오늘 말씀을 보면 지혜를 얻는 자가 생명을 얻는다고 되어 있습니다. 지혜를 얻는 자가 여호와의 은총을 얻을 것이라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 어디서 그렇게 표현하고 있죠? 35절의 말씀 가운데서 그렇게 표현하고 있습니다. 한번 같이 읽어볼까요. “대저 나를 얻는 자는 생명을 얻고 여호와께 은총을 얻을 것임이니라.”
여기서 말하는 “나”가 무엇입니까? 지혜죠. 지혜를 얻는 자는 무엇을 얻을 것이다? “생명”을 얻을 것이다. 지혜를 얻는 자가 무엇을 얻을 것이다? “여호와의 은총”을 얻을 것이라고 말씀하고 있습니다.
그러면 지혜를 얻지 못하고 지혜를 잃어버리면 어떻게 될까요? 정반대의 결과가 나오게 되는 것이겠죠. 36절의 말씀은 이렇게 기록합니다. 또 한번 같이 읽어보십시다. “그러나 나를 잃는 자는 자기의 영혼을 해하는 자라 나를 미워하는 자는 사망을 사랑하느니라.” 여기서도 “나”가 누구 무엇입니까? 지혜죠. 지혜를 잃어버리면 어떻게 될 것이다? 영혼을 해하게 될 것이다. 그런데 이 지혜를 잃어버린다는 말이 무슨 말입니까? 지혜를 잃어버리는 것은 어떻게 잃어버리는 것일까요? 지혜를 사랑하지 않는 것이죠. 지혜를 들려줘도 그 말에 따라, 지혜에 따라 행하는 것이 아니라 지혜와는 반대의 길로 가는 것이고, 지혜를 잃어버린다는 것, 물건처럼 잃어버릴 수 있는 것은 아니니까 도대체 지혜를 잃어버린다는 말이 무슨 말입니까? 지혜를 잃어버린다는 것은 지혜의 말씀이 있는데 그 지혜의 말씀대로 따라 살지 않고 정반대의 길로 가는 것이죠. 사랑하지 않는 것이죠. 지혜의 말씀을 들려주면 싫어하는 것이죠. 지혜에 따라 살지 않게 되면 영원히 해함을 입을 것이고 결국에는 사망의 길로 가게 되는 것이라고 오늘 잠언서 8장의 말씀 가운데서 가르쳐주고 있습니다. 이 말씀의 의미가 무엇일까요. 문자 그대로입니다. 지혜가 정말 중요하다고 하는 것이죠.
지혜가 무엇입니까? 지혜가 다른 것이 지혜가 아니고 하나님을 경외하는 것이 지혜라고 했습니다. 하나님을 두려워하는 것이 지혜라고 했습니다. 하나님의 말씀대로 순종하며 사는 것이 지혜고, 하나님께서 말씀해 주시는 대로 따라 살고, 이 하나님의 말씀대로 살지 않는다면 내게 큰 화가 있을 것이라고 생각하고 하나님을 두려워할 줄 아는 것이 지혜라고 말씀을 드렸는데요. 그렇게 하나님을 두려워하며 살아야 생명을 얻는다고 오늘 본문의 말씀 가운데서 가르쳐주고 있습니다.
지혜를 얻어야 생명을 얻는다고 표현하고 있는 이 말씀은 그 말씀을 다른 표현으로 변경해서 이해하자면 어떻게 이해할 수 있을까요? 지혜를 통해서 생명을 얻는다는 이야기는 지혜가 아닌 다른 것들로서는 생명을 얻을 수 없다는 말입니다. 예를 들자면 어떤 것을 통해서는 생명을 얻을 수 없다는 것일까요? 이 세상의 모든 것이죠. 우리가 생각하기에 이것은 우리를 살릴 수 있을 것이다, 이것은 우리들에게 힘을 줄 수 있을 것이다, 이것이 우리들의 소망일 것이다라고 생각되는 그 모든 것들이 우리에게 생명을 주는 게 아니라는 것입니다.
