이스라엘 민족은 하나님을 버리고 바알 신을 섬기는 선택을 했습니다. 왜 이스라엘 민족이 바알 신을 섬기는 선택을 하게 되었을까요? 왜 바알 신 앞에 이스라엘 백성들이 엎드렸을까요? 그것은 바알 신이 우리들에게 풍요를 가져다줄 것이라고 약속했기 때문에 그렇습니다.
물론 바알 신이 직접 약속한 건 아니겠죠. 바알 신은 눈이 있어도 보지 못하고 귀가 있어도 듣지 못하고 입이 있어도 말하지 못하는 사람이 만든 수공물에 불과하기 때문에 바알 신이 직접 약속한 것은 아닐 겁니다. 그런데 그런 약속을 믿게 만든 것은 누구일까요? 바알 신의 대변자들이 그렇게 믿도록 만들었습니다. 아합 왕이 이스라엘 백성들에게 그렇게 이야기를 한 것이고요. 또한 바알 선지자들이 그렇게 선전해서 바알 신을 섬기는 일에 온 이스라엘 민족들이 바알 신 앞으로 가게 되었던 것일 겁니다.
그런데 정말 바알 신이 약속했던 그 풍요를 가져다주었을까요? 안 주었을까요? 풍요를 가져다주는 것 같았어요. 바알 신이 우리에게 풍요를 가져다주는구나라고 느끼게 해주는 것 같았어요. 바알 신에게 제물을 바치고 바알 신에게 예배를 드리니까 정말 그해에 풍년이 드는 것 같은 경험을 했었을 것 같습니다. 풍년이 드는데, 그 풍년이 드는 것을 보면서 “하나님께서 우리에게 주셨구나”라고 생각하는 것이 아니라 “우리가 바알 신을 섬겼더니 바알 신이 우리에게 이런 풍요를 주는 것이구나”라고 생각하는 것이죠. 그래서 “아, 정말이구나! 바알 신을 섬겼더니 우리가 풍로워졌구나”라고 하는 것을 확신하게 된 것이죠.
아마 간증자들이 많이 나왔을 겁니다. “우리가 바알 신을 어떻게 섬겼는가? 정말 성심성의껏 치성을 다해서 바알 신을 섬겼더니 우리가 축복을 받았다”라고 하는 그런 축복의 간증자들이 여기저기서 간증하는 소리들을 듣게 되었을 겁니다. 그리고 한 번 사람이 그것을 믿기 시작하면 그 생각을 바꾸기가 어렵게 되는 것이죠.
결국 북이스라엘의 모든 사람들이 바알 신을 섬기고 바알 신 앞에 엎드리는 배도의 길로 나아가게 되는 결과를 가져오게 되었습니다. 그런데 바알 신을 섬긴다고 해서 항상 풍요로웠을까요? 아니죠. 어떤 때는 풍요가 주어진 것이 아니라 흉년이 들었을 때도 있었을 겁니다. 흉년이 들었을 때 이스라엘 민족은 어떻게 생각했을까요? “아, 바알 신이 순 가짜구나”라고 생각을 했을까요? 바알 신이 가짜라고 생각한 것이 아니라 “우리의 지성이 부족했구나, 우리가 정성을 다하지 못했구나, 바알 신을 우리가 화나게 만든 것이 무엇이었을까?” 하면서 더 바알 신 앞에 엎드리게 되는 그런 확증 편향의 악순환의 고리가 이어지게 된 것이죠.
그러한 이스라엘 민족을 정신 차리게 만들기 위해서 하나님께서 바알 신이 가짜라고 하는 것을 보여주기 위한 극단적인 조치가 취해졌는데, 그것이 무엇이었습니까? 비가 오지 않게 만드는 것이었죠. 풍요의 신, 비를 가져다주는 신 바알 신을 섬기고 있지만, 그러나 하나님께서 막으시니까 이스라엘 땅에 비가 내리지 않는 그런 상황을 맞이하게 되었던 것입니다. 3년이 넘도록 비가 오지 않으면서 이스라엘의 삶은 피폐해지기 시작한 것이죠. 곡식을 거둘 수가 없고, 먹을 것이 떨어지고, 물이 떨어지고, 삶이 정말 피폐해지면서 이스라엘 민족이 고통 가운데 들어가게 되었는데, 지난 3년 반 동안 그런 일들을 경험하면서 이스라엘 민족이 정신을 차렸을까요?
