The Kingdom of Heaven (Part 3): What Will Heaven Be Like?
We are now in our third session of thinking together about the Kingdom of God, or the Kingdom of Heaven. Last time, toward the end of our session, we began discussing the question, “Where is the Kingdom of God? Where is heaven?” But we had to stop because we ran out of time.
Since we use expressions such as “the Kingdom of Heaven” and “heavenly kingdom,” we naturally tend to think that it must be somewhere up in the sky. However, as I mentioned last time, when we look at the various expressions used in Scripture, we find two possible ways of understanding where the Kingdom of God is.
The first possibility is that the very world in which we are living now will be transformed. It will become a world like the Garden of Eden of old, or even a world far better than Eden. It will become a new world in which God reigns and exercises His sovereign rule. What is the biblical basis for understanding it this way? First, we need to consider what the word “new” means in the expression “a new heaven and a new earth.” When something old disappears and we replace it with something entirely different, we call the replacement something new. But what about a person? When do we call a person “new”? The person is physically the same, but he repents, is transformed, and is born again. His life becomes completely different. What do we call such a person? We say, “That person has become a new person!” Right? Although the person may look just as he did before, he has been completely transformed and has begun a new life. We call him a “new person.” So we need to ask whether the expression “a new heaven and a new earth” carries a similar meaning.
In Greek, the word neos (νέος) refers to something new in the sense of something recently made or something that replaces what was previously there. However, the Bible frequently uses another word, kainos (καινός). Kainos does not necessarily mean something entirely different that has replaced the old. Rather, it describes something that has become new through a qualitative transformation. It refers to something that has been renewed and changed in its very nature or quality. If the expression “a new heaven and a new earth” carries this meaning, it could mean that this present world will be completely transformed. There will be no more sorrow or suffering, and the world will become a blessed place under God’s rule. In other words, we can understand the Kingdom of God as this very world, completely renewed and transformed.
There are several biblical expressions that support this understanding. What are some examples? In the Lord’s Prayer, which Jesus taught us, we pray, “Your kingdom come.” We do not pray that we will be lifted up and taken into the Kingdom of God. Rather, we pray that God’s Kingdom will come and be established where we are. There are also expressions in Scripture such as “the Kingdom of God has come,” “the Kingdom of God has come upon you,” and “the Kingdom of God will come.” When we consider these expressions, we can understand the Kingdom of God as this present world being completely transformed.
However, there is another possibility. We could understand the Kingdom of God as being somewhere in the heavens, in an unknown and mysterious place beyond our knowledge. What biblical expressions support this understanding? Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you.” Jesus spoke of going somewhere far away to prepare a dwelling place for us. Therefore, we could understand this to mean that God will establish His Kingdom somewhere in the unknown heavenly realm, rather than transforming this present world. Furthermore, in 1 Thessalonians 4, we read: “Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.” This could also be understood to mean that we will leave this world and go somewhere in the heavens, entering the Kingdom of Heaven in that place.
Therefore, when we examine the biblical expressions, we find that both possibilities are present. There is another passage in which Jesus speaks about what will happen when He returns on the last day and God’s judgment comes upon the world. He says: “Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left.” Now, which person goes to heaven? The one who is taken, or the one who is left behind? We cannot say for certain. Why? Because Jesus said that it would be like the days of Noah. In the days of Noah, who was saved? Were those who remained on the earth saved, or those who were swept away by the flood? It was those who remained in the ark who were saved. When Jesus spoke about these things, His disciples asked Him, “Where, Lord?” In other words, where would those people be taken? Jesus answered, “Wherever the corpse is, there the eagles will gather.” Based on this statement, we could interpret the passage to mean that those who remain are the ones who are saved, while those who are taken away are the ones who perish. On the other hand, we could interpret it the opposite way: those who remain are the unsaved, while those who are taken up are the ones who are saved and brought into heaven.
As I have explained, both interpretations are possible. That is why I am not going to insist that one interpretation is definitely correct and the other is wrong. Why? Because I have not been to heaven yet! But I think it is important for us to understand that, biblically speaking, both possibilities can be considered.
Now, does it really matter where heaven is? Not really. Why? Because what is the very essence, the central reality of heaven? It is the place where God is. Heaven is where God is present, where He wipes away our tears, makes right every injustice we have suffered, embraces us, and welcomes us into the loving arms of our Heavenly Father. If this earth is transformed and restored to something like the Garden of Eden, that would be perfectly wonderful. And if the Kingdom of God is established somewhere in a heavenly realm unknown to us, and we go there, that would also be perfectly wonderful. The real question is not, “Where is it?” but rather, “With whom will we be?” With whom will we be? We will be with God. We should remember that the very heart of the Kingdom of God is that God will be with us, wipe away our tears, and bring us into His salvation.
Will There Be Different Rewards in Heaven?
