말씀이라고 하겠습니다.
예전에 일본 대마도로 여행을 가게 된 적이 있었습니다. 목사님들과 장로님들이 함께 가게 되는 노회에서 어 이렇게 가게 되는 그런 여행이 있었는데요. 대마도 여행을 하는데 그 대마도에서 이것저것 잘 구경하고 하는데 가이드가 열심히 그 대마도를 설명해 주는 겁니다. 대마도의 역사에 대해서, 우리나라와의 관계에 대해서 정말 많은 것들을 배울 수 있었는데 그런데 가이드가 종종 하는 말이 무슨 말을 하겠습니까? 물건을 팔아먹기 위한 말을 하는 겁니다. 밑밥을 미리미리 까는 거죠. 그래서 우리 관광객들이 기념품을 사러 가게 될 때에 그 기념품 가게에서 많은 물건들을 사게 만들기 위해서 미리미리 다 이야기를, 복선을 깔아놓고 이야기를 깔아놓고 하면서 그러면서 몰아가는 겁니다. 그러면서 그 가이드가 무슨 이야기를 했냐면 이런 얘기를 해요.
일본에 와서 사가면 좋은 것이 한 세 가지가 있는데 다른 것은 안 사가더라도 이것은 꼭 사가시면 남는 거라고 하면서 “우리 목사님들이고 장로님들이니까 제가 정말 정말 좋은 의미에서 말씀드린다”고 하면서 세 가지를 얘기했는데, 그것이 다 기억이 안 나는데 제가 산 것을 말씀드리면 게르마늄을 사 가라는 거예요, 사 가라는 거예요. 게르마늄. 그러면서 “이 게르마늄 팔찌를 끼고 있으면 혈액순환이 잘 되고, 혈액순환이 잘 되면은 만병의 그 모든 근원이 혈액순환이 안 되는 데서 문제가 있는데 그래서 정말 허리가 아픈 사람들, 수족냉증이 있는 사람들, 두통이 있는 사람들, 잠 못 자는 사람들, 온갖 우리가 가지고 있는 모든 질병들을 다 이야기하면서 관절염 등등 모든 거 다 이야기하면서 이 모든 것들이 혈액순환에 문제가 있다”고 하면서, “이 게르마늄 팔찌를 차거나 팔에 차거나 목에 차거나 하면은 순환이 잘 돼 피가 순환이 잘 돼서 그래서 모든 증상들이 다 낫는다”고 하는 그런 이야기를 하는 겁니다.
하는데, 그 말을 듣고 있던 어떤 장로님 한 분이 맞장구를 치면서 그러는 거예요. “저도 그거 한번 써봤는데 정말 효과 좋습니다.” 그날 다 샀습니다.
그런데 아무런 도움이 안 되더라고요. 비싸게 돈 주고 샀는데 한두 번 몇 번 차 보고 그냥 처분해 버리고 말았어. 알고 보니까 그 가이드랑 장로님이랑 짰더라고. 우리가 이야기하는 사람이 무슨 의도를 가지고 이야기하고 있는가, 그 사람이 무슨 목적을 가지고 이야기하고 있는가, 자신이 가지고 있는 어떤 목적을 이루기 위해서 좋은 이야기들을 하는 거죠. 사람들의 마음을 얻기 위해서, 그 사람에게서 돈을 빼내기 위해서 이득을 얻기 위해서 자신의 그 진심을 숨기고 다른 이야기를 하는 경우가 많이 있는 겁니다.
그래서 우리는 이 세상을 살아갈 때 지혜로운 사람은 누군가? 지혜로운 사람은 사람들의 말을 100% 무비판적으로 다 액면 그대로 받아들이는 것이 아니라, 과연 그 말 가운데 진실이 어느 정도 들어 있고 과장과 왜곡이 어디까지 들어 있는가 잘 분별하면서 그래서 잘못된 것들은 걸러내고 진실을 잘 받아들일 수 있어야 그래야 이 세상에서 여러 가지로 손해를 보지 아니하고 또한 여러 가지 사람들로부터 착취를 당하지 아니하고 건전하게 삶을 살 수 있다고 하는 사실을 기억하면서 오늘 이 말씀을 묵상해 보아야 할 줄로 믿습니다. 특별히 우리 에녹회 회원들 어디 간다고 하면 반드시 올라오는 아저씨 아줌마가 있는데, 올라와서 이것도 팔고 저것도 팔고 하는데 다 뻥이에요.
