“그때는 맞고 지금은 틀렸다”라고 하는 말이 있습니다. 흔히 정치인들이 자기들이 예전에 했던 말을 뒤집으면서 하던 말들이라고 할 수가 있겠는데요. 우리가 이 정치인들이 하는 행태를 보면 여당에 있었을 때 했던 말을 야당이 되면 완전히 180도로 바꾸어 버리고, 야당이 되었을 때 했던 말들을 여당이 되면 180도로 바꾸는 그런 행태들을 보면서 정치인들에 대한 신뢰감이 자꾸만 떨어지는 것 같습니다. 상황에 따라 자기 유리한 대로 말을 바꾸어 버리는 그 사람들의 마음을 신뢰할 수가 없기 때문인 것이죠. 그런데 오늘 놀랍게도 예수님께서는 예수님께서 예전에 하셨던 말씀을 완전히 바꾸어 버리시는 그런 말씀을 하는 것 같습니다. 예수님께서 왜 이런 말씀을 하시는 걸까요? 예전에는 어떤 의미에서 그렇게 말씀하셨는데 지금은 왜 이렇게 말씀을 정반대로 말씀하시는 이유가 무엇일까요? 예전에 예수님께서는 제자들을 파송하시면서 하셨던 말씀이 있었는데요.
그때 예수님께서 말씀하시기를 너희가 하나님 나라의 복음을 선포하러 가면서 돈주머니 가지고 갈 필요가 없다, 챙길 필요가 없다고 말씀해 주셨습니다. 여행을 위하여 물품을 준비할 필요가 없다고 말씀하셨고 아무것도 준비할 필요가 없다고 말씀하신 적이 있습니다. 언제 그랬었죠? 마태복음 10장에 보면 그런 말씀이 있습니다. 마태복음 10장 9절에서 10절 말씀에 예수님께서 이렇게 말씀하신 것이죠. “너희 전대에 금이나 은이나 동을 가지지 말고 여행을 위하여 배낭이나 두 벌 옷이나 신이나 지팡이를 가지지 말라 이는 일꾼이 자기의 먹을 것 받는 것이 마땅함이라” 말씀하신 것입니다. 사역을 하러 갈 때 돈 준비할 필요 없다, 여벌의 옷이 필요 없다, 여벌의 신발을 준비할 필요가 없다 그렇게 말씀하신 이유가 무엇이겠습니까? 하나님께서 책임져 주실 것이라고 하는 의미가 거기에 들어 있을 겁니다.
너희가 준비가 부족하다고 할지라도 하나님께서는 너희들과 함께하실 것이고, 하나님의 일을 하러 갈 때 사역자들이 그런 것에 대해서 걱정할 게 아니라 하나님께서 공급해 주시니까, 하나님께서 도와주실 것이니까 그러한 준비가 필요한 것이 아니라고 말씀해 주신 것이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 그런데 정말 우리가 주의 일을 한다고 하면 아무것도 준비하지 않아도 될까요? 정말 주님의 일을 한다고만 하면, 의롭고 선한 일을 한다고 한다면, 우리가 하나님께서 원하시는 일을 한다고 한다면 정말 아무런 준비가 없어도 충분히 우리가 사역을 할 수 있다고 이야기할 수가 있을까요? 사실은 그렇지 않을 것입니다. 정말 우리가 만일 선교지에 간다고 하면 많은 준비가 필요하겠죠. 교회를 개척한다고 해도 그냥 할 수 있는 것이 아니라 많은 준비가 필요한 것이고요. 이런 영적인 일뿐만이 아니라 사실 우리들의 삶도 그냥 할 수 있는 것이 아니라 모든 것들이 다 준비가 필요하다고 할 수가 있겠습니다.
선교사로 나가게 된다고 한다면 무대포로 그냥 나갈 수 있는 게 아니라 먼저 선교사로 가기 위해서 어느 지역으로 가야 할지를 결정해야 할 것이고, 만일 어떤 한 나라로 가기로 결정했다고 한다면 그 나라에서 복음을 전할 수 있기 위해서 언어의 능력을 준비해야 하겠죠. 말을 배워야 할 필요가 있을 겁니다. 뿐만 아니라 그 민족에 대한 이해가 필요한 것이죠. 그 민족이 어떤 문화를 가지고 있는지, 어떤 방식의 삶을 살고 있는지 문화에 대한 충분한 이해가 필요한 것이겠고요. 재정적인 준비도 철저하게 해야 할 필요가 있을 겁니다.
사역을 하기 위해서 어떠한 것들이 필요한지 어떤 사역의 자금이 필요한지 계산해 보아야 하는 것이고, 저기서 오는 일만의 군사를 우리 군사 몇 명이 대비할 수 있을 것인가 계산을 해야 한다고 하는 주님의 말씀처럼 그냥 무작정 싸우러 나가는 것이 아니라 무작정 사역을 하러 나가는 것이 아니라, 과연 이 사역을 하기 위해서 어느 정도의 재정이 필요한가를 계산을 해야 할 것이고 그 재정을 어떻게 조달해야 할 것인지 후원자들을 잘 마련해야 될 것이고 정말 어느 일을 한다고 할지라도 그냥 할 수 있는 것이 아니라 많은 준비를 해야 할 필요가 있는 것이라고 하겠습니다. 그런데 예수님께서 말씀하시기를 너희가 복음을 전하러 갈 때 돈주머니 필요 없다, 여행을 위하여 배낭을 준비할 필요가 없다, 아무런 물품이 필요 없다 이렇게 말씀하시는 이유가 있다고 한다면 준비를 핑계로 머뭇거리지 말라고 하는 의미에서 하신 말씀일 것입니다.
