A Wise King Separates the Wicked from the Righteous (Proverbs 20:26)

Today, we have been reflecting on the Word of God, particularly Proverbs 20:26. What does a wise king do? The verse says that he winnows. What does it mean to winnow? Do people still winnow grain these days? Probably not. But you know what winnowing is, don’t you? What is winnowing? When grain is placed in a winnowing basket and tossed into the air, the good kernels remain, while the chaff and straw, the useless parts, are carried away by the wind. In other words, winnowing is the process of gathering the good grain and separating it from everything that is worthless. Just as winnowing separates the grain from the chaff, what does a wise king do? He winnows out the wicked. In other words, a wise king distinguishes between the righteous and the wicked, between those who do good and those who do evil.

In this world, the righteous and the wicked live side by side. Does only good people live in this world? Or does only wicked people live here? No. They are mixed together, aren’t they? In a world where the righteous and the wicked live side by side, we would hope to see a society where truly righteous people are respected and those who do good are recognized. But creating such a society is extremely difficult. When the righteous and the wicked are mixed together, who is more likely to win? Who will prevail? Very often, it is the wicked. Why do the wicked have the advantage? Because they are willing to use any means necessary. They are willing to resort to dirty and dishonest methods. But the righteous cannot do that. They cannot lie like the wicked. They cannot slander others like the wicked. They must live in obedience to the Word of God. That puts them at a disadvantage in the struggle. The wicked will use every possible method to achieve their goals and satisfy their greed. They will do whatever it takes. But the righteous cannot do that. As a result, in a world where good and evil are mixed together, the righteous often suffer and experience hardship, while the wicked seem to succeed and prevail.

And when the wicked achieve success through all kinds of dishonest means, people tend to look only at the outward results. They judge whether someone is good or bad based on what that person has accomplished. Consequently, the wicked are often recognized and praised, while the righteous are overlooked and denied the recognition they deserve. We see this happening far too often. That is why living in a world where the righteous and the wicked are mixed together can be so painful.

So what is the role of a king in this situation? What is the responsibility of a wise king? It is to distinguish between the righteous and the wicked, reward those who are righteous, and bring judgment upon those who are wicked. This is what a righteous and wise king is supposed to do. Proverbs 20:26 teaches us that a wise king winnows out the wicked and judges them, crushing them as though grinding them with a millstone. This is what a wise king does.

But what is the problem? The problem is that it is difficult to distinguish between the righteous and the wicked. Do wicked people come forward and announce, “I am wicked”? Do they introduce themselves by saying, “I am an evil person. I am a bad person”? Of course not. False prophets come disguised in sheep’s clothing. They appear to be good people, even appearing to be faithful prophets of God. Everyone presents themselves as though they are right, righteous, and just. Everyone claims to want to do what is right. Everyone says that they are standing rightly before God. So how can we tell who is truly righteous and who is wicked? That is one of the great difficulties we face.

It is extremely difficult for us to judge other people. Why is it so difficult for us to judge others correctly? It is because our judgment is always limited by a lack of information. We do not fully understand the truth. We do not know every detail of a situation. We cannot see everything from beginning to end and then arrive at a completely informed conclusion. In this life, we can only see part of the picture. We can see only what is in front of us, from the particular place where we happen to be standing. We cannot see what is happening behind us. We judge everything from our own position and according to our own circumstances. Because our perspective is limited, our information is incomplete, and sometimes the information we receive is even misleading, it is difficult for us to make accurate judgments. That is our problem.

A wise king should be able to distinguish accurately between the righteous and the wicked and bring judgment upon the wicked. But unfortunately, we are not perfectly wise people. We are often foolish. We do not know everything. We have limited perspectives and can see only a small part of the whole picture. That is our problem.

There is a story that illustrates this very clearly. It is a story about something that happened during the time when King David was fleeing for his life. What kind of person was David? He was an extraordinary man. He was someone who could be described as a man after God’s own heart. Yet even David, despite his remarkable character, failed to make the right judgment because he had limited information. When David was forced to flee from his throne because of Absalom’s rebellion, someone appeared before him. Who was it? It was the servant of Mephibosheth. What was the servant’s name? Ziba. Ziba, the servant of Mephibosheth, came before King David as he was fleeing. He brought a large amount of food and provisions for the king. He said, “My king, please take this food and regain your strength.” David had been forced to flee in great haste. He had left without being able to prepare or take anything with him. And now here was Ziba, bringing him plenty of food and provisions. Imagine how David must have felt! His own son had rebelled against him and was trying to kill him. But here was Ziba, a servant of Mephibosheth, who had gone out of his way to prepare food for him. How wonderful! How deeply moving! David must have been so grateful.

What kind of thoughts might have crossed David’s mind when he saw Ziba? Perhaps Ziba looked like an angel sent by God Himself. Ziba appeared to be such a wonderful person. David asked him, “Why didn’t your master Mephibosheth come with you?” And Ziba replied: “My master said, ‘Today the house of Israel will give me back the kingdom of my father Saul.'” In other words, Ziba accused his master of hoping that the kingdom would be restored to Saul’s family while David was in trouble. When David heard this accusation from a servant against his own master, his heart became filled with anger toward Mephibosheth. And what decision did David make? He said, “All that belongs to Mephibosheth is now yours.” But was that the right judgment? Was it really fair? No. Mephibosheth had not betrayed David. In fact, Mephibosheth was deeply grateful to David. He respected him, honored him, and loved him. But Ziba had slandered his master, and David, having listened to Ziba’s words, came to a completely mistaken conclusion.