그런데 다 사셔요. 말하면 그게 다 100% 맞는 이야기가 아니라 물건을 팔아먹기 위해서 과장을 해서 이야기하는 것이고, 조그마한 효과를 강조해서 과장해서 이야기하는 것이고, 사실을 왜곡해서 말하는 것이고 그런 것들이 많이 있기 때문에 사람들의 말을 액면 그대로 받아들이는 것이 아니라 우리가 그 사람의 말 가운데 진실이 무엇인가를 분별할 필요가 있다고 하는 교훈을 오늘 본문의 말씀 가운데서 들어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 특별히 우리가 조심해야 될 것이 있는데 그것은 바로 정치적인 가짜뉴스가 많이 넘쳐나는 시대에 살고 있기 때문에 그렇습니다. 이제 6월 지방선거가 있게 되겠는데요. 선거를 앞에 두고 또 온갖 흑색선전들이 많이 날뛰기 시작할 겁니다. 우리 크리스천들의 마음을 얻기 위해서 “저 사람은 반기독교적이다, 저 사람은 교회를 파괴하는 후보다, 저 사람은 교회를 폐쇄하려고 하는 후보다, 저 사람은 동성애를 지지하는 후보다” 하면서 온갖 각종 잘못된 정보들을 왜곡하고 과장하고 해서 수많은 사람들에게 날리고 있는데, 정치가 무엇인가? 수단과 방법을 가리지 않고 자신의 목적을 이루기 위해서 모든 사실을 왜곡하면서 올인하는 것이 되어버린 것이 정치이기 때문에 우리 주변에 그런 가짜뉴스가 너무 많이 퍼져 나갈 때 그런 가짜뉴스들을 그냥 맹목적으로 받아들일 것이 아니라 그것이 진실인지 어디에 과장이 있는지 어디에 왜곡이 있는지 거짓이 있는지 잘 분별하지 아니하면 결국에는 그 손해를 누가 봅니까? 나 자신이 본다고 하는 사실을 기억하고 이것이 정말 사실인가 사실이 아닌가를 검사해야 되는 것이죠. 우리가 병원에 가더라도 마찬가지예요.
새로 개업한 병원에 가서 진단을 받으면 이것도 검사하고 저것도 검사하고 수술도 해야 된다고 하고 치료도 해야 된다고 하고 온갖 이야기를 다 하는데, 과연 내가 아파서 그렇게 치료를 받아야 되는 것인지 아니면 지금 개업을 해가지고 많은 돈을 벌어야 되기 때문에 우리 몸을 이용해서 수술하라고 강권하고 있는 것인지 한 병원에서만 이야기를 들을 것이 아니라 다른 병원에 가서 두 번째 의견, 세 번째 의견, 다른 의사들은 뭐라고 이야기하고 있는가 여러 사람들의 의견을 비교 분석해 보아서 정말 이것이 나에게 맞는 치료법인지 잘 분별하지 아니하면 한 사람의 이야기만 듣게 된다고 하면 결국 모든 돈을 다 빼앗길 뿐만 아니라 받을 필요도 없는 수술을 받게 되고 오히려 더 고통을 당하게 되는 경우가 우리 가운데 얼마나 많이 있는지 몰라요. 자동차를 고치러 가면 아무 문제가 없는데 이거 고쳐라, 저거 고쳐라, 워터 펌프 고쳐라 미션을 고쳐라 이것을 갈아줘야 된다…
온갖 이야기를 하는데 정말 그러한지 다른 자동차 수리 업체에 가서 또 이야기를 들어보고 또 이야기를 들어보고 많은 사람들의 이야기를 비교 분석해서 들어보지 아니하면 다 잘못된 그런 결과를 가져올 수 있다고 하는 사실을 기억해야 할 것입니다. 오늘날에는 너무나도 좋은 시대가 되어서 가짜인지 진짜인지 팩트체크를 할 수 있는, 사실을 확인할 수 있는 AI가 있습니다. 요즘 저는 제미나이를 잘 쓰고 있는데 누가 유튜브 링크를 주거나 글을 주면 AI에 내가 물어요. 유튜브 링크를 입력하면서 또한 글을 거기다 집어넣으면서 “이 글에 대한, 이 유튜브 영상에 대한 사실 확인을 해 주시오.”
