오늘 우리는 도마의 이야기를 함께 살펴보려고 하는데요. 도마라고 하는 제자는 예수님께서 다른 제자들에게 나타나셨을 때에, 부활하신 후에 제자들에게 나타나셔서 예수님께서 부활하셨다고 하는 것을 보여주시는 그 시간에 도마는 그 자리에 없었습니다. 요한복음 20장 24절에서 이렇게 기록하고 있는 것이죠. “열두 제자 중의 하나로서 디두모라 불리는 도마는 예수께서 오셨을 때에 함께 있지 아니한지라” 기록하고 있는데요. 도마가 그 자리에, 예수님께서 나타나셨을 그 상황에 그 자리에 없었던 이유를 혹시 아시는 분 계십니까? 저도 모릅니다. 성경에 그 이유를 기록하고 있지 않기 때문에 왜 도마가 그 순간에 그 자리에 없었는지에 대해서는 알 수가 없습니다. 아마 사정이 있었겠지요. 반드시 그 자리에 있어야만 했던 것도 아니었을 거라고 생각이 듭니다.
하지만 그 자리에 있지 아니한 그 이유는 알 수 없지만, 그 자리에 없음으로 말미암아 빚어진 결과에 대해서는 우리가 충분히 짐작하고도 남음이 있습니다. 그 자리에 있지 아니함으로 말미암아 다른 제자들은 예수님을 만나고 그래서 부활하신 주님을 만난 그 기쁨으로 인해서 정말 그 마음이 너무나도 기쁜 상태에서 살아가고 있었지만, 도마라고 하는 이 제자는 그 기간 동안에 여전히 혼란 가운데, 여전히 근심 가운데 지낼 수밖에 없었던 것이죠. 무려 8일 동안이나 다른 제자들은 너무나도 흥분이 되고 너무나도 기쁘고 너무나도 행복한 그 시간을 보내고 있었던 그 기간에, 유독 도마라고 하는 이 사람만큼은 여전히 슬픔 가운데 여전히 고통 가운데 혼란스러운 가운데 지내고야 말았다고 하는 것이 결과라고 하겠습니다. 저는 목회를 하면서 늘 느끼고 있었던 것이 있는데요. 그것은 있어야 할 자리에 있는 것이 참 중요하다라고 하는 것입니다.
없어야 할 자리에 없고 있어야 될 자리에 있는 것, 그것이 정말 가벼운 것처럼 보이지만 정말 중요하다라고 하는 것을 새삼 느낄 때가 참 많이 있습니다. 있어야 했던 그 자리에 없어서, 그 자리에 없었던 이유가 무엇이었든지 간에 그 자리에 없음으로 말미암아 점점 믿음이 떨어지고 믿음이 연약해지고 결국에는 그 믿음의 길에서부터 떨어져 나가는 경우를 종종 보게 되었던 것이죠. 성도의 교제의 자리라고 하든지 예배의 자리라고 하든지, 우리가 함께 모여서 예배하기도 하고 함께 교제하기도 하는 그 과정들이 정말 중요하다고 할 수가 있겠는데요.
특별히 예배의 자리라고 하는 것이 얼마나 중요한가… 정말 예배의 자리에 나와서 하나님 앞에 같이 예배하고 찬양하고 기도하고 말씀을 듣고 하는 이 일이 정말 중요하다고 할 수가 있겠는데, 많은 사람들이 그런 일들을 종종 빠지게 되고 때로는 등한시하게 되고 예배의 자리를 쉽게 빠지는 경우가 있는데 아마 그렇게 쉽게 빠지게 되는 이유가 있다면 이런 생각을 하기 때문이 아닐까 싶어요. “예배는 늘 드리기 때문에 매주 예배를 드리는데 그 많은 예배 가운데서 한 번쯤 빠지는 거, 그냥 몇 번 빠지는 거 그렇게 큰 문제가 되겠는가”라고 생각하는 것이죠. 어쩌다가 밥 한 번 굶는다고 죽는 게 아니잖아요. 그러니까 어쩌다가 밥 한 번 굶었다고 해서 완전히 그 사람의 인생이 끝나는 것이 아닌 것과 마찬가지로, 늘 있는 예배, 늘 우리가 만나는 그 교제, 늘 하는 거기에서 한두 번 그냥 빠지는 것이 그렇게 큰 문제가 되겠는가 하면서 가볍게 넘기는 경우가 많이 있는 것 같습니다.
특별히 우리가 예배가 일상화되다 보면 예배 가운데 감동도 없고 어떤 때는 그냥 무기력하게 졸다만 가는 것 같기도 하고, 어떤 때는 내가 예배에 참석한 그런 의미를 못 찾는 것 같기도 하고, 어떤 친구의 모임 가운데 별로 나는 소외를 당하는 것 같은 느낌을 받기도 하고 때로는 따분하기도 하고 지루한 그런 경험도 있어서, 그래서 큰 의미를 찾지 못하는 경우가 많이 있고 그래서 그 열정들이 식어버려서 예배의 자리에 나오는 것을 등한시하거나 또는 성도의 교제의 자리에서 빠져버리는 것이 별로 아무렇지도 않게 생각되는 경우가 있는 것이죠. 뿐만 아니라 무엇이 우리의 발목을 잡을 때가 있습니까? 때로는 내 형편이 너무나도 좋지 못해서 그래서 사람들이 모여 있는 그곳에 가는 것을 두려워하거나 때로는 꺼리게 되는 경우가 많이 있습니다.
