Wisdom on Guaranteeing Debts and God’s Ultimate Pledge
Today, as we meditate together on the word in Proverbs concerning guaranteeing debts, I would like to share God’s grace with you. Looking again at the word in Proverbs 20:16 that we read today, it is recorded like this:
“Take a man’s garment when he has put up security for a stranger, and hold it in pledge when he puts up security for foreigners.”
This word in Proverbs 20:16 is recorded identically in Proverbs 27:13. It is recorded twice in Proverbs in today’s passage. Besides this, Proverbs warns us several times throughout about how dangerous it is to stand as a guarantor for others in our lives.
In particular, there is a similar word in Proverbs 6:1-2:
“My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, have given your pledge for a stranger, if you are snared in the words of your mouth, caught in the words of your mouth…”
Standing as a guarantor is not simply a matter of signing or not signing a document; it is the same as being captured yourself. It explains that it is just like being bound, arrested, and dragged away.
It is also recorded in the word of Proverbs 11:15:
“Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer harm, but he who hates striking hands in pledge is secure.”
If you had not stood as a guarantor, you could live a peaceful life, but standing as a guarantor for someone and consequently suffering loss is what this word warns us about.
So, is guaranteeing a debt a wise thing to do, or a foolish thing to do? It can be said to be a foolish thing. In Proverbs 17:18, the word says:
“One who lacks sense gives a pledge and puts up security in the presence of his neighbor.”
What kind of person is someone who stands as a guarantor? Not a wise person, but a foolish person. Because you end up taking on that immense danger and the potential catastrophe that the guarantee will bring, it is like going into a fiery pit. It is like jumping into the water. In this way, it emphasizes how dangerous, frightening, and unwise it is to stand as a guarantor for others.
Furthermore, in the word of Proverbs 22:26-27:
“Be not one of those who give pledges, who put up security for debts. If you have nothing with which to pay, why should your bed be taken from under you?”
So if you stand as a guarantor, it is not just a matter of seeing a little financial loss; even the bed—the very last stronghold of our lives, the place where we sleep—can be taken away, and our lives can be completely ruined. This is what the Bible records as such a dangerous thing. Should we stand as a guarantor or not?
If there is someone who has already stood as a guarantor, what should they do? In the word of Proverbs 6:5, it expresses it like this:
“Save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the hand of the fowler.”
You must quickly escape from that situation to survive. If you do not escape, just as a gazelle is caught and killed by a hunter, and just as a bird is caught and killed by a fowler, you too can die. So the word of Proverbs warns how dangerous guaranteeing a debt is, advises us not to stand as a guarantor, and counsels that if you have already done so, you must do your best to get out of that situation. Therefore, the lesson we can learn today through the word of Proverbs is that we should not stand as a guarantor in our lives.
However, if there is something we must remember, this word in Proverbs is a word of wisdom rather than a commandment. When we look at the Bible, we need to distinguish between commandments and wisdom. What is a commandment? We call that which we must unconditionally keep a commandment. For example, what kinds of commandments are there? “Serve the Lord your God alone”—is it a commandment or not? It is a commandment. “Do not steal”—is it a commandment or not? It is a commandment. We can understand such commandments as the clear will of God that we must legally and unconditionally follow.
However, the words appearing in Proverbs, although they are God’s word, should be understood as words of wisdom and counsel rather than commandments. What does it mean for a word to be wisdom and counsel? Although it counsels us for our own good because it is wise, failing to follow that counsel does not mean you are disobeying God’s will. So when a situation arises in our lives where we have to stand as a guarantor, should we or should we not?
When a situation arises where a guarantee is necessary, if someone says, “Because God’s word told me not to stand as a guarantor, I cannot do it,” but a guarantee is needed… Then if your son needs it, should you say, “Son, as a believer in God, I cannot stand as a guarantor for you”? No. Although guaranteeing a debt is dangerous, could take your life, and carries the risk of completely shaking your existence, nevertheless, there are times when you must stand as a guarantor for your beloved children. There are also cases where you have to stand as a guarantor for your beloved parents. This is because it is a word of wisdom, not a commandment of God that must be strictly followed.
