영국의 희극 배우 찰리 채플린이라고 하는 사람이 있는데 혹시 아십니까? 다들 보시는 줄 압니다. 저도 찰리 채플린 흉내를 내면서 그렇게 지내곤 했었는데요. 뒤뚱거리며 참 재미있게 코미디를 하고 하는 그 찰리 채플린의 일화 가운데 이런 이야기가 하나 있습니다. 어느 날 찰리 채플린이 혼자 길을 가고 있는데, 어느 영국의 시골 마을에 가게 되었을 때 그 장터에서 대회가 열리는 것을 보았습니다. 무슨 대회냐면 ‘찰리 채플린 흉내 내기 대회’입니다. 장난기가 발동한 찰리 채플린이 자신의 신분을 밝히지 않고 그 찰리 채플린 흉내 내기 대회에 참가하게 됐습니다. 결과가 어떻게 되었을까요? 3등을 했습니다. 놀랍게도 찰리 채플린보다 더 찰리 채플린 같은 사람이 2명이나 더 있었던 것이죠. 어쩌면 이 세상이 그런 것과 비슷한 것이 아닐까 싶습니다. 가짜가 진짜처럼 판치고 다니는 그런 세상에 우리가 살고 있는 것인데, 그것은 사회 각 분야에서, 각 영역에서 그런 일들이 많이 발생하는 게 아닐까 싶습니다.
오늘 본문의 말씀은 예수님께서 무엇이 진짜 믿음인가라고 하는 것에 대해서 가르쳐 주신 예수님의 말씀입니다. 예수님께서는 우리가 외형적으로 신앙 고백을 하는 것이 진짜 믿음이 아니라 참된 믿음이 무엇인가, 참된 믿음은 겉으로 나타나는 외형적인 표현이 아니라 주님의 말씀을 듣고 그 말씀에 따라 순종하는 것, 그 말씀에 따라 행하는 자가 참된 믿음을 가진 것이라고 오늘 말씀해 주고 계십니다. 이 말씀을 보면서 우리가 오해하지 말아야 하는 것이 있다고 한다면, 그러니까 우리가 행위로 구원받는 것이라고 말할 수는 없습니다. 성경 전체의 가르침은 무엇을 이야기합니까? 우리 인생들이 행위로서는 구원받을 수 없다고 하는 것을 가르쳐 주고 있는 것이죠. 우리가 아무리 노력하고 아무리 최선을 다한다고 할지라도, 우리가 아무리 의롭게 살려고 한다고 할지라도 하나님의 기준에 비추어 보면 우리는 한없이 부족한 것이죠. 완벽한 사람이 없는 것이죠.
그래서 우리 가운데 그 누구도 하나님 앞에 당당히 나아가서 내가 이렇게 완전한 사람이라고 말할 수 있는 사람은 단 한 사람도 없다고 하는 것이 성경 전체에서 가르쳐 주는 그런 교훈이라 하겠습니다. 그러면 우리가 어떻게 구원을 받는가, 어떻게 구원을 받게 되는 것이죠? 하나님의 은혜로 구원을 받는 겁니다. 우리가 불완전해서 너무나도 부족해서 하나님 앞에 감히 나아갈 수 없는데 하나님께서 우리들에게 손을 내밀어 주신 것이죠. 우리를 불쌍히 여겨주셔서 우리를 건져주신 것이죠. 예수 그리스도께서 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으심으로 말미암아 내 대신에 내가 지었던 모든 죗값을 치르시고 우리를 살려주시는 그 은혜 때문에 우리가 구원을 받고, 그 주님의 은혜를 믿음으로 그 구원을 우리의 것으로 만든다고 하는 것이 성경 전체에서 가르쳐 주고 있는 구원의 진리라고 하겠습니다.
그런데 오늘 예수님께서 하시는 말씀은 우리가 무엇으로 구원을 받는가에 대한 질문이 아니라, 참된 믿음이 무엇인가에 대한 질문을 예수님께서 답해주고 있는 겁니다. 무엇이 참된 믿음일까요? 그것은 겉으로만 외형적으로 나타나는 것이 참된 믿음이 아니라, 하나님의 말씀을 들었을 때 그 말씀을 나의 것으로 받아들이고 신실하게 순종하는 자, 하나님의 말씀대로 살려고 하는 그 사람이 참된 믿음이라고 하는 사실을 오늘 우리가 분명하게 기억할 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 이제 6월 3일이면 지방선거를 하게 될 텐데요. 지난 금요일과 토요일에 벌써 선거를 하셨죠? 벌써 하셨습니까? 보니까 선거율이 굉장히 높더라고, 투표율이 높더라고요. 아무튼 지방선거가 있는데 지방선거가 있을 때마다 그리고 전국적인 선거가 있을 때마다 수많은 정치인들이 나서서 이야기를 합니다. “내가 여러분들을 위해서 봉사하겠습니다. 이 나라를 위해서 섬기겠습니다.”
