You Are Not Alone: God’s 7,000 and the Still, Small Voice

Elijah—a great prophet, a prophet of power—fell into severe burnout. Why did such a great prophet, who believed in God and experienced His power firsthand, go through this level of burnout? There must have been several reasons, but if we consider just a few, the first is likely the persistent, unyielding nature of evil.

If one experiences an astonishing miracle where fire falls from heaven and consumes the sacrifice on the altar—if one experiences such a powerful work of God—we would naturally imagine that the forces of evil would raise their hands, surrender, and give up. Isn’t that so? When a prophet proves with such miraculous power and authority that the god Baal is false and that the Lord alone is the true God, we naturally expect everyone to surrender, bow down before God, repent, and return to Him.

Yet, what was the reality Elijah faced? The reality he encountered was Queen Jezebel, who did not budge in the slightest. He thought, “Surely she will surrender now; surely she will fall to her knees; surely she will throw up her hands in complete defeat.” Instead, Jezebel remained completely unmoved, raising her voice even louder and vowing to kill Elijah. Facing such a reaction, all the strength drained right out of Elijah’s heart. “What more on earth am I supposed to do? I thought this would be enough…” Standing before a woman so stubborn that nothing could move her, Elijah’s heart was suddenly filled with despair. Isn’t that how it feels?

When we raise our children and do everything in our power to help them return to the right path and live according to God’s Word, only to realize that no remedy seems to work, despair sets in. When we face a severe illness and try every good medicine, new treatment, and medical method available, yet the disease remains entirely unyielding, our hearts inevitably collapse. Prophet Elijah’s heart felt the exact same way. His strength left him. “Ah, is it truly impossible?” In the end, he became discouraged and fell into total burnout.

How can we prevent such despair during burnout? If there is a way to overcome that kind of despair, what would it be? We must accept it as it is—we must say, “That’s just how it is.”

What is the nature of evil? We often take evil far too lightly. We underestimate the power of evil, thinking, “If I do this much, evil will retreat,” or “If I show this much zeal, it will just surrender and run away.” But evil is not that easy to deal with. What is evil like? Evil is characterized by looking as though it will never budge. When God calls us, He does not send us against an opponent that can be defeated by a couple of casual attempts or a small burst of passion.

Think back to when Moses stood before Pharaoh. Moses brought ten plagues upon Pharaoh, and how terrifying was each one of those plagues? Every time a plague struck, it looked as though the land of Egypt might be completely destroyed and ruined. In the midst of those overwhelming disasters poured out on Egypt, Pharaoh seemed ready to surrender. He appeared to beg for his life. People might have thought, “Ah, now Pharaoh has completely given up! Now we will finally be set free!” But were they set free right away? As soon as a little time passed, Pharaoh acted as if nothing had happened, forgot everything, and returned even stronger to his hardened state. Facing such a Pharaoh, it was easy to lose heart.

Yet, what is that? That is the very nature of evil and the stubborn power of sin. When will evil completely surrender? Evil will raise its hands in total surrender only when it stands before the final judgment seat of God.

While we live in this world, evil often seems defeated, only to reappear again and again. Realizing that evil naturally digs in its heels like this, we should not despair when our hard work seems to bear no visible fruit. Instead of sinking into hopelessness, we must accept that “evil naturally possesses this attribute,” and put our hope in God.

The Psalmist sang in Psalm 42:5:

“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”

I gain immense comfort when I look at the life of Jesus. Even before our Lord—who preached God’s Word with such vivid life, performed miracles, demonstrated divine power, and displayed all kinds of incredible works—not everyone surrendered or bowed down. In the very presence of Jesus, the Pharisees and scribes remained hardened in heart and continually rejected Him. They stayed obstinate even before the words of Jesus. When I realize that, I think to myself, “If people rejected Jesus’ words, of course it’s natural if they don’t listen when someone like me preaches. It’s only natural that shouting all day achieves nothing on its own.” With a clear understanding of the nature of evil, remembering that it does not crumble easily, may we steel our hearts and stand victorious in our spiritual warfare.

Secondly, what was another reason Elijah suffered burnout? It was because he thought, “I am the only one left.”

In 1 Kings 19:14, Prophet Elijah laments to God:

“He said, ‘I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.'”

Who falls into despair? Who becomes discouraged and suffers burnout? It is often those who are exceptionally zealous. People with no passion have no reason to experience burnout in the first place. But for those who have a deep, fervent zeal for the Lord and give their absolute best, burnout can easily strike—especially when the thought takes root: “I am the only one left.” When you look around and see only enemies, with no one to help you, feeling entirely isolated brings deep despair. Elijah’s heart likely felt that exact isolation.

He had fought against the prophets of Baal and labored so zealously for the Lord, yet it felt as though no one was standing with him. It was lonely and terribly painful. But remarkably, God answered him in 1 Kings 19:18:

“Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

To our human eyes, it often feels like we are completely alone, struggling by ourselves. But in truth, we are not alone. How many were there? God declared that He had preserved seven thousand.

When we serve the Lord in the church, it sometimes feels as though we are the only ones doing any work. Have you ever felt that way? It feels like everyone else leaves a mess and you are the only one cleaning up; no one else joins in evangelism and you are out there alone; no one else is praying and you are praying by yourself. You give your all to serve, hoping someone will join in, encourage you, and labor alongside you, yet no one helps and it feels like the entire burden has been placed solely on your shoulders. That is when despair creeps into our hearts.