어디에 좋은 직장에 취직이 돼서 좋은 소식이 있으면 나오지만, 그러나 내가 꿈꾸던 그런 직장에 지원을 했지만 좋은 결과를 얻지 못하게 되었을 때, 또는 좋은 대학에 가고 싶었지만 가지 못하게 되었을 때, 여러 가지 내 형편이 다른 사람들 앞에 드러내놓을 만한 것이 못 되었을 때 사람들은 그 자리를 피하고 싶은 그런 느낌을 받게 되는 것이죠. 또 어떤 때 그런 느낌을 받게 됩니까? 부부 싸움을 해서 기분이 참 힘들 때, 내 마음이 너무나도 힘들 때 사람들이 있는 곳에 나아가는 것이 어렵다 생각이 되기도 하고 때로는 비가 와서 못 오겠다고 하고 그런 경우가 많이 있는 것이죠. 하지만 성경에서 우리에게 권면하고 있는 그 권면이 무엇입니까? 히브리서 10장 24절에서 25절의 말씀 가운데 이렇게 권면합니다. “서로 돌아보아 사랑과 선행을 격려하며 모이기를 폐하는 어떤 사람들의 습관과 같이 하지 말고 오직 권하여 그 날이 가까움을 볼수록 더욱 그리하자” 권면하고 있는 것이지요.
서로 권면해서 서로 이야기를 해서 함께 모이고 함께 예배하고 교제를 나누는 이것이 얼마나 중요한가, 이게 너무나도 중요해 얼마나 중요한지 몰라요. 그 말은 늘 반복되고 늘 하는 것이고 그래서 어쩌다 한 번쯤 빼먹어도 괜찮을 것 같은 그런 것처럼 보이는데 그게 아니라는 거예요. 대단한 선수들을 보면 어떻게 합니까? 대단한 선수들은 잠시도 쉬지 않습니다. 예를 들어서 손흥민 선수와 같은 선수는 그 정도의 축구 실력이 있습니까? 하루쯤 연습 안 해도 실력이 줄어들지 않겠지요. 그런데 보면 매일 연습해요. 세계적인 첼리스트가 있는데 그 첼리스트가 90의 나이가 되었는데도 매일매일 연습해요. 왜 연습하는가? 연습하지 아니하면 안 된다는 거예요. 매일매일 하는 거예요. 또 반복하고 또 반복하는 거죠.
우리가 어떻게 해야 되는가? 우리가 마음을 다해서 함께 예배하는 자리에 참여하고 우리가 함께 교제하는 자리에 참여하고… 의미가 없다고 생각하고 내가 지루하다고 생각하고 따분하다고 생각하고 아무 의미가 없다고 생각하면서 그냥 안시해버리고 그냥 지나쳐버리는 것이 아니라, 그런 것으로 인해서 우리의 믿음들이 흔들리기 시작해버린다고 하는 경각심을 가지고 함께 모이기를 폐하는 그런 모습을 가질 것이 아니라 더욱더 함께 서로 격려하면서 모이기를 힘쓰는 우리 모두가 다 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 특별히 마음이 힘들 때일수록 사람들 보기 민망하고 내 처지가 너무나도 힘들수록 어떻게 해야 되는가? 예배의 자리로 나와야 되는 거예요.
예배의 자리에 나오면 하나님의 말씀으로 다시 위로를 받고 다시 새 힘을 얻고 하나님께서 부어주시는 은혜를 경험하게 되고… 늘 드리는 예배이기 때문에 아무것도 아닌 것처럼 생각되지만 그 자리에서 하나님께서 때로는 우리의 심령을 들고 움직여주시는 하나님의 은혜를 체험하게 되기도 하고, 그래서 힘들고 어려울 때 주님 앞에 나와 예배하다가 하나님께서 주시는 은혜 때문에 다시 마음의 회복을 얻어서 부부 사이가 다시 회복되기도 하고, 힘들고 절망적인 상황 가운데 포기하고 싶어도 주님 앞에 나와서 함께 예배를 드리다가 다시 새 힘과 용기를 얻게 되기도 하고… 힘들고 어려울수록 어떻게 해야 되는가? 그냥 숨어 들어가 버리지 말고 방 속에 처박히지 말고 함께 나와서 교제하고 또 함께 나와서 예배하는 자리에 나올 때 우리가 다시 새 힘과 용기를 얻게 되는 그런 놀라운 유익이 있는 줄로 믿습니다. 한나라고 하는 여인은 너무나도 힘들었어요.
브닌나라고 하는 그 여인이 자신을 괴롭게 하고 너무나도 고통스러운 그 상황 가운데서 한나는 그냥 처박혀버려서 아무 일도 하지 아니하고 그냥 굴속으로 숨어 들어가는 것이 아니라, 하나님 앞에 기도하는 자리로 나와서 기도하는 가운데 하나님의 놀라운 은혜를 입게 되고 하나님의 약속을 얻게 되어서 하나님의 그 베풀어주신 은혜를 체험하고 놀라운 회복이 있었다고 하는 그 사실을 오늘도 우리가 기억하면서 하나님 앞에 나아가고 주 앞에 나올 수 있는 그런 결단들이 있어야 될 줄로 믿습니다.