이야기하는데 그 말만 들으면 전부 다 다 애국자인 것 같아요. 전부 다 다 훌륭한 지도자인 것 같아요. 예전에 제가 택시를 타고 가면서 어떤 택시 운전사가 농담조로 하는 이야기를 들었는데, 그분이 하는 말씀이 이번에 나온 후보들 모두가 다 당선됐으면 좋겠대요. 한 명이 아니라 다 뽑아줬으면 좋겠대요. 왜? 그 사람들이 하는 이야기를 들어보니까 다 좋다는 거예요. 그러니까 다 뽑아줬으면 좋겠다, 모든 사람들이 당선되었으면 좋겠다 그렇게 농담을 하시던데, 사실 그 농담의 그 뒤에는 아주 중요한 뼈가 숨어 있는 것이죠. 말은 그렇게 하는데 정말 그대로 행할 사람은 누가 있을까라고 하는 자조적인 목소리가 아닐까 싶습니다.
말로는 자유민주주의를 이야기하는데 실제로는 독재처럼 행동하는 사람이 있고, 말로는 국민을 위한다고 하는데 사실은 소수의 기득권자들만을 위한 사람들이 있고, 말과 행동이 다르기 때문에 그들이 하는 말이 아니라 과연 어떤 정책을 실제로 펼치는가, 어떤 정책을 실제로 만들어내는가, 어떤 법을 만들어내는가가 훨씬 중요하기 때문에 그것을 보고 사람을 판단해야 하는 것처럼… 믿음이라고 하는 것은 무엇인가, 참된 믿음이 무엇인가? 많은 사람들이 내가 주님을 믿는다고 말하고 내가 하나님의 백성이라고 말하지만, 참된 믿음이 무엇인가? 그것은 단순히 외형적으로 믿음을 표현하는 것이 믿음이 아니라, 그것이 참된 믿음이 아니라 예수님께서는 그 말씀대로 하나님의 말씀대로 따라 순종하는 것이 참된 믿음이라고 가르쳐 주신 이 말씀을 오늘 이 시간 기억하며 묵상할 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
오늘 이 말씀 가운데서 우리가 생각해 볼 수 있는 것이 있다고 한다면, 참된 믿음이라고 말할 수 없는 것이 무엇인가를 한번 생각해 보았으면 좋겠습니다. 우리는 이것이 참된 믿음이라고 착각하기 쉬운데, 참된 믿음이 아닌 것이 무엇입니까? 그것은 열정이 있는 것이 참된 믿음이라고 하는 것을 증명하지 않습니다. 물론 참된 믿음을 가지고 있다고 한다면 열정이 나오는 것이 당연하겠지만, 열정이 있는 것만으로는 그 믿음이 진짜 믿음인지 알 수 없다고 하는 이야기입니다. 마태복음 7장 21절 말씀에서 예수님께서는 말씀해 주셨습니다. “나더러 주여 주여 하는 자마다 다 천국에 들어갈 것이 아니요 다만 하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 뜻대로 행하는 자라야 들어가리라” 무슨 이야기입니까? 진짜 믿음이 무엇인가, 진짜 믿음은 주여 주여 하면서 열정적인 믿음을 보이는 것처럼 보이는 게 그게 진짜가 아니라, 그거 외에 참된 믿음이란 무엇인가 하나님의 뜻대로 행하는 것이 참된 믿음이라 말씀하고 계시는 것이죠.
우리는 종종 혼동합니다. 우리가 예수님을 믿는다고 고백만 하면 구원을 얻는 것이고, 그렇게 고백하는 것이 그게 진짜 믿음이라고 착각할 때가 많이 있습니다. 그런데 정말 그렇습니까? 내가 예수님을 믿는다고 고백하면 그 사람은 구원받는 것일까요? 어떻습니까? 성경에 보면 그렇다고 표현하고 있는 말씀이 있습니다. 어떤 말씀이죠? 로마서 10장 12절, 13절 말씀에 보면 “유대인이나 헬라인이나 차별이 없음이라 한 분이신 주께서 모든 사람의 주가 되사 그를 부르는 모든 사람에게 부요하시도다 누구든지 주의 이름을 부르는 자는 구원을 받으리라” 로마서 10장 13절의 말씀 가운데 누구든지 주의 이름을 부르는 자는 구원을 얻는다고 이야기했으니까, 예수님을 부르기만 하면 예수님을 믿는다고 말하기만 하면 그것이 진짜 믿음이요 그것이 구원받는 믿음이라고 착각하기가 쉬워요. 그런데 정말 그런가요?