그래도 정신을 못 차렸습니다. 우선 아합 왕이 정신을 차리지 못했습니다. 아합은 엘리야를 만나면서 엘리야를 향해서 외쳤습니다. “이스라엘을 괴롭게 하는 자여 너냐?” 이스라엘을 괴롭게 하는 자가 바로 엘리야라고 하면서 책임을 전가하는 말을 한 것이죠. 아합이 그렇게 반응할 게 아니라 어떻게 반응해야 했었다고 말씀을 드렸습니까? 회개하는 것이 마땅한 것이죠. 하나님 앞에 회개하고 돌아온다면 하나님은 어떠한 하나님이신가? 은혜로우시고 자비로우시고 자비하심이 풍성하셔서 아무리 하나님께서 치셨어도 돌봐주시고 감싸주시는 하나님이기 때문에 하나님께 돌아온다고 한다면 소망이 있었을 텐데, 안타깝게도 아합은 정신을 차리지 못했습니다.
이스라엘 백성들은 정신을 차렸을까요? 이스라엘 백성들도 정신을 못 차렸습니다. 참 신기한 게 우리가 신앙생활하다가 조금만 어려움이 있으면 낙망하고 절망해 버리고, 그래서 믿음에서 떠나는 일이 너무나도 많이 있는데, 그런데 우상이 우리에게 약속한 것을 주지 않을 때는 그 엉터리 생각을 바꾸지 않는 게 어리석은 우리 인생들의 모습인 것이죠. 아무것도 얻지 못하면서도 그 지푸라기와 같은 소망의 끈을 놓지 않는 게 어리석은 인생들의 모습이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다.
그런 이스라엘 사람들에게 바알 신이 가짜라는 것을 분명하게 보여주기 위해서 엘리야 선지자는 바알 선지자 450명과 대결을 벌이는 일을 하게 되었고, 오늘 우리가 읽은 말씀이 바로 그 대결을 앞에 두고 엘리야가 제안한 내용입니다. “이제 우리가 송아지 한 마리로 제물을 삼자. 그리고 나무를 단 위에 올려놓고 각각 자기 하나님 앞에 기도해 보자. 응답하시는 그분이 진짜 하나님이다. 바알 신이 응답하나 여호와 하나님이 응답하나 한번 내기해 보자.” 그래서 참되신 하나님이 누구인지 우리가 확인해 보자고 제안을 했고, 그 말에 모든 이스라엘 민족들이 동의를 하면서 역사적인 세기의 대결, 바알 신과 여호와의 대결이 벌어지게 되었다고 하는 그 과정이 오늘 본문의 말씀 가운데 기록되어 있습니다. 오늘 읽지는 않았지만 그 결과 누가 참되신 하나님으로 판정이 됐습니까? 여호와 하나님이 참되신 하나님이라는 것을 분명히 깨닫게 되는 놀라운 결과를 얻게 된 줄로 믿습니다.
우리가 이 말씀을 살펴보면서 우리들의 마음 가운데 질문이 하나 생깁니다. 그 옛날 하나님께서 이스라엘 민족들에게 “저 바알 신이 진짜 신이 아니라 내가 하나님이다, 저 가짜가 아니라 내가 진짜 하나님이다”라는 사실을 보여준 그 하나님의 역사가 오늘날 있으면 좀 얼마나 좋을까, 그런 마음이 듭니까? 안 듭니까? 들어요. 언제 듭니까? 우리 자녀들을 볼 때마다 들게 되는 거죠. 아무리 얘기해도 말을 안 듣는 우리 자녀들을 볼 때마다 “하나님, 좀 한번 보여주시면 안 됩니까? 하나님께서 좀 보여주셔서 돈이 진짜 신이 아니라 하나님이 진짜 하나님이다, 이 세상의 우상이 진짜가 아니라 하나님이 진짜 하나님이다”라는 것을 좀 확실하게 보여주시고 하늘에서 불을 내려주셔서, 그래서 우리 아이들이 하나님을 받아들이고 회개하는 길로 돌아오고 그래서 하나님을 영접할 수 있게만 만들 수 있다면 얼마나 좋겠습니까? 어쩌면 모든 부모님들이 가지고 있는 공통의 소망일 거라고 생각이 듭니다.
