우리가 에베소서의 말씀을 계속해서 살펴보고 있는 가운데 있는데요. 오늘 읽은 말씀은 그래도 좀 이해하기가 괜찮죠? 네, 지난주 본문보다는 이해하는 것이 조금 쉬웠을 거라고 생각이 듭니다. 하지만 좀 더 잘 이해하기 위해서 지난번처럼 제가 설명을 덧붙인 것을 한번 소개해 드리고 싶습니다. 한번 보시면 왼쪽에 있는 것은 우리가 사용하고 있는 개역개정 성경의 내용이고요. 오른쪽에 있는 내용은 거기에다가 제가 설명을 덧붙여서 이해하기 쉽도록 풀이한 내용이라고 할 수가 있는데, 한번 비교하면서 오늘 본문의 말씀이 무엇을 말하려고 하고 있는지 한번 이해했으면 좋겠습니다.
14절부터 이렇게 바울 사도가 이야기를 하고 있습니다. 그러니까 하나님의 신비한 비밀을 깨닫게 되었으니까, 앞절 말씀에서 지난주에 읽은 그 본문 말씀에서 하나님의 신비한 비밀을 깨닫게 되었다고 하는 이야기를 썼는데, 그러니까 거기에 근거해서 이런 이야기를 하고 있는 겁니다. 하늘 아버지께 내가 무릎을 꿇는 거야, 기도하는 거야. 내가 엎드려 기도하는 대상은 그 하나님인데, 그 우리 하나님이 누구인가? 하나님이 누구냐 하면 모든 민족이 이름을 얻게 된 것은, 즉 존재하게 된 것은 다 하나님 때문이잖아. 땅에 있는 민족이건 하늘에 있는 민족이건, 그러니까 지금 존재하는 민족이건 이미 역사에서 사라져서 이 세상에서는 흔적도 볼 수 없게 된 민족이건.
16절 말씀. 나는 그 모든 민족을 있게 하신 그 하나님께 나는 이렇게 기도하고 있어. 하나님께서 너희에게 속사람의 강건함을 주시라고 기도하고 있지. 육체야 병들 수 있지, 육체야 무너질 수 있어. 하지만 속사람은 약해져서는 안 돼. 하나님의 영광의 풍성함을 따라 우리의 속사람이 강건하게 하시라고 기도하는 거야. 하나님은 정말 그 영광이 찬란하잖아, 풍성하잖아. 너희도 그렇게 속사람이 강건해지기를 기도하는 것인데 성령님을 통하여서 강건하게 하시라고 기도하고 있는 거야. 우리를 강건하게 만드시는 분은 성령님이시니까.
그 결과 그리스도께서 너희 마음에 거주하시기를 기도하고 있어. 믿음으로 그리스도를 받아들여서 거주하게 하시는 거지. 그래서 그리스도께서 원하시는 대로의 삶을 살아야 해. 그래야 그리스도께서 마음에 거하시는 것이니까. 그래서 너희 사랑 안에서 뿌리가 깊게 뻗고 터가 굳건하게 되기를 기도하고 있어. 그래야 그 어떤 시련이 닥쳐도 흔들리지 않을 수 있으니까. 그리하여 너희가 다른 모든 성도들과 함께, 다른 성도들이 그런 것처럼 깨달을 수 있게 되기를 기도하고 있지. 그리스도의 사랑이 얼마나 넓은지 얼마나 긴지 얼마나 높고 얼마나 깊은지를 깨닫게 되기를 기도하고 있어. 우리가 물건을 알려면 너비와 길이와 높이와 깊이를 다 재어보고 알아야 되듯이 그리스도의 사랑도 온전히 맛보아 이해하게 되기를 바라는 거야. 우리의 지식을 초월하는 그리스도의 사랑에, 그리스도의 사랑을 알게 되길. 그러면 결국 하나님, 너희가 하나님의 충만함에 이르기까지 충만해질 거야.
우리가 구하는 것이나 생각하는 것 이상으로 더 풍성하게 행하실 하나님께 영광이 무궁하길. 하나님께서는 우리 안에서 역사하시는 능력으로 행하시는 분이시니까 바로 그 하나님께 영광이 대대로 영원무궁하기를 기도하고 있어. 그래서 교회 안에서 하나님의 영광이 나타나길, 다시 말하면 그리스도이신 예수님 안에서 나타나길. 교회는 그리스도의 몸이니까. 아멘이라고 하는 내용입니다.
어느 정도 이해가 되셨습니까? 쭉 이야기하고 있는데, 오늘 본문의 말씀은 바울 사도가 기도하고 있는 기도의 제목들을 나열한 것이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 다음 그림을 한번 보면 무엇을 기도했는지를 알 수가 있는데요. 다섯 가지 일을 이야기하고 있습니다.