아니에요. 로마서 10장 13절에서 말씀하고 있는 것은 부르기만 하면 다 구원받는다고 하는 이야기가 아니라, 유대인이나 헬라인이나 누구든지 참된 믿음이 있다고 한다면 구원받는 것이지 사람이 인종에 의해서 차별받는다고 하는 그런 의미가 아닙니다. 유대인만 구원받는 것이 아니라, 돈 있는 사람만 구원받는 것이 아니라, 성인들만 구원받는 것이 아니라, 유대인이 아닌 이방인들도, 남자가 아닌 여자라고 할지라도, 돈 있는 사람이 아니라 돈이 없는 사람이라고 할지라도, 지식이 있는 사람이 아니라 지식이 없는 사람이라고 할지라도 그 누구라도 예수님을 믿고 영접하는 자가 구원을 받는다고 하는 의미에서 누구든지 주의 이름을 부르는 자는 구원을 받는 것이라고 말씀하고 있지만, 단순히 부른다고 하는 것 자체가 구원을 보장하는 것은 아닙니다.
오늘 예수님께서 하시는 말씀 가운데 사람이 주여 주여 한다고 해서 구원을 받는 것이 아니라, 그 하나님의 말씀대로 행하는 자가 구원을 얻는다고 말씀하신 것을 기억해야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 우리는 종종 생각하기를 열정이 있으면 진짜 믿음을 가진 것이라고 착각하기가 쉽습니다. 그렇게 착각하는 이유는 믿음이 있다고 한다면 열정이 반드시 따라 나오기 때문에 그렇습니다. 사랑을 하게 되면 사랑하는 모습이 당연히 나오게 되어 있는 것처럼, 우리가 진짜 믿음을 가지게 되면 열정이 반드시 따라 나오기 때문에 열정을 보면 믿음이 있는 것이라고 착각하기가 쉽지만, 그러나 열정이 있다고 해서 모두가 다 진짜 믿음을 가진 것이 아닌 것이죠. 우리는 평가할 때 사람이 얼마나 뜨거운가, 얼마나 전도를 열심히 하는가, 얼마나 교회 일에 열심히 하는가, 그 사람이 정말 얼마나 열정적으로 신앙생활하는가를 가지고 그 사람의 믿음을 판단하려고 합니다.
하지만 예수님께서는 주여 주여 한다고 해서 그것이 진짜 믿음이 아니라고 말씀하시는 것이죠. 열정은 누구에게도 있었나요? 바리새인들에게도 있었어요. 바리새인들은 기도하는 데 열정이 있었고, 금식하는 데 열정이 있었고, 구제하는 데 열정이 있었어요. 하지만 예수님께서는 그들을 바라보시면서 “화 있을진저 외식하는 서기관들과 바리새인들이여” 하면서 책망하셨는데요. 왜냐하면 그들이 열정은 있었지만 진정으로 하나님을 사랑하는 마음이 그 마음 가운데 없었기 때문이고, 하나님의 말씀대로 순종하는 모습을 볼 수가 없었기 때문입니다. 열정으로 따진다고 한다면 회심하기 전 바울의 모습도 열정이 있는 사람이었습니다. 열정으로 따진다고 한다면 아나니아와 삽비라와 같은 사람도 열정이 있는 사람이었습니다. 하지만 그 모든 것이 열정이 있는 것이 정답이 아니라, 사실은 열정을 보이기 이전에 그 마음 가운데 주님의 뜻대로 순종하는 믿음의 결단이 있어야 될 줄로 믿습니다.
두 번째로 우리가 착각하지 말아야 될 것이 있다고 한다면 선포를 하고 있다고 하는 것이 믿음의 증거가 될 수는 없다고 하는 점입니다. 마태복음 7장 22절의 말씀 가운데 이렇게 기록합니다. “그 날에 많은 사람이 나더러 이르되 주여 주여 우리가 주의 이름으로 선지자 노릇 하며” 선지자 노릇 했다고 하는 것이 무엇입니까? 하나님의 말씀을 선포했다는 거예요. 오늘날로 치면 목사 노릇을 했다고 하는 거예요. 오늘날로 치면 복음을 전했다고 하는 거예요. 그런데 그런 것을 했다고 하는 것이 참된 믿음을 가졌다고 하는 것을 의미하지 않는다고 말씀하고, 이것을 더 확대 적용한다고 한다면 우리가 옳은 말을 하는 것이 그 사람이 의롭다고 하는 것을 의미하지 않습니다. 많은 사람들이 의를 주장하고 정의를 부르짖지만 그렇게 정의를 부르짖는다고 하는 것이 그 사람이 정의롭다고 하는 것을 의미하지는 않습니다. 왜 그렇습니까?
