하지만 우리가 늘 기억해야 될 것이 있다고 한다면 영어 표현으로는 “Too good to be true” 라고 하는 말이 있습니다.

Beyond Defense: Living Out the Gospel in a Deceptive World

Have you ever been deceived by a voice phishing scam? Are you too embarrassed to admit it?

These days, voice phishing scams are so widespread that we can truly relate to the old saying, “You could have your nose cut off right in front of your eyes without even realizing it.” In other words, we live in a world where people can be deceived even when they think they are being careful.

But there is something we should always remember. There is an English expression that says, “Too good to be true.”

It means that when something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

I think it is important to remember that sometimes the things that appear most attractive to us are actually bait designed to lure us into a trap.

And yet, even as I say this, I have to admit that I worry about becoming a victim of voice phishing myself!

But we need to understand that the danger of being deceived is not limited to voice phishing in the world around us. There is also a danger of being deceived spiritually.

We must not allow ourselves to be deceived.

In Ephesians 5:6, which we read today, the apostle Paul gives us this warning:

“Let no one deceive you with empty words.”

What does it mean when the Bible tells us not to let anyone deceive us with empty words?

Does it mean that we must stop those who are trying to deceive others from doing so?

In reality, that is impossible. We cannot eliminate voice phishing simply by deciding that we want to get rid of it. There will always be people who devise schemes to deceive us and bring us down. No matter how hard we try to eliminate such people and their schemes, they continue to appear.

So what does this command mean?

When the Bible says, “Let no one deceive you with empty words,” it is not telling us that we must eliminate every deceiver. Rather, it is telling us that we must not be deceived by what they say.

What happens if someone deceives us and we fall for the deception?

We can suffer tremendous losses. We can find ourselves facing serious difficulties.

In 1 Kings 13, we read a story that illustrates this very point.

God commanded a prophet to go to the northern kingdom of Israel and proclaim His word there.

God also gave him specific instructions. He told him to go, proclaim His word, and then return quickly. He was not to eat bread or drink water there, even if someone offered him food and hospitality. He was to refuse everything and return immediately.

The prophet obeyed God’s command. He went to the place where Jeroboam, the king of Israel, was, and there he proclaimed God’s word.

Afterward, he intended to return home immediately, just as God had instructed him.

But then someone appeared. He was an old prophet who lived in the northern kingdom of Israel.

This old prophet approached him and said, “I, too, have received a message from God. God spoke to me and commanded me to invite you to my house and provide you with food.”

The prophet was deceived.

Even though God had already given him clear instructions, he believed the old prophet when he claimed to have received a message from God.

As a result, the prophet went with him, ate and drank, and rested at his house. But because he had disobeyed God’s command, he came under God’s judgment and eventually died.

When people read this story, they often raise an important question.

Who was at fault? Was the person who was deceived at fault, or was it the person who did the deceiving?

After all, the person who lied was the one who did something wrong. Why, then, did the person who was innocently deceived suffer God’s judgment?

People often ask this question.

But the fact remains that being deceived does not make the consequences harmless.

When we are deceived, we can suffer losses. When we are deceived, we can find ourselves in serious trouble. That is a reality we cannot ignore.

Think about Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

God had commanded them not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Yet Eve was deceived by Satan.

Satan appeared in the form of a serpent and persuaded Eve that it would be all right to eat the fruit. He told her that if she ate it, her eyes would be opened and she would become like God.

She believed the lie and ate the fruit.

Was she deceived? Was she a victim?

What should we say?

She acted foolishly. And as a result of that decision, humanity entered a path of destruction.

When we consider this, we realize that we must be careful not only to avoid voice phishing in our everyday lives but also to avoid falling for Satan’s deception in our spiritual lives.

I believe this is an important lesson for all of us.

In Ephesians 5:5–7, the apostle Paul gives us this warning:

“For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous—that is, an idolater—has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them.”

The Bible warns us not to be deceived.

Do not be deceived.

And what danger does the Bible say we face if we allow ourselves to be deceived?

It says that we will have no inheritance in the kingdom of God.

The word translated as “inheritance” can also be understood as an “inheritance” or “heritage”—something that belongs to us as our rightful share.