그러면 “이것은 사실이고 이것은 근거가 있지만 이것은 거기에 근거하지 아니한 과장된 것이고 왜곡된 것이고 이것은 잘못된 것”이라고 알려주는데, 모든 것이 AI가 다 100% 맞는 것은 아니겠지만 적어도 AI도 못 믿겠으면 제미나이에게라도 물어보고 챗GPT에게도 물어보고 다양하게 물어보아서 그래서 하나의 의견에만 무조건 따라가는 것이 아니라 정말 진리를 알기 위해서 부단하게 노력하지 아니하면 결국 우리가 손해를 볼 수밖에 없다고 하는 그런 지혜를 배워야 할 줄로 믿습니다. 그런데 더더욱더 중요한 것은 이 생활에서뿐만이 아니라 영적인 면에서의 분별이 더욱더 필요하다는 것입니다. 우리의 신앙생활과 관련해서 우리가 믿음을 가지는 것과 관련해서 역시 마찬가지예요. 우리의 믿음에 관련해서 수많은 사람들이 많은 이야기를 합니다.
설교 강단에서 설교하는 사람이 있고, 아니면 우리 성도들끼리 이야기하면서 이런 권면을 하기도 하고 저런 권면을 하기도 하고 신앙생활을 해 나가는 길 가운데 우리 가운데 수많은 사람들이 이런 조언들 저런 조언들이 너무나도 많이 우리들에게 들려오게 되는데, 그런 조언들이 들릴 때 그 말이 맞는가 하고 무조건 따라갈 것이 아니라 그냥 신앙에 관련된 이야기니까, 텔레비전에서 기독교 방송에서 나오는 이야기니까, 유명한 배우가 간증한 이야기니까 무조건 따라갈 것이 아니라 과연 그것이 정말 하나님의 말씀에 맞는 것인가 한번 다시 한번 재점검해 보아야 하는 거죠. 왜 그래야 됩니까? 요한일서 4장 1절 말씀에 기록하기를 “사랑하는 자들아 영을 다 믿지 말고 오직 영들이 하나님께 속하였나 분별하라 많은 거짓 선지자가 세상에 나왔음이라”
어쩌다가 한 명 나온 게 아니라 정말 많은 거짓 선지자가 세상에 많이 나와 있기 때문에 그냥 따라갈 것이 아니라 잘 분별해서, 그냥 믿지 말고 하나님의 말씀에 부합한 것인지 하나님의 말씀과 다른 것인지 분별하는 지혜가 우리에게 필요하다 말씀하고 있는 것입니다. 로마서 12장 2절 말씀에서도 가르쳐 주시기를 “너희는 이 세대를 본받지 말고 오직 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받아 하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하시고 온전하신 뜻이 무엇인지 분별하도록 하라” 그냥 “다 믿어라” 말씀하시지 아니하고 분별하라고 성경은 가르쳐 주고 있습니다. 제가 “믿으라”는 말보다도 “믿지 말라”는 말을 더 많이 하나요? 아무튼 많이 하죠. 믿지 말라 믿지 말라는 말을 많이 하고 있는데, 그것은 제가 많이 하는 것이 아니라 사실은 균형 있게 이야기해야 되는데 안타깝게도 “균형 있게 이야기하지 말고 무조건 믿어라 무조건 믿어라”라고만 이야기하고 있기 때문에 수많은 사람들이 이단으로 빠져나가는 거예요.
무조건 믿으라고 하니까 무조건 믿다가 잘못된 길로 따라가는 거예요. 무조건 믿으라고 하니까 소경이 인도하는 대로 소경을 따라가다가 같이 구덩이에 빠지는 거예요. 성경의 가르침은 무조건 믿으라고도 되어 있지만 믿어야 할 것은 믿어야 되겠지만 믿지 말아야 할 것은 믿지 말아야 되는 것이 당연한 것이고, 그래서 우리가 영적인 면에서도 어떻게 해야 될 것인가? 모든 사람들이, 모든 말하는 사람들이 진실을 이야기하는 것이 아니라 때로는 거짓을 이야기할 수 있고 왜곡된 이야기를 할 수 있고 과장된 이야기를 할 수도 있기 때문에 과연 무엇이 하나님께서 원하시는 진리의 말씀인지 우리가 진지하게 분별하지 아니하면 그러면 우리가 잘못된 길로 간다고 하는 사실을 기억하면서 우리가 영적인 분별력을 가져야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 만일 우리가 분별하지 못하게 된다면 어떻게 되겠습니까?