맥스 루케이도(Max Lucado)라고 하는 사람은 말하기를 “우리가 다른 사람의 약점에 대해서 말하는 순간 우리는 나의 약점에 대해서는 생각할 필요가 없어지게 된다”라고 말을 했는데요. 사람들은 왜 정의를 부르짖는가? 정의를 부르짖으면 내가 정의로워진 것처럼 착각하고 그래서 나의 더러움을 감출 수 있기 때문에 그렇게 되는 것이죠. 오늘날도 역시 마찬가지입니다. 우리가 복음을 전하는 것이, 내가 전도를 한다고 하는 것이 그것이 내가 참된 믿음을 가지고 있다고 하는 것을 나타내는 것이 아닌 것이, 누구든지 말은 할 수 있어요. 누구처럼? 가룟 유다처럼 말할 수 있는 것이… 가룟 유다는 한 여인이 향유를 깨뜨려 예수님에게 부었을 때 가룟 유다는 아주 놀라운 말을 했습니다. “어찌하여 이 향유를 허비하느냐? 이 향유를 팔아 300데나리온을 얻어서 그것으로 가난한 자들을 도와줄 수 있지 않았겠느냐?” 얼마나 멋있는 말이에요. 얼마나 감동적인 말이에요. 우리가 허비할 것이 아니라 가난한 자를 도와주어야 된다.
가난한 자들을 도와주는 것이, 구제하는 것이 좋다고 하는 그 말… 어쩌면 가장 감동적인 말인데 성경은 분명하게 이야기합니다. 뭐라고 이야기하죠? “이렇게 말함은 가난한 자들을 생각함이 아니요 그는 도둑이라 돈궤를 맡고 거기 넣는 것을 훔쳐 가미러라” 표현하고 있는 거… 오늘날 수많은 사람들이 정의를 부르짖고 복음을 이야기하기도 하고 선교를 말하기도 하지만, 그러나 사실 그 뒤에서 참된 믿음을 가지고 있는가, 정말 바른 믿음을 가지고 있는가는 별개의 문제라고 하는 사실을 우리가 분명하게 기억해야 될 것이고, 그러한 선포의 화려함 속에 우리가 숨어서 나의 더러움을 감추려고 하고 있지는 않은지 날마다 날마다 우리 자신의 모습을 돌아보는 우리 모두가 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 뿐만 아니라 기적이 나타고 간증이 있다고 하는 것이 그 사람이 참된 믿음을 가지고 있다고 하는 증거가 아닙니다. 다시 마태복음 7장 22절의 말씀을 보면 하반절에 이렇게 표현합니다.
“주의 이름으로 귀신을 쫓아내며 주의 이름으로 많은 권능을 행하지 아니하였나이까 하리니” 많은 사람들이 주님 앞에 나타나서 이야기를 하는 겁니다. “주님 제가 주의 이름으로 권능을 행했습니다. 기적이 나타났습니다.” 우리들의 삶 가운데 기적이 나타나고 방언이 나타나고 또한 여러 가지 놀라운 신비한 일들이 일어나고 기도에 그런 경험들이 있다고 한다면, 기도 응답의 경험들이 있다고 한다면 그게 참된 믿음일까 생각하기가 쉽습니다. 그래서 어떤 사람들을 보면 “목사님 저도 방언을 하고 싶어요.” 그것만 하면 내가 참된 믿음이 될 것처럼 그렇게 생각하기가 쉽는데, 그게 아니라 귀신을 내어쫓은들 그러나 그것이 가짜 믿음이 될 수가 있다, 기도의 응답에 어떤 간증들이 있다고 한들 그것이 가짜 믿음이 될 수 있다고 주님께서 말씀하고 계시는 겁니다. 신명기 13장 1절에서부터 3절 말씀에 주님께서는 경고하셨습니다.
“너희 중에 선지자나 꿈꾸는 자가 일어나서 이적과 기사를 네게 보이고 그가 네게 말한 그 이적과 기사가 이루어지고 너희가 알지 못하던 다른 신들을 우리가 따라 섬기자고 말할지라도 너는 그 선지자나 꿈꾸는 자의 말을 청종하지 말라 이는 너희의 하나님 여호와께서 너희가 마음을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 너희의 하나님 여호와를 사랑하는 여부를 알려 하사 너희를 시험하심이니라” 기적이 이루어진다고 말하고 역사를 말하면서 우리를 현혹하게 할 때, 가짜 선지자가 가짜 목사가 가짜 영적인 지도자들이 나타나서 그런 일들을 할 때 거기에 속아 넘어갈 것이 아니라… 참된 믿음이란 무엇인가, 그 사람의 말이 아니라 기적들이 아니라 과연 하나님의 말씀에 신실하게 따르고 있는가를 우리가 확인해 보아야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 1740년대에 미국의 뉴잉글랜드 노샘프턴 지역에서 목회를 하셨던 조나단 에드워즈(Jonathan Edwards) 목사님이라고 하는 분이 계십니다. 미국의 영적 대각성 운동을 일으켰던 아주 유명한 목사님인데요.