우리는 흔히 생각하기를 돈이 우리에게 생명을 줄 것이라고 생각을 합니다. 그래서 돈이 많이 있으면 좋겠다, 돈만 있으면 문제가 해결되겠다고 생각을 합니다. 하지만 오늘 본문의 말씀 가운데서 지혜를 얻는 자가 생명을 얻는다는 이야기가 무슨 이야기입니까? 돈으로서는 생명을 얻을 수 없다는 이야기예요. 뿐만 아니라 우리는 생각하기를 좋은 대학에 들어가야 행복할 것이라고 생각합니다. 좋은 대학에 들어가야 그래야 내가 복을 얻는 것이고 좋은 대학에 들어가야 내가 생명을 얻을 것이라고 생각하는데 그게 아니라는 말이에요. 이 세상에서 인기를 얻는 것이 그것이 좋은 것이고 사람들의 박수를 얻는 것이 그게 좋은 것이라고 우리들은 생각하고 있는데, 오늘 성경 말씀은 그것을 말하는 것이 아니라 그런 것들이 우리를 살리는 것이 아니라, 돈이 우리를 살리는 것이 아니라, 이 세상의 그 어떤 것이 우리를 살리는 것이 아니라 지혜가 우리를 살리는 것이다, 지혜를 얻는 자가 생명을 얻는 것이라고 말씀하고 있다는 이 사실을 분명하게 기억할 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
이스라엘 민족은 광야 40년 동안 훈련을 받는 기간이 있었습니다. 애굽 땅에서부터 해방되어 홍해 바다를 건너고 그리고 저 가나안 땅에 들어가기까지 40년이라는 기간을 광야에서 지내야만 했었는데요. 이 광야 40년의 기간은 하나님께서 이스라엘 민족을 훈련시키고 또 훈련시키고 또 훈련시키는 훈련의 장이었습니다. 그런데 하나님께서 이 광야 40년 동안 이스라엘 민족을 훈련시킬 때 꼭 알려주고 싶은 훈련의 목표가 하나 있었습니다. 그것이 무엇이냐면 사람이 사는 것은 떡으로 사는 게 아니라 하나님의 말씀으로 사는 것이다. 떡이 우리를 먹여 살리는 것 같고 떡이 있어야 우리가 살 수 있는 것이라고 생각하는 그런 이스라엘 민족을 향해서 “떡이 아니다. 떡이 살리는 것이 아니라 하나님의 말씀이 살리는 것”이라고 하는 것을 광야 40년 동안 또 훈련시키고 또 훈련시켰습니다.
특별히 무엇을 가지고 훈련을 시켰냐면 만나라고 하는 것으로 훈련을 시켜주셨습니다. 광야라고 하는 곳은 어떤 곳인가? 광야는 농사를 지을 수 있는 곳이 아닙니다. 우리가 수고하고 애써서 무엇인가 소득을 얻을 수 있는 곳이 아니었습니다. 그곳에서는 먹을 것을 구할 수 있는 방법이 거의 없는 곳이었습니다. 그곳에서 우리가 어떻게 살아갈 수 있을까? 이 40년 동안 광야에 있다면 우리는 결국 죽을 수밖에 없는 것인가? 아무것도 먹지 못하고 망할 것인가 생각되는 그 순간에 하나님께서 만나를 내려주신 것이죠. 그 광야에서 전후좌우를 살펴보면 아무것도 없고 모래밖에 없는데, 황량한 들판만 보이는데 그곳에서 어떻게 살아갈 수 있을까 그때 하나님을 바라보게 만드신 것이 만나입니다.
만나가 내리면 그 만나를 거두어 먹으면서 “오늘도 하나님께서 우리에게 만나를 주셨구나!” 하나님께 감사하면서 그 하루를 보내는 겁니다. 그런데 우리 마음 가운데는 “그럼 내일은 어떡하지?”, “내일 또 만나가 내릴까?”, “내일 만나가 없으면 어떡하지?”, “내일은 아무것도 없으면 무엇을 먹고 사나” 싶은 그 생각이 들어서 사람들은 만나를 거둘 때 하루치만 거두는 것이 아니고 며칠 분을 거두어서 미래를 준비하고 대비하기 위해서 수많은 만나를 거두어들이고 있었는데, 하나님께서 하시는 말씀이 “거두어들이지 말라”, “그냥 오늘 먹을 거 오늘 준비하고 내일은 하나님을 믿고 기다리라”, “내일은 하나님께서 만나를 내려주실 테니까 그 하나님을 바라보고 있어라” 말씀하시고 그냥 내버려 두라는 것이죠.
그런데 어리석은 인간들은 하나님의 말씀을 잘 듣지 못하고 염려가 되고 걱정도 되고 하나님을 온전히 신뢰하지 못해서 만나를 며칠 분을 거두어 두는 겁니다. 하지만 다 썩어버리고 냄새나고 그다음 날 먹을 수 없는 상태가 되었는데, 하나님께서 아니나 다를까 그다음 날에 또 만나를 내려주신 거예요. 그것이 반복되고 또 반복되면서 우리가 사는 건 떡 때문에 사는 게 아니고 하나님이 먹여주시니까 사는구나, 하나님이 살려주시니까 사는 거구나라는 사실을 40년 동안 훈련하고 훈련하면서 그래서 하나님만 바라보고 하나님의 말씀에 순종하며 사는 것이 그 참된 길이고 복된 길이라는 사실을 훈련했던 것이 바로 이스라엘 민족의 훈련 과정이었습니다.
신명기 8장 2절에서 3절 말씀은 이렇게 기록합니다. “네 하나님 여호와께서 이 사십 년 동안에 네게 광야 길을 걷게 하신 것을 기억하라 이는 너를 낮추시며 너를 시험하사 네 마음이 어떠한지 그 명령을 지키는지 지키지 않는지 알려 하심이라 너를 낮추시며 너를 주리게 하시며 또 너도 알지 못하며 네 조상들도 알지 못하던 만나를 네게 먹이신 것은 사람이 떡으로만 사는 것이 아니요 여호와의 입에서 나오는 모든 말씀으로 사는 줄을 네가 알게 하려 하심이니라.” 하나님께서 이스라엘 민족으로 하여금 떡을 먹으니까 배가 부르고 떡을 먹으니까 힘이 솟아오르고 떡을 먹으니까 목숨이 붙어 있는 것 같은 그런 현상만을 보는 이스라엘 민족에게 그것이 아니라 사실은 그 떡이 하나님에게서부터 온 것이라는 것, 그리고 하나님을 바라보아야 한다는 그 교훈을 내려주신 것입니다.