근데 하나님께서 그렇게 해 주시나요? 안 해주시는 것 같나요? 안 해주시는 것 같아요. 안 해주시는 것 같아요. 답답해요. 아니, 왜 그 옛날 엘리야 시대 때는 해 주면서 왜 지금은 안 해줍니까? 왜?
그게 우리가 성경을 읽으면서 던져봐야 할 질문이기도 합니다. 그런데 성경을 보니까 예수님께서 도마를 향해서 이런 말씀을 해주셨어요. 요한복음 20장 29절의 말씀에 “예수께서 이르시되 너는 나를 본 고로 믿느냐 보지 못하고 믿는 자들은 복되다 하시니라.”
예수님께서 부활하신 것을 보여주시면서 확신을 주셨던 것처럼 오늘날에도 좀 주님께서 기적도 보여주시고 은혜도 베풀어 주시고 하나님이 진짜 하나님이라는 사실을 보여주면 좋겠다고 하는 그런 마음을 가지고 있는데, 그런데 성경 전체의 가르침을 우리가 쭉 살펴보면 하나님께서는 놀랍게도 무슨 말씀을 하시냐면 “보지 않고 믿는 게 복되다”라고 말씀하셔요. 기적을 본 다음에 믿는 게 그게 복된 게 아니라, 기적이 없어도, 아무런 하늘에서 불이 내려지는 것 같지 않아도, 하나님께서는 정말 아무것도 안 해주시는 것처럼 보일지라도 그 하나님을 믿고 나의 하나님으로 받아들이는 게 그게 복되다 말씀하고 계시는 거죠.
먼저 우리가 기억할 것이 있다고 한다면 구약 시대에도 항상 하나님께서 하나님 되심을 늘 나타내신 것은 아닙니다. 우리가 성경에 있는 이야기들을 보니까 하나님께서는 늘 하나님 되심을 드러내고, 늘 기적을 베풀어 주시고, 늘 역사하신 것처럼 그렇게 성경을 읽으면서 오해하기 쉬운데, 사실은 그렇게 하나님께서 하나님 되심을 늘 나타내신 것이 아니라 침묵하셨어요. 대부분이 침묵하셨고 가끔 가다가 정말 어떤 그런 상황 가운데서 하나님 되심을 나타내신 이야기가 기록되어 있는 것이지, 대부분의 경우는 침묵하시는 것으로 나타나고 있다고 하는 점을 먼저 우리가 기억해 볼 필요가 있습니다.
왜 그러실까요? 그것을 비유로 들자면 이렇게 비유할 수 있습니다. 그것은 하나님께서 우리가 하나님을 어떻게, 왜 사랑하는가, 왜 우리가 하나님을 섬겨야 하는가에 대한 그것을 하나님께서 우리의 마음의 중심이 무엇인가를 알고 싶어 하시기 때문이라고 말할 수 있을 것 같습니다.
중국 드라마나 중국 영화 같은 걸 보면 종종 이런 주제로 전개되는 것이 많이 있습니다. 무슨 내용이냐 하면, 아주 세계 최대의 재벌인데 그 재벌이 자기가 재벌이라는 사실을 숨기고 마치 그 집의 하인인 것처럼, 그 집의 종인 것처럼, 그 집의 운전사인 것처럼 행세를 하면서 어떤 아가씨를 만나는 거야. 어떤 여인과 사귀는 거예요. 그런데 자기가 사귀는 그 여인이 정작 내가 돈 한 푼이 없는 가난한 거렁뱅이라는 사실을 알고서 그 남자를 내치는 거죠. “너 같은 사람하고 내가 사귈 수 없다” 그러면서 딱 내치는데, 그런데 거기에 어떤 다른 여자는 그 사람을 보고 그 사람의 돈이 아니라, 그 사람의 신분이 아니라, 그 사람의 됨됨이를 보고 좋아하는 여성이 있어서 그 사람과 사귀게 되는데, 나중에 알고 보니까 짜잔 하고 나타나는 거죠. 알고 봤더니 엄청난 재벌인 거야. 세계 최고의 재벌인 거야.