많은 사람들이 왜 나서지 못하는가? 왜 많은 사람들이 하나님의 뜻에 따라 순종하지 못하는가? 그 이유는 아직 준비가 되지 못했다는 핑계로 순종하지 못하는 것입니다. 해야 할 일들이 있는데 “나는 아직 준비가 안 됐어요. 아직 내가 나설 입장이 되지가 못해요. 지금 내 코가 석 자예요. 지금 내가 아무것도 준비되지 못했기 때문에 내가 할 수 없어요”라고 하는 그런 핑계를 삼는 사람들을 향해서 예수님께서 이런 말씀을 해 주신 것입니다. “돈이 없다는 걸로 핑계 삼지 말고 지금 가라. 돈이 준비되지 않았다고 머뭇거리지 말고 지금 가라”고 말씀해 주시는 것이고, 아직 많은 물품을 준비하지 못했다고 하는 그런 핑계를 대고 있는 사람들을 향해서 “그렇게 준비 안 됐다고 머뭇거리지 말고 지금 가라.” 그렇게 지금 가서 복음을 전해야 될 시급성을 강조하기 위해서 예수님께서 하신 말씀이 “너희 전대에 돈을 준비할 필요가 없다, 너희가 배낭을 멜 필요가 없다”라고 그렇게 말씀해 주고 있는 것이라 하겠습니다.
어쩌면 요즘 청년들이 많이 결혼이 늦어지는 이유가 있다면 무엇이겠습니까? 다양한 이유가 있고 사람들마다 처한 여러 가지 복잡한 상황들이 있기 때문에 함부로 말을 하는 것이 조심스럽고 쉽게 뭐라고 단정 짓는 것은 옳지 않은 일이라고 생각이 되지만, 하나의 이유가 있다면 아직 준비되지 못했다는 그런 생각이 쉽게 결혼으로 인도하지 못할 가능성도 많이 있는 겁니다. 결혼하려고 하니까 “아직 나는 직장이 안정적인 직장이 준비되지 않아서 안정적인 직장을 얻고 난 다음에 하겠다”고 하는 이유로 자꾸만 미뤄질 수가 있는 것이고요. “내가 살 수 있는 집이라도 마련해야 되는데 아직 아파트도 제대로 마련하지 못해서 아직 못하겠다”고 하는 경우도 종종 있게 되는 것이죠. “아직은 때가 아니야. 아직은 준비가 안 됐어. 아직은 내가 할 수 있는 상황이 아니야.”
그런 여러 가지 핑계들 때문에 하나님께서 지금 우리들에게 주고 있는 그 사명을 하지 못하고 머뭇거리면서 하나님의 말씀에 순종하지 못하는 경우들이 많이 있기 때문에 예수님께서 이런 말씀을 해 주시는 겁니다. 그때 필요한 것이 무엇이냐 하면 하나님을 믿고 신뢰하고 나설 수 있는 용기인 것이죠. 나는 내 모습을 본다고 하면 부족한 것뿐이고 내 모습을 본다고 한다면 아직 준비되지 못했고 내 모습을 본다면 여러 가지로 빵점짜리 인생이라고 말할 수밖에 없지만, 그러나 하나님의 그 부르심 앞에서 “나는 못 해요. 나는 말할 수 없어요. 나는 말주변이 없어요. 나는 돈이 없어요. 나는 아직 이것이 없어요. 시간이 없어요” 여러 가지 핑계를 댈 것이 아니라 주님께서 우리를 부르신다고 한다면 하나님을 전적으로 신뢰하고 주님의 뜻에 따라 순종해야 된다는 의미에서 “너희는 돈주머니 챙길 필요 없다, 너희는 배낭 챙길 필요 없다”라고 예수님께서 말씀해 주신 것이라고 믿습니다.
지금 앞에 어떤 사람이 쓰러져 버렸는데, 지금 어떤 사람이 물에 빠져서 죽어가고 있는데, 지금 어떤 사람이 강도를 만나서 그래서 피 흘리며 쓰러져 있는데 그 상황을 본 우리들이 그 사람 앞에서 뭐라고 얘기합니까? “잠깐만 기다리세요. 잠깐만 기다리세요. 제가 지금 의대에 입학해서 의사 자격증을 따가지고 그래서 와서 내가 도와줄게요. 저는 아직 도와줄 준비가 안 됐어요. 지금 피 흘리고 계시지만 잠깐만 참고 기다리세요. 제가 지금부터 열심히 공부해서 의대에 입학해서 의사가 되고 그리고 와서 내가 도와줄게요.” 그렇게 할 수가 있겠느냐 이 말이에요. 지금 물에 사람이 빠져서 죽어가고 있는데 “잠깐만 기다리세요. 내가 지금 수영을 지금부터 열심히 배워서 응급 구조 자격을 딴 다음에 그리고 와서 내가 도와줄게요.” 그렇게 할 수 있나 이 말이에요.
그게 아니라 지금 당장 시급한 일이 우리 앞에 놓여져 있다고 한다면, 지금 생명을 살려야 되는 긴급한 상황이 있다고 한다면 내가 아직 부족하고 내가 아직 연약하다고 할지라도 핑계를 댈 것이 아니라, 준비되지 못했다는 것에 대해서 이런 말 저런 말로 핑계를 댈 것이 아니라 그 당시에 나를 향해서 부르시는 하나님의 음성에 순종하며 “저는 부족하지만 하나님을 믿고 신뢰하는 가운데 순종하겠습니다”라고 하는 것을 고백해야 된다는 의미에서 예수님께서는 너희가 돈주머니 챙길 필요 없다, 너희가 배낭을, 여벌의 신발이나 여벌의 옷이 필요 없다라고 말씀해 주신 것이라고 하겠습니다. 그런데 오늘 누가복음의 말씀 가운데서 예수님께서는 제자들에게 정반대처럼 들리는 말씀을 하고 계십니다. 너희가 이제는 돈주머니를 좀 챙겨라. 돈이 없다고 한다면 돈주머니를 좀 챙겨라 말씀하고 계시고, 너희가 여행에 필요한 물품도 챙겨라.