사람이 떡으로 사는 것이 아니라 하나님의 말씀으로 산다는 것은 성경 전체를 통해서 우리들에게 강조해주고 있는 일관적인 말씀입니다. 우리는 떡이 아니라 하나님 때문에 산다. 내 힘으로 사는 것이 아니라 하나님의 은혜로 산다. 하나님의 그 놀라운 은총 때문에 산다는 게 성경 전체에서 가르쳐주는 것인데요. 그런데 우리는 늘 속아 넘어갑니다. “아니야, 그래도 돈이 최고야.” “돈이 있으면 떵떵거리며 살 수 있잖아.” “한번 기마이(기기: 氣前)도 쓸 수 있고.” 돈이 있으면 그냥 마음대로 내가 무엇인가 할 수 있는 그것이 너무나도 갈망이 되어서 그래도 돈이 최고라고 생각하면서 살아가는 겁니다. “아니야, 물질이 많아야 돼”라고 생각하고 있는 것이죠. 좋은 대학에 가고 좋은 직장에 가야 그래야 내가 기를 펴고 살 수 있다고 생각하는 그런 모습이 안타깝게도 우리들의 마음 가운데서 늘 반복되고 또 반복되고 있는 모습입니다.
그런데 이것이 보통 일반 성도님들만 그런 생각을 가지고 있는 것이 아니라 목사님들 중에서도 이런 생각들을 여지없이 드러내는 것 같아서 정말 안타깝게 생각될 때가 많이 있습니다. 종종 제가 카톡 메시지를 받게 되는 경우가 있는데요. 요즘에는 특별히 더 많은 카톡 메시지들이 들어오는 것 같습니다. 그런데 목사님들이 보낸 메시지 가운데 어떤 메시지가 있냐면 이런 메시지가 있어요. “우리나라가 잘사는 것은 박정희 대통령 때문이다. 박정희 대통령 없었으면 우리나라 망했을 것이다”라고 하는 그런 메시지를 저한테 보내줘요. 이런 메시지를 받으면서 굉장히 혼란스럽습니다. 어떤 목사님이 저에게 메시지를 보내주는데 또 무슨 메시지를 보내주냐면 “우리나라에 이승만 없었으면 우리나라가 어떻게 세워질 수 있겠느냐”라고 하는 그런 메시지를 보내주기도 합니다. 물론 나름대로의 어느 정도 공이 있을 것이고 그분들을 추종하는 사람들에게는 그분들의 공로가 어느 정도 있는 것이 사실일 수 있겠습니다. 그리고 그런 생각을 가지고 있다고 해서 조롱할 것도 아니고 존중해 줄 수 있다고 생각합니다.
그런데 이 세상에 돈이 우리를 살리는 게 아니고 하나님이 우리를 살린다고 말해야 될 목사님들에게서 하나님이 아니라 사람이 우리를 살린다, 사람이 우리나라를 살린다는 그런 고백을 듣는 때마다 당혹스럽고 정말 어떻게 해야 될지를 잘 모르겠어요. 모든 사람이 돈이 최고라고 외칠 때, 돈을 벌어야 하고 성공해야 하고 이 세상에서 잘나가야 된다고 그렇게 외칠 때, 하나님의 말씀을 가지고 있는 사람들이 외쳐야 될 말씀이 있다면 “아니다. 돈이 우리를 살리는 것이 아니라 하나님의 말씀이 우리를 살리는 것이고 이 세상에 그 어느 것이 우리를 구원해 주는 것이 아니라 우리의 소망은 오직 예수님밖에 없다”라고 하는 사실을 전해야 될 때인데, 안타깝게도 그렇지 못하는 경우가 너무나도 많이 있고 우리 성도들의 마음 가운데서도 우리가 예배드릴 때는 하나님의 은혜를 이야기하고 하나님의 사랑을 이야기하지만 뒤돌아서면 “그래도 돈이 최고야”, 뒤돌아서면 “그래도 힘 있는 사람이 좋아” 자꾸 이 세상의 것들을 바라보려고 하는 그런 모습을 보이는 경우가 많이 있는데요. 원하기는 우리가 이 하나님의 말씀을 다시 한번 분명하게 우리들의 마음속에 또 새기고 또 새길 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
우리를 살리는 것은 떡이 아니라 하나님이다. 우리는 돈 때문에 사는 것이 아니라 하나님 때문에 산다는 그런 믿음의 고백들이 우리들 가운데 넘쳐날 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
하지만 문제는 우리들의 눈에는 그렇게 보이지 않는다는 데 문제가 있습니다. 현실에 우리가 발을 디디고 사는 이 세상에서는 정말 현실적인 문제이기 때문에 그렇습니다. 우리가 이 세상에서 살아갈 때는 정말 돈이 최고인 것처럼 보이게 되는 것이고 힘 있는 사람이 도움이 되는 것 같고 권력이 최고인 것 같은 그런 느낌을 받을 때가 많이 있기 때문에 그렇습니다. 늘 우리는 그런 환경 속에서 살아가고 있는데요. 그때도 이 세상 전부가 돈이 최고라고 말하고 있는 그 순간에 우리는 하나님의 말씀 앞으로 돌아가야 합니다. 지혜를 얻는 자가, 하나님을 두려워하는 자가 생명을 얻을 것이다. 이게 안 믿어지시면 이걸 좀 믿을 수 있게 해달라고 기도하십시오. 이 말이 참말이라는 그 사실을 우리들이 기억해야 될 줄로 믿습니다.