그래서 그전에 자기를 버렸던 그 여자의 코를 납작하게 만들어 버리고, 정말 자기가 아무것도 아닐 때 자기를 사랑해 주었던 그 여인과 결혼한다고 하는 그 중국 드라마, 너무나도 뻔한 얘기인데 재밌어요. 안 보십니까? 봐요. 어떻게 어떻게 보지? 가끔씩 떠서 보는데, 아 진짜 유치한데 재밌어요.
어쩌면 하나님의 마음이 그게 아닌가 싶어요. 하나님이 누구냐? 전능하신 하나님이에요. 만왕의 왕이세요. 그래서 우리들에게 모든 것을 다 해줄 수 있는데, 하나님께서 우리에게 기대하시는 것이 무엇이냐면 하나님의 그 능력, 하나님의 그 기적, 하나님의 그 풍부함 거기에 우리가 목매다는 것이 아니라, “하나님이 누구신가? 하나님은 우리를 사랑하시는 참 하나님이다”라는 그 사실을 믿고 신뢰하고, 내 눈에 아무것도 보이지 않을지라도 하나님을 온전히 믿고 신뢰하는 것을 하나님께서 원하시기 때문에 하나님의 하나님 되심을 그렇게 쉽게 드러내지 않는 것이 아닐까 싶습니다.
하나님께서는 우리에게 무엇을 기대하시는가? 그냥 하나님만으로 감사하는 거, 하나님만으로 기뻐하는 거, 여호와를 아는 것이, 하나님을 의지하는 것이 나의 힘이요 기쁨이라는 것을 알기를 원하시는 것이죠. 증거를 보여주면 그때서야 내 마음이 열리는 게 아니라, 아무런 증거가 없어도 하나님이 어떤 하나님이신가? “나의 하나님”이라는 사실을 알기 때문에 믿는 그 믿음, 그 믿음이 참 믿음이기 때문에 하나님의 그 하나님 되심을 드러내기보다는 감추시면서 오히려 우리의 참된 믿음을 확인하시기를 원하시는 것이 아닐까 싶습니다.
놀랍게도 아브라함은 아무것도 없을 때 하나님을 믿었어요. 저 가나안 땅이 무엇인가를 보여주지 아니하시고, 저 가나안 땅에 가면 무엇이 기다리고 있는가에 대해서 단 하나의 힌트도 주지 않으신 채 말씀하시는 거죠. “너는 네 아버지, 네 본토 고향을 떠나서 내가 가라고 하는 곳으로 갈 수 있겠니?” 그때 아브라함이 하나님을 신뢰하고 간 거예요.
아직 아기가 한 명도 없는데, 이미 내 몸은 늙어버리고 아내도 늙어버리고 아이 하나 가질 수 없는 그런 절망적인 상황 속에서 내가 내 후손을 하늘의 별과 같이, 바닷가의 모래와 같이 많게 해 주시겠다고 하는 그 하나님의 말씀을 신뢰한 거예요. 보지 못하는 가운데 믿는 믿음이 참된 믿음이기 때문에 그렇습니다.
그런데 기적을 바라보는 믿음은 그것이 확실한 것처럼 보이지만 사실은 기적을 본 그 믿음이 너무나도 쉽게 무너져 버린다고 하는 것이 성경에 많이 나옵니다. 제가 성경을 읽으면서 참 이해가 안 되는 부분 중에 하나가 무엇이냐 하면 이스라엘 민족의 그 모습입니다. 이스라엘 민족은 어떤 민족이었는가? 하나님의 기적을 정말 눈앞에서 봤어요. 10가지 재앙으로 애굽 땅을 하나님께서 치시는 그 광경을, 그리고 자기 집에는 안전하고 바로 건너편 애굽 사람들에게는 재앙이 내리는 그 모습들을 그 눈으로 직접 목격하고, 홍해가 갈라지며 자신들을 구원해 냈지만 애굽 군대들은 그 홍해 바다에 몰살시키는 그 장면을 직접 두 눈으로 경험하고, 하늘에서는 만나와 메추라기가, 반석에서는 물이 솟아나오고, 그리고 구름 기둥과 불기둥으로 인도하시는 그 하나님의 놀라운 기적을 본 그 이스라엘 백성들이 믿음이 좋았느냐? 믿음이 좋지 않았어요. 하나님께서 침묵하시는 것 같으면 이내 배신해 버렸습니다. 하나님을 떠나버렸어요. 기적에 의존하는 믿음이 제대로 된 믿음이 아니라, 욥처럼 모든 것이 다 사라져도 “주신 이도 여호와시요 거두신 이도 여호와이시오니 여호와의 이름이 찬송을 받을지라” 찬양하는 그 믿음이 참된 믿음이라는 것을 기억해야 될 줄로 믿습니다.
