Put On the New Self: Leaving the Old Life Behind
It has been a while since we last looked into the Book of Ephesians together. In today’s passage, Ephesians 4:22–24 expresses it like this:
“to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”
It urges us: What are we to put off? Put off the old self. What are we to put on? Put on the new self. It exhorts us to strip away the old self currently wrapped around us and clothe ourselves with a new person. When we wear clothes, we take off old garments and put on new ones, don’t we?
If you picture that image, I believe you can understand the meaning of this scripture to some extent. In a spiritual sense, today’s text exhorts us to cast off the old self that currently overlays us and be clothed as a new person. Here, a question arises for us: What on earth is the “old self”? And what does the “new self” mean? Other things are easy for us to understand. Old clothes are worn-out, outdated, and unwearable—we fully understand old clothes and new clothes. But when it comes to people, what is an “old self,” and what is a “new self”? I think these are concepts that do not come easily to us. Therefore, we need an answer to what the old self is and what the new self is.
Another question that comes to mind is: How can we take it off and put it on? Putting on clothes or putting on shoes—we can just do that with our hands. But how do we put off the old self? How can we grasp the old self and strip it away? How can we put on the new self? Because it is not easy to understand this word right away, an answer is needed regarding how to put off the old self and put on the new self.
First, we should look at what the old self is and what the new self is. What is the old self? Verse 22 of today’s scripture expresses it like this: “according to deceitful desires.” Here, “deceitful desires” means something that lures us not merely with simple temptation, but through deception. It is not real, right?
It is fake. It makes promises but can give nothing in return. Following corrupt habits according to such deceitful desires and cravings is what describes the old self. To explain this simply, a person who does what does not please God is the old self. God has things that please Him, but the old self does the exact opposite. It follows along as Satan tempts. We thought this was natural, we mistook it as legitimate, but in fact, if we reflect quietly, Satan stirs up our hearts to make us stumble and bring us to ruin. The person led away by that temptation is precisely the old self.
On the contrary, when we say “new self,” what kind of person does that refer to? Again, looking at verses 23 and 24 today, it says:
“and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”
So, what kind of person is the new self? It is a person clothed in holiness, a person living a life that God desires and delights in. So, to draw a simple conclusion: rather than living a life doing what God dislikes and disapproves of, and rather than living according to the ways Satan tempts and tries to trip us up, the new self is a person who thinks about what pleases God, considers what God wants, and lives accordingly.
Now, who is this exhortation addressed to? Is it directed toward people outside the church who do not know God or Jesus? Or is it given to people of faith inside the church—those who confess Jesus as their Lord and God and confess that they have become children of God? Which is it? It is the latter. In other words, we can see that this exhortation is addressed to us.
In Ephesians 4:20–21, it says:
“But that is not the way you learned Christ!—assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,”
So when it exhorts us to put off the old self and put on the new self, it is not telling unbelievers outside the church who commit evil that they must put on the new self—not that there is no need to exhort them, but the message being delivered in Ephesians is directed toward those who have already accepted Jesus and confess that they are children of God. It gives this word of exhortation to believers inside the church who confess, “I am now a child of God, a believer in Jesus.”
Why is such an exhortation given to believers? It is because every single one of us, without exception, is not perfect.
Because there is no one among us living completely according to God’s will, this word of exhortation is given to us. We are still accustomed to old habits. We read and hear God’s word, and thus we always reflect on ourselves. Yet, even in the moment of worship, there are times when we think and act according to the corrupt habits and temptations of this world rather than what pleases God. There are far too many instances in our lives where we act with complete disregard for God’s word, as if we had never read it.
Why do we still look no different from the people of the world? It is because human nature itself is beyond self-rescue. No matter how much we train and discipline ourselves, we cannot become perfect.
No matter how much we seek self-improvement, do our best, or try our hardest, if we let our guard down even a little, we stumble. If we lose focus for just a moment, we inevitably display attitudes directly opposed to God’s will. That is precisely our weakness.
That is exactly why Jesus had to come into this world. If there were anyone among us who could become perfect on their own, the Lord would not have needed to come down to this world and bear the cross for us. But because no one in this world can be perfect, Jesus came into this world to save us by bearing our sins and shedding all His blood upon the cross. Although we believe in Jesus and have become children of God, we cannot help but admit that in every moment of our lives, the old self following former habits bound to surface.
Then what should we do?