도마라고 하는 사람은 예배의 자리는 아니었지만 안타깝게도 예수님께서 부활하셔서 슬픔 가운데 있는 제자들에게 기쁨을 주시고 절망 가운데 있던 제자들 가운데 소망을 주시는 그 현장 가운데서 도마는 그 자리에 있지 아니함으로 말미암아 8일 동안의 혼란 가운데서 두려움 가운데서 절망 가운데서 지낼 수밖에 없었는데, 좀 더 일찍 알았더라면 얼마나 좋았을까 바로 그 자리에 있었더라면 얼마나 좋았을까… 매일매일 우리가 하나님 앞에 나아가고 은혜의 자리를 사모하며 우리가 정말 하나님의 은혜 가운데 나아가는 것을 소망하면서 살아가는 우리 모두가 다 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 놀라운 것은 예수님께서 그런 도마 한 사람을 위해서 다시 찾아오셨습니다. 바로 이 도마 한 사람을 위해서 예수님께서 오신 것이죠.
주님께서는 아직도 의심하며 불안에 떨고 있고 혼란 가운데 있는 이 도마를 믿음이 없는 사람이라고 말하면서 그냥 배척해버리고 내팽개쳐버리고 지나쳐 버린 것이 아니라, 순전히 이 도마 한 사람을 위해서 예수님께서는 다시 찾아오셨습니다. 이게 바로 예수님의 마음인 것이죠. 예수님께서는 어떻게 십자가를 지셨는가? 나 한 사람만이라도 주님께서는 십자가를 지실 주님이신 거예요. 다른 모든 사람들을 위해서가 아니라 바로 나를 위하여서 다시 찾아오시고 다시 은혜를 베풀어 주시는 예수님의 모습을 볼 수가 있는 것이죠. 바로 그 예수님께서 도마에게 나타나셔서 정말 예수님께서 부활하셨다고 하는 사실을 보여주게 되자, 그러자 도마는 그 순간 모든 것이 무너져 버리고 말았습니다. 그동안 가지고 있었던 마음의 담장들을 다 내려놓고 주님께 나아가지 못했던 그 걸림돌들을 다 내려놓고 주님의 앞에 나아가 고백하게 된 것이죠. 이 도마는 제자들을 향해서 무슨 이야기를 했습니까?
“내가 그의 손의 못 자국을 보며 내 손가락을 그 못 자국에 넣으며 내 손을 그 옆구리에 넣어 보지 않고는 믿지 아니하겠노라” 내가 내 눈으로 예수님의 손에 그 못 자국을 직접 보지 않고는 내 손가락으로 예수님의 그 상처에 손을 직접 넣어보지 않고는 내가 예수님이 부활했다고 하는 사실을 도무지 믿지 않겠다고 그렇게 강하게 이야기했던 사람인데, 바로 이 도마가 예수님 앞에 엎드리게 된 겁니다. “나의 주님이시요 나의 하나님이시니이다” 예수님의 부활은 누가 증언했는가? 그렇게 처음에는 믿을 수 없다고 부인했던 사람들이 정말 부인할 수 없을 정도로 확실한 예수님의 부활을 경험하고서, 그런 사람들이 나와서 예수님이 부활하셨다고 하는 사실을 전했기 때문에 그 복음이 오늘날 우리들에게까지 전해진 거라고 할 수가 있겠는데요.
대표적인 케이스가 바로 그 도마의 케이스이고, 또한 대표적인 케이스가 바로 사도 바울의 케이스인 거죠. 사도 바울은 예수님의 제자 가운데 있지 않았어요. 사도 바울은 예수님께서 계실 때 예수님의 제자 중에 한 사람도 아니었어요. 오히려 교회를 핍박하고 정반대에서 예수님이 부활했다고 하는 그런 거짓말을 내가 인정할 수 없다고 하면서 교회를 핍박하는 데 앞장섰던 바로 그 사람이 예수님을 만나게 된 후에, 부활하신 예수님을 경험하고 난 다음에 완전히 180도로 변화되어서 자신이 가지고 있던 모든 기득권들을 다 내려놓고 가만히만 있어도 승승장구할 수 있었고 가만히만 있어도 행복한 삶을 살 수 있었던 그 바울 사도가 자신이 가지고 있던 모든 것들을 다 배설물로 내려놓고 예수님을 전하기 위해서 고난의 길로, 예수님을 전하기 위해서 결혼도 하지 아니하고 완전히 자신의 모든 생애를 다 바치면서 감옥에도 갇히고 모진 매를 맞으면서 고난을 당하는 가운데서도 그럼에도 불구하고 예수님을 전하는 그런 사람으로 변화된 그 놀라운 역사가 성경에 기록되어 있는 겁니다. 그런데 오늘 예수님께서 도마에게 해주셨던 말씀이 오늘 우리가 주목해 보아야 할 말씀입니다.
