Today, we take a look at Proverbs 20:24. Who does it say directs a person’s steps? Do they depend on ourselves? Proverbs 20:24 teaches us that a person’s steps are not up to oneself, but are from the Lord.

Does it feel that way to you, or not? Are you not so sure? Have you decided not to answer because you feel you know nothing at all?

Yes, it often seems as though we think, judge, decide, and carry out everything according to our own desires. Yet, as we walk in faith, we frequently discover the truth that it is God who has guided and accomplished all things behind the scenes.

Scripture is filled with stories that demonstrate this very truth.

First, consider the story of Joseph. Joseph’s brothers hated him, envied him, and harbored such intense animosity that they plotted to kill him, eventually selling him to Midianite traders. But when they sold him out of hatred, could they have ever known that this action would ultimately lead to Joseph becoming the prime minister of Egypt—the highest official under Pharaoh? Could they have even imagined it? Could they have anticipated it even in their dreams?

They could not have foreseen it at all. Yet God not only established Joseph as the prime minister of Egypt, but also used him to rescue his entire family from a severe famine that could have wiped them out. This was a monumental work that Joseph’s brothers could never have anticipated or dreamed of. Who brought all of this to pass? God planned it and guided everything through His divine providence.

To give another example, Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the river to bathe and rescued a baby inside a floating basket. Moved with compassion, she brought him up as her own. Could she have ever imagined, even in her dreams, that this baby would eventually become the deliverer of Israel? Surely not. God raised Moses through the hands of that princess, and He used Moses to deliver the nation of Israel. This serves as a vivid demonstration of today’s proverb: who directs a person’s steps? It is the Lord God who guides them.

Consider also Samson, who married a Philistine woman. Was it acceptable for a man of Judah—an Israelite—to marry an uncircumcised Philistine woman? Absolutely not. It was impossible; religiously speaking, it was something that should never have occurred. Furthermore, God had spoken through an angel that Samson was to be set apart as a Nazirite from childhood. For Samson, who was called to live a holy life, to marry a Gentile, uncircumcised Philistine woman was utterly unacceptable. How frustrated and heart-broken his parents must have been as they watched this unfold!

Yet where did all of this come from? Judges 14:4 teaches us that it was from the Lord: “His father and mother did not know that it was from the Lord, for he was seeking an opportunity against the Philistines. At that time the Philistines ruled over Israel.”

This does not mean Samson’s behavior was right. His choice was wrong, and the marriage he chose was a mistake. Nevertheless, the Book of Judges shows that even through such wrong choices, God carries out His providence and fulfills His will to deliver the nation of Israel.

Furthermore, the nation of Israel (Judah) was eventually brought down by the Babylonian Empire. Jerusalem fell, the temple was destroyed, worship was halted, and the king and the people were dragged away to Babylon in a horrific calamity. It was a tragic event that everyone wished had never happened. Yet it did not happen by mere bad luck; God brought it to pass. In fact, when God referred to Babylon, He sometimes called them His servant or messenger, showing that He used Babylon to accomplish His purpose.

The ultimate event demonstrating that human plans do not originate from man, but from the Lord God, is the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

When Jesus was crucified, Judas Iscariot was driven by greed for money and committed the shameful act of betraying Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Governor Pilate, yielding to public pressure, made a decision contrary to the spirit of Roman law and handed Jesus over to be crucified. The Jewish religious leaders of that time, seeking to preserve their own status and privilege, stirred up the crowd to crucify Him.

Did this happen by mere chance? Through what providence was it accomplished? When we reflect on how the crucifixion of Jesus—the event to save humanity—took place within God’s eternal plan, His promise, and His covenant of grace, we cannot help but acknowledge the truth of Proverbs 20:24.

However, we must not misunderstand this passage.

Some people, realizing that regardless of human choices, a person’s steps are directed by the Lord and guided by God, come to a flawed conclusion: “If that’s the case, then it doesn’t matter what we do.”

Have you met people like that? You may have often heard young people express this idea: “If God’s will and providence are going to be fulfilled no matter what I do or choose, what difference does it make for me? Whether I live righteously or wickedly, God directs my steps, so it doesn’t matter how I live.” Is it right to think this way? Absolutely not.

It is true that God’s ultimate will will be accomplished regardless of the choices we make. Whether we obey or disobey, whether we live righteously or wickedly, God’s good and perfect will will surely be fulfilled through His providence.

This is precisely what the story of Joseph’s brothers shows us. If Joseph’s brothers had not sold him, would it have been impossible for God to save Jacob’s family? If they had not sold him, would God’s plan to save humanity during the seven years of severe famine have failed? Not at all. Whether Joseph’s brothers sold him or not, God’s good purpose would have come to pass. Salvation during the famine would still have occurred, and God’s intent to protect Jacob’s household would still have been fulfilled.