그분의 영향력은 지금도 굉장히 많고 많은 사람들이 그분의 글과 이런 것에 많은 영향을 받은 목사님이 계시는데, 그 목사님이 그 당시에 했던 설교 그리고 그 설교를 묶어서 책으로 냈던 그 책이 지금 우리나라 말로 번역이 되어서 출간되었는데요. 《신앙감정론》이라고 하는 책이 있습니다. ‘리리지어스 어펙션스(Religious Affections)’라고 하는 책이 있는데, 그 책이 너무나도 유명한 책이고 그 책이리가 우리가 참된 믿음이 무엇인가에 대해서 써놓은 아주 중요한 책입니다. 여러분들에게 소개를 해드리고 싶기는 하지만 솔직하게 말씀드리면 재미가 하나도 없어요. 오늘날에는 짧은 문장 그리고 간단하고 예화도 섞이고 하는 그런 책이 있어야 읽기가 쉬운데, 이렇게 두꺼운 책에 한번 읽으려고 하면 너무나도 복잡해서 신학자나 목회자들도 읽기가 굉장히 어려운 책인데요.
그런데 그 책의 내용에 보면 무슨 내용이 있냐면, 우리의 참된 믿음의 증거가 무엇인가 내가 구원받았다고 하는 증거가 무엇인가에 대해서 그 책에서 이야기하면서 무슨 이야기를 하냐면 지적인 면에서, 그리고 감정적인 면에서, 의지적인 면에서 우리가 오해하지 말아야 된다. 먼저 지성적인 면에서 내가 구원을 받았다고 확신하는 것, 다른 사람들이 “당신은 구원받았습니다”라고 말하는 것 그런 것을 내가 알고 있다고 하는 것이 내가 구원받은 증거가 될 수 없다고 이야기합니다. 감정적인 측면에서 내가 어떤 통제할 수 없는 그런 감정에 격한 것을 내가 경험하게 되는데, 그러한 것이 내가 만들어낸 것이 아니라 자연스럽게 내게 감정이 일어나고 그 감정이 연속적으로 일어난다고 해서 그것이 내가 구원받은 증거가 될 수 없다고 이야기를 합니다.
의지적인 면에서 내가 신앙적인 일에 열정을 내고 사랑을 표현하고 신앙적인 그런 일들을 많이 한다고 하는 그런 의지적인 모습을 보인다고 하는 것이, 그 사람이 진짜 믿음을 가지고 구원받은 사람이라고 하는 것을 증거하는 것이 아니라고 이야기합니다. 우리가 생각하던 것에 정반대로 이야기하고 있는 거죠. 그러면서 참된 구원을 받았다고 하는 그 증거가 무엇인가, 참된 믿음의 증거가 무엇인가에 대해서 설명을 했는데 그것은 성령님의 내주하심으로 말미암아 내 마음의 변화가 일어나는 것이 그게 참된 구원의 증거요 참된 믿음의 증거라고 이야기합니다. 하나님에 대해서 참된 지식을 얻게 되고 구원에 대한 깊은 확신을 가지게 되며, 그리고 하나님을 사랑하고 하나님의 거룩하심에 대한 갈망들이 내 마음 가운데 있고 그리고 더 구체적으로는 성품의 변화가 일어나야 한다는 것이죠.
더욱더 겸손해지고 그리스도를 더 닮아가려고 하고 신앙의 균형이 잡히며 인내하고 감사하고 하나님의 말씀에 순종하려는 마음들이 우리들의 마음 가운데 일어나는 삶의 변화가 결국 그게 참된 믿음을 보여주는 증거요 구원받았음을 보여주는 증거라고 표현하고 있는데… 이 조나단 에드워즈 목사님의 그 이야기가 누구의 이야기랑 똑같아요? 예수님의 말씀이랑 사실은 똑같아요. 마태복음 7장 21절의 말씀 가운데서 “나더러 주여 주여 하는 자마다 다 천국에 들어갈 것이 아니요 다만 하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 뜻대로 행하는 자라야 들어가리라”라고 하셨던 그 주님의 말씀, 그 말씀이 오늘 이번 한 주간 동안 살아가는 동안에 늘 마음속에 새기고 묵상할 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 예수님께서는 그 믿음의 차이에 대해서 뭐라고 말씀하시냐면, 마치 반석 위에 지은 집과 모래 위에 지은 집의 차이로 말씀해 주셨습니다. 집을 반석에 짓나요? 이해가 잘 안 되죠. 모래 위에 짓는 사람도 있나요?