Since that is our original condition, should we just give up, saying, “That’s just how human nature is”? Should we make excuses and live like this, saying, “Leave me alone. This is just how I was made, so I have no choice”? Absolutely not. We must have a holy longing. That is why the word of scripture continuously echoes toward us today: put off the old self that follows former habits and put on the new self. Do not live like that; put on the new self. Moment by moment, He speaks this to us again and again.
Therefore, there must be a longing in our hearts. Just as the Apostle Paul cried out in Romans 7:24:
“Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?”
When he looked at himself, in his heart there was a desire to obey according to God’s law. In his mind, he wanted to follow God’s law. Yet in reality, the actions manifesting in his life were somehow following the law of the flesh. Seeing his own state time after time brought him deep grief, which is expressed in that cry.
Today, our confession must be like this. Every morning, every single moment, when old habits suddenly surface and we fail or make mistakes again, we must not give up saying, “I can’t help it. This is just my temperament.” Instead, we must stand again before God and before the cross of Jesus Christ, confessing, “Lord, help me.”
Why must we put off the old self? The reason is simple. Ephesians 4:17–18 expresses it like this:
“Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.”
A life lived according to former habits is not a fine life; it is described as being alienated from the life of God. If we live according to the ways of the old self, it is not “just fine”—it means death. It means being spiritually separated from the life of God. If we depart from the word of God, it is not safe or okay; it inevitably leads to spiritual death.
So here, we need to ask one more question: What if someone says, “Well, I accepted Jesus,” yet they cannot strip away the old self, and the image of the old self continuously comes out of them? Can that person receive salvation or not? What is the answer? Suppose someone accepted Jesus. They confessed Jesus as their Lord and God, professed belief in Him, and received Him. Yet in their life, the old self—a lifestyle displeasing to God—repeats endlessly, and such evil behavior continually manifests. Can we say that person will be saved, or that they will not be saved? Is it option 1 or option 2? Will they receive it or not?
We don’t know; we simply don’t know. Because salvation belongs entirely to God, we cannot rashly judge who has received salvation and who has not, making it difficult to give a definitive answer. However, both answers seem possible. First, it is possible to answer that they can be saved because they accepted Jesus. We are not saved by our own righteousness. No matter how many flaws or how great a sin one has, we can answer that we are saved because of the grace of Jesus, who bore all those sins Himself and died on the cross for us.
On the other hand, what if no evidence whatsoever of a saved person appears in their life? For example, suppose a person is brought into the emergency room. They are brought in, but no pulse can be felt.
No pulse indicating that the person is alive can be detected. Is it possible to diagnose that person as alive when zero evidence of life is visible? The Bible tells us that such faith is dead or fake. Jesus did not say, “If you just say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ then that’s enough. You said ‘Lord, Lord,’ so you’re fine.” Rather, Jesus told us that not everyone who says to Him, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven. “You believe that God is one; even the demons believe that.” Because it speaks like this, if the characteristics of being a child of God do not appear at all, we cannot help but be deeply suspicious as to whether that person is truly saved.
In this world, there are many who claim to be Christians while actually living in direct opposition to the Lord’s will. They call themselves Christians and claim to strive for Christianity, but in reality, their actions run completely counter to what Jesus taught. Jesus told us to love our neighbors and even love our enemies, yet many who call themselves Christians drive their neighbors out, kick them aside, and treat them maliciously. The Lord told us to welcome strangers, embrace them, and help them, yet many Christians show hostility and malice toward foreigners. The Lord told us to feed the hungry and help those in distress, yet today there are many nominal Christians who exploit countless people to protect what is theirs and close their hearts.
Jesus told us to forgive seventy-seven times, yet many claim to be Christians while failing to forgive even a single offense, shutting their hearts close.
Our lives today are the very same. When the old self appears in our lives today, we must not feel comfortable with it, thinking, “This is fine, it’s just how I’ve always been.” If Jesus Christ now dwells in our hearts, hatred for what the Lord hates must spring up within us. Rather than feeling comfortable and accustomed to the old ways, there must be a holy longing in our daily lives to feel more at home as a new person.
Therefore, we must bow down in prayer: “Lord, help me.” For by our own power and strength, it is difficult to live according to the Lord’s heart. The path of Jesus—the path of the new self—does not align with our natural inclinations, so it often feels awkward, uncomfortable, and unfamiliar. That is why we must bow down and pray again today:
“Lord, remove the old self within me that follows former habits. Since we cannot remove it by our own strength and ability, Lord, remove it Yourself and clothe us anew with You. Cause us to resemble the Lord more closely and live a life that pleases You.”
May we all be those who experience the warm hand of God as we bow down before Him.