따라서 우리는 떡으로 사는 것이 아니라 하나님의 말씀으로 살아야 합니다. 방백들을 의지할 것이 아니라 하나님을 의지해야 할 것입니다. 아무리 사람들이 수고하고 애쓴다고 할지라도, 집을 세운다고 할지라도 하나님께서 지으시지 아니하면 하나님께서 돕지 아니하시면 세우는 자의 수고가 헛되다고 하는 그 사실을 분명하게 기억해야 될 줄로 믿습니다.
이사야서 55장 1절 2절 말씀은 이렇게 기록합니다. “오호라 너희 모든 목마른 자들아 물로 나아오라 돈 없는 자도 오라 너희는 와서 사 먹되 돈 없이 값 없이 와서 포도주와 젖을 사라 너희가 어찌하여 양식이 아닌 것을 위하여 은을 달아 주며 배부르게 하지 못할 것을 위하여 수고하느냐 내게 듣고 들을지어다 그리하면 너희가 좋은 것을 먹을 것이며 너희 자신들이 기름진 것으로 즐거움을 얻으리라.” 이 세상의 썩어질 것들, 먹어도 조금 있으면 다 뒤로 나가버리고 다시 허기질 수밖에 없고 마셔도 조금 있으면 또다시 갈증이 있을 수밖에 없는 헛된 것들에 우리가 목숨을 걸며 사는 것이 아니라, 우리를 영원한 생명으로 인도하는 지혜를 얻기 위하여, 하나님을 두려워하는 마음으로 살아가기 위하여 우리 모두가 기도하며 나아가고 이 지혜를 얻을 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
그러면 어떻게 우리가 지혜를 얻을 수 있을까요? 지혜를 얻는 방법에 대해서 32절 말씀, 잠언서 8장 32절 말씀에서는 이렇게 표현합니다. “아들들아 이제 내게 들으라 내 도를 지키는 자가 복이 있느니라.” 32절 말씀 가운데서 이제 내게 **“들으라”**고 하는 말씀에 주목해 보시기 바랍니다. 여기서 말하는 “내”가 누구죠? 지혜입니다. “지혜를 귀 기울여 들으라”고 32절 말씀에서 기록하고 있는데요. 여기서 들으라고 말씀하신 그 표현을 주목해 보면 좋겠는데요. 하나님의 말씀이 주어져 있는데 그 말씀을 우리가 들어야 한다는 겁니다. 하나님의 말씀이 있는데 들어야 지혜를 얻는 것이고 자꾸자꾸 듣고 듣고 또 듣고 또 들어야 지혜가 우리에게 생긴다는 것이죠.
들어야 지혜가 생기고 지혜가 있어야 생명을 얻는다는 것인데요. 왜 우리는 들어야 합니까? 지혜를 얻기 위해서 들어야 할 필요가 왜 있을까요? 왜 우리는 지혜의 말씀에 귀를 기울여서 꼭 들어야만 할까요? 그것은 지금 우리들의 귀에 지혜가 아닌 소리들이 너무나도 많이 계속해서 하루 24시간 내내 일주일 7일 동안 1년 365일 계속해서 지혜가 아닌 소리들이 우리들의 귀에 계속 들려지고 있기 때문에 그렇습니다. 우리는 가만히 있으면 아무것도 안 하는 것이 아니라, 우리가 가만히 있으면 사실은 우리는 이 세상의 가치관에 노출되어 있는 겁니다. 그래서 자꾸만 듣는 겁니다. 자꾸만 들어요. 우리가 매일매일 보는 텔레비전이나 영화나 드라마나 우리들의 대화 가운데서 우리들의 이야기 속에서, 걸어가면서 이 세상의 모든 것들이 우리를 향해서 계속해서 들려주는 이야기가 있는데 그 이야기는 지혜의 말씀이 아니라 지혜와 반대되는 그 말들이 우리들의 귀에 계속해서 들려오고 있기 때문에 그렇습니다.
이스라엘 민족이 가나안 땅에 들어간 다음에, 그렇게 광야 40년 동안 훈련을 받았던 이스라엘 민족이었는데 가나안 땅에 들어가서 타락해버리고 말았습니다. 우상숭배 하는 길로 가버리고 말았습니다. 그래서 하나님의 심판을 받아야 했습니다. 도대체 왜 이스라엘 민족은 가나안 땅에 들어가서 하나님만 잘 믿고 섬기는 그런 삶을 살지 않고 이스라엘 민족이 그 가나안 땅에서 타락해버리고 또 그렇게 우상 숭배의 길로 가버리고 그렇게 돼버린 그 이유가 무엇이겠습니까? 그것은 바로 이 가나안 땅에 있는 이방인들의 가치관에 노출되어 버렸기 때문에 그렇습니다. 문 열고 나가면 이방인들을 만나게 되는데 그 이방인들이 하는 모습이 보이는 겁니다. 매일 보는 거예요. 저 이방인들이 비가 안 오면 바알 신에게 가서 제사 드리는 그 모습을 보는 겁니다. 자꾸 보니까 누가 뭐라고 하지 않아도 그것이 우리들에게 세뇌가 되어서 “아, 이런 경우에는 우리가 우상에게 절해야 되나?” 그러면서 가버리는 거예요.