그러면 아무 증거가 없는가? 하나님의 증거가, 하나님이 하나님이라는 증거가 전혀 없는가? 사실은 전혀 없는 게 아닙니다. 전혀 없는 게 아니라 하나님이 하나님이라는 증거가 널려 있어요. 널려 있어요. 마치 무엇처럼 널려 있어요? 마치 우리 아버지, 우리 엄마처럼 널려 있어요. 우리 엄마가 우리를 사랑하듯이, 우리 아빠가 나를 위해서 희생하듯이, 아빠, 엄마의 사랑이 그 집안에 채워져 있는 것처럼, 우리 엄마는 이웃집 사람이 와서 맛있는 과자를 나에게 주고 건너가는 것처럼 그렇게 주지 않을 수 있어요. 가끔씩 와서 선물을 주고 가는 사람처럼 그렇게 대단한 선물을 내게 주지 않을 수 있어요. 하지만 진짜 사랑하는 분은 누군가? 우리 엄마, 아빠가 제일 사랑해요. 나를 위해서라면 다 줘요. 다 줘.
그리고 우리 자녀들을 위해서라면 내 늙은 몸이 혹시라도 우리 아이들에게 부담이 될까 죽어가면서도 그게 너무 걱정이 돼서 아이들에게 부담 주지 않으려고 하는 그게 부모님의 마음인데, 증거가 얼마나 넘치는가? 매일매일 넘치는가? 매 순간순간마다 넘치는가? 사랑의 증거들이 어마어마하게 넘쳐나는 그런 엄마, 아빠를 향해서 안타깝게도 우리 아이들이 하는 말이 있어요. “아빠가 나 사랑하는 거 맞아? 맨날 밖으로 다니면서 내가 필요할 때 와주지 않고, 엄마는 우리한테 관심이나 있어?”라고 하는 그런 이야기들을 우리 자녀들로부터 듣게 되는 경우가 있지만, 그러나 사실은 그 사랑의 증거들이 너무나도 많은 것처럼 하나님의 증거는 우리가 눈을 감았기 때문에 안 보이는 것이지 아침부터 밤늦게까지 그리고 우리가 잠을 자고 있는 그 순간에도 하나님의 사랑의 증거들은 항상 넘쳐난다는 것을 기억해야 될 줄로 믿습니다.
때때로 하나님께서는 하나님 되심을 보여주어야만 할 때가 있었고, 그럴 때 하나님께서 불로써 응답하셨습니다. 예전에도 한번 말씀을 드렸는데, 제가 어렸을 때 지금으로부터 한 50년 전 얘기죠. 제가 초등학교 다닐 때 어린이날이었어요. 창경원에 데리고 간다고 아빠가 약속을 했어요. 창경원은 그때, 지금은 안 그렇지만 그때 동물원이 있고 그랬잖아요. 그래서 창경원 간다고 들떠 있는데 어린이날 비가 오는 거예요. 그러니까 우리 아버지가 하는 말이 “비 오는데 가지 말자.”
그래서 제가 어떻게 했을까요? “네, 알겠습니다” 한 게 아니라 펑펑 울었어요. “아니, 창경원 간다고 해놓고 왜 안 가냐”고 철없는 아기가 막 운 거죠. 그런 나를 데리고 창경원에 갔어요. 창경원에 데리고 가 보니까 비 오니까 다 동물들이 어디 들어가 버리고 보이지도 않더래요. 그런데 그때 제가 “아, 우리 아빠가 내 아빠 맞구나”를 깨닫게 된 것이죠.