그냥 누가 하는 말대로 그 말대로 무조건 믿고 따라가면, “보지 않고 믿는 자, 무조건 믿는 자가 복되다”고 했으니까 그냥 믿으면 복된 것일까요? 아니면 잘못된 것일까요? 잘못된 것이에요. 아합 왕은 거짓 선지자들이 거짓으로 하나님의 말씀이라고 하면서 아합 왕에게 이야기를 했습니다. “아합 왕이시여, 이번에 전쟁에 나가십시오. 하나님께서 아합 왕에게 전쟁에 나가라고 말씀하십니다.” 그 이야기를 몇 명이 이야기했어요? 수백 명의 선지자들이 이구동성으로 “아합 왕이시여, 당신이 전쟁에 나가야 한다고, 그러면 하나님께서 승리를 주실 것이라고 하나님께서 말씀하셨다”고 한 명의 선지자가 이야기한 것이 아니라 수많은 선지자들이 아합에게 다 이야기를 했어요. 그런데 그 거짓 선지자들이 어떤 선지자예요? 다 거짓 선지자인 겁니다.
오늘날에도 수많은 사람들이 오늘날에도 잘못된 크리스천이 잘못된 이야기를 듣고 전쟁을 하기도 하고 악한 일을 하기도 하면서 하나님의 뜻이라고 착각하고 있는 경우가 많이 있는데, 결국 아합 왕은 미가야 선지자와 같은 참된 선지자의 이야기는 듣지 않고 악한 선지자들의 이야기를 들었다가 결국 전쟁터에서 죽임을 당하는 안타까운 결과를 가져오게 되었던 것이죠. 오늘날에도 수많은 성도들이 아합은 아니지만 무조건 믿다가 무조건 따라가다가 이단에 끌려가서 자신의 인생을 망치고 재산을 다 날려버리고 청춘을 날리고 모든 것들을 다 파괴당하는 안타까운 모습을 보이고 있다고 하는 게 얼마나 안타까운지 모릅니다. 오늘 본문의 말씀은 우리들에게 경종을 울려주는 메시지입니다.
사람들이 하는 그 말이 진실이 아닐 수가 있다고 하는 사실을 기억하면서 정말 진리가 무엇인가 우리가 분별하면서 하나님의 말씀을 잘 분별하지 아니하면 잘못될 수 있다고 하는 사실을 기억하면서 믿음으로 순종하는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 오늘날의 수많은 사람들이 다 여러 가지 목적을 가지고 우리들에게 다가옵니다. 나에게 돈을 빌려주면 갚겠다고 거짓말을 합니다. 나에게 돈을 투자하면 내가 몇십 배로 돈을 돌려주겠다고 이야기를 합니다. 그런 말들에 그냥 무조건 믿고 따라서 돈을 빌려줄 게 아니라… 어떤 사람은 자기가 불쌍한 것처럼 거짓말을 해 가면서 “내가 이런 어려움에 처했고 저런 어려움에 처했다”고 불쌍한 척 이야기를 하면서 사람들의 그 자비의 마음을 악용해서 교인들의 돈을 뜯어가려고 하는 그런 일들을 하는 사람들도 있습니다.
그런 말들에 속아 넘어갈 것이 아니라 그런 것에 도와준다고 하는 것은 오히려 그 사람을 더 패망하게 만드는 것이고 그 사람이 더 잘못된 길로 가게 만드는 것이기 때문에 우리가 잘 영적으로 분별해서 그런 잘못된 일에 우리가 연루되지 아니하도록 우리는 어떻게 해야 되는가? 말을 들을 때 그냥 무조건 다 들을 것이 아니라 진실이 어디까지고 진실이 아닌 것이 무엇인가, 왜곡이 무엇인가, 과장이 무엇인가 잘 분별하는 우리 모두가 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 그런데 우리가 늘 속아 넘어가는 이유가 어디에 있을까요? 우리가 진리를 보지 못하고 잘 분별하지 못하고 우리가 자꾸만 거짓에 속아 넘어가는 이유가 어디에 있겠습니까? 속아 넘어가는 이유, 그것은 우리가 우리의 마음 가운데 하나님이 아닌 우상이 자리 잡고 있을 때 우리는 속아 넘어가게 되는 겁니다.