요한복음 20장 29절의 말씀에 “예수께서 이르시되 너는 나를 본 고로 믿느냐 보지 못하고 믿는 자들은 복되도다” 하셨습니다. 예수님께서 제자 도마가 도무지 믿으려고 하지 않았지만 예수님이 나타나신 것을 보고 그제서야 믿게 된 그 도마를 향해서 예수님께서 하시는 말씀이 “너는 나를 본 고로 믿느냐” 말씀하시며 보지 못하고 믿는 자가 복되다고 말씀해 주셨는데요. 오늘 우리가 이 주님의 말씀을 한번 깊이 묵상해 보았으면 좋겠습니다. 보지 못하고 믿는 것이 정말 바람직한 것이라고 할 수가 있는 것일까요? 우리가 보지 못했더라도 아무런 증거가 없다고 할지라도 믿는 것이 바람직한 것이라고 말할 수 있습니까? 찬송가에 보면 “눈에는 아무 증거 아니 보여도” 믿음만을 가지고서 걸어가야 한다고 하는 그런 찬송가도 있는데, 우리의 믿음이라고 하는 것은 증거가 없어도 아무런 눈에 보이는 증거가 없다고 할지라도 무조건 믿어야 하는 것이 그게 잘하는 것일까요?
묻지도 말고 따지지도 말고 팥으로 메주를 쑨다고 할지라도 그냥 믿어버리는 것, 그냥 우리의 이성은 내버리고 그냥 믿는 것이 그게 바로 주님께서 우리에게 원하시는 것이라고 할 수가 있는 것일까요? 정답은 그렇지 않습니다. 예수님께서 보지 못하고 믿는 자가 복되다고 말씀하셨지만, 그러나 성경에는 정반대의 말씀도 많이 기록되어 있기 때문인 것이죠. 우리는 성경을 읽으면서 어느 한 구절에 있는 말씀만 바라볼 것이 아니라 성경 전체에서 무슨 이야기를 하고 있는지 골고루 골고루 전체적인 의미를 다 살펴보아야 하는데요. 그러지 아니하고 성경에 나온 몇몇 표현들만을 마치 금과옥조처럼 생각하면서 그것이 전부인 거라고 생각한다고 하면 안 되는 것이고, 성경 전체의 가르침이 무엇인가를 따져보면서 정말 하나님께서 우리에게 원하시는 것이 무엇인가, 주님께서 우리에게 가르치시고자 하는 메시지가 무엇인가에 대해서 생각해 보아야 하는 것이죠.
예수님께서는 보지 못하고 믿는 자가 복되다고 말씀하셨지만 또한 성경 다른 곳에서는 정반대로 말씀해 주시는 말씀도 있습니다. 예를 들면 어느 말씀일까요? 요한일서 4장 1절의 말씀이죠. “사랑하는 자들아 영을 다 믿지 말고 오직 영들이 하나님께 속하였나 분별하라 많은 거짓 선지자가 세상에 나왔음이라” 우리가 이야기를 들을 때마다 설교자가 강단 위에서 설교를 하면 무조건 아멘으로 받아들여야 되는가? 하나님의 말씀이니까 강단 위에서 선포되는 말씀은 하나님의 말씀을 풀어서 우리에게 전해주시는 것이니까 무조건 아멘으로 받아들이는 것이 그것이 유익한 것이라고 말할 수가 있겠는가? 그것이 경우에 따라 다를 수 있다고 하는 의미입니다. 강단에서 들려지는 메시지는 무조건 아멘 하면서 무슨 말을 전하든지, 강단 위에서 목사님이 선포하는 말씀이라고 한다면 무슨 말을 해도 아멘으로 대답하고 그 말에 무조건 따라야만 하는 것인가… 요한일서 4장 1절에서는 아니라고 말씀하고 있는 겁니다.
강단 위에서 선포되는 그 메시지가 정말 하나님에게 속한 말씀인지, 하나님께서 우리에게 전해주고자 하는 그 말씀인지 아닌지 분별해야만 하는데, 왜냐하면 이 세상에 수많은 거짓 선지자가 나왔기 때문이고, 강단을 이용해서 잘못된 메시지를, 하나님께서 우리에게 전하는 메시지가 아니라 사람의 말을 전하고 사탄의 말을 전하고 전혀 다른 메시지, 성경과는 다른 가르침을 전하는 경우가 많이 있기 때문에 영들이 하나님께 속하였나 그 메시지가 과연 하나님께서 우리에게 전해주시는 말씀인가 분별해야 한다고 성경은 우리에게 가르쳐 주고 있습니다.
성경은 우리에게 이 세상에 수많은 거짓 선지자들이 나와 있어서 마치 양의 옷을 입고 있지만 그 속에는 우리의 모든 것들을 다 노략질하는 이리와 같은 자가, 겉으로 보면 정말 하나님의 선지자 같고 겉으로 보면 거룩한 사람처럼 보이지만 신분은 모든 것이 완벽해 보이지만, 사실은 그 속에서 전하는 말이 하나님의 말씀을 전해서 우리의 영혼을 풍성하게 하는 것이 아니라 사실은 우리들을 착취하고 우리의 모든 것들을 빼앗아 버려서 우리를 파멸로 만들어버리는 그런 악한 잘못된 메시지가 있다고 성경은 경고하고 있는 겁니다. 뿐만 아니라 성경은 어떻게 이야기하고 있는가? 심지어 기적을 행하면서 기적을 보여주면서 메시지를 전할 때 그 기적을 보면서 무조건 그 메시지를 들을 것이 아니라, 그 경우에도 메시지를 분별하라고 권면하고 있습니다. 신명기 13장 1절에서 3절 가운데 이렇게 표현하고 있는 것이죠.