어쩌면 이스라엘 민족들에게 불로서 응답하신 것은 이미 다 증거를 보여주었음에도 불구하고 하나님이 하나님이라는 것을 의심하고 있는 자들에게 보여주신 특별한 하나님의 은총입니다. 하지만 우리는 보지 못해도 믿어야 합니다. 믿습니까?
아마 어떤 사람은 속으로 생각할 거예요. “목사님, 우상의 증거는 없으니까 못 믿는다고 하면서 왜 하나님의 증거는 안 보여도 믿어야 된다고 합니까?”라고 질문할 수 있을 것 같아요. 그런데 우상의 증거는 없으니까 우상은 믿지 말아야 되지만, 하나님의 증거는 없다 할지라도 믿어야 될 이유가 무엇이죠? 하나님은 진짜니까. 그리고 그 하나님의 진짜 되신, 그 하나님의 증거가 널려 있기 때문에 그렇습니다. 하나님은 우리를 사랑하셨기 때문에 그 어느 것도 아깝지 않으셨어요. 하나밖에 없는 아들 예수 그리스도까지도 우리 위에 내어주셨습니다.
놀라운 것은 하나님께서는 우리가 아무런 증거를 보여주지 못해도 받아주신 것입니다. 우리가 믿음으로 사는 증거를 보여주지 못하고, 하나님의 자녀다운 모습의 증거를 보여주지 못하고, 늘 실패하고 늘 넘어졌지만 아무런 증거도 없는 우리들을 하나님의 자녀로 받아주셨습니다.
원하기는 저와 여러분들의 삶 가운데서 헛된 것을 우상으로 삼고 있었던 것들이 무엇인지, 하나님 대신에 우리가 목숨 걸고 있었던 것이 무엇인지 하나씩 하나씩 내려놓으면서 참되신 하나님으로 채워나가는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
The Illusion of Abundance and the Unseen Faith
The people of Israel abandoned God and chose to serve the god Baal. Why did the Israelites choose to serve Baal? Why did they bow down before Baal? It was because Baal promised to bring them abundance.
Of course, Baal did not make that promise directly. Baal is merely a work of human hands—having eyes but not seeing, ears but not hearing, and a mouth but not speaking—so Baal certainly could not have promised anything himself. Then who made them believe such a promise? The spokespersons of Baal made them believe it. King Ahab spoke that way to the Israelites, and the prophets of Baal propagated it, leading the entire nation of Israel to go before Baal.
Did Baal truly bring the abundance he had promised? Or did he not? It seemed as though he was bringing abundance. It felt as though Baal was granting us prosperity. As they offered sacrifices and worshiped Baal, they likely experienced what seemed to be a bountiful harvest that year. Yet, upon seeing the harvest, instead of thinking, “God has given this to us,” they thought, “Because we served Baal, he is giving us this abundance.” Thus, they became convinced, saying, “Ah, it’s true! When we serve Baal, we become prosperous.”
Surely, many testimonies arose. They must have heard people testifying here and there, saying, “How did we serve Baal? When we served him with all our heart and utmost devotion, we received blessings.” Once a person begins to believe such things, it becomes difficult to change their mind.
Ultimately, all the people of Northern Israel fell into the path of apostasy, worshiping Baal and bowing down before him. But was serving Baal always accompanied by abundance? No. At times, rather than abundance, famines occurred. When a famine struck, what did the Israelites think? Did they think, “Ah, Baal is an absolute fraud”? Rather than thinking Baal was fake, they thought, “Our devotion was lacking, we didn’t put in enough effort, what did we do to make Baal angry?”—thus continuing a vicious cycle of confirmation bias that drove them to bow down before Baal even more.
To bring the Israelites to their senses and show them that Baal was a fake, God took drastic measures: He caused it not to rain. Although they were serving Baal, the god of abundance and rain, because God withheld it, they faced a situation where no rain fell on the land of Israel. As the drought dragged on for over three years, life in Israel began to wither. With no crops to harvest, a shortage of food, a lack of water, and an increasingly ruined livelihood, the Israelites plunged into deep suffering. Did the Israelites come to their senses after experiencing such things for three and a half years?
Still, they did not come to their senses. Above all, King Ahab did not wake up. When Ahab met Elijah, he cried out to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?” shifting the blame onto Elijah. How should Ahab have responded instead, as we discussed? Repentance was the proper course. If he had repented and returned to God—knowing that God is gracious, compassionate, and abounding in steadfast love, ready to care for and embrace us no matter how severely He disciplined us—there would have been hope had he returned to God. Sadly, Ahab did not wake up.