배낭을 챙기라고 하는 것은 배낭만 챙기라는 얘기일까요? 배낭만 챙기는 것이 아니라 그 안에 들어갈 여러 가지 물품들을 다 챙겨라. 검이 없다고 한다면 어떻게 할 것인가, 칼이 없다고 한다면 겉옷을 팔아서 칼을 사서 챙겨 놓으라고 말씀해 주고 계십니다. 예수님께서 이렇게 말씀하시는 이유가 무엇일까요? 이제는 하나님의 도우심이 있을 수 없으니, 하나님께서 우리를 도와주지 않을 수 있으니 이제는 우리가 우리의 힘으로 우리 자신을 방어하고 우리가 우리의 살길을 찾아가야 되는 것, 하나님은 아무런 도움을 줄 수 없다고 하는 그런 의미에서 이런 말씀을 하시는 것일까요? 그렇지는 않습니다. 하나님은 언제나 도와주셔요. 하나님은 어떤 하나님이신가? 우리가 기도하면 그 기도를 들으시고 도움을 요청하면 도와주시고, 하나님께서는 언제나 우리가 기도하기 전에 먼저 아시고 응답의 손길을 내미시는 하나님이시기 때문에 지금도 여전히 우리를 도와주시는 하나님이심을 확실하게 믿어야 하는 것이죠.
그런데 지금 예수님께서 이 제자들을 향해서 십자가를 지시기 직전에 제자들을 향해서 이 말씀을 해 주시는 이유가 있다고 한다면, 지금 영적인 싸움이 일어날 긴박한 상황 가운데 있기 때문에 예수님께서 이런 말씀을 해 주시고 계시는 것입니다. 물론 지금까지 우리들의 삶 가운데서 영적인 싸움이 단 한 번도 없었던 적은 없습니다. 언제나 항상 우리 앞에는 영적인 싸움이 놓여져 있는 것이죠. 하지만 특별히 우리로 하여금 무너지기 쉬운 상황이 닥칠 때가 있는데, 지금 예수님께서 십자가를 지고 어려움과 고난이 닥치게 되는 아주 심각한 상황이 일어나는, 그런 심각한 상황이 벌어지는 상황에 앞서서 예수님께서 지금이 더 위험할 수 있으니 거기에 대해서 철저하게 준비하라고 하는 의미에서 이 말씀을 해 주시는 것이라고 하겠습니다. 그런데 예수님께서 준비하라고 하면서 무엇을 준비하라고 하셨습니까? 돈주머니를 이제 챙겨라 말씀하셨습니까? 그러면 우리가 돈을 열심히 모아야 할까요? 돈을 열심히 모아야 되겠죠.
무슨 일을 한다고 하면 돈이 필요하니까 그 어떤 걸 하더라도 움직이면 돈이고 뭘 하면 돈이 필요하고 무슨 일을 하든지 돈이 필요하니까, 그러니까 예수님께서는 어떤 사역을 하기 위해서는, 주님의 말씀에 순종하기 위해서는 우리가 많은 돈을 벌어야 된다고 하는 의미에서 돈주머니를 챙기라고 그렇게 말씀을 하신 것일까요? 배낭을 챙겨라, 검을 챙겨라, 싸워야 되니까 창칼을 잘 준비하고 싸울 무기들을 챙기라고 하는 그런 의미에서 예수님께서 이런 말씀을 하신 것일까요? 그런 의미가, 예수님께서 돈주머니를 챙겨라 배낭을 챙겨라 칼을 챙겨라 무기를 챙기라고 말씀해 주셨는데, 그러니까 우리가 정말로 돈을 챙기고 그리고 칼을 챙기고 이런 것들을 챙겨야 하는 것이 아니라고 하는 것을, 예수님의 말씀이 그것을 의미하는 것이 아니라고 하는 것을 우리가 기억할 필요가 있는데요. 예수님께서 이렇게 말씀하신 것은 비유로 말씀하셨기 때문입니다.
예수님께서는 비유를 늘 사용하시면서 제자들에게 말씀을 해 주셨는데 어느 날 예수님께서 길을 가다가 제자들에게 말씀해 주셨습니다. “너희들 누룩 조심해야 돼”라고 말씀해 주셨어요. 예수님께서 누룩을 조심하라고 말하니까 제자들이 그때 “아 우리가 빵을 안 가져왔구나. 빵을 그냥 방치해 두면 거기에 누룩이 생길 것이고 그 빵을 먹지 못하게 되는데 아이고 큰일 났다. 우리가 빵 안 가져왔네” 하면서 웅성거리기 시작했습니다. 하지만 예수님께서 제자들에게 너희가 누룩 조심해야 돼 말씀하신 것은 진짜 누룩을 조심하라고 하신 의미가 아니라 비유로 말씀하신 것이죠. 어떤 비유인가요? 바리새인들의 거짓 가르침, 사두개인들의 거짓 가르침, 그러한 잘못된 가르침의 누룩을 조심하라고 하는 의미에서 누룩 조심해라라고 말씀하신 거예요. 누룩 얘기를 한 게 아니란 말이죠. 예수님께서는 이스라엘 민족을 향해서 이야기하셨습니다. 뭐라고 말씀하셨습니까?