Paul is warning us that if we are deceived and follow the path he describes, we will have no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

What does this mean?

Does it mean that we will still enter heaven but receive no rewards, arriving in a miserable condition, as though we were wearing a shabby hat in heaven?

No. That is not what this passage means.

To have no inheritance in the kingdom of God means not to enter the kingdom at all.

The Bible is warning us that being deceived is not a minor matter that simply deserves a sympathetic response, as though we were saying, “Oh, what a shame.”

Rather, it warns us that the consequences are extremely serious. We could lose our eternal life and find ourselves excluded from God’s kingdom.

If we give in to Satan’s temptations and persist in doing things that displease God—for example, if we live in sexual immorality, impurity, greed, or idolatry—the Bible warns us that we will forfeit our inheritance in God’s kingdom.

Therefore, we must take the danger of being deceived by Satan very seriously. We must make every effort not to fall into his traps.

But how can we avoid being deceived?

How can we resist Satan’s temptations? What can we do to protect ourselves from spiritual deception?

The answer is to actively live in obedience to the will of God.

There is a saying in soccer: “The best defense is a good offense.”

In other words, sometimes the best way to defend yourself is to take the initiative and go on the attack.

Some years ago, when Son Heung-min was playing for Tottenham Hotspur, there was a saying among Korean soccer fans that you may or may not have heard.

The expression was “Son-na-gol.”

Have you ever heard of it?

Apparently not! Perhaps you have been spending too much time reading the Bible to follow soccer news!

The expression “Son-na-gol” was a playful way of saying that when Son Heung-min came off the field, Tottenham would concede a goal. Fans used it because there were many occasions when Tottenham would be playing well, only for the team to concede a goal after Son was substituted and then draw or lose the match.

Why did this happen?

Was Son Heung-min a defender?

No. He was an attacking player.

So why would taking an attacker off the field sometimes cause the defense to collapse?

The reason was that when Son was on the field, the opposing team had to be cautious about pushing forward.

They were afraid that Son might score against them, so they could not attack as freely or push their defensive line as high as they wanted.

But once Son left the field, the opposing team felt more comfortable attacking. As they began pushing forward, Tottenham’s defense could come under pressure, and the team would sometimes concede a goal.

That is the idea behind the expression “Son-na-gol.”

Our spiritual lives work in a similar way.

How can we avoid being deceived? If all we do is try to defend ourselves against Satan’s temptations, it will be difficult to preserve our faith. Simply trying to withstand Satan’s attacks is not enough to overcome them.

So what must we do?

We must actively obey God’s Word and live according to His will.

Ephesians 5:8 says:

“For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.”

The Bible tells us that we were once darkness, but now, in the Lord, we have become light. Therefore, we must live as children of light.

Our lives should not be devoted merely to avoiding sin in a defensive, passive way. Instead, we must ask ourselves how we can avoid being deceived by actively living out God’s will.

When we sincerely follow God’s will and live as His children, we become less vulnerable to deception.

Ephesians 5:9 tells us:

“For the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true.”

We must live lives characterized by goodness, righteousness, and truth.

The Bible teaches us that this is what it means to live as children of light rather than being led astray.

Then, in Ephesians 5:10, Paul says:

“Try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.”

The word translated as “try” or “discern” means to examine something carefully and determine whether it is right.

In other words, we should ask ourselves whether what we are doing is truly pleasing to God.

As we face the decisions of everyday life, we must continually ask this question and actively seek to obey God’s will.

I believe that this is how all of us should live.

There is a famous book that was written quite some time ago, in 1896, by a man named Charles Sheldon.

Have you heard of it?

It is called In His Steps, and it is widely known for the question at the heart of its story: “What Would Jesus Do?”

Have you ever read it?

Perhaps you have at least heard of it.

In the book, a pastor named Henry Maxwell challenges the members of his church to make a commitment.

He proposes that they make a promise for one year. Before doing anything, they will stop and ask themselves one question.

“What would Jesus do?”

They will ask that question before they act and then make their decisions accordingly.

From that point on, their lives gradually begin to change.

Even when they are doing things they would normally do without a second thought, they stop for a moment and reflect.

What would Jesus do in this situation?

How would Jesus respond if He were in my position?