Now, let me ask another question. When we enter heaven, will there be rewards? Let me put the question another way. Of course, there may be rewards. But will the way we have lived our lives on earth determine our rank or status in heaven? Will some people receive many rewards, while others barely make it into heaven and receive very little? In other words, will there be different levels of rewards in heaven?
Those of you who think there will be no differences in rewards, could you explain why you think so? It is not important that you simply repeat what I have said. What matters is that you explain which biblical passages and what scriptural grounds support your conclusion. Otherwise, if someone says, “Our pastor said so,” that could become a serious problem!
Ah, I see. One example is the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard, which Jesus told. In that parable, the owner pays the same wage to those who worked from early morning and those who worked for only one hour. That was the owner’s decision. When we think about this parable, we might conclude that a person who has devoted his entire life to serving God, working hard and making great sacrifices, will receive the same reward as the criminal who was crucified beside Jesus. That criminal had done nothing particularly commendable throughout his life. Yet, at the very last moment, he said to Jesus: “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” We could understand this to mean that both people receive the same reward. That is a reasonable argument based on the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard.
Some of you may think there will be differences in rewards, while others may think there will not be. Someone has just touched on a very important point. What is one of the things that makes life so painful in this world? It is discrimination and inequality. Some people seem to get away with everything, while others suffer terribly even for the smallest mistakes. Some enjoy many privileges, while others have very little. People are constantly compared with one another, and this brings stress, resentment, and suffering. Now, if there are different levels of rewards in heaven, would that really be heaven? Would it not simply be another version of this present world? We have suffered so much because of inequality here on earth. Then, if we arrive in heaven only to be told, “You can sit in a tiny room by the entrance wearing a shabby hat. Just be grateful that you made it into heaven,” would that really feel like heaven to that person? That is a question worth considering.
To be honest, I do not know the definitive answer. I have not been to heaven myself! But we can think about this question from several different angles. First, as someone just mentioned, if there are different ranks and levels in heaven, we might ask whether such a place could truly be heaven.
Second, we need to consider what our achievements and accomplishments on earth will mean when we stand before God in His Kingdom. Let me give you an illustration. Suppose there is an incredibly wealthy billionaire, someone like Elon Musk, with a fortune worth hundreds of billions of dollars. If I give him one dollar, do you think he will be grateful? Or will he simply laugh at me? He will probably laugh. He already has so much money that my one dollar would mean virtually nothing to him.
In a similar way, when we stand before God, our own achievements and accomplishments will amount to very little. Among us, there may be people who have worked extremely hard from early morning, accomplishing far more than someone who worked for only one hour. Perhaps some of us have lived our lives thinking, “At least I am better than that person.” But when we stand before God, what will all our accomplishments amount to? Just one dollar. Compared with the immeasurable love of God, who loved us so much that He gave His own Son to die on the cross for us, all our devotion, hard work, and effort amount to virtually nothing. It is like someone sitting inside a moving train and pushing against the walls, trying to make the train go faster. Does the train move faster because of that person’s efforts? Of course not!
In the presence of God, our own achievements and merits have no real significance. The moment we enter the gates of heaven, we will have no choice but to confess: “I am nothing. The grace of God, who saved a wretch like me, is so great and so amazing!” That will be the only song we can sing. So, even if there are rewards in heaven, and even if there are some differences according to what we have done on earth, those differences will be like a drop in the ocean compared with the immeasurable love of God. In the presence of God’s overwhelming grace, we will discover that our own deeds and accomplishments have no value to boast about.
However, when someone asks whether there will be absolutely no differences in rewards in heaven, it is difficult to give a definite answer and simply say, “No, there will be none.” Why? Because we tend to judge everything according to the way things work in this present world. We might think, “How could a place with different levels of rewards possibly be heaven?” But it is also possible that God may recognize and praise the efforts we made on earth and give us different rewards in a way that does not turn heaven into a place of dissatisfaction or jealousy. From our present perspective, that may seem impossible.
Nevertheless, the Bible speaks in several places about God rewarding His people. Scripture frequently uses expressions such as, “Each person will be repaid according to what he has done.” That is why we cannot answer this question too casually. We need to be careful.
At the very least, however, one thing is certain. Even if we suffered injustice in this world, even if we worked hard and made sacrifices that nobody recognized, even if people mocked us because our efforts did not produce visible results according to the standards of this world, God will regard all our labor and devotion as precious and acknowledge them. Yes, there will be the comfort of the Lord. People in this world may look only at our visible results and outward circumstances and say, “That person is worthless. He has accomplished nothing. There is no fruit in his life.” But God will recognize our labor and devotion. He will gently encourage us and say: “You really worked hard. You truly loved Me.” God will acknowledge and reward our efforts and devotion. In that sense, we can be certain that there will be rewards from God.