“너희가 이 성전을 헐라 내가 사흘 동안에 일으키리라” 말씀해 주셨습니다. 그러니까 예수님께서 말씀하신 것은 성전을 진짜로 부수라고 하는 이야기입니까? 아니요. 성전 부수라고 하는 이야기가 아니라 너희가 내 몸을 십자가에 못 박고 나를 죽여도 나는 3일 만에 다시 살아날 것이다, 성전에 대해서 이야기한 것이 아니라 성전을 말하면서 자신의 몸, 성전의 역할을 하는 예수님의 몸을 십자가에 매달면 그것으로 끝나는 것이 아니라 내가 3일 만에 다시 살아날 것이라고 하는 비유로 말씀해 주신 것이죠. 뿐만 아니라 예수님께서 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 주는 물을 마시는 자는 영원히 목마르지 아니하리니” 말씀해 주셨어요. 그때 사마리아 수가성 여인이 깜짝 놀라서 말합니다. “주님 그런 물이 있으면 내게 주세요. 그런 물이 있으면 내게 주세요.” 하지만 예수님께서 말씀하신 물은 이런 물이 아니에요.
예수님께서 말씀하신 것은 예수님께서 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으시고 그래서 그 생명을 우리에게 주실 것인데 우리의 영적인 갈증을 해결하고 우리의 배고픔을 해결하기 위해서 예수님 자신을 주실 것이라고 하는 그런 의미에서 물을 주실 것이라고 말씀해 주신 것이죠. 이와 마찬가지로 예수님께서는 비유로 말씀하실 때 무슨 말씀을 하시는가 항상 그 말씀이 영적인 의미에서 말씀해 주시는 겁니다.
너희가 돈주머니를 챙겨야 되지 않겠느냐, 너희가 배낭도 챙기고 이제는 칼을 사라, 칼을 준비하라고 말씀하시는 것은 실제적으로 전쟁을 하게 된다고 한다면 자금도 필요하고 군자금도 필요하고 그리고 군수품도 필요하고 전쟁 물자가 필요한 것처럼… 요즘 저 중동에서 전쟁이 벌어지고 있는데 그 중동의 전쟁에서 승리하기 위해서는 군자금이 필요하고 내게 2,000밀리언 달러가 넘는 돈을 더 달라 이야기하는 그 요구처럼 돈이 필요하니까 돈을 더 달라고 이야기하고 미사일 좀 더 가져오고 전투기도 더 가져오고 그래서 그 칼을, 더 많은 무기를 모아야 그래야 전쟁에서 승리할 수 있게 되는 것과 마찬가지로 우리의 영적인 전쟁을 위해서 우리가 철저하게 영적인 전쟁의 준비를 하라고 하는 의미에서 예수님께서 이 말씀을 해 주시고 계신 것입니다. 지금 우리들 앞에 무엇이 놓여져 있는가, 제자들 앞에 무엇이 놓여져 있는가 영적인 전쟁이 기다리고 있는 것이죠.
우리에게 무서운 전쟁이 무엇인가 이 세상의 전쟁이 아니라 영적인 전쟁이 무서운 겁니다. 이 세상의 전쟁은 우리를, 우리의 생명을 끊을 수 있지만 영적인 전쟁은 우리의 영혼을 멸절시킬 수 있는, 완전히 우리를 파멸로 이끄는 영적인 전쟁이 더 무서운 전쟁에 놓여져 있는데, 그 전쟁에서 승리하기 위해서 영적인 전쟁에 승리하기 위한 준비가 필요하다고 하는 의미에서 너희는 군자금을 준비하고 군수품을 준비하고 군 무기를 준비하라고 예수님께서 말씀하고 계신 것입니다. 우리의 싸움은 무슨 싸움입니까? 에베소서 6장 12절에서 말씀하고 계신 것이죠. “우리의 씨름은 혈과 육을 상대하는 것이 아니요 통치자들과 권세들과 이 어둠의 세상 주관자들과 하늘에 있는 악의 영들을 상대함이라” 우리를 무너뜨리려고 하는 악한 영의 세력과 싸우는 씨름이 우리 앞에 놓여져 있는 것이고 우리의 싸움이 무엇인가 영적인 싸움이 우리 앞에 놓여져 있다 말씀하신 것이죠.
그래서 예수님께서는 요한복음 18장 36절의 말씀에 이렇게 말씀해 주셨습니다. “예수께서 대답하시되 내 나라는 이 세상에 속한 것이 아니니라 만일 내 나라가 이 세상에 속한 것이었더라면 내 종들이 싸워 나로 유대인들에게 넘겨지지 않게 하였으리라 이제 내 나라는 여기에 속한 것이 아니니라” 지금 예수님께서 하나님의 나라를 전하고 이 하나님 나라의 왕으로서 사역하고 계시는데 이 나라가 어떤, 예수님의 나라는 어떤 나라인가? 로마와 싸워서 이겨야 할 나라가 아니라 헤롯 왕과 싸워서 이겨야 될 나라가 아니라 이 세상의 정권과 싸워서 그래서 승리를 쟁취하는 것이 아니라, 보이지 않는 권세, 사탄의 권세, 악마의 권세와 싸워서 이겨야 할 전쟁을 두고 있는 하나님의 나라는 영적인 나라인 것이고 그래서 그 영적인 싸움을 해야 되는 것이라고 예수님께서 말씀해 주신 것입니다.
그래서 그런 영적인 싸움에 철저하게 준비하라고 하는 것을 말씀하시기 위해서 이 세상 전쟁에 대비해야 된다고 하는 언어로 교훈해 주신 것이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 그래서 예수님을 십자가에 못 박기 위하여 군사들이 예수님을 체포하러 왔을 때 그때 베드로가 칼을 빼 들어서 저항하기 시작했습니다. 어디 우리 예수님을 잡아가느냐고 하면서 그 칼을 휘두르며 제사장의 종의 귀를 떨어뜨린 것이죠. 그때 예수님께서 베드로를 보면서 뭐라고 말씀하셨습니까? “베드로야 정말 고맙다. 너밖에 없다. 내가 칼 준비하라고 했는데 네가 칼 준비했구나. 이때를 위해서 내가 칼을 준비하라고 했는데 잘했다. 고맙다”라고 예수님께서 말씀하지 않았어요.