제가 미국에 있을 때 담배 광고하는 것을 봤는데요. 담배 광고를 하기 위해서 담배 포스터를 가게마다 붙여 놓습니다. 그런데 그 담배 포스터를 어디다 붙여놓냐면 예를 들어서 세븐일레븐이라든가 이런 편의점 있지 않아요? 그런 편의점에 들어가려고 하면 담배 광고들이 꼭 여러 개 붙어 있는데 어디에 붙어 있냐면 허리 아래 부분 높이에 붙어 있습니다. “말보로” 해가지고 빨간 자극적으로 눈에 확 들어오는 디자인에 담배 광고가 붙어 있는데, 제 눈높이에 붙어 있는 것이 아니라 허리 아래 정도에 붙어 있어요. 왜 거기다 붙여놨을까요? 아이들의 손을 잡고 편의점에 들어가면 아이들이 편의점 문에서 말보로 담배 광고를 먼저 보는 겁니다. 어른들이 피우는 저 담배 “말보로”라는 게 있구나! 매일매일 편의점을 들락날락거리면서 매일매일 그 담배 광고를 보면서 들어가는 겁니다. 그렇게 1년 365일 광고하고 있는 그 광고의 힘 앞에 학교에서 한 학기에 겨우 몇 시간 “너희들 담배 피우면 안 된다”라고 가르치는 게 힘을 잃어버리는 겁니다. 결국 아이들이 커서 그쪽으로 빠져가는 거예요.
그런데 그게 담배 광고만이 아니에요. 담배 광고만이 아니고 지금 우리들이 살아가고 있는 이 삶에서 계속해서 끊임없이 끊임없이 광고가 되고 있습니다. 우리들의 마음을 세뇌시키고 있습니다. 돈을 벌어야 된다, 이 세상의 것들을 추구해야 된다, 이 세상의 방식대로 살아야 된다라고 하는 광고들을 계속해서 끊임없이 주입받고 있고 우리 아이들이 학교에 가면 학교에서 친구들에 의해서 계속해서 세뇌당하고 있습니다. 엄청난 세뇌가 계속해서 되고 있는 그 상황 가운데서 결국 우리가 어떻게 믿음을 가질 수 있고 지혜를 얻을 수 있는가? 오늘 성경 말씀은 이렇게 이야기합니다. “들으라.” “지혜를 들어라.” 하나님의 말씀을 들어야 하는 것이죠.
32절에서 이렇게 이야기합니다. “아들들아 이제 내게 들으라.” 33절에서 말합니다. “훈계를 들어서 지혜를 얻으라.” 34절에서 말합니다. “누구든지 내게 들으며” 듣고 듣고 들어야 그래야 이 악의 세뇌에서부터 벗어날 수가 있는 것이죠.
그런데 문제는 물리적으로 많이 듣는 것만으로는 부족할 수 있다고 하는 것입니다. 많이 들으면 일단은 좋기는 좋습니다. 하지만 많이 듣는 것보다도 더 중요한 게 있습니다. 그것이 무엇일까요? 그것은 묵상하는 것입니다. 과연 하나님께서 우리들에게 무엇을 원하시고 계시는지 하나님의 마음을 헤아리고 묵상하는 것이 훨씬 더 중요합니다. 그러니까 성경을 많이 읽어서 일독을 하고 몇십 독을 하고 어떤 사람은 성경 전체를 다 쓰기도 하고 암송을 하기도 하고 정말 우리가 성경을 사랑하는 방법이 다양한데, 어떤 방법을 하든지 많이 하는 것은 아주 중요한 일인데요. 그런데 그렇게 많이 하는 것보다도 훨씬 더 중요한 게 무엇이냐면 묵상하는 것이죠.
안타깝게도 많은 사람들이 난독증이 있어서 많이 읽기는 읽는데 무슨 뜻인지 모르는 경우가 굉장히 많더라고요. 예전에 제가 어떤 한 학생을 봤는데요. 그 학생의 어머니가 책 읽으라고 숙제를 내줬습니다. 방 안에 들어가서 엄마가 읽으라는 대로 책을 다 읽었어요. 다 읽고 “엄마 나 책 다 읽었어요” 하고 나오는 거예요. “그래, 네가 책을 벌써 다 읽었구나. 그러면 그 책이 도대체 무슨 얘기 하더냐?” 물어보니까 몰라요. 읽기는 읽는데 거기서 무슨 얘기 했는지 주인공이 누구인지 아무것도 모르는, 소리 내서 읽긴 읽었는데 마음에까지 오지 않은 거죠.