Did the people of Israel come to their senses? The Israelites did not wake up either. It is truly astonishing: whenever we face even slight difficulties in our walk of faith, we easily grow discouraged, fall into despair, and drift away from faith. Yet, when idols fail to deliver what they promised, foolish people refuse to change their absurd mindset. Clinging to a hopeless thread of a wish even when gaining nothing characterizes the foolishness of human life.
To clearly show such Israelites that Baal was a fake, the prophet Elijah arranged a showdown with 450 prophets of Baal. The text we read today is the proposal Elijah made prior to that confrontation:
“Let us take one bull for ourselves, and let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. And you call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the LORD, and the God who answers by fire, he is God.”
He proposed that they find out who the true God is, and all the people agreed, leading to the historic, monumental showdown between Baal and the Lord recorded in today’s passage. Though we did not read it today, who was vindicated as the true God? We believe we obtain the wonderful realization that the Lord is the true God.
As we examine this passage, a question arises in our hearts. Do we or do we not harbor the desire: “How wonderful it would be if God’s historical display—showing those ancient Israelites, ‘That Baal is not the real God, but I am; that false god is not real, but I am the true God’—happened today as well?” When do we feel this most? Whenever we look at our children. Whenever we see our children ignoring our words no matter how much we talk to them, we think: “Can’t God show Himself just once? Can’t God reveal Himself to prove that money isn’t the true god, but God is? Can’t He make it clear that this world’s idols are false and God is true by sending fire from heaven, so that our children might accept Him, turn back in repentance, and embrace Him?” Perhaps that is a common hope shared by all parents.
Does God do that for us? Does it seem like He doesn’t? It feels like He doesn’t. It feels frustrating. Why did He do it back in the days of Elijah, but why doesn’t He do it now? Why?
That is also a question we must pose as we read Scripture. Yet, when we look at the Bible, Jesus spoke these words to Thomas:
“Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have yet believed.'” (John 20:29, ESV)
Just as Jesus provided assurance by showing His resurrection, we often desire that the Lord would show miracles, bestow grace, and prove that God is real today. Yet, when we examine the overarching teaching of Scripture, God surprisingly declares, “Blessed are those who believe without seeing.” The blessed path is not believing only after witnessing miracles; rather, even if there are no miracles, even if no fire descends from heaven, and even if God seems to be doing nothing at all, believing in Him and accepting Him as our God is what is truly blessed.
First, we must remember that even in the Old Testament, God did not always constantly display His divinity. Reading biblical stories, we easily fall into the misconception that God continually revealed His divine identity, worked miracles, and constantly intervened. In reality, God did not constantly manifest His divinity in that manner; rather, He remained silent. Most of the time He was silent, and only occasionally did He record stories of displaying His divinity in specific circumstances. We must first keep in mind that most instances are marked by His silence.
Why is that? To use an illustration, we can look at it this way: because God wants to know the true condition of our hearts—why and how we love Him, and why we ought to serve Him.
If you watch Chinese dramas or movies, this theme frequently appears. The plot often involves a supreme billionaire who hides his wealth, acting like a humble servant, a low-level employee, or a driver while meeting a young woman. That woman discovers he is a penniless beggar with not a penny to his name, and she rejects him, saying, “I cannot date someone like you!” Meanwhile, another woman loves him not for his money, status, or identity, but for his character, choosing to date him. Later, he reveals his true identity: he is the wealthiest tycoon in the world. He puts the first woman to shame and marries the woman who loved him when he had nothing. It’s a cliché Chinese drama plot, but it’s entertaining. Don’t you watch them? I do. How do I watch them? They pop up occasionally, and though cheesy, they are fun.
Perhaps God’s heart is something like that. Who is God? He is Almighty God, the King of kings. He can give us everything. Yet what does He expect from us? He does not want us to fixate merely on His power, His miracles, or His abundance. He wants us to truly know who He is—that He is the true God who loves us—to trust and believe in Him, and to rely on Him completely even when nothing is visible to our eyes. Because He desires this genuine trust, He does not easily flash His divine identity.