In the past, there were really many instances of standing as a guarantor. To go on a trip abroad, could you just go? Is traveling abroad easy or difficult these days? It’s easy. Looking at our church members, if they aren’t around, they went to China; if they aren’t around, they went to Vietnam; if they aren’t around, they went to France—they travel so well. But how was it in the past? If you wanted to travel abroad once, you couldn’t just leave. To go abroad, you had to receive security education—do you remember? Not only that, you had to submit personal references. Several people had to attach personal references stating that they would take responsibility for that person’s identity if they didn’t return after going abroad, and only then would the overseas travel permit come out. So when such guarantees were needed to travel abroad, in those cases, should you provide the guarantee or not?
One somewhat sad story: before I got married to my wife, we went on a quiz show—I’m not sure if it was MBC or SBS, I don’t remember exactly where. We went on a quiz show, and what kind of quiz show was it? It was a quiz show that sent you on an overseas trip. The targets were prospective married couples, and if you won the quiz, it was a program that sent you abroad. I don’t remember very well who the host was, but my wife and I went to the broadcasting station before getting married to appear on it. When we got there, hundreds of people were gathered in an auditorium even bigger than our church, and we took the first round test there. A general knowledge test—we took a whole general knowledge test, and out of those, they picked about a dozen people. Were we picked or not? We were picked. And they didn’t stop there; they did a microphone test. So we went up front and spoke into the microphone, and did we pass or fail that microphone test? We passed.
So during the quiz show, quiz questions kept coming up, but answering wasn’t about just knowing the answer; you needed the quick reflexes to press the button first. My reflexes were slow, so I couldn’t press it. But even so, did I win or lose? I won, believe it or not. So by winning, I proudly received a Taiwan travel voucher, a honeymoon travel voucher. But I couldn’t go on the overseas trip. Because I had not yet completed my military service, traveling abroad was difficult at that time. Anyway, personal guarantees and all the procedures were complicated, so despite receiving it, I couldn’t travel abroad and had no choice but to go to Jeju Island for a trip. In those days, there were only three or four television networks, so when we went to Jeju Island, students on a school trip there saw us and said, “Wow, it’s the people from TV!” and recognized us wherever we went. I had such an experience, but the point is there are times when you have to stand as a guarantor.
When a church needs to build and lacks money, there are cases where it borrows money from a bank. At that time, will the bank just lend the money? Or will they tell you to stand as a guarantor? They tell you to stand as a guarantor. If a guarantee is needed, who among our church members would usually stand as a guarantor? The elders do it. Then an elder—this is not about our church; our church gets loans just fine and all, but this was something that happened in the past—an elder said something like this: “Because it says in the Bible not to stand as a guarantor, I cannot participate in the guarantee.”
Being unable to stand as a guarantor is an individual’s freedom, and no matter how good and right a deed it is to stand as a guarantor, one does not necessarily have to do it just because they are a leader. Therefore, when a situation arises where an elder in leadership needs to stand as a guarantor for the church, if he steps back saying, “I cannot stand as a guarantor,” we cannot hate that elder or say he is unqualified. Church work is never something to be forced into because of a position; it is done when done voluntarily. Saying, “You are a pastor, you are an elder, you are a deaconess, and you can’t even do this?” makes no sense. It should always be done with a willing heart if one can, and if someone does not yet have a willing heart and says, “I cannot participate yet,” we should acknowledge their inability, assuming, ‘They must have a reason, some unavoidable, unspoken personal circumstances,’ and accept it.