“너희 중에 선지자나 꿈꾸는 자가 일어나서 이적과 기사를 네게 보이고 그가 네게 말한 그 이적과 기사가 이루어지고 너희가 알지 못하던 다른 신들을 우리가 따라 섬기자고 말할지라도 너는 그 선지자나 꿈꾸는 자의 말을 청종하지 말라 이는 너희의 하나님 여호와께서 너희가 마음을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 너희의 하나님 여호와를 사랑하는 여부를 알려 하사 너희를 시험하심이니라” 하셨습니다. 오늘날에는 그 옛날처럼 그렇게 노골적으로 다른 신을 섬기자고 말하는 자가 없겠지만, 그러나 하나님을 섬기자고 말하면서도 사실은 돈의 신을 이야기하는 자가 있을 수가 있겠고 성공과 탐욕이 우리가 추구해야 할 것이라고 이야기하며 잘못된 메시지를 전하는 경우가 얼마나 많이 있는지 모릅니다. 그래서 어떻게 해야 되는가? 우리가 무조건 보지 못하고 증거가 없는데도 불구하고 무조건 믿어버리는 것, 덮어놓고 믿는 것이 옳은 것이 아니라 우리는 분별해야 할 필요가 있다고 성경의 다른 쪽에서는 이야기하고 있는 것이죠.
한편으로는 예수님께서 보지 못하고 믿는 자가 복되다고 말씀하시고, 또 한편에서는 함부로 믿지 말고 분별해야 한다고 하는 이 양쪽의 말씀이 있는데 우리는 어느 장단에 맞추어서 춤을 추어야 하는 걸까요? 보지 못하고 믿어야 합니까? 볼 때까지 안 믿어야 합니까? 잘 분별해서 납득이 될 때까지 기다려야 됩니까? 아니면 무조건 믿어야 합니까? 정답은 어디에 있습니까? 정답은 아주 복잡해 보이지만 사실 간단합니다. 무엇인가요? 만일 믿어야 될 것이 진실이라면 믿어야 해요. 만일 우리가 받아들여야 될 것이 진실이라면 진리라고 한다면 우리의 마음의 문을 열고 믿어야 하는 것입니다. 하지만 만일 거짓이라면 분별해서 믿지 말아야 되는 것… 그러니까 우리가 믿어야 될 것이 진실이냐 진리냐 아니냐의 문제인 것이고 참이냐 거짓인가의 문제인 것이죠. 참이라고 하면 어떻게 해야 될 것인가… 미적거리면서 증거를 더 달라 증거를 내놔라 하면서 자꾸만 미적거릴 것이 아니라 진리라고 한다면 받아들여야 되는 거죠.
안타깝게도 바리새인들과 서기관들은 어떻게 했습니까? 예수님께서 오셔서 하나님의 말씀을 전하고 하나님의 나라의 메시지를 전하고 그리고 기적을 행하며 엄청난 하나님의 말씀을 전해주었는데도, 바리새인들은 예수님을 향해서 계속해서 요구하는 겁니다. “내가 하나님에게서 왔다고 하는 증거를 보여달라.” 더 증거를 보여달라 증거를 보여달라고 이야기를 해요. 수많은 메시지를 전하고 하나님의 말씀을 전하고 그리고 기적을 보여주었는데도 그것을 다 받아들이지 않으면서 “더 기적을 내놔라 내가 하나님께로부터 온 표적을 내놓으라”고 하면서 받아들이지 않는 것이죠. 하지만 세리와 죄인들은 예수님 앞에 나와 엎드린 거예요. 주님을 만나는 그 순간에 “나의 주 나의 하나님”이라고 고백하게 된 것이죠. 그런데 우리가 거짓이라면 어떻게 해야 되는가? 단호하게 거부하는 것이 그게 우리가 취해야 될 자세일 것입니다. 그런데 안타깝게도 사람들은 어떻게 하는가? 거꾸로예요. 거꾸로 제대로 해야 되는데 거꾸로 해요.
보이스피싱은 그냥 믿어서 천만 원씩 보내면서, 이단들이 가르치면 그냥 믿으면서 자신의 전 재산을 다 낭비해 버리면서, 참된 진리를 전하고 하나님의 말씀을 제대로 전하면 미적거리면서 받아들이지 않는 그런 어리석은 모습이 우리들의 모습일 때가 많습니다. 그런 모습을 볼 때마다 너무나도 힘이 빠져요. 왜 진리에 대해서는 사람들이 귀를 막아버리는가? 왜 참된 복음에 대해서는 아무런 반응이 없는가? 그런데 거짓 복음을 전하고 이단적인 메시지를 전하고 잘못된 이야기를 하면 거기에 쑥 빠져서 헤어나오지 못하는가, 열정적으로 따라가는가… 한 번은 예전에 이 동네 길을 걸어가는데 어떤 나이 많으신 분이 할머니 한 분이 열심히 뭔가를 나눠주면서 전도를 하더라고요. 도대체 이분이 어떤 분인가 궁금해서 받아봤는데 신천지 이단 전도지를 나눠주고 있어요. 참된 복음을 가지고 있는 사람들은 아무것도 안 하고 있는데 이단들은 저렇게 열심히 하고 있는 그 모습을 보면서 너무나도 안타까운 것이죠.