예수님의 전쟁은 바로 우리 앞에 있는 적들과 싸우는 게 예수님의 전쟁이 아니었기 때문입니다. 그래서 예수님께서는 뭐라고 말씀해 주셨습니까? 베드로를 향해서 마태복음 26장 52절의 말씀에 “이에 예수께서 이르시되 네 칼을 도로 칼집에 꽂으라 칼을 가지는 자는 다 칼로 망하느니라” 이 세상의 싸움을 하는 자는 어떻게 될 것인가 결국 망하게 될 것이다 말씀하시며 우리의 싸움이 육적인 싸움이 아니라 영적인 싸움이라고 하는 것을 말씀해 주신 것이죠. 우리는 어떻게 이길 수 있습니까? 어떻게 영적인 전투력을 기를 수가 있겠습니까? 어떻게 영적인 준비가 가능합니까? 먼저 우리는 우리의 적이 누구인가를 제대로 알아야 합니다. 우리의 적은 우리 앞에 있는 것이 아니라 우리 안에 들어 있습니다.
적은 우리 앞에 있는 사람이 나의 적이 아닙니다. 우리 앞에 있는 그 사람이 우리를 향해서 도전하고 우리를 향해서 비난하고 욕하고 우리를 괴롭게 할 때 우리 속에서 우리의 마음을 무너뜨리기 위한 영적인 싸움을 걸어오는 사탄이 있는 것이죠. “포기하라. 너는 결코 이길 수 없어”라고 우리를 속삭이기도 하고 “화내라 저 사람을 박살 내버려라. 그 사람을 그냥 내버려 두지 말고 네가 본때를 보여줘라” 하면서 우리를 우리로 하여금 분노하게 만들고, 우리로 하여금 절망하게 만들고, 우리로 하여금 낙망하게 만들고, 우리로 하여금 탐욕스럽게 만들고, 우리로 하여금 넘어지게 만드는 사탄의 그 유혹이 우리들의 마음 가운데서 역사하고 있을 때, 그 사탄과 싸워서 이기는 게 영적인 싸움의 승리라고 할 수가 있겠습니다.
예수님께서 돈주머니를 준비하고 배낭도 준비하고 무기도 준비하라고 말씀하시는 것은, 우리 앞에 있는 사람들과 싸워서 그 사람들을 밟아버리고 그래서 우리가 이 세상의 정권을 차지하고 이 세상의 모든 우리의 대적들을 다 물리쳐버리고 그래서 우리가 완전한 이 세상에서의 승기를 잡으라고 하는 그런 말씀이 아니라, 우리의 마음 가운데 우리를 넘어뜨리고 있는 사탄의 유혹을 물리치기 위해서 철저한 영적인 준비가 필요하다는 의미에서, 우리 마음에 전투 준비가 필요하다는 의미에서 말씀해 주고 계신 것입니다. 지금 예수님께서는 십자가를 지기 위해서 바로 이제 며칠이 지나지 않으면 십자가를 져야 할 상황 가운데 있습니다. 자신들의 선생님인 예수님이 이제 십자가에 못 박히는 그 장면을 보면서, 무덤에 묻히는 그 처참한 광경을 보면서 이제 제자들의 마음은 사탄의 유혹에 의해서 완전히 흔들리기 시작할 겁니다.
예수님을 배신하고 도망가야 하는 그런 유혹이 있을 것이고, 절망하는 유혹이 생길 것이고, 그리고 분노하는 유혹이 생길 것이고, 수많은 유혹들이 있을 때 그때 우리가 영적으로 승리하기 위해서, 하나님께서 우리를 부르신 그 부르심에 응답하기 위해서 우리가 철저하게 준비해야 할 필요가 있습니다. 우리는 어떻게 준비할 것인가 우리가 준비할 무기, 우리가 준비할 군자금, 우리가 준비할 군수품이 무엇입니까? 에베소서 6장 10절에서부터 18절의 말씀에서는 이렇게 가르쳐 주고 있습니다. “끝으로 너희가 주 안에서와 그 힘의 능력으로 강건하여지고 마귀의 간계를 능히 대적하기 위하여 하나님의 전신 갑주를 입으라 우리의 씨름은 혈과 육을 상대하는 것이 아니요 통치자들과 권세들과 이 어둠의 세상 주관자들과 하늘에 있는 악의 영들을 상대함이라 그러므로 하나님의 전신 갑주를 취하라 이는 악한 날에 너희가 능히 대적하고 모든 일을 행한 후에 서기 위함이라 그런즉 서서 진리로 너희 허리 띠를 띠고 의의 호심경을 붙이고 평안의 복음이 준비한 것으로 신을 신고 모든 것 위에 믿음의 방패를 가지고 이로써 능히 악한 자의 모든 불화살을 소멸하고 구원의 투구와 성령의 검 곧 하나님의 말씀을 가지라 모든 기도와 간구를 하되 항상 성령 안에서 기도하고 이를 위하여 깨어 구하기를 항상 힘쓰며 여러 성도들을 위하여 구하라”
이것이 영적인 준비일 줄로 믿습니다. 주님께서는 어떻게 승리하셨습니까? 주님께서는 침 뱉는 사람들, 모욕을 주며 욕을 하고 조롱하는 사람들, 채찍질하고 십자가에 못 박아버린 그 사람들을 향해서 예수님께서는 열두 군단이나 되는 그 천사들을 동원해서 그들을 박살 내버리지 않았습니다. 사탄은 예수님의 마음 가운데서 “네가 하나님의 아들 아니냐 십자가에서 내려가라 그러면 저들이 꼼짝 못 할 거다. 열두 군단이나 더 되는 천사들을 가지고 와서 저놈들을 완전히 박살 내버려라. 저들이 꼼짝하지 못할 거다”라고 하는 그 유혹이 예수님의 마음 가운데 들어설 수 있을 것입니다. 하지만 주님께서는 기도로 준비하셨고, 그런 사탄의 유혹에 따라 십자가의 사명을 내팽개쳐버리고 그냥 내려오신 것이 아니라 십자가 위에서 하나님의 뜻에 전적으로 순종함으로써 사탄의 권세를 물리치고 승리하셨습니다. 주님께서 십자가 위에서 기도하신 기도의 내용. “아버지 저들을 사하여 주옵소서 자기들이 하는 것을 알지 못함이니이다”
사랑하는 성도 여러분 오늘 우리가 살아가는 이 세상은 늘 영적인 전투가 있는 세상입니다. 매 순간순간 우리들의 마음에 사탄이 우리를 충동질하면서 넘어뜨립니다. “너 자존심도 없냐? 화내버려 네가 손해 보고 있는데 가만히 있을 거야? 다 빼앗길 거니까 손해 보지 않으려면 분노하고 갑질을 해. 손해 보지 않으려면 네가 살아있다는 것을 보여주어.” 우리를 향해서 계속해서 충동질하고 있는 거죠. 또한 우리를 향해서 우리들의 마음의 문을 닫아버리라고 충동질합니다. “네가 마음의 문을 열고 있으니까 그런 거야. 닫아버려 아는 척하지 마. 무시해버려.” 우리를 향해서 자꾸만 충동질하는 거죠. 그뿐만 아니라 우리를 향해서 속삭이는 겁니다. “너는 아무 쓸데가 없는 인생이야. 너는 아무런 자격이 없어. 너는 실패자야. 너는 아무런 가치가 없어.” 우리를 향해서 자꾸만 무너뜨리는 이야기를 하고 있는 것이죠. 또한 우리의 심령을 향해서 외치는 겁니다. “돈이 너를 살리는 거야. 돈을 얻기 위해서는 끝까지 양심 그냥 내버려 거짓말로 그냥 해치워버려 네가 의를 위해서 나섰다가 너만 손해 봐” 자꾸만 우리의 마음을 충동질하면서 우리를 넘어뜨리려고 하는 사탄의 유혹 앞에서 오늘 주님의 음성에 귀 기울이는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 바랍니다.
마음에 군자금을 준비하고, 군수품을 준비하고, 그리고 무기를 준비하면서 영적인 전쟁에서 승리하는 우리 모두가 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 늘 깨어 기도하고, 늘 하나님의 말씀을 읽고 묵상하며 믿음으로 이길 수 있게 해 주옵소서 기도하는 가운데 매 순간순간이 이곳에 있는 한 시간만이 아니라 우리의 삶의 모든 곳에서 예배자의 삶으로 승리하는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
Preparing for Spiritual Warfare
There is a saying, “It was right then, but it is wrong now.” These are often words used by politicians as they reverse what they previously said. When we look at the behavior of these politicians, we see them changing words they said while in the ruling party by 180 degrees once they become the opposition, and vice versa. Seeing such behavior, it seems that trust in politicians continues to decline. It is because we cannot trust the hearts of people who change their words to their advantage depending on the situation. However, surprisingly, today Jesus seems to be saying something that completely reverses what He said before. Why is Jesus saying such things? What was the meaning of His previous words, and why is He saying the exact opposite now? Previously, there was a word Jesus spoke while sending out His disciples.