이해가 잘 안 되겠습니다마는 오늘날로 하자면 집을 지을 때 기초를 아주 단단하게, 단단한 그 기초 위에 집을 세우면 안전하죠. 땅을 그냥 땅 위에다 그냥 집을 짓는 것이 아니라 깊게 파서 아주 지반이 단단한 부분까지 내려서 그 위에 콘크리트를 깔고 집을 지어야 그 어떠한 상황 가운데서도 집이 흔들리지 않고 잘 서 있게 되는 겁니다. 하지만 그렇게 하지 않고 연약한 지반 위에, 비가 오거나 그러면 쓸려 나갈 수 있는 그런 연약한 지반 가운데 집을 세워놓는다고 하면 홍수가 나거나 그렇게 되면, 지진이 일어나고 나면 완전히 무너질 수밖에 없는 거죠. 당시 유대 사회에서는, 그 중동 지방에서는 갑자기 비가 내려서 갑자기 물이 흐르게 되는 경우가 있는데 그런 와디 가운데 집을 지어놓게 된다고 하면 비가 안 올 때는 괜찮은 것 같아요.

The True Measure of Faith: Building Upon the Unshakable Rock of Obedience
There is a British comedic actor named Charlie Chaplin—I assume you all know of him. Everyone seems to have seen his work. I, too, used to spend time imitating Charlie Chaplin in the past. Among the anecdotes of Charlie Chaplin, who performed comedy so amusingly with his waddling gait, there is a story like this. One day, Charlie Chaplin was walking alone and happened to visit a rural British village, where he saw a contest being held in the marketplace. The contest was none other than a “Charlie Chaplin Look-Alike Contest.” Feeling mischievous, Charlie Chaplin participated in the competition without revealing his identity. What do you think the result was? He won third place. Amazingly, there were two other people who were even more like Charlie Chaplin than Charlie Chaplin himself. Perhaps this world is very similar to that contest. We are living in a world where the fake prevails as if it were the real thing, and I suspect such things happen frequently in every sector and sphere of society.
Today’s text is the word of Jesus, where He teaches us about what true faith really is. Jesus tells us today that our external confession of faith is not what constitutes true faith; rather, true faith is not about visible, external expressions, but about hearing the Lord’s word and obeying it—the one who acts according to that word is the one who possesses true faith. Lest we misunderstand as we look at this word, we cannot say that we are saved by our actions. What does the teaching of the entire Bible state? It teaches us that we as human beings cannot be saved through our deeds. No matter how much we strive and try our best, and no matter how righteously we attempt to live, we fall infinitely short when measured against God’s standard. There is no one who is perfect.
Therefore, a lesson taught throughout the Bible is that not a single person among us can boldly step before God and claim to be a perfect person. Then how are we saved—how is it that we attain salvation? We are saved by the grace of God. Because we are imperfect and so deeply lacking, we cannot dare to approach God on our own, but God extended His hand to us. He took pity on us and delivered us. The truth of salvation taught throughout the Bible is that we receive salvation because of the grace of Jesus Christ, who died on the cross to pay the price for all the sins we committed in our stead and made us alive, and we make that salvation our own by believing in the Lord’s grace.
However, the word Jesus speaks today is not a question about what saves us, but rather, Jesus is providing an answer to the question of what true faith is. What is true faith? I pray in the name of the Lord that we may clearly remember today the fact that true faith is not what appears merely on the outside, but it belongs to the person who hears God’s word, accepts it as their own, faithfully obeys it, and strives to live according to that word. Now, on June 3rd, the local elections will take place. You already voted this past Friday and Saturday, didn’t you? Have you already voted? I noticed that the voter turnout was exceptionally high. At any rate, there are local elections, and whenever there is a local election or a nationwide election, countless politicians step forward and speak. “I will volunteer for you. I will serve this country.”
When you hear them talk, every single one of them sounds like a patriot. Every single one of them sounds like an excellent leader. In the past, while riding in a taxi, I heard the taxi driver say something in a joking tone; he said he wished every single candidate running this time would be elected. He wished people could vote for all of them, not just one. Why? Because listening to what they say, everything sounds wonderful. So he joked that he wished everyone could be voted in and every candidate could win, but in truth, a very important bone of truth was hidden behind that joke. It was likely a self-deprecating voice asking, “They speak that way, but who among them will truly act accordingly?”
There are people who talk about liberal democracy with their mouths but actually behave like dictators, and there are those who claim to be for the people with their words but in truth care only for a small group of the privileged class. Because their words and actions differ, what kind of policies they actually implement and what laws they actually create are far more important, and we must judge a person based on that. Similarly, what is faith, and what is true faith? Many people say they believe in the Lord and claim to be God’s people, but what is true faith? Jesus teaches us that faith is not simply expressing faith externally—that is not true faith—but true faith is obeying and following according to the word of God. I pray in the name of the Lord that we may remember and meditate on this word at this hour.