첫 번째는 속사람이 강건하게 되기를 위해서 기도하고 있는 것이고, 그리스도께서 너희 마음에 거주하기를 위해서 기도하고 있는 것이고, 너희 믿음이 사랑 가운데서 뿌리가 내리길 터가 굳건하게 되기 위해서 기도하고 있는 것이고, 그리스도의 사랑의 사랑을 정말 잘 알아가게 되기를 위해서 기도하며, 마지막으로 하나님의 충만하심에 이르기까지 이르기를 기도하고 있는 내용. 이 5가지의 기도의 제목을 말하고 있는 본문이 오늘 본문의 말씀이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 하지만 이 5가지의 기도의 제목이 그냥 맹목적인 그냥 단순한 나열이 아니라, 사실은 이 5가지 기도의 제목이 사실은 크게 묶어 볼 수 있다고 생각합니다. 제일 크게 묶어서 말한다면 가장 하나의 제목으로 말한다면 속사람의 강건함을 위해서 기도하는 거죠. 바울 사도가 기도하는 기도의 제목이 그겁니다. 성령으로 속사람이 강건하게 되기를 기도합니다.
그래서 그리스도의 마음이, 그리스도께서 너희 마음에 거주하시길 바라고 사랑 가운데 뿌리가 내리길 바라고 그리스도의 사랑을 알게 되길 바라면서, 그래서 그 기도의 궁극적인 목적이 무엇인가. 우리가 어린아이의 모습이 아니라 하나님의 충만하심에 이르기까지 성장하기를 원하는 기도의 제목을 기도한 것, 그러니까 속사람의 강건함을 위해서 기도한 것이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 내용이 전체적으로 그림이 그려지십니까? 수준이 대단합니다. 오늘 본문의 말씀을 우리가 살펴보면서 바울 사도가 에베소 교회를 생각하면서 기도하고 있는 그 기도의 제목을 생각하면서 먼저 우리가 주목해 보아야 할 것이 하나 있는데요. 그것은 바로 바울 사도가 그 무엇보다도 속사람의 강건함을 위해서 기도했다는 것입니다. 바울 사도가 기도할 때 우리 에베소 교회 성도들의 자녀들이 좋은 대학 갔으면 좋겠어요, 그렇게 기도한 것보다도, 우리 에베소 교회 성도들이 좀 더 건강했으면 좋겠어요, 오래 살았으면 좋겠어요, 질병이 없으면 좋겠어요, 그렇게 기도하는 것보다도, 지금 사업을 하고 있는데 그 사업들이 잘 됐으면 좋겠어요, 그런 기도의 제목을 기도하는 것보다도 바울 사도가 가장 간절하게 기도한 기도의 제목이 있는데 그것은 바로 성도들의 그 속사람의 강건함입니다.
이 점을 우리가 깊이 생각해 보았으면 좋겠어요. 왜냐하면 속사람의 강건함이야말로 그 무엇보다도 중요하기 때문입니다. 그 어떤 것보다도 중요한 것이죠. 물론 이 말씀은 그러니까 우리가 기도할 때 이 세상의 필요를 위해서 기도하는 것은 별로 바람직하지 않다고 말씀드리는 게 아닙니다. 이 세상의 필요를 위해서 기도하는 것은 그것은 좀 저질이다라고 그렇게 말하는 것이라고 할 수는 없습니다. 왜 그럴까요? 바울 사도도 무엇을 위해서 기도했습니까? 병 낫기를 위해서 기도했어요. 바울 사도가 육체의 질병으로 인해서 고통스러울 때 그것을 육체의 가시라고까지 표현했는데, 그 육체의 가시를 좀 하나님 내 몸에서 제거해 주세요, 너무나도 고통스러워서 바울 사도는 열심히 그 병 낫기를 위해서 간절하게 기도했기 때문에 그러니까 병이 낫는 것을 위해서 기도할 필요가 없다고 그렇게 생각할 필요는 없습니다.