하나님을 우리의 마음속에 모시는 것이 아니라 탐욕이 우리의 우상이 되어 버릴 때, 내가 성공하고자 하는 우상이 우리의 마음의 우상이 되어 버렸을 때, 또는 내가 높아지겠다고 하는 명예를 얻겠다고 하는 그런 우상이 우리들의 마음을 가득 채우고 있을 때 우리들은 쉽게 속아 넘어가는 것이죠. 정치 이데올로기가 우리들의 우상이 되어 있을 때 가짜뉴스에 속아 넘어가게 되어 있는 것… 우리의 마음 가운데 하나님이 아닌 다른 것이 우리의 마음을 채우게 되면 그 우상으로 우리들의 눈이 가려져 버리고, 그 우상으로 인해서 우리의 귀가 막혀버리게 되면 진실을 볼 수가 없는 것이죠. 이사야 6장 9절 말씀에 이렇게 표현합니다. “여호와께서 이르시되 가서 이 백성에게 이르기를 너희가 듣기는 들어도 깨닫지 못할 것이요 보기는 보아도 알지 못하리라 하여”라고 말씀해 주고 있는데, 왜 이스라엘 민족들이 보기는 보아도 깨닫지 못합니까? 듣기는 들어도 깨닫지 못하는 이해하지 못하는 이유가 무엇입니까?
그 이스라엘 민족의 마음 가운데 우상이 가득 차 있기 때문에 그래요. 그래서 내가 욕심에 이끌리게 되면 거짓말인데 돈을 빌려줘요. 욕심이라고 하는 탐욕이 내 마음의 우상이 되어버리면, 이것을 내가 빌려주면 내가 패가망신당할 수 있겠구나 돈을 돌려받지 못하겠구나 생각을 못 하고 돈을 빌려주는 거예요. 왜? 우상이 내 마음을 가로막고 있어서 내 눈을 가로막고 귀를 가로막아서 정상적인 판단을 하지 못하는 겁니다. 우상을 섬기게 되면 어떤 결과가 나타나는가? 시편 115편 4절에서 8절 말씀에 이렇게 표현합니다. “그들의 우상들은 은과 금이요 사람의 손으로 만든 것이라 입이 있어도 말하지 못하며 눈이 있어도 보지 못하며 귀가 있어도 듣지 못하며 코가 있어도 냄새 맡지 못하며 손이 있어도 만지지 못하며 발이 있어도 걷지 못하며 목구멍이 있어도 작은 소리조차 내지 못하느니라 우상들을 만드는 자들과 그것을 의지하는 자들이 다 그와 같으리로다” 우상과 같이 될 것이다.
우상을 만들고 우상에 의지하게 되면 어떻게 되는가? 내가 우상처럼 눈이 있어도 보지 못하고, 내가 우상처럼 귀가 있어도 듣지 못하고… 내가 내 마음 가운데 욕심이 가득 차게 되면 정상적인 판단이 안 되는 거예요. 정치 이데올로기가 내 마음을 가득 채워버리면은 정상적인 판단이 안 되는 거예요. 무슨 진리를 알려줘도 다 들리지가 않는 거예요. 정상적인 판단을 못 하는 거야. 아합 왕은 왜 거짓 선지자들의 말에 속아 넘어갔는가? 그의 마음 가운데 탐욕이 가득 차버릴 때 미가야 선지자가 들려주시는 하나님의 말씀은 자신의 마음에 와닿지 않는 겁니다. 그런데 탐욕을 가지고 이야기를 들었을 때 거짓 선지자들이 하는 그 이야기는 너무나도 잘 들리는 거예요. 가짜 거짓의 이야기만 들리는 겁니다. 그래서 우리가 어떻게 해야 되는가? 우리들의 마음 가운데 우상들을 내어버리고 우리 주님을 나의 마음 가운데 참된 주님으로 모시고 고백하며 믿음으로 살아가는 우리 모두가 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다.