그런데 안타깝게도 우리 크리스천들 중에는 말씀을 읽기도 많이 하고 쓰기도 하고 암송을 하기도 하고 듣기도 하는데, 정작 하나님이 무슨 말씀 하시는지 모르는 분들이 많아요. 하나님께서 우리에게 무엇을 원하시는지 분명하게 이 성경에서 말씀해 주고 계셨는데 그 말씀과는 전혀 딴판의 삶을 사는 거예요. 적어도 우리가 하나님의 말씀을 읽었다면 하나님께서 우리에게 무엇을 요구하시는지를 알아야 할 거 아니에요? 미워하면 안 되잖아요? 용서해야만 하잖아요? 사랑하며 살아야 되잖아요? 양보하며 살아야 되잖아요? 다른 사람들을 배려하며 살아야죠! 겸손해져야죠! 그런데 그거 하고 아무 관계없이 삶을 살아요. 그냥 종교적인 행동을 많이 했다는 교만한 마음으로 바리새인처럼 살아가요. 그러면 그게 읽는 게 무슨 의미가 있어요? 아무런 의미가 없어요.
그래서 오늘 우리들의 기도의 제목은 들어야 되는 것인데, 여기서 들으라는 이야기는 그냥 들으라는 얘기가 아니에요. 하나님의 말씀을 잘 듣고 깨닫고 이해하고 그 하나님의 말씀대로 따라 살 것을 말하는 표현으로서 “들으라.” “여보 아기 좀 봐” 그러면 아기만 보고 있는 게 보는 게 아니잖아요. 아기를 본다는 이야기는 울면 달래주고 배고프면 먹여주고 기저귀를 갈아줘야 하면 갈아줘야 되고 그게 아기를 보는 거잖아요? 들으라는 이야기는 하나님의 말씀 틀어놓고 들으면서 딴짓하라는 이야기가 아니라, 그 하나님께서 우리들에게 무엇을 원하시는지 내가 어떻게 살기를 원하시는지 하나님의 마음을 “알아가라.” 그래서 묵상해야 되는 것이고 하나님을 더욱더 조금씩 더 알아가라는 이야기입니다.
예수님께서는 겟세마네 동산에서 하나님 앞에 기도하며 엎드렸습니다. 기도하는 가운데 “하나님 할 수만 있으면 이 십자가의 잔을 내가 마시지 않을 수 있다면 마시지 않게 해달라”라고 기도했습니다. 하지만 우리 예수님께서는 기도하는 것 이상으로 하나님께서 자기에게 무슨 말씀을 하시기를 원하시는지를 더 민감하게 귀를 기울였고, 하나님께서는 “네가 십자가를 지라”라고 하시는 그 말씀, 그것이 주님을 버리시는 말씀이 아니라 사실은 사랑하시는 말씀이었고, 그래서 그 하나님의 말씀에 철저하게 순종하며 믿음의 길을 나아간 줄로 믿습니다.
원하기는 저와 여러분들이 하나님을 두려워하는 것이 지혜고 그게 생명의 길이라는 것을 확실하게 다시 한번 되새길 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 우리 밖으로 나가면 정반대의 이야기들을 더 많이 들을 겁니다. 그러나 다시 하나님의 말씀을 보면서 아니다, 하나님이 우리를 살린다, 하나님이 우리의 소망이다, 우리를 사랑하사 그 아들을 십자가에 내어주신 주님이 살길이라는 믿음의 그 확신들이 마음속에서 넘쳐날 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
The Fear of God: The Path to True Life
In today’s Word, we see that those who gain wisdom gain life. It says that those who find wisdom will obtain favor from Jehovah. Where is this expressed? It is expressed in the words of verse 35. Shall we read it together? “For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord.”
What is this “me” referring to here? It is wisdom. What will those who find wisdom obtain? They will obtain “life.” What will those who find wisdom obtain? It says they will obtain “favor from Jehovah.”
Then, what happens if one fails to gain wisdom and loses it? The exact opposite result will occur. Verse 36 records it this way. Let us read this together as well. “But he who fails to find me injures himself; all who hate me love death.” Here again, who or what is “me”? It is wisdom. What will happen if you lose wisdom? You will injure your own soul. But what does it mean to “lose wisdom”? How does one lose wisdom? It means not loving wisdom. Even when wisdom is spoken to you, you do not act according to those words but go the opposite way. Since wisdom isn’t something you can misplace like a physical object, what on earth does it mean to lose it? Losing wisdom means having the words of wisdom right there, yet not living by them and choosing the opposite path instead. It means not loving it. It means disliking the words of wisdom when they are heard. Today’s passage in Proverbs chapter 8 teaches us that if we do not live according to wisdom, our souls will suffer eternal harm and eventually lead us to the path of death. What is the meaning of this message? It is literal. It means that wisdom is truly important.
What is wisdom? It is not anything else but the fear of God. It is said that fearing God is wisdom. I have told you that wisdom is living in obedience to God’s Word, following as He tells us, and knowing how to fear God, realizing that great calamity will befall us if we do not live by His Word. The passage today teaches us that we must live fearing God in this way to obtain life.
This message, which expresses that one must find wisdom to find life—how can we understand this if we rephrase it? The idea that we find life through wisdom means that we cannot find life through anything other than wisdom. For example, through what things can we not find life? It refers to everything in this world. All the things we think might save us, give us strength, or be our hope—none of those things give us life.