오히려 성경의 가르침은 무엇입니까? 너희 중에 병든 자가 있느냐 그는 교회의 장로들을 청할 것이요 그들은 주의 이름으로 기름을 바르며 그를 위하여 기도할지니라고 가르쳐 주고 있기 때문입니다. 뿐만 아니라 바울 사도는 무엇을 위해서 기도했는가. 고통이 없어지게 해달라고 기도했습니다. 고린도후서에 보면 바울 사도의 기도는 무엇이냐 하면 하나님께서 너희에게 있는 그 고통을 제거해 주시고 또 앞으로 고통을 만나지 않게 해달라고 기도하며 고린도 교회에게 그것을 위해서 기도해 달라고 부탁했던 것을 잘 알 수가 있습니다. 무엇보다도 예수님께서는 우리들에게 기도를 가르쳐 주시면서 어떻게 기도하라고 하셨습니까? “오늘 우리에게 일용할 양식을 주시옵고” 기도해라, 양식을 위해서 기도해라, 그렇게 예수님께서 가르쳐 주신 것이죠. 양식만을 위해서 기도하라는 이야기일까요? 그 양식이라고 하는 그 말 속에는 우리의 필요가 다 들어 있어요. 우리의 건강을 위해서 기도해라, 우리가 병 낫기를 위해서 기도해라, 우리의 문제가 있으면 그 문제가 해결되기 위해서 기도해라, 여러 가지 아픔이 있다고 한다면 그 아픔을 위해서 기도해라, 우리의 필요가 있다고 한다면 그 필요를 위해서 기도하라라고 가르쳐 주신 것이 바로 예수님의 기도의 가르침이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다.
그래서 우리가 이 세상을 살아가면서 만나는 어려움이 있을 때마다 우리는 건강을 위해서 기도할 수 있고, 우리 자녀들의 결혼을 위해서 기도할 수 있고, 우리 자녀들이 좋은 대학에 가기 위해서 기도할 수 있고, 우리가 사업을 하면서 그 사업을 위해서 아침마다 기도할 수 있을 것이라고 믿습니다. 하지만 오늘 본문의 말씀을 우리가 함께 생각하면서 주목해 보아야 할 것은 우리의 기도가 거기서만 머물러버리면 안 된다고 하는 것입니다. 우리가 기도할 때 무엇보다도 더 기도해야 될 기도의 제목이 있는데 그것은 바로 우리의 속사람의 강건함을 위해서 기도할 필요가 있다는 것을 오늘 우리가 묵상할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 우리의 속사람이라고 하는 게 무엇일까요? 우리의 겉사람은 무엇이고 속사람은 무엇이죠? 우리의 겉사람이 우리 육신으로 이루어진, 우리가 만질 수 있고 우리가 대화할 수 있는 우리의 육신을 가진 이 존재가 우리의 겉사람이라고 한다면 우리의 속사람이라고 하는 것은 무엇일까요? 정확하게 설명하기는 좀 어렵지만 우리의 속사람이라고 하는 것은 우리가 움직이고 생활하고 결정하고 할 수 있는 그 모든 것을 결정하는 존재를 아마 속사람이라고 말할 수 있지 않을까 싶습니다. 우리는 정신적인 활동을 하는데요. 지정의(知情意)의 활동을 하게 되는 것이죠.
무엇인가를 알게 되기도 하고 무엇인가를 느끼기도 하고 무엇인가를 의지를 가지고 행하기도 하는데, 그런 지정의의 활동을 하는 주체를 가리켜서 속사람이라고 말할 수가 있을 것 같아요. 그런데 그 속사람이 건강하면 어떻게 됩니까? 어떠한 문제가 닥친다고 해도 크게 문제가 되지 않아요. 우리의 육체는 약해서 무너질 수도 있고 우리의 육체는 때로는 힘들고 어려운 상황에 빠질 수도 있지만, 그러나 우리의 속사람이 강건하다고 하면 그 어떠한 상황 가운데서도 무너지지 않을 수 있기 때문에 속사람의 강건함을 위해서 기도하라 말씀하고 있는 겁니다. 우리 자녀들이 있을 때 우리 자녀들은 우리 자녀들이 이 사회에서 잘 살아가게 만들기 위해서 무엇을 하죠? 교육을 시키는 겁니다. 교육하지 아니하면 우리 아이들이 이 험난한 세상에서 살아가기가 힘들어요. 무엇을 해서 일을 하면서 살아야 될지도 모르고 사람들과의 관계 속에서 어떻게 대화하고 어떻게 예절을 지키고 어떻게 거래를 하고… 그런 이 사회 속에서 구성원으로서 살아가는 법들을 학교에 가서 배워야 그래야 우리가 이 사회에서 잘 살 수 있는 것처럼, 단순히 먹을 것을 주고 육신이 잘 자라게 만드는 것만으로 이 아이를 잘 자라게 만드는 것이 아니라 교육을 받아야 모든 것을 잘 헤쳐 나갈 수 있는 것처럼 우리에게 속사람이라고 하는 것이 있는데, 우리 속사람이 강건해야 우리가 영적으로 승리하는 삶을 살게 될 줄로 믿습니다.