Why was David able to make such a foolish judgment, treating a righteous person as wicked and a wicked person as righteous? It was because, as extraordinary as David was, he did not have access to the whole truth. Human beings can see only part of the picture. We cannot see everything. We cannot know everything. We see only what is visible to our eyes. We hear only what reaches our ears. And based on what we see and hear, we make judgments and convince ourselves that our conclusions are correct. But David’s judgment was wrong. He treated a righteous person as though he were wicked and regarded the wicked person as though he were righteous. We cannot even begin to count how often similar things happen in our lives. We live in a world where the righteous are treated like wicked people and the wicked are regarded as righteous. And sometimes, without even realizing it, we ourselves make the very same mistakes.

Let me share another story. There was once a bull living in a forest. One day, a monkey came walking past the bull. The monkey began looking at the bull and teasing him every day. He would kick up dust toward the bull, knock over his food bowl, and do all sorts of things to bother and torment him. Every time this happened, the bull simply endured it. The bull would look at the little monkey playing these tricks on him, but he never bothered to respond. When the monkey came and played around, the bull simply thought, “Oh, I suppose he is just playing.” When the monkey knocked over his food bowl, the bull thought, “Well, the little fellow is probably just fooling around.” He endured this, and then endured that. As the years went by, the monkey continued to torment him, but the bull said nothing. He patiently endured everything and continued to give the monkey time. It was as though the bull kept saying, “Please don’t do that. Please stop doing that,” while patiently waiting for the monkey to change.

But one day, something happened. The monkey kept crossing the line, again and again, until finally he went too far. This time, he attacked the bull’s little calf. He struck the young calf and walked away. When the bull saw what had happened, he became furious. He had endured so much up to that point. But he could no longer tolerate the monkey harming his own baby. So the bull lowered his horns, struck the monkey, and sent him flying. What do you think the monkey did next? Wounded by the bull’s horns, the monkey went around the animal kingdom, complaining about what had happened. He began telling all the other animals: “Look, everyone! The bull stabbed me like this! Look at what he did to me with those terrible horns!” When the other animals heard the monkey’s story, they began saying: “That bull is terrible! He is such a bad bull!” They started criticizing and condemning him. But they had absolutely no idea how badly the monkey had behaved over the years or how much the bull had endured. All they could see was the wounded monkey standing in front of them. So they blamed the bull based on what they saw.

We see similar things happening in our own lives all the time. Imagine an employee who constantly causes problems. He does not work diligently. He creates financial problems. He repeatedly makes mistakes and engages in all kinds of misconduct. Nevertheless, the employer patiently puts up with him, teaches him, helps him, and gives him many opportunities to improve. But one day, the employee does something so wrong that the employer can no longer tolerate it. Eventually, the employer has no choice but to dismiss him. And what happens the next day? The employee begins posting all kinds of accusations and insults on social media. He tells everyone how terrible his employer is and claims that he was unfairly dismissed. People who hear his story begin criticizing the employer. They even join boycott campaigns, trying to destroy the company. How often do we see situations like this? The righteous person becomes the villain, while the wicked person is portrayed as an innocent victim. These things happen far too often.

As a result, the righteous suffer. They experience deep wounds and sometimes become so devastated that they cannot even get back on their feet. This happens in our lives more often than we realize. So what should a wise king do? What should a wise king do in such circumstances? A wise king must distinguish accurately between the righteous and the wicked. He must recognize the righteous as righteous and winnow out the wicked. That is what Proverbs 20:26 teaches us today.

What lessons, then, can we learn from this verse?

  1. We Must Become Wise Kings Who Judge Righteously

The first lesson is this: If we are kings, we must become wise kings. And if we are to be wise kings, we must learn to judge accurately, recognizing the wicked as wicked and the righteous as righteous. Now, this passage speaks about what a king should do. So does this message apply to us? Or does it have nothing to do with us? Does it apply to us or not? Yes, it certainly applies to us. Why? Because we are kings!

Now, turn to the person next to you and say: “You are a king! I didn’t recognize Your Majesty. Please forgive me for not recognizing your royal status!” This message is not something unrelated to us. The truth is that we are all kings in some sense. A king is someone who has a domain to govern and exercises authority within that domain. And every one of us has our own little kingdom, whether large or small.

For example, we have an expression: “The customer is king.” Why is the customer called a king? When a customer enters a store, that customer exercises the power to purchase something by paying money. The customer has the authority to decide whether to buy something or not. The customer can decide whether the food at a restaurant is delicious or not and whether to eat it or leave it. In that sense, the customer exercises authority like a king.