오늘 우리들이 기도해야 될 기도의 제목이 무엇입니까? “주님 진리에는 우리들의 마음을 열 수 있게 하여 주옵소서. 하지만 거짓된 가르침에는 분별하여 속아 넘어가지 아니하고 분별할 수 있는 지혜를 오늘 우리들에게 허락하여 주옵소서” 기도하며 엎드려야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 우리는 어린아이와 같은 신앙을 가져야 할 텐데요. 이런 어린아이들에게 부모님들은 무슨 이야기를 합니까? 엄마 아빠의 말을 믿고 따르라고 말하는 거죠. 왜냐하면 엄마 아빠가 사랑하기 때문에 우리 자녀들에게 이것도 하라고 하고 저것도 먹으라고 하고 사랑으로 이야기하는 거예요.
그럴 때 어린아이들이 자꾸만 질문을 던지면서 “왜 내가 이걸 해야 해” 하면서 거부할 게 아니라, 아빠 엄마가 나를 사랑한다고 하는 사실을 믿고 신뢰하면서 내가 비록 이해하지 못하더라도 아빠가 내게 해주시는 말씀이니까, 엄마가 내게 하라고 하는 말씀이니까 우리 아이들이 전적으로 믿고 신뢰하고 따라야 하는 것인 반면에, 동시에 우리 부모님이 자녀들을 향해서 경고하는 거죠. “함부로 아무나 따라가면 안 돼. 동네 아줌마가 사탕 주면서 너를 꼬시면 따라가면 안 돼” 이야기하는 것과 마찬가지로 오늘 우리들이 영적으로 하나님을 믿음으로 신뢰하며 나아가는 우리 모두가 되었으면 좋겠습니다. 주님의 말씀을 읽을 때에는 하나님의 말씀을 우리가 온 마음으로 읽고 그리고 받아들이고 그 하나님의 말씀대로 순종하며 살아가는 그런 결단이, 또한 잘못된 것들을 볼 때에는 영적으로 분별하며 하나님의 말씀 가운데 바로 서는 그런 결단들이 우리 모두에게 있을 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
Thomas’s Absence and the Grace of Encounter: Balancing Faith and Vigilance
Today, we want to look at the story of Thomas. When the risen Jesus appeared to the other disciples to show them that He had been resurrected, Thomas was not there with them. John 20:24 (ESV) records: “Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came.” Does anyone know why Thomas was not there at that moment when Jesus appeared? I don’t know either. Since the Bible does not record the reason, we cannot know why Thomas was missing at that specific time. Perhaps there was a reason, or perhaps he didn’t feel it was a place he absolutely had to be.
However, while we don’t know the reason for his absence, we can more than guess the consequences of it. Because he wasn’t there, the other disciples met Jesus and were living with the immense joy of having encountered the risen Lord. Meanwhile, Thomas had to spend that time in confusion and worry. For eight long days, while the other disciples were spending time in excitement, joy, and happiness, Thomas alone remained in sorrow, pain, and confusion. As I lead my ministry, I always feel one thing: it is very important to be in the place where you are supposed to be.
Being in the place you should be and not being in the place you shouldn’t be—it might seem like a small thing, but there are many times I realize anew how vital it is. I have often seen cases where, regardless of the reason, being absent from the place one should be leads to a decline in faith, a weakening of spirit, and eventually, a falling away from the path of faith altogether. Whether it is a place of fellowship or a place of worship, the processes of gathering to worship and fellowship together are truly important.
Specifically, how important is the place of worship? Coming to the place of worship to worship God, praise, pray, and hear the Word together is truly vital. Yet, many people often miss these occasions, neglect them, or easily skip the place of worship. I suspect the reason people skip so easily is because they think like this: “We worship all the time. We have service every week. Will it really be such a big problem if I miss just once or a few times out of so many services?” It’s like skipping a meal. You don’t die just because you skip one meal. Just as skipping one meal doesn’t end a person’s life, many seem to brush it off lightly, thinking that missing one or two gatherings out of the habitual worship and fellowship we always have won’t be a significant issue.
Particularly, as worship becomes routine, it can sometimes feel like there is no inspiration; sometimes it feels like one is just drowsily nodding off, or as if one cannot find the meaning of attending. Sometimes, in a group of friends, one might feel alienated or bored, and because of such experiences, people often fail to find great meaning. As that passion cools, they may neglect coming to worship or think nothing of missing out on the fellowship of the saints. Furthermore, what is it that sometimes holds us back? Sometimes, our circumstances are so poor that we fear or avoid going where people are gathered.
If there is good news, like getting a job at a great company, one might come out. But if you applied for a dream job and didn’t get a good result, or if you wanted to go to a good university but couldn’t—when your circumstances are not something you can proudly show before others—people feel the urge to avoid those gatherings. When else do we feel this way? After a fight with a spouse when feelings are hurt, or when the heart is so weary that going out to others feels difficult. Sometimes people say they can’t come because it’s raining. But what is the exhortation the Bible gives us? Hebrews 10:24–25 (ESV) exhorts us: “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
How important is it to encourage one another, gather together, worship together, and share fellowship? It is incredibly important. You might think that because it is repetitive and done all the time, it’s okay to skip once in a while, but that isn’t true. Look at great athletes. Great athletes never rest for a moment. For example, does a player like Son Heung-min have that level of soccer skill? His skill wouldn’t diminish just because he skipped practice for one day. Yet, he practices every day. There is a world-renowned cellist who, even at the age of 90, practices every single day. Why? Because you cannot do without it. It’s done every day, repeated again and again.