우리나라 속담에 “호랑이에게 물려가도 정신만 차리면 산다”라고 하는 말이 있는데, 이 세상에 어떤 고난이 닥친다고 할지라도 우리의 속사람이 바로 서 있다면, 믿음이 바로 서 있다면 그 어떠한 난관도 승리해 나갈 수 있기 때문에 속사람을 위한, 속사람의 강건함을 위한 기도가 당연하다 할 것입니다. 성경에 보면 수많은 믿음의 사람들이 있는데 그런 믿음의 사람들은 어떻게 승리했는가. 모든 조건이 좋아서 승리한 게 아니에요. 이 세상에 아무런 고난도 없고 아무런 시련도 없고 그냥 탄탄대로가 열렸기 때문에, 꽃길이 열렸기 때문에 그 사람들이 성공의 길로 간 것이 아니야. 오히려 믿음의 사람들이 수많은 어려움을 만났습니다. 시련을 만났어요. 감옥에 갇히기도 했어요. 노예로 억울하게 팔려가기도 했어요. 하지만 그 상황 가운데서 속사람이 강건했던 요셉은 흔들리지 아니하고 하나님 앞에 바로 서 있을 수가 있었던 것이죠. 욥이라고 하는 사람은 자신의 모든 것을 다 잃어버려도 그 환난 가운데서 담대하게 일어설 수가 있었던 것이죠. 다윗도 마찬가지고 다니엘도 마찬가지고 다니엘의 새 친구도 마찬가지고 여호수아와 갈렙도 마찬가지고, 그 어떠한 상황 가운데서 흔들리지 않을 수 있었던 것은 속사람이 강건했기 때문일 것이라고 믿습니다. 그래서 우리가 무엇보다도 더 기도해야 될 기도의 제목이 무엇인가. 속사람의 강건함을 위해서 기도하는 우리 모두가 다 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다.
저는 우리 청년들하고 성경을 가르치면서 우리 청년들이 배우자를 위해서 기도할 때 뭐라고 기도할까를 가르치면서 저는 구체적인 어떤 배우자들의 조건에 대해서 기도하는 것도 중요하지만 그것보다 더 중요한 것이 속사람의 강건함이라고 그렇게 강조해서 가르치곤 합니다. 종종 우리 교계 내에서는 배우자를 선택할 때 배우자를 위한 기도를 어떻게 해야 되는가, 구체적으로 기도하라고 가르치는 것을 많이 들었습니다. 예를 들어서 남편감을 두고서, 신랑감을, 신붓감을 놓고서 기도하는데 어떻게 기도하는가 구체적으로 기도해서 기도하면 하나님께서 응답하신다는 거예요. 그래서 키는 몇 센티, 학교는 최소한 어디, 그리고 직장은 최소한 어디 하면서 그런 조건들을 다 걸고 그것을 위해서 기도하면 결국에는 하나님께서 그런 배우자를 주셨다라고 간증하시는 분들도 많아요. 예전에 어떤 여성 탤런트가 나와서 그렇게 간증하더라고요. 제가 배우자를 위해서 이렇게 이렇게 20개를 놓고 기도했는데 20개를 다 채워주는 좋은 배우자를 만났어요 하면서 간증하는 걸 봤어요. 어떻게 그렇게 만났을까요? 탤런트니까 만나죠. 내가 탤런트가 아니면 그렇게 못 만나는 거야. 그래서 잘 됐나 보다 했는데 나중에 보니까 이혼했더라고요.
저는 어떻게 가르치냐 하면 물론 그렇게 조건들을 놓고서 기도하는 것도 필요하겠지만 아무나 결혼할 수는 없잖아요. 내가 원하는 그런 것들을 놓고 기도하는 것이 중요하지만 그러나 더 중요한 게 있는데 무엇이 더 중요할까요? 하나님께서 나로 하여금 하나님께서 원하시는 짝을 만나게 해주신다면, 하나님 저에게 속사람의 강건함을 허락해 주셔서 어떠한 어려운 일들을 만난다고 할지라도 함께 믿음으로 이겨낼 수 있는 속사람의 강건함을 허락하여 주소서 기도해야 되는 것. 배우자의 단점이 있으면 채워주고 보듬어주고 함께 내가 도와주어서 우리가 함께 성장할 수 있는 가정이 되게 해 주옵소서 그런 마음을 가질 수 있게 해 주옵소서 기도해야 되는 것입니다. 그게 속사람의 강건함을 위한 기도입니다. 하나님께서 내게 어떤 기도의 응답을 주실지 몰라요. 하나님께서는 내가 원하는 대로 주실 수도 있고 주지 않을 수도 있는데, 하나님께서 어떠한 방식대로 응답해 주시든지 간에 하나님께서 내게 주신 배우자라고 한다면 내가 더욱더 그를 사랑할 수 있게 해 주시고, 장점만이 아니라 단점들도 품을 수 있는 능력을 주옵소서. 우리 가정에 사위가 들어오고 우리 가정에 며느리가 들어올 때 그냥 내가 원하는 그 조건대로 다 채워지지 않는다고 할지라도 내가 사랑하고 아끼고 품어 주어서 좋은 가정 만들어 갈 수 있는 좋은 부모가 되게 해 주옵소서 그렇게 기도해야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 이 세상의 미신은 어떻게 가르치나요?