Therefore, participating not in a guarantee does not become a big problem. But what is somewhat questionable is using the Bible as an excuse to say you cannot do it—that makes no sense. This word in Proverbs is not a commandment, but a word of wisdom. A word of wisdom means, ‘Since there is such danger, know the danger and decide whether to stand as a guarantor or not.’ It does not mean you must absolutely not do it. Therefore, deciding based on other motives while invoking the Bible to say, “Because it says in the Bible not to stand as a guarantor, I cannot do it,” is an awkward thing to do. In any case, the teaching of the entire Bible continuously warns that standing as a guarantor is a dangerous thing. Every time this passage came up, I repeated it several times, and today I came to speak on it once more.
However, today’s reading in Proverbs 20 speaks from a somewhat different dimension than the story so far about how dangerous guarantees are. Shall we look together again at the word of Proverbs 20:16? “Take a man’s garment when he has put up security for a stranger, and hold it in pledge when he puts up security for foreigners.” So while other verses related to guarantees in Proverbs talk about how dangerous guarantees are, today’s passage can be seen as talking not from the perspective of the person standing as a guarantor, but about what I, standing before the person making the guarantee, should do. If someone says they will stand as a guarantor for another person, then what should be done? Today’s text teaches us, “Then take that person’s garment as collateral”—this is what the first line is saying. The meaning of the second line is the same.
Because the translation of the second line’s meaning is a bit ambiguous, it is difficult to know exactly what the second line means, but if you know that the first and second lines always repeat the same content in different ways as we have examined Proverbs so far, you will realize that the second line speaks of a very similar meaning to the first line. Furthermore, in the original Hebrew text, the second line says “hold it in pledge,” but the word “body” is not in the original Hebrew text. The translator paraphrased it as “hold his body in pledge,” but what the second line means is to take collateral from that person—that is the meaning of the second line.
At any rate, what is the meaning of the word in Proverbs 20:16 read today? If I am not in the position of standing as a guarantor, but in a situation where I am lending money or need someone’s guarantee, and there is someone who says they will stand as a guarantor, what should I do? Then today’s passage teaches you to take their garment as collateral or take whatever collateral you can from that person. Thus, it is a passage with a slightly different perspective. Why did it say to take a garment as collateral? If you lend money and need to take collateral, “Take a man’s garment when he has put up security for a stranger”—what is the meaning behind telling us to take a garment?
So does it mean that as the collateral we accept for a guarantee, taking a garment is enough, and we shouldn’t take money, land deeds, children, or cars as collateral? Does it mean we must only take garments as collateral? That is not so. The “garment” mentioned here points to one representative item. At that time, clothing was truly precious. Are clothes important today, or not so important? Because they are so abundant today, clothes are not very important, but how did the Israelites live at that time? They wore clothes during the day and covered themselves with those clothes at night to sleep. So this garment served as both a blanket and clothing, making it the most fundamental item for a person’s living.
Therefore, saying to take a garment as collateral representative of taking something precious as collateral; it does not mean taking only garments and nothing else. Looking at the word in Exodus 22:26-27, when talking about the issue of taking collateral from the poor at that time, it says:
“If ever you take your neighbor’s cloak in pledge, you shall return it to him before the sun goes down, for that is his only covering, and it is his cloak for his body; in what else shall he sleep? And if he cries to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.”
If a poor person has nothing left but a garment and even that was taken as collateral, it must be returned before sunset so that they can cover themselves and sleep—that is the meaning of this word.
So what does this word mean? It refers to taking collateral like that. Ultimately, what today’s word in Proverbs teaches us is: if we lend money, or if we are in a situation where we must receive a guarantee from someone, what should we do? As a word of wisdom today, Proverbs teaches us, “Secure collateral, establish a mortgage.” Honestly, hearing this kind of message in the Bible is a bit surprising. Because what we expect from the Bible is the word “You received without paying; give without pay,” and God’s word telling us that if someone slaps your right cheek, turn the left to them as well. Rather than such truly loving, merciful, compassionate, and graceful words, this sounds somewhat cold and detached, so finding such a word included in the Bible might feel a bit perplexing.