오늘 우리들의 삶 가운데서 기도하며 엎드려야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 주님 예수 그리스도의 보혈의 피로 저희들을 씻어주셔서 저희들의 눈이 뜨게 해 주옵소서. 저희들의 마음 가운데 우상을 제거해 주셔서 잘 분별할 수 있는 지혜를 허락하여 주옵소서. 기도하는 가운데 믿음으로 승리하는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

The Wisdom of Discernment in a World of Deception
When there is a person buying an item and another trying to sell it, they bargain with different objectives in mind. The seller tries to present the item well, explaining to the buyer how good or valuable it is. On the other hand, the buyer points out the flaws of the item, acting as if it has little value to lower the price. This represents the difference in perspective between a buyer and a seller. Such occurrences are common in our daily lives. Don’t we all buy things?
I remember a time when we had to buy a car in the United States. After a successful negotiation, we reached the moment where we just had to pay and finalize the purchase. At that final second, my wife, with eyes like a hawk, carefully inspected the car and said, “There’s a scratch here.” It was a tiny mark that was barely noticeable and had no impact on how the car ran. Nevertheless, she found that scratch and expressed her dissatisfaction because of it, eventually managing to knock $500 off the price. How much is $500? In today’s currency, is it about 800,000 won? Since we were living on a tight budget at the time, that was a huge amount to save. I still vividly remember the good feeling of purchasing and driving that car.
Perhaps the words of Proverbs 20:14 reflect the hearts of all buyers. While bargaining, they act uninterested or as if they don’t like the item, even turning away. However, after they have purchased it, they go to their friends and begin to boast loudly. They brag about what a great thing they bought at such a cheap price. This is how we behave; it is a sentiment shared by almost everyone. Proverbs 20:14 records this very story: “‘Bad, bad,’ says the buyer, but when he goes away, then he boasts”.
Why is this recorded in Proverbs 20:14? What does it want us to do? Does it provide wisdom for how we should live? Looking at this verse, we can see that people do not always speak the truth honestly. What is in the buyer’s heart? A thought like, “Wow, this is so good, I must make it mine!” But if that heart is revealed, what happens? They end up buying it at a high price. To avoid that, they hide their true feelings. They conceal the fact that they like the item from the seller, sometimes saying the item is not good or even bad, in order to buy it as cheaply as possible. This is the attitude within a buyer’s heart.
Thus, what people say is not always a reflection of what they are actually thinking. This scripture shows that people may speak differently from the truth because they have a specific purpose. Of course, they are not necessarily telling a 100% complete lie, but rather mixing a bit of truth with exaggeration and distortion. Because they are twisting things slightly, we shouldn’t conclude that a person’s words represent 100% of their heart when we listen to them. We can easily anticipate that there might be a reason, a hidden agenda, or a purpose behind why they are speaking that way. This is a realization we can gain from the words of Proverbs.
If that is the case, what kind of person is wise? Who can be called a sensible person? A sensible person is not someone who takes another’s words at face value. Rather, a wise person is someone who can filter and discern the truth within what is being said, distinguishing it from exaggeration and distortion to make a sound judgment. Because words can contain truth but also exaggeration, distortion, and even serious lies, should we blindly believe the words of others? No, we should not. Therefore, when we listen to people, we shouldn’t just accept everything at face value; instead, a bit of analysis is needed to see what their intention and purpose are. Blindly trusting and following the words of others can lead to great trouble, like “getting hit on the back of the head by an axe you trusted” (a Korean proverb for betrayal), and can result in significant loss.
I once traveled to Tsushima Island, Japan. It was a trip organized by the presbytery, where pastors and elders went together. During the trip, as we were sightseeing, the guide explained the history of Tsushima and its relationship with Korea very passionately. We learned a lot. However, the guide would often say things aimed at selling products. He was “laying the bait” in advance. To make the tourists buy many items at the gift shop, he set the stage with foreshadowing and stories. Then, he said something like this:
“There are about three things that are good to buy when you come to Japan. Even if you don’t buy anything else, you will profit if you buy these. Since you are all pastors and elders, I am telling you this with truly good intentions.” I don’t remember all three, but I’ll tell you what I bought: germanium. He said, “If you wear this germanium bracelet, it improves blood circulation. Poor blood circulation is the root of all diseases.” He listed every possible ailment—back pain, cold hands and feet, headaches, insomnia, arthritis—and claimed that all of them were caused by circulation issues. He insisted that wearing a germanium bracelet on your wrist or neck would fix the circulation and heal all these symptoms.