At that time, Jesus said that as they went to proclaim the gospel of the kingdom of God, they did not need to take a moneybag or pack anything. He told them there was no need to prepare supplies for the journey, no need to prepare anything at all. When was that? We find such words in Matthew chapter 10. In Matthew 10:9–10 (ESV), Jesus said: “Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food.” What was the reason for saying they didn’t need to prepare money, extra clothes, or extra shoes when going out for ministry? It likely contained the meaning that God would take responsibility.
It meant that even if their preparation was lacking, God would be with them. When going to do God’s work, ministers should not worry about such things because God provides and helps; therefore, such preparation was not necessary. But if we do the Lord’s work, can we really prepare nothing? If we are truly doing the Lord’s work—righteous and good work, the work God desires—can we say that we can sufficiently carry out ministry without any preparation? In fact, that would not be the case. If we were truly going to a mission field, much preparation would be required. Even planting a church cannot be done just like that; it requires much preparation. Not just for spiritual matters, but in fact, our lives cannot be lived just like that; everything requires preparation.
If one is to go out as a missionary, one cannot just go blindly; first, one must decide which region to go to. If it is decided to go to a certain country, language ability must be prepared to preach the gospel there. It would be necessary to learn the language. Furthermore, an understanding of that nation is required—sufficient understanding of what kind of culture they have and what way of life they live. Financial preparation must also be made thoroughly.
One must calculate what things are needed for ministry and what funds are required. Just as the Lord’s word says one must calculate whether our soldiers can face the ten thousand soldiers coming from over there, one does not go out to fight blindly or go out for ministry blindly. One must calculate how much finance is needed for this ministry and arrange supporters well to procure that finance. Truly, even if one does any work, it cannot be done just like that; much preparation is necessary. However, if there is a reason Jesus said they didn’t need a moneybag or a bag for the journey when going to preach the gospel, it was meant in the sense of telling them not to hesitate using preparation as an excuse.
Why are many people unable to step forward? Why are many people unable to obey according to God’s will? The reason is they cannot obey using the excuse that they are not yet prepared. There are things to be done, but they make excuses like, “I’m not ready yet. I’m not in a position to step forward yet. I have enough on my own plate right now. Since I have nothing prepared, I cannot do it.” Toward such people, Jesus spoke these words. He was saying, “Do not use the lack of money as an excuse, but go now. Do not hesitate because money is not prepared, but go now.” Toward those making the excuse that they haven’t prepared many supplies yet, He was saying, “Do not hesitate because you aren’t prepared, but go now.” To emphasize the urgency of going and preaching the gospel now, Jesus said, “You do not need to prepare money in your belts, you do not need to carry a bag.”