However, this too is strictly a word of wisdom, and there are plenty of lessons for us to gain through this word. In fact, Proverbs is a word that offers lessons on how we can live our lives wisely, comfortably, and steadfastly. Regarding what we should do in the numerous areas of our lives, the word of Proverbs speaks in various ways. For example, toward people who farm, what would Proverbs teach? “If you farm, farm well. Give plenty of water, let it catch plenty of sunlight, and diligently go out early in the morning before sunset to do your best in farming”—this is the lesson Proverbs offers. If speaking about farming, it speaks like that.
But what if, in our lives, we lend our assets to others? Proverbs also speaks about how we should act in issues related to financial transactions with other people. Just lending money isn’t inherently bad; it’s a normal thing. If we engage in financial transactions, it is something we must consider. Because there are so many cases of ruin caused by doing things without a guarantee. How prevalent are “no-show” scams these days? One day a call comes to a restaurant. The call says, “We are coming for a company dinner on such-and-such date. 50 people from our company will go. 100 people will go. So prepare everything.” So the owner hires part-time workers, uses people, and prepares a lot of inventory and ingredients, thinking they will make a lot of money after that day passes. They prepare a mountain of food and wait, but do they show up or not? They don’t show up. Hearing the sad stories of restaurant owners who are so distressed, wondering what to do with all the food that cannot be kept long and must be thrown away—we often hear such heartbreaking accounts.
But the word of Proverbs tells us: don’t just listen to their words; at least take a deposit. Tell them to put down a reservation fee. That is not a bad thing. It’s not wicked; it’s just proper. Instead of unconditionally trusting people and getting betrayed, it tells us that this is a safeguard we naturally ought to establish.
If we lend money to someone, instead of just lending it, we should establish a mortgage, set up a pledge, or write a promissory note—taking measures through such means so that financial obligations can be faithfully repaid. Setting up safety measures is only natural, and it cannot be called wicked. In truth, what kind of people are we? We are people who are not generous with money. If someone cheats us out of 1,000,000 KRW, is there anyone who would comfortably sleep, thinking, “Ah, well, 1,000,000 KRW doesn’t matter, it’s fine”? No. Wouldn’t we be upset and unable to sleep because of it? Why? Because our hearts are not generous. Yet lending money without any collateral or guarantee, only to get betrayed by someone we trusted, is actually a foolish thing—this is what it teaches us. How often do such incidents repeat within the church?
Building trust first, then borrowing money, and one day running away or disappearing—such incidents happen a lot in churches. There are people who enter the church with that purpose, and even if they didn’t enter with that motive, when faced with a truly dangerous situation, the thought of committing such an act and running away can cross our minds. Therefore, if we are not always careful, we end up losing people, losing money, and falling into trial. But the Bible simply says: take collateral. Don’t just lend money, get cheated, and feel upset. Just as we must farm properly, take proper measures in financial relationships—this is what it counsels us.
A guarantee is very dangerous. You could lose the garments essential for living, and if your body is held in pledge, your life could be ruined. Nevertheless, there are times when we must stand as a guarantor. Why? Because we love.
And right then, our God stood as a guarantor for us.
When we were bound for eternal destruction due to sin, God said, “I will guarantee you.” Long ago, Abraham asks God: “How can I know God’s grace? How can I be sure of God’s love? How can I believe God’s promise?” At that time, God told Abraham to take animals, cut them in two, and lay the halves opposite each other. And that night, God showed Abraham a vision: a smoking firepot and a flaming torch passing between those divided pieces of meat. In ancient times, when making a covenant with each other, they would cut animals to say, “If I break the covenant, let my life be killed like this animal. I pledge my life to keep this promise,” and as a sign that the guarantee was certain, they split the animals. What is amazing is that God promised us with His own life, meaning, “I will surely save you, surely deliver you, and surely fulfill God’s promise.”
And according to that promise, our Lord gave up His life on the cross. We have received God’s amazing love; in our lives, may we always be grateful, always remember God’s grace, and live a life of faith, walking in obedience to the Lord’s will. I pray this in the name of the Lord.