In the same way, each of us is a king in some sense. Where are we kings? In the home, parents are kings. Isn’t that right? They are kings within their families. Who is the king at school? The teachers are. Where is a doctor a king? In the examination room. Doctors exercise their medical authority and make important decisions regarding their patients. And even those who do not hold any particular official position still have their own areas of influence. On social media, each person is the king of their own little world.

In everything we do, we make judgments and decisions as people who exercise a certain degree of authority. In that sense, every one of us carries something of the role of a king. In particular, the Bible describes us by saying: “You are a royal priesthood.” Therefore, whether our sphere of influence is large or small, each of us has a responsibility to fulfill our role as a king within the area entrusted to us.

If we are kings, how should we make judgments? We must become wise kings who make righteous judgments and winnow out the wicked. Do you believe that? Then how can we, as kings, make judgments that allow us to distinguish and remove the wicked? How can we determine whether someone is truly wicked? We must judge accurately. The Bible teaches us that to fulfill our role as kings, we need the ability to judge wisely and recognize wickedness for what it truly is.

Then how can we make wise judgments? In John 7:24, Jesus says: “Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.” Jesus is telling us not to judge people by what we see on the outside or by their outward appearance. Instead, we must judge according to what is truly right and according to the truth. Just because a monkey appears before us wounded, we should not automatically condemn the bull. We must first find out what actually happened. We must understand the whole story before making a judgment. We must not mistakenly regard the wicked as righteous and innocent victims, while treating the righteous as wicked.

James 1:19 tells us: “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” What does it mean to speak? We speak because we have already formed some kind of judgment. But the Bible tells us not to rush into judgment. We must not look only at outward appearances or make careless judgments based on the few things immediately visible to us. Instead, we must take our time, carefully examine the whole situation, and seek to understand what the truth really is.

We live in a world saturated with fake news. It is a world filled with misleading information that turns victims into villains and perpetrators into innocent people. How often do we see people who genuinely fought for justice being portrayed as evil? How often do we see people who sincerely tried to live good lives for the Lord being falsely labeled as wicked? When these things happen, we must not rush to judgment based on one or two pieces of information. We must not judge by appearances alone. Rather than making hasty decisions, we need the wisdom to take our time and carefully examine the truth, one piece at a time. We must patiently discern what is true.

Proverbs 18:13 says: “To answer before listening—that is folly and shame.” A person who makes decisions and passes judgment before hearing the whole story is not a wise king. Such a person is a foolish king. We must remember this.

So what should our prayer be today? It should be something like this: “Lord, please give us wisdom so that we may make righteous judgments. Do not allow us to become foolish animals who see a wounded monkey and immediately begin condemning the bull without knowing the whole story.” I believe this is something we must pray for. Especially within our church community, how often do we misunderstand one another and make wrong judgments about one another, eventually causing damage to the entire community? Rather than judging others carelessly and hastily, we must humbly bow before God and ask: “Lord, what is the truth? What is the right path in Your eyes?” As we seek God’s guidance, I pray that all of us will learn to make the kind of judgments that are pleasing to Him.

  1. We Must Walk in Righteousness Because God, the Eternal and Truly Wise King, Will Ultimately Judge Everyone

What is the second lesson we can learn from Proverbs 20:26? The second lesson is this: We must walk in the path of righteousness because God, who is the eternal and truly wise King, will ultimately bring judgment upon everyone.

Perhaps in this world, people can get away with deception. They can pretend to be victims. They can make themselves appear to be innocent people who have suffered injustice, while hiding their own wickedness and disguising their true character. And countless people in this world can be deceived by such stories. Why? Because no one in this world is perfect. No one possesses perfect wisdom. We are all limited in our ability to make judgments.

But there is something we must remember today: There is an eternal God. There is a God who is perfectly wise. And when we stand before His judgment seat, everything will be revealed in detail. We will stand before God completely exposed, as though we were standing naked before Him.

People may judge us by our outward appearance. They may evaluate us according to how much we possess, how much we have accomplished, or how much we can show others. Because of this, the wicked may exaggerate their achievements and possessions, making themselves appear to be good people. They may successfully disguise themselves as righteous people. But what kind of God do we serve? We serve a God who sees deep into the very depths of our hearts. We cannot hide from Him. No matter how much we try to conceal ourselves, we cannot escape His sight. Every one of our sins and every act of wickedness will be fully exposed before God.

So what will our wise God do? He will winnow them out. What will our wise God do? He will crush them as though grinding them with a millstone. That is why we must not be deceived by the applause of people. We must not be carried away by the praise and admiration of others. People may praise us because they do not truly know us. They may fail to see our sins and the evil within us. But when we stand before God, all the filth within us will inevitably be exposed.

And when will that day come? Our Lord tells us that the day will come like a thief in the night. Therefore, we must remember that we could stand before God’s judgment seat at any moment. We must humble ourselves before God, repent of our sins, and make a firm decision to return to the Lord in faith. Whenever we stumble and fall, we must go before the cross of Jesus Christ. We must come to the cross and allow the precious blood of our Lord to wash away all our sins. And once again, we must place ourselves in the mighty hands of God’s grace and learn to live by faith.

May all of us become people who continually practice this kind of faith. I pray this blessing upon all of you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