As he was speaking, an elder who was listening agreed, saying, “I’ve tried it before, and the effect is really great.” That day, everyone bought them. But it turned out to be no help at all. I bought it at a high price, wore it a couple of times, and eventually got rid of it. I later found out that the guide and the elder had planned it together. We must consider the intention and purpose of the person speaking. Often, people hide their true intentions and speak differently to gain their own goals—to win someone’s heart, to get money from them, or to gain a profit.
Therefore, who is a wise person in this world? A wise person does not accept 100% of what people say uncritically at face value. Instead, they carefully discern how much truth is in the words and where the exaggeration and distortion lie. We must filter out the wrong information and accept only the truth so that we don’t suffer losses or be exploited. This is the wisdom we must meditate on today. Especially when our Enoch Society (senior group) members go somewhere, there is always a salesman who comes up and tries to sell this and that. Most of it is nonsense. Yet, everyone buys them. When they speak, it’s not 100% true; they exaggerate to sell the product, emphasizing a small effect or distorting facts. We must learn the lesson of discerning the truth within someone’s words.
We must be especially careful because we live in an era overflowing with political fake news. With local elections coming up in June, all sorts of “black propaganda” (slander) will start to run wild. To win the hearts of Christians, messages are sent out claiming, “That person is anti-Christian,” “That candidate will destroy the church,” “They want to close the church,” or “They support homosexuality,” using distorted and exaggerated information. What is politics? It has often become a game of winning at all costs by distorting facts to achieve one’s purpose. When such fake news spreads around us, if we don’t discern the truth from the lies and exaggerations, who suffers the loss? We ourselves do. We must investigate whether something is truly a fact.
The same applies when we go to the hospital. If you go to a newly opened hospital, they might diagnose you with everything, saying you need this test, that test, surgery, and various treatments. You have to discern whether you truly need that treatment because you are sick, or if they are urging you to have surgery just because they need to make money after opening. You shouldn’t just listen to one hospital; you should go to another and get a second or third opinion. By comparing and analyzing the opinions of different doctors, you can discern the right treatment. If you only listen to one person, you might not only lose all your money but also undergo an unnecessary surgery and suffer even more pain. It’s the same when you go to fix a car. They might say there’s a problem when there isn’t one, telling you to fix this, fix that, change the water pump, or fix the transmission.
They say all sorts of things, but you must check if it’s true by going to other repair shops and comparing their stories. If you don’t analyze several opinions, you could end up with a wrong result. Today, we live in such a great era that we have AI to help us check if something is fake or real through fact-checking. These days, I use Gemini quite often. If someone gives me a YouTube link or a text, I ask the AI. I input the link or text and say, “Please verify the facts of this video or text.”
Then it tells me, “This part is true and has evidence, but this part is an exaggeration not based on evidence, this is a distortion, and this is incorrect.” While AI is not 100% correct all the time, if you can’t even trust the AI, you should at least ask Gemini, ask ChatGPT, and ask various sources. We must learn the wisdom that unless we make a constant effort to know the truth instead of blindly following a single opinion, we will inevitably suffer losses.
Even more importantly, we need discernment not only in daily life but also in the spiritual realm. The same applies to our religious life and our faith. Regarding our faith, many people say many things. There is the person preaching from the pulpit, or there are the words of advice we give to each other as believers. In the journey of our faith, we hear so many different pieces of advice. When we hear them, we shouldn’t just follow them blindly because it’s a religious story, or because it was on a Christian TV broadcast, or because a famous actor gave a testimony. We must re-examine whether it truly aligns with the Word of God.
Why must we do this? 1 John 4:1 records: “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world”. It’s not just one person who appeared; many false prophets have gone out into the world. Therefore, we shouldn’t just follow them; we must discern carefully. We shouldn’t just believe, but possess the wisdom to see if it aligns with God’s Word. Romans 12:2 also teaches us: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect”. The Bible doesn’t say “believe everything”; it teaches us to discern.
Do I say “do not believe” more often than “believe”? Well, I do say it quite often. I often say do not believe, do not believe. I am not the only one saying this; in fact, we should speak with balance. Unfortunately, because many only say “do not speak with balance, just believe, just believe,” many people fall into cults. Because they are told to believe unconditionally, they follow a wrong path. Because they are told to believe unconditionally, the blind follow the blind and they both fall into a pit. While the Bible teaches us to believe what we should believe, it is natural that we shouldn’t believe what we shouldn’t.