As they begin asking these questions, their lives gradually change, and they begin to live more and more like children of light.

In the same way, I believe we should ask ourselves these questions throughout our daily lives:

“Will my life, my words, my actions, and my attitude truly be pleasing to God? Will they please the Lord? What would Jesus do if He were in my place?”

As we continually ask these questions, we must actively seek to live as children of light.

So, is it all right for us to grumble and complain?

No.

Is it all right for us to keep expressing dissatisfaction?

No.

Is it all right for us to envy others and hold grudges?

No.

Is it all right for us to hate others?

No.

Is it all right for us to give in to anger?

No.

Instead of living with envy, jealousy, complaints, resentment, and irritation, we must become people of faith who give thanks in every circumstance, show kindness in every situation, treat others with gentleness, and respond to them with love.

That is how children of light should live.

Furthermore, Ephesians 5:11 gives us this instruction:

“Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.”

The Bible tells us not to participate in the unfruitful works of darkness. Instead, we are to expose them.

But I hope we will not misunderstand this verse.

Just because the Bible tells us to expose the works of darkness does not mean that we should go around scolding, condemning, and criticizing everyone who does something wrong.

Why not?

Because elsewhere in Scripture, we are warned not to make ourselves teachers over others.

It is not pleasing to God when we behave as though we are superior to everyone else, constantly correcting, criticizing, and condemning them.

So what does it mean to “expose” the works of darkness?

It does not primarily mean that we should go around pointing out other people’s faults and arguing with them about their failures.

Rather, it means that we should live such holy and godly lives that others, when they see our example, become aware of the darkness in their own lives.

When we live according to God’s will, the people around us may begin to feel convicted by the contrast between their lives and ours.

Unfortunately, however, we often misunderstand this and end up imitating the Pharisees.

In fact, there are far too many instances in which churches in Korea seem to resemble the Pharisees more than they resemble Jesus.

Like the Pharisees, people sometimes boast about how carefully they keep God’s commandments. Then they look down on those who do not live the same way and ask, “Why can’t you live like this?”

They criticize others, condemn them, and act as though they are morally superior.

And they mistakenly believe that this is what it means to live faithfully.

But that is not the right attitude of faith.

Condemning others, criticizing them, and acting like their teacher is not what God desires of us.

Why?

Because Jesus Himself taught us otherwise in Matthew 7:1–5:

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.

Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?

Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?

You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”

Why is the gospel not being received as it should be in our time?

Why is it that when the church proclaims the gospel, people in the world often respond by pointing fingers at Christians and mocking them instead?

The problem is that the church sometimes speaks loudly, but when people look at the lives of its members, they see little difference between them and everyone else.

In some cases, they see Christians behaving even worse than those who do not believe.

Instead of showing love and mercy, Christians sometimes display hatred, contempt, and hostility.

How often do people see these attitudes and behaviors among those who claim to follow Jesus?

That is not how the Bible teaches us to live.

Yet when we behave like the Pharisees—boasting about our own righteousness and pointing fingers at the world—we fail to inspire others.

Instead, people mock us and say, “If that is what it means to be a Christian, I don’t want to believe in Jesus.”

And they turn away.

The same is true of our children.

When we constantly scold, criticize, insult, and argue with our children, they are unlikely to look at us and think, “I want to live according to God’s Word.”

Instead, they may close their hearts to us and to the faith we profess.

So what is the best way to lead others toward God?

I believe it is to live holy lives as God’s children, as children of light.

When others become angry, what should we do?

We should exercise patience and self-control.

We should treat people with generosity and grace.

When others complain, what should we do?

We should give thanks and offer praise to God.

When others become greedy and selfish, what should we do?

We should be willing to yield, to make sacrifices, and even to accept a personal loss for the sake of others.

That is how we live as children of God’s light.

Let us also consider what happened in the time of Jesus.

There were many Gentiles who had converted to Judaism or had become associated with the Jewish faith. They attended synagogue services and worshiped alongside the Jewish people.

The synagogues were not attended exclusively by Jews. Many Gentiles also came to learn about the Jewish faith and participate in worship.

After Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into heaven, the apostle Paul traveled from city to city, often entering synagogues to proclaim the gospel. Many of these Gentiles came to believe in Jesus, and the church grew tremendously as a result.