이 세상의 미신은 사람들마다 좋은 짝이 있어서 좋은 짝을 만나면 행복할 것이지만 좋은 짝을 만나지 못하면 불행할 것이니까 좋은 짝을 만나기 위해서 사주도 보고 관상도 보고 궁합도 맞춰보고 해야 좋은 짝을 찾는다고 가르치고 있는데, 그 말의 의미가 무엇이냐 하면 맞지 않으면 그것은 잘못된 만남이라고 하는 잘못된 그런 시각을 가지고 있는 것. 그런데 성경의 가르침은 무엇입니까? 하나님께서 우리에게 하나님께서 원하시는 짝을 허락해 주시는 거야. 하나님께서 보시기에 가장 좋은 짝으로, 하나님께서 보시기에 두 사람이 함께 성장할 수 있는 좋은 짝으로 맺어주신다고 한다면, 하나님 제가 그 어떠한 상황에 있다고 할지라도 그 약점을 감싸주고 품어주고 그래서 같이 성장할 수 있는 믿음의 동역자 인생의 동반자가 될 수 있도록 저희들의 속사람을 강건케 해 주옵소서 그것을 우선적으로 기도하는 우리 모두가 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 직장을 구하는 것도 마찬가지.
좋은 직장만, 사람들이 박수 치고 부러워할 만한 그런 직장을 원하는 것이 아니라 하나님께서 내가 간 그 직장이 있다면, 하나님 그곳에서 성실하게 일할 수 있는 믿음의 능력을 허락해 주옵소서. 직장 동료들을 신뢰하고 사랑하고 그들을 도와줄 수 있는 믿음의 강건함을 허락해 주옵소서. 그곳에서 하나님의 자녀로서 빛과 소금의 역할을 감당해낼 수 있도록 속사람을 강건케 해 주옵소서 기도해야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 저는 교역자들을 선발할 때 하나님 앞에 기도하고 있는 기도의 제목이 있다면, 하나님 어떤 교역자가 우리 교회 가운데 오든지 하나님 그 교역자에게 잘 맞추어 주고 그 교역자가 이곳에 와서 잘 성장하고 믿음으로 승리해 나갈 수 있도록 도와줄 수 있는 제 마음 가운데 인내를 허락해 주시고 도울 수 있는 마음을 허락해 주시고 함께 사역할 수 있는 기쁨을 허락해 달라고 속사람의 강건함을 위해서 기도하고 있습니다.
오늘 우리들이 무엇보다도 기도해야 될 기도의 제목이 무엇인가? 물론 우리가 원하는 것을 위해서 기도하는 것이 잘못된 건 아니에요. 더 좋은 조건의 것들을 소망하고 갈망하는 것은 괜찮아요. 그것을 위해서 기도할 수 있어요. 그러나 더욱더 중요한 것이 무엇이냐 하면 하나님, 하나님께서 허락해 주신다면 정말 하나님께서 원하시는 길이라고 한다면 그 어떠한 상황 가운데서도 담대하게 사랑으로 행할 수 있는 믿음의 능력을 주옵소서 우리 모두 기도하며 엎드릴 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 특별히 우리 주님께서 우리에게 속사람의 강건함을 만들어 주시길 원한다고 한다면 세 가지를 우리가 생각해 보아야 할 것인데요. 첫 번째는 그리스도께서 우리 안에 내주해야 합니다. 그래서 속사람의 강건함을 위해서는 주님께서 우리 마음에 거주하시기를 위해서 기도해야 돼요. 만일 우리들의 마음 가운데 그리스도께서 거주하시는 것이 아니라 사탄이 거주하게 되면 어떻게 될까요?
계속해서 우리가 속사람이 망해버리는 거죠. 무너지는 거죠. 분노할 상황 가운데서 그리스도께서 우리 마음에 거주하셔서 우리 속사람을 강건하게 해주신다고 한다면 분노할 상황에서도 참고 인내할 수 있고 분노할 상황 가운데서도 용서할 수 있고, 분노할 상황 가운데서도 오히려 측은한 마음으로 사랑으로 대할 수가 있는 믿음의 승리자가 될 수 있겠지만, 그런데 우리 마음 가운데 그리스도께서 거주하시는 것이 아니라 사탄의 음성이 우리들의 마음 가운데 들리고 그래서 사탄이 시키는 대로 우리가 행한다고 한다면 우리는 금세 무너질 수밖에 없기 때문에 주님께서 우리들의 마음 가운데 오셔서 좌정하여 주옵소서 내 마음 가운데 주인이 되어 주시옵소서 기도해야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 뿐만 아니라 우리의 믿음이 사랑 안에서 더욱더 뿌리가 내리도록 기도해야 되는 거죠.