So, will there be rewards or not? What I am saying is that it is difficult to give a simple, one-sided answer. It may be easier and more comfortable to give a clear-cut answer, but the truth is not always that simple. I believe that God will certainly recognize our labor and devotion. He will wipe away our tears and acknowledge everything we have done for Him. But He will do so in a way that does not produce dissatisfaction because of different levels of rewards. Rather, He will lead us to praise, thank, and rejoice in His amazing grace.
We should not imagine, as many people do, that the things we accomplish in this world will determine how much territory we possess or how much authority we exercise in heaven. We should not think of it as though our earthly performance determines the size of our heavenly mansion or the crown we will wear. It is not like taking the college entrance examination, where staying awake for one more hour today determines whether you pass or fail. Nor should we imagine that the more we devote ourselves to God, the larger our heavenly mansion will be. Rather, we should firmly remember that God graciously rewards us and recognizes our labor and devotion.
The doctrine of rewards in heaven is sometimes seriously misused. In particular, cults and people with cult-like tendencies may exploit this teaching to burden believers, manipulate them, and make them work excessively. We must be careful not to allow this doctrine to be abused in such a way. Our devotion and hard work should never be treated as though we were taking an entrance examination for heaven.
However, when we read the Bible, we do find many expressions that seem to suggest considerable differences in rewards in heaven. For example, what expressions do we find? Jesus used the expressions “the greatest in the kingdom of heaven” and “the least in the kingdom of heaven.” Let us look together at Matthew 5:19:
“Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
When we read this passage, it may seem that there are great people and lesser people in heaven. We find a similar expression in Matthew 18:1–4:
“At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, ‘Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ And calling to Him a child, He put him in the midst of them and said, ‘Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.'”
Because of passages like these, we might get the impression that some people will receive many rewards in heaven while others will receive fewer. But does the expression “greatest or least in the kingdom of heaven” actually mean that there will be people of different ranks and sizes within heaven as a place?
No. These expressions do not refer to different positions within heaven as a physical location. Rather, they mean “from the perspective of the Kingdom of God” or “according to the values of God’s Kingdom.” Who is considered great in this world? Those who live according to the standards of this world may appear to be great. But when God’s Kingdom comes and His reign and rule are fully established, who will be considered great? The one who humbles himself. The one who faithfully teaches God’s Word without adding to it or taking anything away from it.
Then who is considered least? A proud person who refuses to humble himself will be considered least under God’s rule. Likewise, someone who does not faithfully teach God’s Word but changes it according to his own wishes will be considered least in God’s Kingdom. Now, will such a person, the one who is called least, enter heaven or not? He will not enter. That is exactly what Jesus says in Matthew 18:3: “Unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus is not saying that such a person will enter heaven but occupy a lower position there. He is saying that such a person will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
Therefore, the expressions “greatest and least in the kingdom of heaven” do not mean that people of different ranks will be mixed together within heaven as a place. Rather, when God’s reign is established, those who humble themselves and submit to His rule are considered great. Those who refuse to do so, who are called least, will not enter the Kingdom at all. In other words, these passages are not teaching that there will be different levels of rewards within heaven.
To summarize, we can be certain that God will recognize our labor and devotion, repay us according to what we have done, and commend us. However, this will not result in dissatisfaction because of different levels of rewards in heaven. Instead, we will realize that, compared with God’s amazing grace, we have nothing of our own to offer Him. We will be filled with gratitude. We will simply confess: “Even if I had ten mouths, I would have nothing to say before the Lord, because a sinner like me has been welcomed into His presence. Everything is by God’s grace!”
Therefore, it is not appropriate to emphasize different levels of heavenly rewards in a way that constantly makes believers anxious and pressures them to work harder. We should certainly look forward to being acknowledged and comforted by God in heaven. But we should be cautious about insisting that there will be enormous differences in the rewards we receive. On the last day, God will wipe away all the injustice we have suffered and all the pain of being unrecognized. When we stand before Him, our hearts will be filled with unending praise, thanksgiving, and wonder.
Will Heaven Be Enjoyable or Boring?
Now, let me ask another question. Will heaven be an exciting place, or will it be boring? We do not know exactly, but you have probably heard people say from time to time, “I would rather go to an exciting hell than a boring heaven.”
But heaven is not a place where we have nothing to do and therefore become bored. It is a place that is new, joyful, and wonderful every single day. The last time our presbytery went on a trip to Busan, we visited a place called Arte Museum. It is an exhibition space where artworks are created using LED lighting and digital visual effects. When we entered the first room, we saw a magnificent image of a huge bridge. Then we moved into the next room. Did it become less interesting? Not at all! Another amazing and fascinating scene appeared before us. When we entered the third room, it was decorated in a completely different way. Throughout the entire visit, everything was fascinating and enjoyable.