But this raises an interesting question.

Why were so many Gentiles already attending Jewish synagogues in the first place?

Was it because the Jews were actively evangelizing them?

No, that was not the main reason.

Many Jews regarded themselves as God’s chosen people and considered Gentiles to be outside that covenant community. Some even viewed Gentiles as people under God’s judgment. As a result, they often made little effort to invite Gentiles to believe in the God of Israel.

They simply practiced their own faith.

But beginning in the time of Alexander the Great, migration and trade expanded, and people from different cultures came into increasing contact with one another.

As Gentiles encountered Jewish communities, many were deeply impressed by what they saw.

In their own religious cultures, they were familiar with the worship of many gods, and some religious practices involved sexual immorality, deception, exploitation, and other forms of wrongdoing.

But when they encountered the Jews, they discovered a people who worshiped one God—the one true God, who could not be seen—and who sought to live holy lives according to His commandments.

They saw people who were trying to live according to the Word of God.

And they were amazed.

“How can people live like this?”

Their curiosity led many Gentiles to enter the synagogues, learn about the Scriptures, and discover the Jewish belief in the one true God.

In this way, many Gentiles became associated with Jewish communities and participated in synagogue worship.

Something similar happened when the gospel first came to Korea.

Western missionaries came to Korea to proclaim the gospel. But did the people living in Korea during the Joseon Dynasty welcome them with open arms?

Or did they reject them?

At that time, Korea maintained a policy of isolation, and many people were deeply suspicious of foreigners.

In particular, rumors spread that Christians refused to perform ancestral rites. Because of this, many people closed their hearts to Christianity.

They thought of Christians as disgraceful people who had forgotten their ancestors and failed to show gratitude for the blessings they had received from previous generations.

So, in a society where so many people were suspicious of Christianity, how did so many eventually come to the church, believe in Jesus, and become God’s people?

The answer is that they witnessed something extraordinary.

They saw how the Western missionaries lived.

In that society, women were often looked down upon, and people from lower social classes were treated with contempt.

But the missionaries came and treated women with dignity. They showed respect to people from the lowest social classes. When someone was sick, they did their best to care for that person. When someone lacked access to education, they helped provide the resources needed to study.

People witnessed these remarkable acts of love and compassion.

And as they did, the walls around their hearts began to come down. Through the missionaries’ example, many people were drawn to the Lord.

What a remarkable work of grace!

But what about the Korean church today?

Too often, we have lost our spiritual and moral credibility. We are not much different from the world around us. In some cases, we even show more hatred, hostility, and harmful behavior toward others than those who do not believe.

And then, despite our hypocrisy, we continue to speak about Jesus.

Is it any wonder that people are reluctant to accept the gospel?

The Bible does not teach us to live this way.

Instead, it calls us to live as children of light.

So today, I hope that you and I will make a firm commitment in our hearts.

Let us turn to the person next to us and encourage one another by saying:

“Let us live as children of light.”

Will you commit to living that way?

But there is a problem.

What is the problem?

The problem is that we do not have the ability to live this way perfectly on our own.

Who are we, after all?

We are all human beings with the same weaknesses.

We make many mistakes. Various sinful thoughts and desires sometimes take control of our hearts. At times, we become angry. At times, we become discouraged. And at times, we inevitably make serious mistakes.

That is the reality of our fallen human nature. We are weak, and we are sinful.

So what should you and I do?

Every time we stumble, we must return to the cross of Jesus Christ.

We must pray:

“Lord, You bore our sins and shed Your blood on the cross for us. Please wash us clean through the precious blood You shed. Forgive us for all the sins we have committed, and transform us so that we may renew our commitment and live as Your faithful children.”

Not one of us is perfect.

We stumble, and we fall again and again.

That is precisely why Jesus had to come into this world.

That is why Jesus had to be crucified and die on the cross for us.

Therefore, let us come before Jesus moment by moment and pray:

“Lord, please transform us. Wash us clean through Your precious blood, and help us live as children of light.”

May all of us become people who continually come before the Lord in repentance and faith, asking Him to renew our hearts and empower us to live as His children.

Amen.