우리의 믿음이 흔들리지 아니하게, 조그마한 시련과 어려움이 있다고 할지라도 강한 폭풍우가 닥친다고 할지라도, 그러한 상황 가운데서 뿌리가 깊은 나무는 흔들리지 않는 것인데 우리의 믿음이 흔들리지 않게 뿌리가 깊게 해달라고 기도해야 되는 것이고, 그뿐만 아니라 우리의 그 사랑이 그리스도에 대한 사랑을 더 많이 알아갈 수 있도록… 그리스도의 사랑을 어떻게 많이 알아갑니까? 수많은 경험들을 통해서 힘든 일이 있을 때마다 어떤 무슨 일을 만날 때마다 하나님이 얼마나 우리를 사랑하시는지 우리에게 도움의 손길이 되시는지를 날마다 경험해 나가는 가운데, 시간이 지날수록 “하나님이 이렇게 좋구나” 매일매일 하나님의 사랑이 얼마나 큰가 그것을 날마다 경험해 나가면서 그 하나님의 사랑이 얼마나 풍성한지 경험하는 가운데 우리의 속사람이 더욱더 강건해지는 그런 모습으로 변화되어 가야 될 줄로 믿습니다.

Strengthening the Inner Man: The Priority of Spiritual Maturity
We are continuing to examine the words of Ephesians. The passage we read today is a bit easier to understand, isn’t it? Yes, I believe it was likely easier to grasp than last week’s text. However, to help us understand it even better, I would like to introduce a version with added explanations, just as I did before. If you look, on the left is the content of the Revised New Korean Version we use, and on the right is the content I have interpreted with explanations added to make it easier to understand. Let’s compare them and try to grasp what today’s text is trying to say.
From verse 14, the Apostle Paul speaks like this. Since he has realized the mysterious secret of God—as he wrote in the verses we read last week—he is saying these things based on that realization: “I am kneeling before the Heavenly Father; I am praying. The one I kneel and pray to is God, and who is this God of ours? Who is God? It is because of God that all nations have received their names—that is, they exist because of Him. Whether they are nations on earth or nations in heaven—meaning nations that exist now or nations that have already disappeared from history and left no trace in this world.”
Verse 16: “I am praying to the God who brought all those nations into existence. I am praying that God would grant you strength in your inner self. The physical body can fall ill; the body can collapse. But the inner self must not become weak. I am praying that He would make your inner self strong according to the riches of His glory. God’s glory is truly brilliant and abundant, isn’t it? I am praying that your inner self would be strengthened just like that, and I am praying that He would make you strong through the Holy Spirit. For it is the Holy Spirit who makes us strong.”
“As a result, I am praying that Christ would dwell in your hearts. You allow Him to dwell there by receiving Christ through faith. Therefore, you must live the life Christ desires. That is how Christ dwells in your heart. So, I am praying that your roots would go deep in love and your foundation would be firm. That way, you will not be shaken no matter what trials come your way. And so, I am praying that you, along with all the other saints, would be able to understand, just as the other saints do. I am praying that you would realize how wide, how long, how high, and how deep the love of Christ is. Just as we must measure the width, length, height, and depth of an object to truly know it, I hope you will fully taste and understand the love of Christ. I pray that you would know the love of Christ, which surpasses our knowledge. Then, eventually, you will be filled until you reach the fullness of God.”
“May glory be eternal to the God who will act more abundantly than anything we ask or think. Since God is the one who acts by the power at work within us, I am praying that glory be to that God forever and ever, through all generations. So, may the glory of God appear in the church—in other words, in Christ Jesus. For the church is the body of Christ. Amen.”
Do you understand it to some extent? As it explains throughout, today’s text can be seen as a list of the prayer topics the Apostle Paul is praying for. If we look at the next diagram, we can see exactly what he prayed for. He mentions five things:
First, he is praying for the inner man to be strengthened; second, for Christ to dwell in your hearts; third, for your faith to be rooted and grounded in love; fourth, to truly know the love of Christ; and finally, that you may reach the fullness of God. Today’s passage speaks of these five prayer topics. However, these five are not just a blind or simple list. In fact, they can be grouped together. If we were to name them under one major heading, it would be “praying for the strengthening of the inner man.” That is the topic of the Apostle Paul’s prayer. He prays that the inner man be strengthened by the Spirit.