The same applies to Pharaoh. Even if Pharaoh had not made Joseph prime minister, or if he had ignored Joseph’s words, God’s good purpose would surely have been accomplished.

That is why Jesus said in Matthew 26:24: “The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

We cannot say that we were saved simply because Judas Iscariot was there to betray Jesus into being crucified. Even if Judas had not betrayed Him, God’s work of salvation through the cross would have been accomplished. Whatever choice Judas made, God’s good will would prevail.

Yet this does not mean that whatever choice we make is acceptable. Depending on the choices we make, we may bring about a blessed outcome or a cursed one.

What kind of choices should we make? May you make choices that bring blessing. Instead of evil choices, we must choose what is good. Rather than taking on a villainous role like Judas Iscariot, we should choose a good role and pray to be used as good instruments in the process of God fulfilling His will. We must be instruments used by God’s gracious hand.

We must not be deceived by outcomes alone.

Church historians sometimes share an ironic finding: when researching the countless church splits throughout history, they discovered, surprisingly, that those divisions often led to church revival. Although there were painful seasons of conflict and division, the church was not destroyed; instead, even amidst splitting and scattering, revival occurred and the gospel spread. Just as the early Jerusalem church was scattered through persecution and thereby carried the gospel to the world, research shows that church growth sometimes occurred following division.

Does that mean we should encourage divisions and fight more often?

No. Despite church divisions and human weaknesses, God loved the church and humanity, bringing about revival and growth even through those times. Yet how many severe side effects occurred along the way? In the midst of fighting, countless believers lost their faith and stumbled. While there may have been overall numerical growth, many people lost their faith, the church was held in contempt by the world, and non-believers closed their hearts to the gospel.

Furthermore, even if growth occurred following divisions in the past, division today does not lead to growth; rather, it serves as a fatal factor that causes the total decline of the church.

We must not be foolish enough to think that a good outcome justifies the wrong actions we committed.

If burglaries occur frequently, security technology advances to prevent them. But if a captured burglar were to argue, “Security technology advanced because of me, so recognize my contribution,” would that make any sense? It is absurd. If one truly desires the advancement of security technology, one should become a scientist or an inventor, not a thief.

Just because good outcomes eventually emerge after someone causes trouble through evil deeds, we cannot attribute merit to the evil act or the person who committed it.

What, then, is the message of Proverbs 20:24?

When it says, “A man’s steps are from the Lord; how then can man understand his way?”, the intent is to urge us not to lose heart, no matter what situations unfold in this world.

The world we live in often does not turn out the way we desire. There are times when we labor and strive, yet the results are poor. Sometimes evil seems to triumph, lawlessness prevails, and the righteous suffer inexplicably.

Yet, when we find ourselves in such circumstances, we must not despair. When should we refrain from losing heart? When everything seems completely ruined, when we have nothing left. We should rejoice not only when the church grows, flourishes, and serves as an example to many, but also when God leads us along paths of hardship, into seasons of despair, or through dark, unbearable tunnels.

In those moments, we must not fear, but trust and rely on God.

When Joseph was sold as a slave, or when he was falsely accused and imprisoned, he did not lament his fate or give up in despair. Instead, he remembered God’s purpose for him and did his best where he was. In the same way, we must not fear or despair under any circumstances.

If that is the situation we are in, then what should we do? We should do what we can.

God has called us to be the salt and light of the world. In Matthew 5:13–14, Jesus says, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Because God has made us the salt and light of the world, no matter how hopeless the world may seem, we should not become pessimistic or curse the situation. Instead, we should do what we can in that moment.

Even though I cannot change the whole world, I can at least make a difference in the world of the people I encounter and in the area of life where God has placed me.

I may not be able to change the entire world, but I can change the world of the one person I am helping. I can have a positive and godly influence on that person’s life. Even if I cannot change the whole world, I can faithfully fulfill my role as salt and light right where God has placed me.

There is a Korean saying: “No one can defeat the passing of time.” Even the strongest and healthiest person grows weaker as the years go by. That is simply part of life.

It may seem that there is nothing that can overcome the passing of time. But there is one thing that can outlast time: influence.

When we faithfully live as salt and light, even after we are gone, our influence remains.

If we reach out to one person’s life with love and compassion and help transform that person’s life, even after we are gone, the good influence we have had can continue.

Therefore, in situations like these, the first thing we must do is do what we can, and the second is trust God.

We do not know every detail of the path ahead of us, and there are areas of life that we simply cannot control or change. When that happens, rather than becoming discouraged, we must remember that it is the Lord who directs our steps.

We should not despair simply because we do not know how everything will turn out. Instead, we should entrust it to God, trusting that He will protect us and guide us. And regardless of our circumstances, we