Perhaps, if there is a reason why young people these days are delaying marriage, what would it be? There are various reasons and complex situations for each person, so I am cautious about speaking carelessly and think it is not right to judge easily. However, if there is one reason, the thought of being “unprepared” may very well prevent them from being easily led into marriage. When trying to get married, it can be constantly delayed for reasons like, “I haven’t prepared a stable job yet, so I’ll do it after I get one.” Or often, cases like, “I need to at least arrange a house to live in, but since I haven’t properly secured an apartment yet, I can’t do it yet.” “It’s not the time yet. I’m not ready yet. I’m not in a situation to do it yet.”
Because there are many cases where people hesitate and cannot carry out the mission God is giving them due to such various excuses, Jesus is saying these words. What is needed then is the courage to trust God and step out. If I look at myself, I am only full of deficiencies; if I look at myself, I am not yet ready; if I look at myself, I can only say my life is a zero-point life in many ways. However, before God’s calling, we should not make various excuses like, “I can’t do it. I can’t speak. I’m not good with words. I have no money. I don’t have this yet. I have no time.” If the Lord calls us, we must trust God totally and obey the Lord’s will. It is in this sense that I believe Jesus said, “You don’t need to pack a moneybag, you don’t need to pack a bag.”
Right now, some person has collapsed in front of us. Someone has fallen into the water and is dying. Someone has met a robber and lies there bleeding. Seeing that situation, do we say to that person, “Wait just a moment. Wait just a moment. I will enter medical school now, get my doctor’s license, and then come back and help you. I’m not ready to help you yet. You are bleeding now, but please endure and wait just a moment. I will study hard from now on, enter medical school, become a doctor, and then come and help you”? Can you do that? Someone has fallen into the water and is dying, and you say, “Wait just a moment. I will learn swimming hard from now on, get my emergency rescue certification, and then come and help you.” Can you do that?
Rather, if an urgent task is placed before us right now, if there is an emergency situation where a life must be saved, even if I am still lacking and weak, I should not make excuses. Instead of making this or that excuse about being unprepared, I must obey the voice of God calling me at that moment and confess, “I am lacking, but I will obey in the midst of trusting and relying on God.” It is in this sense that Jesus said you don’t need a moneybag, you don’t need a bag, extra sandals, or extra clothes. However, in today’s passage from Luke, Jesus is saying something that sounds like the exact opposite to the disciples. He says, now, take a moneybag. If you don’t have money, take a moneybag. And take supplies needed for the journey.
When He says to take a bag, does it mean take only the bag? It means take all the various supplies that go inside it. If you don’t have a sword, what should you do? He says if you have no sword, sell your cloak and buy a sword to pack. What is the reason Jesus is speaking this way? Is He saying this in the sense that God’s help can no longer exist, that God might not help us, so now we must defend ourselves with our own strength and find our own way to live, that God can give no help? That is not the case. God always helps. What kind of God is He? He hears when we pray, and helps when we request help. Because God is the God who always knows before we pray and reaches out a hand of response, we must firmly believe that He is still the God who helps us.
However, if there is a reason Jesus is saying this to the disciples right before He bears the cross, it is because they are in an urgent situation where a spiritual battle is about to occur. Of course, there has never been a single time in our lives when there was no spiritual battle. A spiritual battle is always placed before us. However, there are times when situations arrive that specifically make us prone to collapse. Ahead of the very serious situation where Jesus bears the cross and difficulty and suffering arrive, Jesus is saying this in the sense that now might be more dangerous, so prepare thoroughly for it. But as Jesus told them to prepare, what did He say to prepare? Did He say take a moneybag? Then should we work hard to save money? We would need to save money.
Since money is needed to do anything, whatever you do, moving costs money, doing something needs money, whatever work you do costs money—so did Jesus mean that in order to carry out some ministry or obey the Lord’s word, we must earn a lot of money, and thus told us to take a moneybag? Did He say this in the sense of taking a bag and a sword, to prepare spears and swords well because we have to fight, and pack weapons for battle? We need to remember that Jesus’ words did not mean we literally should pack money and swords. The reason Jesus said to take a moneybag, take a bag, and take a sword or weapons is that He spoke in a parable.
Jesus always used parables when speaking to His disciples. One day, while walking on the road, He said to them, “Be careful of the leaven.” When Jesus said to be careful of the leaven, the disciples began to murmur among themselves, saying, “Ah, we didn’t bring bread. If we leave bread unattended, leaven will grow there and we won’t be able to eat it. Oh no, we didn’t bring bread.” However, when Jesus told the disciples to be careful of the leaven, He didn’t mean to be careful of actual leaven, but spoke in a parable. What kind of parable was it? He said to be careful of the leaven of the false teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees—the false teachings. He wasn’t talking about literal leaven. Jesus spoke to the nation of Israel, saying:
“Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” So, was Jesus telling them to literally destroy the temple? No. It wasn’t about destroying the temple, but a parable saying that even if you nail my body to the cross and kill me, I will rise again in three days. He wasn’t talking about the physical temple, but speaking in a parable that if you hang Jesus’ body—which performs the role of the temple—on the cross, it won’t end there, but I will rise again in three days. Furthermore, Jesus said: “Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.” At that time, the Samaritan woman at the well said in surprise: “Lord, give me this water. Give me this water.” But the water Jesus spoke of was not this kind of water.
Jesus was saying that He would die on the cross and give His life to us, and that He would give Himself in the sense of solving our spiritual thirst and hunger. Similarly, when Jesus speaks in parables, those words are always spoken in a spiritual sense.