So, he hopes that Christ dwells in your hearts, that you are rooted in love, and that you know Christ’s love—ultimately, what is the final purpose of this prayer? It is the prayer topic that we would grow until we reach the fullness of God, rather than remaining as children. In other words, he prayed for the strengthening of the inner man. Can you see the whole picture of the content? Your level of understanding is excellent. As we examine today’s text and consider the prayer topics Paul prayed for while thinking of the Ephesian church, there is one thing we must notice first: Paul prayed for the strengthening of the inner man above all else. When Paul prayed, he didn’t pray primarily that “I hope the children of the Ephesian saints go to good universities,” or “I hope the Ephesian saints are healthier, live longer, and stay free of disease.” He didn’t even pray primarily that “I hope the businesses they are running now do well.” The prayer topic Paul prayed for most earnestly was the strengthening of the saints’ inner man.
I want us to think deeply about this point. It is because the strengthening of the inner man is more important than anything else. It is more important than any other thing. Of course, this doesn’t mean that when we pray, it isn’t desirable to pray for our worldly needs. I am not saying that praying for worldly needs is “low-class.” Why is that? What did the Apostle Paul also pray for? He prayed for healing. When Paul was suffering due to a physical ailment, which he even described as a “thorn in the flesh,” he prayed earnestly to God to “please remove this thorn from my body.” Because it was so painful, Paul prayed fervently for that healing, so we don’t need to think that there is no need to pray for healing.
On the contrary, what is the teaching of the Bible? It teaches: “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord” (James 5:14, ESV). Furthermore, what did Paul pray for? He prayed for pain to be removed. In 2 Corinthians, we can see clearly that Paul’s prayer was that God would remove the pain they had and prevent them from encountering pain in the future, and he asked the Corinthian church to pray for that as well. Above all, when Jesus taught us how to pray, how did He tell us to pray? “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11, ESV). He said pray for bread. Was He saying pray only for bread? Within that word “bread” are all our needs. Pray for our health, pray for our healing, pray for our problems to be solved, and if there is various pain, pray for that pain. Jesus’ teaching on prayer was to pray for our needs.
Therefore, every time we encounter difficulties while living in this world, I believe we can pray for health, for our children’s marriage, for our children to go to good universities, and we can pray every morning for the businesses we are running. However, what we must notice while considering today’s text together is that our prayers must not stop there. I hope we can meditate today on the fact that there is a prayer topic we must pray for above all else, and that is to pray for the strengthening of our inner man. What is our “inner man”? What is our “outer man” and what is our “inner man”? If our outer man is this being consisting of the flesh, which we can touch and converse with, then what is our inner man? It is difficult to explain precisely, but perhaps the inner man is the being that decides everything we do—how we move, live, and decide. we perform mental activities; specifically, activities of “intellect, emotion, and will.”
We come to know things, we feel things, and we act with will. We can call the subject that performs these activities of intellect, emotion, and will the “inner man.” But what happens if the inner man is healthy? No matter what problem strikes, it doesn’t become a big issue. Our physical body is weak and can collapse, and our flesh can sometimes fall into difficult and painful situations, but if our inner man is strong, we can remain un-collapsed in any situation. That is why it says pray for the strength of the inner man. When we have children, what do we do to make sure they live well in this society? We educate them. If we don’t educate them, it’s hard for our children to survive in this harsh world. They wouldn’t know what to do for work, how to converse in relationships, how to show manners, or how to conduct business. Just as we must go to school and learn how to live as members of this society to live well, and just as simply giving a child food and making their body grow isn’t enough to make them grow well, we have an inner man, and I believe that only when our inner man is strong will we live a life of spiritual victory.
There is a Korean proverb that says, “Even if you are carried off by a tiger, you will live if you keep your wits about you.” No matter what suffering strikes in this world, if our inner man stands upright—if our faith stands upright—we can triumph over any obstacle. Therefore, prayer for the inner man, for the strengthening of the inner man, is only natural. In the Bible, there are many people of faith, and how did they triumph? They didn’t triumph because all their conditions were good. It’s not that they walked the path of success because there was no suffering or trial, or because a smooth, flower-lined path opened up for them. On the contrary, people of faith encountered countless difficulties. They encountered trials. They were thrown into prison. They were unfairly sold into slavery. But in those situations, Joseph, whose inner man was strong, was not shaken and could stand upright before God. A man named Job was able to stand up boldly in the midst of tribulation even after losing everything he had. The same is true for David, Daniel, Daniel’s three friends, and Joshua and Caleb. I believe they were able to remain unshaken in any situation because their inner man was strong. Therefore, what is the prayer topic we must pray for above all else? I believe we must all be those who pray for the strengthening of the inner man.