If there is something we can reflect upon within this text today, I would like us to think about what cannot be called true faith. We are easily deceived into thinking that these things constitute true faith, but what is it that is not true faith? It is that having passion does not prove true faith. Of course, if one possesses true faith, it is only natural that passion follows, but the point is that passion alone cannot tell us whether that faith is the real thing. In Genesis—excuse me, in Matthew 7:21, Jesus spoke: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” What does this mean? What is real faith? Real faith is not about showing an intense faith by crying out “Lord, Lord” on the outside; rather, He is stating that true faith is doing the will of God.
We often get confused. We frequently fall into the illusion that if we simply confess that we believe in Jesus, we obtain salvation, and that making such a confession is what real faith is. But is that truly the case? If someone confesses that they believe in Jesus, does that mean they are saved? How is it? In the Bible, there are verses that express it that way. Which verses are they? In Romans 10:12–13, it says: “For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” Since Romans 10:13 states that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved, it is easy to mistakenly assume that merely calling upon Jesus or saying that you believe in Jesus is true faith and a saving faith. But is that really so?
No, it is not. What Romans 10:13 is saying is not that anyone who simply calls out will be saved regardless of their heart, but rather that anyone—whether Jew or Greek—who possesses true faith will be saved; it means a person is not discriminated against based on their race. It means salvation is not reserved only for Jews, nor only for the wealthy, nor only for adults; even Gentiles who are not Jews, even women who are not men, even the poor who have no money, and even the uneducated who lack knowledge—anyone who believes in and accepts Jesus receives salvation. In that sense, it says everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved, but simply calling out with the lips itself does not guarantee salvation.
We must remember today that within the words Jesus speaks, a person does not receive salvation just because they cry out “Lord, Lord,” but the one who acts according to that word of God obtains salvation. We often think that if there is passion, it is easy to assume that a person possesses real faith. The reason we make such a mistake is that if faith is present, passion is bound to follow. Just as an attitude of love naturally manifests when one falls in love, because passion inevitably accompanies real faith, it is easy to look at passion and assume faith is present. However, just because passion exists does not mean everyone possesses real faith. When we evaluate others, we tend to judge their faith based on how fiery they are, how diligently they evangelize, how hard they work for the church, and how passionately they lead their religious life.
However, Jesus states that crying out “Lord, Lord” is not real faith. Who else possessed passion? The Pharisees had it too. The Pharisees were passionate about praying, passionate about fasting, and passionate about giving alms. Yet Jesus looked at them and rebuked them, saying, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!” This was because although they had passion, a heart that truly loved God was absent from their souls, and an attitude of obeying God’s word could not be found. If we measure by passion, Paul’s state before his conversion was that of a passionate man. If we measure by passion, people like Ananias and Sapphira were also passionate. However, showing passion is not the ultimate answer; rather, before displaying external passion, there must be a decision of faith in the heart to obey according to the Lord’s will.
Second, if there is another thing we must not mistake, it is that the act of proclaiming cannot serve as definitive proof of faith. Matthew 7:22 records: “On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name,’” What does it mean to have prophesied? It means they proclaimed the word of God. In today’s terms, it means they acted as pastors. In today’s terms, it means they preached the gospel. However, He states that having done such things does not mean one possesses true faith, and if we apply this more broadly, speaking right words does not mean a person is righteous. Many people claim righteousness and cry out for justice, but shouting for justice does not mean that the person is just. Why is that?
A man named Max Lucado once said, “The moment we speak about another person’s weakness, we no longer need to think about our own weakness.” Why do people shout for justice? Because shouting for justice deludes them into thinking they have become just, allowing them to conceal their own uncleanness. The same is true today. Our preaching of the gospel or our act of evangelism does not demonstrate that we possess true faith, because anyone can speak words. Who spoke beautiful words? Someone like Judas Iscariot did. When a woman broke an alabaster flask of ointment and poured it over Jesus, Judas Iscariot spoke remarkable words. “Why was this ointment wasted? Could this ointment not have been sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” What a splendid thing to say. What a moving statement. We shouldn’t waste things; we should help the poor.