What should we do? We should participate in the place of worship with all our hearts and join in the place of fellowship. We shouldn’t think of it as meaningless, boring, or tedious and just neglect or pass it by. We must have the alertness that our faith can begin to waver because of such things. Instead of having a habit of neglecting to meet, we should all be those who strive all the more to gather while encouraging one another. Especially when the heart is weary, when it’s embarrassing to face people, and when your situation is difficult—that is exactly when you must come to the place of worship.
When you come to the place of worship, you are comforted again by God’s Word, gain new strength, and experience the grace God pours out. Because it is a service we always have, it might seem like nothing, but in that place, we sometimes experience God’s grace as He takes hold of and moves our spirits. When things are hard and we come to worship before the Lord, our relationship with our spouse can be restored because of the grace God gives. Even when we want to give up in a desperate situation, we can gain new strength and courage by coming before the Lord to worship. The harder and more difficult it is, the more we should do this. Instead of just hiding away or staying cooped up in a room, I believe there is a marvelous benefit where we gain new strength and courage when we come out to fellowship and worship together. A woman named Hannah was in a very difficult situation.
In a situation where a woman named Peninnah was tormenting her and she was in such pain, Hannah didn’t just stay cooped up doing nothing or hide in a cave. Instead, she came to the place of prayer before God. In her prayer, she received God’s marvelous grace and obtained His promise, experiencing the grace He bestowed and finding a marvelous restoration. Remembering that fact today, we must have the resolution to go before God and come before the Lord.
In Thomas’s case, although it wasn’t a formal worship service, Jesus had resurrected and was giving joy to disciples in sorrow and hope to disciples in despair. Unfortunately, because Thomas was not there, he had to spend eight days in confusion, fear, and despair. How wonderful it would have been if he had known sooner—if only he had been in that spot. We should all live with the desire to go before God every day, longing for the place of grace and seeking to live within God’s grace. The amazing thing is that Jesus came back again specifically for that one person, Thomas. Jesus came for this one man.
The Lord did not reject, abandon, or pass over this Thomas, who was still doubting, trembling in anxiety, and in confusion, labeling him as a man without faith. Purely for this one person, Thomas, Jesus came back. This is the heart of Jesus. How did Jesus bear the cross? The Lord is the kind of Lord who would bear the cross even if it were for only one person. We can see the image of Jesus coming back and bestowing grace again, not just for everyone else, but specifically for “me.” When that very Jesus appeared to Thomas and showed him the fact that He had truly resurrected, at that moment, everything in Thomas came crumbling down. He laid down all the walls of his heart and the stumbling blocks that had prevented him from going to the Lord, and he confessed before the Lord. What had this Thomas previously said to the disciples?
“Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” He was a man who spoke so strongly, saying he would never believe Jesus had resurrected unless he saw the nail marks with his own eyes and placed his finger and hand into the wounds. Yet, this very Thomas fell prostrate before Jesus, saying, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28, ESV). Who testified to Jesus’ resurrection? People who at first said they couldn’t believe it, but then experienced a resurrection so certain they could no longer deny it—those are the people who went out and preached that Jesus had risen, which is how the Gospel has reached us today.
A representative case is Thomas, and another is the Apostle Paul. Apostle Paul was not among Jesus’ disciples. He wasn’t one of the disciples when Jesus was on earth. Rather, he was the very person who took the lead in persecuting the church, saying he could not accept the “lie” that Jesus had risen. But after he met Jesus and experienced the risen Lord, he changed 180 degrees. He laid down all the vested interests he had—he could have been successful and lived a happy life just by staying still. But Apostle Paul laid down everything he had as “rubbish” and took the path of suffering to preach Jesus. He didn’t marry, dedicated his entire life, was imprisoned, and endured harsh beatings while suffering, yet he was transformed into a person who preached Jesus nonetheless. This marvelous history is recorded in the Bible. But today, the words Jesus spoke to Thomas are the words we must pay attention to.
John 20:29 (ESV) says: “Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’” Toward Thomas, who would not believe at all but only believed after seeing Him appear, Jesus says, “Have you believed because you have seen me?” and says those who believe without seeing are blessed. I want us to deeply meditate on these words of the Lord today. Is believing without seeing truly something desirable? Can we say it is desirable to believe even if we haven’t seen or if there is no evidence? In the hymns, there is a song that says “Even if no evidence is seen by the eyes,” we must walk with only faith. Is it a good thing to believe unconditionally even if there is no visible evidence?
Is it what the Lord wants from us—to just believe without asking or questioning, even if someone says they are making fermented soybean paste out of red beans, setting aside our reason? The answer is “no.” Although Jesus said those who believe without seeing are blessed, there are many opposite words recorded in the Bible as well. We must read the Bible not just by looking at one verse, but by looking at what is being said in the entire Bible as a whole. We cannot just take a few expressions from the Bible as if they are absolute truth and think that is everything. We must consider what the teaching of the entire Bible is, what God truly wants from us, and what message the Lord is trying to teach us.