However, we must lift our eyes and see that there are seven thousand. In reality, we are not alone; in places we do not even know, countless others are laboring, sacrificing, and serving the Lord just as we are.

When I attend retreats for pastors hosted by the presbytery, or gatherings for church planters hosted by the general assembly, many pastors receive immense comfort and strength before returning to their ministries. The same happens at retreats for pastors’ spouses. They return home greatly refreshed. Why? Because they realize, “I thought I was the only one going through this, but there are others just like me.” Discovering that others are laboring and striving in the exact same way brings profound grace, comfort, and renewed courage to serve once again.

What we must remember is this: in the very moment we feel utterly alone, we must lift our eyes of faith. Even if we cannot see it with our physical eyes, we must believe. What must we believe? That across the world, there are countless people who love God standing together with us.

Why is our weekly corporate worship time so precious? Throughout the week, we are scattered in our respective places—in our homes, workplaces, and daily routines. As Christians living scattered in the world, we sustain many wounds. We face ridicule from worldly people, suffer unfair treatment simply for believing, and endure severe hardships. But on Sunday, all those people gather together in one place. We worship together and praise the Lord together. Though we felt alone during the week, being surrounded by fellow believers who worship and praise alongside us brings joy, delight, and deep comfort.

That is why, as we listen to God’s Word, sing praises, and pray together during worship, we receive strength, courage, and power. Isn’t that so? It truly is. How grateful we are for the fellow believers worshiping right beside us! Let us turn to the person next to us and say: “Thank you so much for worshiping here beside me.”

Who is the person next to you? They are one of the seven thousand!

When the world seems pitch-dark and you feel completely alone, remember that even when unseen, God has established a faith community right here so we can walk this journey together. We must remember that we are never alone.

When Jesus was hanging on the cross, He looked down at His disciples and uttered one of His Seven Last Words. In John 19:27, He said to the disciple:

“Then he said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother!’ And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.”

The reason Jesus said, “Behold, your mother!” was so that when He bore the cross and was no longer physically present with them, the disciples—who had relied entirely on Him—would not feel abandoned, lost, or distraught. Instead of wandering in confusion like a dog chasing a chicken, they were to take care of his mother and live together as a family. The disciples were to become one. The church, as a community, was called to gather, pray, praise God together, and build up a fellowship of faith.

I also believe that when Jesus was on the cross, God specially prepared one person to comfort Him. As Jesus hung on the cross, He was utterly alone. His disciples had all fled, soldiers pierced Him with spears and tormented Him, and the surrounding crowd spat and hurled insults at Him. Bearing the entire weight of the world’s sin alone on that cross, Jesus endured agonizing pain. In that moment, He cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

It seemed as though God did not even answer, leaving Jesus cast into absolute loneliness and overwhelming agony. Yet, I believe God granted Jesus one piece of comfort: the criminal hanging beside Him turned to Jesus and said, “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Seeing that criminal, Jesus surely received immense comfort and strength.

Therefore, we must remember that God has given us companions and preserved seven thousand who have not bowed their knees. In difficult and painful moments, we must hold fast to God’s grace and His provision of those seven thousand.

Furthermore, what must we do? We ourselves must become part of that seven thousand for others. If someone among us stumbles on the path of faith, falls, or sinks into despair like Elijah, we must not ignore them or critically think, “Why do they lack faith? What’s wrong with them?” Instead, we must reach out with warm hands of love, encourage them, and let them know, “I am right here beside you,” becoming the kind of faith companions who restore their strength.

I often receive great comfort and strength myself. Whenever I preach at other churches or conduct seminars, young pastors whom I don’t know personally often approach me quietly and say, “Pastor, thank you for always speaking the truth faithfully.” Whenever I give lectures at seminaries, students come up afterward and say, “Thank you for proclaiming the true Word of God in times like these.” Hearing those words brings me unbelievable comfort and strength.

When I teach what I have realized from God’s Word, those accustomed to conventional ways sometimes press me, asking why I speak this way, causing no small amount of hardship. If I stayed silent, there would be no trouble at all. But because it is God’s Word, I study it carefully and proclaim its true meaning. Doing so often brings pressure and difficulty, which can be painful. Yet, discovering people here and there who say, “Thank you, Pastor, for making God’s Word clear,” gives me immense comfort. And when I reflect on it, I realize that I, too, must have given them comfort and strength. In this way, we become sources of comfort, strength, and power to one another.

When and where can we experience the living God? It is not necessarily in grand, spectacular events.

1 Kings 19:11–12 says:

“And he said, ‘Go out and stand on the mount before the LORD.’ And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.”

We often think that God’s work appears only when fire flashes from heaven, supernatural phenomena occur, or thunderous events shatter the silence. But that is not so. Remembering that God abides with us in a still, small voice, may we open our eyes and ears of faith today.

May we discover God’s wondrous grace and love within His gentle whisper, and walk faithfully on the path of faith. Even if great enemies block our way and overwhelming circumstances loom before us to cause despair, let us not be intimidated, distressed, or hopeless. Instead, remembering the God who loves us and gives us strength, may we all rise up in faith.