We often think that money will give us life. So we think, “I wish I had a lot of money,” or “If only I had money, my problems would be solved.” However, in today’s text, what does it mean that the one who finds wisdom finds life? It means that life cannot be obtained through money. Furthermore, we think that entering a prestigious university will make us happy. We think that getting into a good university is how we receive blessings and find life, but that is not the case. We think that gaining popularity in this world is good and receiving the applause of people is good, but today’s Scripture is not saying that. I pray in the name of the Lord that you clearly remember this fact: it is not those things that save us, it is not money that saves us, and it is not anything of this world that saves us—but wisdom saves us, and the one who finds wisdom finds life.
The people of Israel had a period of training for forty years in the wilderness. From their liberation from the land of Egypt, crossing the Red Sea, until they entered the land of Canaan, they had to spend forty years in the wilderness. This forty-year period in the wilderness was a training ground where God trained the people of Israel over and over and over again. However, when God was training them during these forty years, there was one specific goal of this training that He desperately wanted them to know. That goal was this: that man does not live by bread alone, but by the Word of God. Toward those Israelites who thought that bread fed them and that they could only live if they had bread, God trained them again and again for forty years to teach them, “It is not bread. It is not bread that saves you, but the Word of God that saves you.”
Specifically, He trained them using something called manna. What kind of place is the wilderness? The wilderness is not a place where you can farm. It was not a place where we could gain some kind of income through our own toil and effort. It was a place where there were almost no ways to obtain food. How can we survive in such a place? Are we destined to die if we stay in the wilderness for forty years? At that very moment, when they wondered if they would perish without eating anything, God sent down manna. When you look around in the wilderness—front, back, left, and right—there is nothing but sand; you see only a desolate field. Manna was what made them look toward God in that place, wondering how they could possibly survive.
When the manna fell, they would gather and eat it, spending the day thanking God, saying, “God has given us manna again today!” However, in our hearts, thoughts like, “Then what about tomorrow?”, “Will manna fall again tomorrow?”, or “What if there is no manna tomorrow? What will we eat and how will we live if there is nothing tomorrow?” would arise. Because of this, when people gathered manna, they wouldn’t gather just one day’s worth; they would gather several days’ worth to prepare and brace for the future. But God said, “Do not store it up,” “Just prepare for today what you will eat today and wait, trusting in God for tomorrow,” and “Since God will send down manna tomorrow, keep your eyes on Him,” telling them to just leave it be.
Yet, foolish humans do not listen well to God’s Word; they become anxious and worried, and because they cannot fully trust God, they gather several days’ worth of manna. However, it all rotted and smelled, becoming inedible the next day. Then, sure enough, God sent down manna again the following day. As this was repeated over and over, the people of Israel went through a training process for forty years, learning the fact that we do not live because of bread, but because God feeds us—we live because God sustains us. Thus, they were trained to realize that looking only to God and living in obedience to His Word is the true and blessed path.
Deuteronomy 8:2–3 records the following: “And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”
God gave this lesson to the people of Israel, who saw only the outward phenomenon—that their bellies were full because they ate bread, that their strength surged because they ate bread, and that their lives were sustained because they ate bread—to show them that this was not the case, but that the bread had actually come from God, and that they must look to Him.
That man does not live by bread alone but by the Word of God is a consistent message emphasized to us throughout the entire Bible. We live not because of bread, but because of God. We live not by our own strength, but by the grace of God. That we live because of His wondrous favor is what the entire Scripture teaches us. However, we are constantly deceived. We think, “No, money is still the best.” “If I have money, I can live large.” “I can even show off a bit.” We long so much for the ability to do whatever we want if we just have money, so we live thinking money is everything. We believe that we must have many material possessions. We think that only by getting into a good university or finding a good job can we walk with our heads held high—and sadly, this pattern repeats in our hearts over and over again.
It is truly heart-wrenching to see that it is not just the general congregation who thinks this way, but even among pastors, these thoughts are revealed without hesitation. Occasionally, I receive KakaoTalk messages, and lately, it seems even more of them are coming in. Among the messages sent by pastors, there are those that say things like: “Our country is prosperous because of President Park Chung-hee. Without President Park, our nation would have perished.” Receiving such messages makes me very confused. Another pastor might send me a message saying, “Without Syngman Rhee, how could our nation have even been established?” Of course, they may have their own merits, and for those who follow them, it may be true that their contributions carry significant weight. I do not believe such thoughts should be mocked; they can be respected.
Every time I hear a confession from pastors—who should be proclaiming that it is not money but God who sustains us—saying that man saves us or that a person saved our country, I feel bewildered and truly at a loss for what to do. At a time when everyone shouts that money is supreme, that we must make money, succeed, and get ahead in this world, those who hold the Word of God should be shouting, “No. It is not money that saves us, but the Word of God. Nothing in this world can save us; our only hope is Jesus Christ.” Sadly, there are too many instances where this is not the case. Even among our congregation, we speak of God’s grace and love during worship, but the moment we turn away, we think, “Still, money is the best,” or “Powerful people are better,” constantly looking toward the things of this world. My desire and prayer in the name of the Lord is that we may etch this Word of God clearly into our hearts once again.
It is God, not bread, who sustains us. I pray in the name of the Lord that confessions of faith—that we live not because of money but because of God—will overflow among us.