When He says shouldn’t you take a moneybag, take a bag, and now buy a sword and prepare a sword, just as funds are needed, military funds are needed, supplies are needed, and war materials are needed if you are to actually wage war… Like the war currently going on in the Middle East, where military funds are needed to win, and like the demand for more than 2,000 million dollars more, saying more money is needed, so bring more missiles and more fighter jets—just as you must gather more swords and more weapons to win a war, Jesus is speaking these words in the sense of telling us to prepare thoroughly for our spiritual war. What is placed before us now, what is waiting for the disciples? A spiritual war is waiting.
The war that is terrifying for us is not a worldly war but a spiritual war. A worldly war can end our lives, but a spiritual war is a more terrifying war that can annihilate our souls and lead us completely to ruin. To win that war, Jesus is saying prepare military funds, supplies, and weapons in the sense that preparation is needed to win the spiritual war. What kind of battle is our battle? It is spoken of in Ephesians 6:12 (ESV): “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” A wrestling match with the forces of evil spirits trying to tear us down is placed before us, and He said a spiritual battle is placed before us.
So Jesus spoke these words in John 18:36 (ESV): “Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.’” Jesus is now proclaiming the kingdom of God and ministering as the King of this kingdom, but what kind of kingdom is His? It is not a kingdom that must win by fighting Rome, not a kingdom that must win by fighting King Herod or by fighting worldly regimes to seize victory. It is the kingdom of God that has a war to win by fighting invisible powers, the power of Satan, and the power of the devil. Therefore, Jesus was saying that a spiritual battle must be fought.
Thus, to tell them to prepare thoroughly for such a spiritual battle, He taught them using the language of preparing for a worldly war. Therefore, when the soldiers came to arrest Jesus to nail Him to the cross, Peter drew his sword and began to resist. He swung the sword, asking where they were taking our Jesus, and cut off the ear of the high priest’s servant. At that time, looking at Peter, did Jesus say, “Peter, thank you so much. There is no one but you. I told you to prepare a sword and you did. I told you to prepare a sword for this time, well done. Thank you”? Jesus did not say that.
It was because Jesus’ war was not about fighting the enemies right in front of us. So what did Jesus say? Toward Peter, in Matthew 26:52 (ESV), He said: “Then Jesus said to him, ‘Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword.’” He was saying those who fight the worldly battle will eventually perish, and that our battle is not a physical battle but a spiritual one. How can we win? How can we cultivate spiritual combat power? How is spiritual preparation possible? First, we must properly know who our enemy is. Our enemy is not in front of us but inside us.
The person in front of us is not my enemy. When the person in front of us challenges us, criticizes us, swears at us, and torments us, there is Satan who initiates a spiritual battle within us to tear down our hearts. He whispers to us, “Give up. You can never win,” or he makes us angry, saying, “Get angry, crush that person. Don’t just leave them be, show them what for.” When the temptation of Satan—which makes us angry, makes us despair, makes us lose heart, makes us greedy, and makes us fall—is working in our hearts, winning that fight against Satan is the victory of the spiritual battle.
Jesus telling us to prepare a moneybag, a bag, and weapons is not a word to fight the people in front of us, trample them, take worldly political power, and defeat all our worldly adversaries to seize complete worldly victory. Rather, He is saying this in the sense that thorough spiritual preparation is needed to defeat the temptation of Satan who is tripping us up in our hearts—in the sense that battle preparation in our hearts is necessary. Jesus is now in a situation where He must bear the cross in just a few days. Seeing the scene of their teacher Jesus being nailed to the cross and the wretched sight of Him being buried in a tomb, the disciples’ hearts will begin to be completely shaken by Satan’s temptation.
There will be temptations to betray Jesus and run away, temptations to despair, temptations to get angry—when there are numerous temptations, we need to prepare thoroughly to win spiritually and respond to the calling with which God called us. How shall we prepare, and what are the weapons, the military funds, and the supplies we must prepare? Ephesians 6:10–18 (ESV) teaches us this: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.”
I believe this is the spiritual preparation. How did the Lord win? Toward the people who spat on Him, the people who insulted, swore at, and mocked Him, the people who flogged Him and nailed Him to the cross—Jesus did not mobilize the twelve legions of angels to crush them. Satan could have placed the temptation in Jesus’ heart: “Aren’t you the Son of God? Come down from the cross, then they won’t be able to budge. Bring twelve legions or more of angels and completely crush those fellows. They won’t be able to budge.” However, the Lord prepared with prayer. He did not cast aside the mission of the cross and just come down according to Satan’s temptation; instead, by totally obeying God’s will on the cross, He defeated the power of Satan and won. The content of the prayer the Lord prayed on the cross: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
Beloved saints, the world we live in today is always a world with spiritual battle. Every moment, Satan goads us in our hearts and trips us up. “Do you have no pride? Just get angry. Are you going to just stay still while you are losing out? You’ll lose everything, so to avoid losing, get angry and abuse your power. To avoid losing, show them you are alive.” He continues to goad us. Also, he goads us to close the doors of our hearts. “It’s because you are keeping your heart open. Close it, don’t act like you know them. Just ignore them.” He keeps goading us. Furthermore, he whispers to us: “You are a useless life. You have no qualification. You are a failure. You have no value.” He keeps speaking words that tear us down. Also, he shouts toward our spirits: “Money is what saves you. To get money, just cast aside your conscience to the end; just settle it with a lie. If you step forward for righteousness, only you will lose out.” Before the temptation of Satan who keeps goading our hearts and trying to trip us up, I hope we all can listen to the Lord’s voice today.
I believe we must all become those who win the spiritual war by preparing military funds in our hearts, preparing supplies, and preparing weapons. Praying to be always alert, to always read and meditate on God’s word and win by faith—I pray in the name of the Lord that every moment, not just this one hour here, but in all places of our lives, we all may win as lives of worshippers.