So, what should we do in the spiritual realm? Since not everyone who speaks is telling the truth—sometimes they tell lies, distorted stories, or exaggerated tales—we must have spiritual discernment. Unless we seriously discern what the truth is that God wants, we will go down a wrong path. What happens if we fail to discern? If we just blindly believe and follow whatever someone says, will we be blessed because it is said, “blessed are those who believe without seeing”? Or is that wrong? It is wrong. False prophets told King Ahab lies, claiming they were the Word of God. They said, “O King Ahab, go to war this time. God is telling you to go to war.” How many said this? Hundreds of prophets said in unison, “O King Ahab, you must go to war, and then God will give you victory.” It wasn’t just one prophet; many prophets told this to Ahab. But what kind of prophets were they? They were all false prophets.
Even today, there are many cases where wrong Christians hear wrong stories and go to war or do evil things, mistakenly thinking it is God’s will. Ultimately, King Ahab failed to listen to a true prophet like Micaiah and instead listened to the wicked prophets, leading to the tragic result of being killed on the battlefield. Even today, so many believers—though not like Ahab—blindly believe and follow until they are dragged into cults, ruining their lives, losing their wealth, throwing away their youth, and having everything destroyed. How tragic it is. Today’s scripture is a message that sounds an alarm for us.
We must remember that the words people speak may not be the truth. While discerning what the true truth is, we must remember that unless we discern God’s Word well, we can go wrong. I pray in the name of the Lord that we may all be those who obey in faith. Today, many people approach us with various motives. They lie, saying they will pay us back if we lend them money. They say they will return our investment several dozen times over if we invest. We shouldn’t just blindly believe such words and lend money. Some people lie and act as if they are pitiful, saying, “I am in this trouble and that trouble,” using people’s mercy to take money from church members.
We shouldn’t be deceived by such words. Helping such a person actually leads them toward ruin and a wrong path. Therefore, we must discern spiritually to avoid getting involved in such wrong things. How should we behave? When we hear words, we shouldn’t just listen to everything; we must discern how much is true, what is not true, what is a distortion, and what is an exaggeration.
Why is it that we are always deceived? Why is it that we fail to see the truth, fail to discern well, and keep getting tricked by lies? The reason we are deceived is that an idol other than God resides in our hearts. When greed becomes our idol instead of welcoming God into our hearts, when the desire to succeed becomes the idol of our hearts, or when the desire for honor and fame fills our hearts, we are easily deceived. When a political ideology becomes our idol, we are bound to be deceived by fake news. When something other than God fills our hearts, our eyes are covered by that idol, and our ears are blocked by it, making us unable to see the truth. Isaiah 6:9 expresses it this way: “And he said, ‘Go, and say to this people: “Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive”’”. Why is it that the people of Israel see but do not understand? What is the reason they hear but do not understand or perceive?
It is because the hearts of the people of Israel are filled with idols. Thus, when led by greed, even if it’s a lie, people lend money. When greed becomes the idol of the heart, they fail to think, “If I lend this, I might be ruined, I might not get the money back.” Why? Because an idol is blocking the heart, covering the eyes and ears, and preventing normal judgment. What results from serving an idol? Psalm 115:4–8 records: “Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell. They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat. Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them”. You will become like the idol.
What happens if you make an idol and rely on it? Like the idol, you will have eyes but not see, and have ears but not hear. When the heart is filled with greed, normal judgment becomes impossible. When political ideology fills the heart, normal judgment is impossible. No matter what truth you are told, you cannot hear it. You cannot make a normal judgment. Why was King Ahab deceived by the words of false prophets? When his heart was filled with greed, the Word of God delivered by the prophet Micaiah did not reach his heart. But when he listened with greed, the stories told by the false prophets sounded so good. He only heard the stories of lies.
Therefore, what should we do? We must cast out the idols from our hearts and welcome our Lord as the true Lord of our hearts, confessing Him and living in faith. We must pray and fall prostrate in our lives today. “Lord, wash us with the precious blood of Jesus Christ and let our eyes be opened. Remove the idols from our hearts and grant us the wisdom to discern well.” I pray in the name of the Lord that we may all triumph in faith through prayer.