When I teach the Bible to young people and teach them what to pray for regarding a spouse, I often emphasize that while praying for specific conditions in a spouse is important, the strengthening of the inner man is even more important. I have often heard it taught within our Christian circles that when choosing a spouse, one should pray specifically. For example, regarding a potential husband or wife, they say to pray for specific details and God will answer. So, people set conditions—height should be this many centimeters, the school should be at least here, the job should be at least there—and many people testify that after praying for those things, God eventually gave them such a spouse. I once saw a female actress come out and testify like that. She said, “I prayed for 20 specific things in a spouse, and I met a great spouse who fulfilled all 20,” and she shared her testimony. How did she meet someone like that? She met him because she’s an actress. If I’m not an actress, I can’t meet someone like that. I thought it turned out well, but later I saw that they got divorced.
How do I teach? Of course, it is necessary to pray for certain conditions, as you can’t just marry anyone. It is important to pray for the things I want, but there is something more important. What is more important? It is praying: “God, if You allow me to meet the partner You desire for me, please grant me strength in my inner man so that no matter what difficulties we encounter, we can overcome them together in faith. If my spouse has weaknesses, let me fill them, embrace them, and help them so that we can become a family that grows together. Please let me have that kind of heart.” That is a prayer for the strengthening of the inner man. You don’t know what kind of answer God will give to your prayer. God may give you what you want, or He may not. But regardless of the way He answers, if it is the spouse God gave me, let me love them even more and give me the strength to embrace their weaknesses as well as their strengths. When a son-in-law or a daughter-in-law enters our family, even if they don’t fulfill all the conditions I wanted, please let me be a good parent who loves, treasures, and embraces them to build a good family. I believe we must pray like that. How does the superstition of this world teach?
Worldly superstition teaches that everyone has a “good match,” and if you meet that match you will be happy, but if you don’t you will be miserable. So, it teaches that you must check your fortune-telling, your physiognomy, and your marital compatibility to find that good match. The meaning behind that is a wrong perspective that says if you don’t match, it was a “wrong encounter.” But what is the teaching of the Bible? God allows us the partner He desires for us. If He joins us as the best match in His sight—as a match where two people can grow together—then we must pray: “God, no matter what situation I am in, let us be spiritual coworkers and life companions who can cover and embrace those weaknesses so we can grow together. Please strengthen our inner man.” I believe we must all make this a priority in prayer. It’s the same with finding a job.
Rather than just wanting a “good job” that people will applaud and envy, pray: “God, if this is the job I have gone to, grant me the strength of faith to work diligently there. Grant me spiritual strength to trust, love, and help my colleagues. Strengthen my inner man so that I can fulfill the role of light and salt as a child of God there.” When I select ministry staff, if there is a prayer topic I offer to God, it is: “God, no matter what minister comes to our church, please grant me patience in my heart to adapt well to them and help them grow well and triumph in faith here. Grant me a heart that can help and the joy of ministering together.” I am praying for the strengthening of my inner man.
What is the prayer topic we must pray for above all else today? Of course, it isn’t wrong to pray for what we want. It is okay to hope and long for better conditions. You can pray for those things. However, what is even more important is: “God, if You allow it, and if it is truly the path You desire, grant me the strength of faith to act boldly in love in any situation.” I pray in the name of the Lord that we all can pray and kneel. In particular, if we want our Lord to strengthen our inner man, there are three things we must consider. First, Christ must dwell within us. So, for the strengthening of the inner man, we must pray for the Lord to reside in our hearts. What happens if Satan resides in our hearts instead of Christ?
Our inner man would constantly be ruined. It would collapse. In a situation that makes us angry, if Christ resides in our heart and strengthens our inner man, we can endure with patience even in that anger, we can forgive even in that anger, and we can even be victors in faith who treat others with love and compassion. But if Christ does not reside in our heart and instead the voice of Satan is heard, and we act as Satan dictates, we cannot help but collapse quickly. Therefore, we must pray: “Lord, come into my heart and take Your seat. Become the Master of my heart.” Furthermore, we must pray that our faith would be rooted even deeper in love.
We must pray that our roots would go deep so that our faith is not shaken even if there are small trials and difficulties, or even if a strong storm strikes. Just as a tree with deep roots is not shaken in such situations, we must pray that our roots would be deep so our faith is not shaken. And beyond that, we must pray that we would come to know the love of Christ more and more. How do we come to know the love of Christ more? Through countless experiences—every time there is a hard thing or whatever we encounter—by experiencing daily how much God loves us and how He becomes a helping hand to us. As time passes, as we daily experience how great God’s love is and how abundant it is, thinking “God is so good,” our inner man should be transformed into one that is even stronger.
So, in what direction should we pray? We must all be those who pray that our faith would grow even more so that through all those things, we might taste the fullness of God and enter into that fullness. Then what kind of God is He? He is the God who will answer with things greater than we think or expect. I pray in the name of the Lord that we all may be those who daily experience, through prayer, that God who loved us so much He gave His Son to the cross, and who promised to graciously give us all things along with Him.