Heaven is not a place where, after looking around once, we say, “Well, I’m bored now. Let’s go home.” It is a place overflowing with joy and happiness every single day. The Bible describes heaven as a place where praise remains forever. Does that mean we will be forced to sing hymns all the time, even when we get tired of singing? Of course not! It means that we will never stop being amazed. Heaven is a state in which wonder and praise continue forever. Just imagine how wonderful and joyful that will be! Heaven is where we will find complete happiness and satisfaction in God. There will be no sorrow, and our joy will be made complete. That is what heaven is.
Who Will Be Sitting at the Gates of Heaven?
Who will be sitting at the gates of heaven? Many people imagine that Peter will be standing at the entrance, guarding the gates. Because Jesus said to Peter, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven,” people sometimes imagine that Peter has the authority to decide who may enter and who may not.
But that is simply a popular image or a story people tell. When Jesus gave Peter the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, the important point was not Peter himself as an individual. Rather, it was the faith that Peter confessed: the true faith that acknowledges Jesus alone as our Lord and God and humbly submits to Him. The meaning is that those who possess such genuine faith will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. It does not mean that Peter will literally be standing at the entrance as a gatekeeper.
Will Our Family Relationships Continue in Heaven?
When we enter heaven, will our family relationships on earth be restored? Or will those relationships be completely broken and become irrelevant? We can understand this in terms of both continuity and discontinuity.
First, there will be continuity. When we enter the Kingdom of God, we do not become completely different people. Our individual personalities, memories, and relationships will remain. We will recognize and remember one another as parents and children, as husbands and wives, and as people who shared our lives on earth. In that sense, there will be continuity.
At the same time, there will also be discontinuity. Our sinful nature, weaknesses, selfishness, sickness, and the limitations of our earthly relationships will all be removed. Jesus said: “For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.” This does not mean that we will lose all personal relationships. Rather, it means that we will enter a much higher dimension of love that goes beyond the exclusive family relationships we experience in this world. In this world, our love tends to be concentrated on particular family members, often in an exclusive way. But in heaven, that love will be transformed and expanded to embrace all the saints. All believers will become one family, sharing love together in a perfect community. Therefore, you do not need to worry about entering heaven because of your earthly relationships or conflicts.
We can also see this in the event of the Transfiguration in Matthew 17. When Moses and Elijah appeared, the disciples recognized them. This shows that even though our appearance will be transformed, our personal identity will remain. We also see something similar in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, where the people involved recognize one another.
Then what about our memories in heaven? Will they disappear? No. Our memories will remain, and this is part of the continuity we have been discussing. That is why our hearts will overflow with gratitude as we realize just how great God’s grace is in saving sinners like us. Consider the resurrected Jesus. The marks of the nails remained in His hands, but they were no longer signs of shame. They had become marks of victory and glory. In a similar way, our sorrows and wounds will be purified. They will no longer be sources of suffering or trauma. Instead, they will become reasons for us to praise God and give thanks to Him. At present, we see as though looking into a dim mirror. But then, we will see face to face. We will know fully.
Now, someone might raise another question: “What will happen to our memories and sorrow concerning family members who were not saved?” In this world, our hearts can easily become distorted because we are often guided more by our personal affections than by justice. But in heaven, our hearts will be perfectly aligned with God’s righteousness and justice. We cannot know exactly how God will comfort our hearts and resolve this matter. But we can trust that God will transform our hearts and bring us to a place of complete victory and peace.
Next Week’s Topic
Next week, we will consider the question: “When a person dies, where does he or she go immediately? Does the person go straight to heaven or straight to hell?” That will be our topic for the next session.
Now, if you have any questions about what we have discussed today, or anything related to the Bible or everyday life, please feel free to ask.
Questions and Answers
Question from the audience: What does it mean when we sing about taking off our crowns and laying them before the Lord?
When we take off our golden crowns and cast them down before the Lord, it is an act of acknowledging that we have no authority or merit of our own and confessing that God alone is the One who has the right to rule over us. It means that I am not the master. God is the Lord of the entire universe, and therefore I completely submit myself to Him.
A crown symbolizes authority, sovereignty, and honor. To lay down our crowns before God, the King of kings, means that we surrender all our authority and submit ourselves to Him. The essential point is not whether we literally possess a crown or not. It is the attitude of complete surrender and obedience to God.
Therefore, we should also learn to experience the Kingdom of God while we are still living in this world. Even in our families, the Kingdom of God is established not when we simply do whatever we feel like doing or insist on having things our own way, but when we submit ourselves to God’s Word. When we obey the Lord’s teaching to understand one another, show warmth and love, and refrain from responding with anger, the beauty of God’s Kingdom becomes present in that place.
Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is in your midst.” When we submit ourselves to God’s reign and rule, we can experience the joy of heaven even here on earth. My hope is that all of us will learn to practice and experience the life of heaven, beginning right here and now, as we live under the gracious rule of God.