While Jesus said those who believe without seeing are blessed, there are other places in the Bible that say the opposite. For example, where would that be? 1 John 4:1 (ESV) says: “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.” When we hear a story, if a preacher preaches from the pulpit, should we unconditionally accept it with an “Amen”? Since it is the Word of God, and the word proclaimed from the pulpit is the Word of God being interpreted and delivered to us, is it beneficial to unconditionally accept it with an “Amen”? It means it can vary depending on the case. Should we say “Amen” to whatever message is delivered from the pulpit, following it unconditionally just because it is a word proclaimed by a pastor? 1 John 4:1 says “no.”
We must discern whether the message proclaimed from the pulpit is truly a word that belongs to God—whether it is the word He wants to deliver to us or not. This is because many false prophets have gone out into the world. There are many cases where the pulpit is used to deliver a wrong message—not the message God delivers to us, but the words of man or the words of Satan, a completely different message, or a teaching different from the Bible. The Bible teaches us that we must discern whether those spirits belong to God.
The Bible warns us that there are many false prophets in the world who look like sheep on the outside but are like wolves who plunder everything inside. Outwardly, they look like true prophets of God and holy people; their status might look perfect. However, the words they deliver from within do not enrich our souls with God’s Word; instead, they are wicked, wrong messages that exploit us, take everything away, and lead us to ruin. Furthermore, what does the Bible say? It even exhorts us to discern the message when it is delivered with signs and wonders. Deuteronomy 13:1–3 (ESV) expresses it this way:
“If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder that he tells you comes to pass, and if he says, ‘Let us go after other gods,’ which you have not known, ‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. For the LORD your God is testing you, to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” Today, there might not be anyone who so blatantly tells us to serve other gods as in the old days. However, while saying “Let’s serve God,” there might be those who speak of the god of money, or who say success and greed are what we should pursue, delivering a wrong message. Therefore, what should we do? It is not right to just believe unconditionally and blindly when we haven’t seen and there is no evidence; rather, the other side of the Bible says we need to discern.
On one hand, Jesus says those who believe without seeing are blessed, and on the other, He exhorts us not to believe recklessly but to discern. To which tune should we dance? Should we believe without seeing? Should we not believe until we see? Should we discern well and wait until we are convinced? Or should we believe unconditionally? The answer might look complex, but it is actually simple. What is it? If what we are to believe is the truth, we must believe. If what we are to accept is the truth—the Truth—we must open the doors of our hearts and believe. However, if it is a lie, we must discern and not believe. So it is a matter of whether what we are to believe is true, the truth, or not; it is a matter of truth vs. falsehood. If it is true, what should we do? Instead of hesitating and asking for more evidence, if it is the truth, we must accept it.
Unfortunately, what did the Pharisees and scribes do? Jesus came and delivered God’s Word, delivered the message of the Kingdom of God, and performed miracles while delivering immense words of God. Yet, the Pharisees kept demanding of Jesus, “Show us evidence that you came from God.” They kept asking for more evidence. Even though He delivered countless messages, spoke God’s Word, and showed miracles, they didn’t accept all of that and said, “Give us more miracles; show us a sign from God,” refusing to accept Him. However, the tax collectors and sinners came and prostrated themselves before Jesus. At the moment they met the Lord, they confessed, “My Lord and my God.” But if it is a lie, what should we do? Our stance should be to firmly reject it. Yet, unfortunately, what do people do? It’s the opposite. They should do it properly, but they do it backward.
People easily believe voice phishing and send millions of won. They believe when heretics teach and waste their entire fortunes. But when the true truth is preached and God’s Word is delivered properly, they hesitate and don’t accept it. This foolish image is often our own image. Every time I see this, I feel so drained. Why do people close their ears to the truth? Why is there no response to the true Gospel? Yet, when a false gospel is preached, a heretical message is delivered, or a wrong story is told, why do they fall right in and can’t get out, following it so passionately? Once, while walking down the street in this neighborhood, an elderly woman was passionately handing out something and evangelizing. Curious about who she was, I took what she gave me, and she was handing out Shincheonji heresy leaflets. Seeing that those with the true Gospel are doing nothing while heretics are working so hard—it is so regrettable.
What is the prayer topic we should pray for today? “Lord, let our hearts be open to the truth. But regarding false teachings, grant us the wisdom today to discern and not be deceived.” I believe we should have a faith like that of a child. What do parents tell children like this? They tell them to believe and follow the words of mom and dad. This is because mom and dad love them, so they tell our children to do this or eat that out of love.
In such cases, children shouldn’t just keep asking questions like “Why do I have to do this?” and refuse. Instead, believing and trusting in the fact that dad and mom love them—even if they don’t understand—because it is a word dad says to them, or a word mom tells them to do, our children should totally believe, trust, and follow. At the same time, parents warn their children: “You shouldn’t just follow anyone. If a lady in the neighborhood tries to tempt you with candy, you shouldn’t follow her.” Similarly, I hope we all can move forward trusting and relying on God spiritually. I pray in the name of the Lord that we all can have the resolution to read God’s Word with all our hearts, accept it, and live in obedience to that Word; and also, when we see things that are wrong, to discern spiritually and stand upright within God’s Word.