What does God expect from us? To simply be grateful for God alone, to rejoice in God alone, knowing that knowing the Lord and relying on Him is our strength and joy. He wants us to realize this not because evidence opens our hearts, but because we believe simply because we know who He is—our God. That faith is true faith, which is why He conceals His divine overtness rather than exposing it, seeking to confirm our authentic faith.
Astoundingly, Abraham believed in God when he had nothing. Without showing him what the land of Canaan looked like, and without giving a single hint of what awaited him there, God told him: “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.” And Abraham went, trusting God.
When he had not a single child, when his body and his wife’s body were already old and in a hopeless situation where having a child was impossible, he trusted God’s promise to make his descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Faith that believes without seeing is true faith.
Yet, Scripture frequently shows that faith resting upon miracles—though it appears certain—collapses all too easily. One of the aspects of Israel’s history that I find hard to grasp while reading Scripture is their behavior. What kind of nation were the Israelites? They witnessed God’s miracles right before their eyes. They saw God strike the land of Egypt with ten plagues, experiencing safety in their own homes while disaster struck the Egyptians right next door. They witnessed the Red Sea parting to save them while drowning the Egyptian army. They experienced manna and quail falling from heaven, water gushing from a rock, and guidance through pillars of cloud and fire. Yet, despite seeing these amazing miracles, was their faith strong? Their faith was weak. Whenever God seemed silent, they betrayed Him immediately and turned away from Him. Faith dependent on miracles is not genuine faith. True faith, like Job’s, praises God saying, “The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD,” even when everything is gone. We must remember that this is true faith.
Does this mean there is no evidence at all? Is there zero proof that God is God? In reality, evidence is not entirely absent. It is not absent at all; evidence that God is God is scattered everywhere. Scattered like our father and our mother. Just as our mother loves us, just as our father sacrifices for us, just as parental love fills a home—even if our mother isn’t the type to give us extravagant gifts like a neighbor dropping by with expensive snacks—our parents love us most. They give us everything for our sake.
And for their children, a mother or father might worry even on their deathbed that their aging bodies will burden their children, trying desperately not to cause them trouble. Such is the heart of a parent. How overflowing is that evidence? Day after day, moment by moment, enormous proof of love overflows. Yet, tragically, what do children say to parents who show such boundless love? “Dad, do you really love me? You’re always out and don’t come when I need you. Mom, do you even care about us?” Children sometimes utter such things. But just as that overwhelming love is real, we must remember that God’s evidence of love is constantly overflowing—from dawn to late at night, and even in the moments we sleep—because we simply close our eyes to it.
At times, there were moments when God had to display His divine identity, and on those occasions, He answered by fire. As I mentioned before, about fifty years ago when I was a child, it was Children’s Day. My father promised to take me to Changgyeongwon. Changgyeongwon had a zoo back then, unlike today. Excited about going, I woke up on Children’s Day only to find it raining. So my father said, “Let’s not go in the rain.”
How did I react? Instead of saying, “Okay,” I burst into tears. Crying my eyes out like a clueless toddler, I complained, “You said we were going to Changgyeongwon, why aren’t we going?” So he took me anyway. When we got there, because of the rain, all the animals were hidden inside and nothing was visible. But at that moment, I realized: “Ah, this man really is my father.”
Perhaps God answering the Israelites by fire was a special act of grace shown to those who doubted that God was truly God, despite all the evidence previously given. Yet we must believe even without seeing. Do we believe?
Some of you might be thinking inwardly: “Pastor, why do you say we must believe in God without seeing evidence while claiming idols shouldn’t be trusted due to lack of evidence?” You might ask that question. But why should we believe in God even if there seems to be no visible proof? Because God is real. And the evidence of that real God is scattered everywhere. Because God loved us, nothing was too precious for Him; He even gave up His only Son, Jesus Christ, for us.
The amazing thing is that God accepted us even when we could show no proof. Though we failed to present evidence of living by faith, failed to show the proof of a godly lifestyle, and constantly failed and stumbled, He accepted us—destitute of proof—as children of God.
May all of us put aside whatever vain things we have made into idols, whatever we have staked our lives on instead of God, one by one, and fill our lives with the true God. I pray in the name of the Lord that this may be true for all of us!