Those words saying that helping the poor and giving alms is good… it is perhaps the most moving statement, yet the Bible speaks clearly. What does it say? “He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it.” This is how it is expressed. Today, countless people shout for justice, talk about the gospel, and speak of missions, but we must clearly remember the fact that whether they possess true faith and a right faith behind those words is an entirely separate matter. We must all become those who daily examine ourselves to see if we are trying to hide within the splendor of such proclamations to conceal our own uncleanness. Furthermore, the manifestation of miracles and the possession of a testimony are not evidence that a person holds true faith. Looking again at the latter half of Matthew 7:22, it is expressed this way:
“and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’” Many people appear before the Lord and speak. “Lord, I performed mighty works in Your name. Miracles took place.” When miracles occur, tongues manifest, various wondrous and mysterious things happen, and people have experiences in prayer—experiences of answered prayers—it is easy to think that such things constitute true faith. That is why when looking at some people, they say, “Pastor, I want to speak in tongues too.” They easily assume that if they can just do that, they will possess true faith. But that is not it; the Lord is stating that even if one casts out demons, it can still be a fake faith, and even if there are certain testimonies of answered prayers, it can still be a fake faith. In Deuteronomy 13:1–3, the Lord warned:
“If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder that he tells you comes to pass, and if he says, ‘Let us go after other gods,’ which you have not known, ‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. For the LORD your God is testing you, to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” When people try to delude us by pointing to miracles and speaking of works—when fake prophets, fake pastors, and fake spiritual leaders appear and perform such deeds—we must not be deceived by them. What is true faith? We must verify whether a person is faithfully following the word of God, rather than looking at their words or miracles. In the 1740s, there was a pastor named Jonathan Edwards who ministered in the Northampton area of New England in America. He is a highly famous pastor who sparked the Great Awakening in America.
His influence remains immense even today, and many pastors continue to be deeply influenced by his writings. A sermon he preached at that time, which was compiled and published as a book, has been translated into our language. That book is titled The Treatise on Religious Affections. It is an incredibly famous book, an essential text written about what true faith consists of. While I would love to introduce it to you, to speak frankly, it is not entertaining at all. Nowadays, books need short sentences, simple concepts, and illustrations to be easily read, but trying to read this thick volume is so complex that even theologians and ministers find it exceptionally difficult to read.
However, if you look at the content of that book, it discusses what constitutes the evidence of our true faith and the evidence that we are saved, stating that we must not misunderstand across intellectual, emotional, and volitional dimensions. First, on the intellectual side, merely having an assurance that I am saved or knowing that others say “You are saved” cannot serve as evidence of salvation. On the emotional side, experiencing an overwhelming surge of uncontrollable feelings—even if those feelings arose naturally rather than being manufactured, and even if they occur consecutively—cannot serve as evidence that I am saved.
On the volitional side, showing a volitional attitude of exerting passion in religious matters, expressing love, and performing many religious deeds cannot prove that the person possesses true faith and is a saved individual. He is stating the exact opposite of what we typically assume. Then, he explained what the evidence of true salvation and true faith is: he states that a transformation of the heart brought about by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is the true evidence of salvation and faith. Attaining true knowledge about God, holding a deep assurance of salvation, harboring a love for God and a longing for His holiness within the heart, and more concretely, a transformation of character must take place.
An internal life transformation—becoming more humble, striving to resemble Christ more closely, maintaining spiritual balance, enduring with patience and gratitude, and harboring a desire to obey God’s word—is what ultimately serves as the evidence demonstrating true faith and showing that one is saved. Whose words does this explanation by Pastor Jonathan Edwards match exactly? It is actually identical to the words of Jesus. I pray in the name of the Lord that throughout this coming week, we may constantly engrave and meditate in our hearts on the Lord’s word spoken in Matthew 7:21: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”
Jesus illustrates the difference in faith by comparing it to the difference between a house built on a rock and a house built on sand. Building a house on a rock—it’s hard to understand, right? Is there really anyone who builds a house on sand? It might be hard to comprehend, but in modern terms, when building a house, if you lay a very solid foundation and erect the house upon that solid foundation, it is safe. Instead of just building a house right on top of the ground, you must dig deep down to the solid bedrock, pour concrete over it, and build the house there so that it stands firm and remains unshakable under any circumstances. However, if you fail to do so and erect a house upon weak ground—ground that can be washed away when it rains—then when a flood occurs or an earthquake hits, it has no choice but to collapse entirely.
In the Jewish society of that time, in that Middle Eastern region, there were times when rain would suddenly fall and water would suddenly flow through the wadis. If someone built a house inside such a wadi, it seemed perfectly fine when it wasn’t raining. Normally, this house and that house looked exactly the same, but when a massive downpour hit, the house built inside the wadi—built where intermittent water flows—would collapse completely. Similarly, instead of building our faith upon our external appearance and remaining satisfied with that, we must all become those who build our faith upon the solid rock of faith through deeper meditation on the Lord and obedience to God’s word. Why must we do so? Because God truly loved us. He didn’t just stop at saying “I love you,” but He truly loved us, delivering His only Son for us and causing Him to bear all our sins. Having received such wondrous love from God, I pray in the name of the Lord that we may all be established upon the rock of true faith through that faith that obeys according to the Lord’s will.