However, the problem is that it does not appear that way to our eyes. This is because we live with our feet planted in this world, where these are very practical issues. In our daily lives, money truly seems supreme, powerful people seem helpful, and authority feels like everything. We are constantly living in such an environment. Even then, in the very moment the whole world says money is best, we must return to the Word of God. The one who gains wisdom, the one who fears God, will gain life. If you find this hard to believe, please pray for the faith to believe it. We must remember the fact that these words are the truth.
Therefore, we must live not by bread but by the Word of God. We must rely not on princes but on God. No matter how much people toil and labor, even if they build a house, we must clearly remember the truth that if God does not build it and if God does not help, the builder’s labor is in vain.
Isaiah 55:1-2 records: “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.” Let us not stake our lives on the vanishing things of this world—things that pass through us shortly after eating or leave us thirsty shortly after drinking. Instead, I pray in the name of the Lord that we all move forward in prayer to obtain the wisdom that leads to eternal life and to live with a heart that fears God.
Then, how can we obtain wisdom? Regarding the method of gaining wisdom, Proverbs 8:32 expresses it this way: “And now, O sons, listen to me: blessed are those who keep my ways.” Please take note of the word “listen” in verse 32. Who is the “me” here? It is wisdom. Verse 32 tells us to listen attentively to wisdom. I would like you to focus on the expression “listen.” It means that when God’s Word is given, we must hear it. Since the Word of God exists, we must listen to it to gain wisdom, and as we listen again and again, wisdom is formed within us.
Hearing leads to wisdom, and wisdom leads to life. But why must we listen? Why is it necessary to listen to gain wisdom? Why must we bend our ears and listen to the words of wisdom? It is because, right now, our ears are constantly filled with sounds that are not wisdom—24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. If we simply remain still, we are not doing “nothing”; rather, we are being exposed to the values of this world. And so, we keep hearing. We hear it through the television, movies, and dramas we watch every day, through our conversations, and as we walk through the world. Everything in this world is constantly telling us a story, and those stories are not words of wisdom, but words that oppose wisdom.
After the people of Israel entered the land of Canaan—the same people who had been trained for 40 years in the wilderness—they fell into corruption. They turned toward idolatry. Consequently, they had to face God’s judgment. Why did they fail to live a life of faithful service to God and instead turn to idols after entering Canaan? It was because they were exposed to the values of the Gentiles in that land. The moment they opened their doors, they encountered Gentiles and saw their way of life. They saw it every day. They saw those Gentiles offering sacrifices to Baal when it wouldn’t rain. By constantly seeing this, even if no one said a word, they became brainwashed: “Oh, in this situation, should we bow to an idol?” And so, they went that way.
When I was in the United States, I saw cigarette advertisements. To advertise, they would put up posters in every store. For instance, at convenience stores like 7-Eleven, these ads were always posted, but they were specifically placed at a height below the waist. The “Marlboro” ads, with their sharp, red, eye-catching designs, were not at my eye level but around waist height. Why were they placed there? It was so that when children entered the store holding their parents’ hands, they would be the first to see the Marlboro ad. They would see that there is something called “Marlboro” that adults smoke. Day after day, as they went in and out of the store, they saw that advertisement. Against the power of an ad seen 365 days a year, the few hours of “you shouldn’t smoke” taught in school for one semester lose all their strength. Eventually, as the children grow, they are drawn in that direction.
But it’s not just cigarette ads. In the lives we are living now, there is constant and endless advertising. Our hearts are being brainwashed. We are being injected with the message that we must make money, pursue worldly things, and live according to worldly ways. When our children go to school, they are constantly brainwashed by their peers. In a situation where such immense brainwashing is taking place, how can we ultimately have faith and gain wisdom? Today, the Scripture says: “Listen.” “Listen to wisdom.” We must listen to the Word of God.
Verse 32 says, “And now, O sons, listen to me.” Verse 33 says, “Hear instruction and be wise.” Verse 34 says, “Blessed is the one who listens to me.” We must listen and listen and listen to escape the brainwashing of evil.
However, the problem is that simply hearing a lot physically might not be enough. While hearing a lot is good, there is something even more important. What is it? It is meditation. It is far more important to discern what God wants from us and to meditate on His heart. There are various ways to love the Bible—some read it through once or dozens of times, some transcribe the entire text, and some memorize it. Doing these things often is very important. But even more important than the quantity is the act of meditation.
Sadly, many people suffer from a kind of “reading blindness”; they read a lot but have no idea what it means. I once saw a student whose mother gave him a reading assignment. He went into his room and read the book exactly as his mother told him. When he finished, he said, “Mom, I read the whole thing.” She asked, “Oh, you’re finished already? Then tell me, what was the book about?” He didn’t know. He read the words aloud, but he didn’t know the story or who the protagonist was. The message didn’t reach his heart.
Regrettably, among us Christians, there are many who read the Word, write it out, memorize it, and listen to it, yet they do not know what God is actually saying. God has clearly told us what He wants in this Bible, yet people live lives completely unrelated to those words. If we have read God’s Word, shouldn’t we at least know what He requires of us? We shouldn’t hate; we must forgive. We must live in love. We must live by yielding to others, by being considerate, and by becoming humble. Yet, many live lives having nothing to do with these things. They live like Pharisees, with proud hearts because they have performed many religious acts. If that’s the case, what meaning is there in reading? It is meaningless.
So, our prayer topic for today is to “listen,” but this doesn’t just mean to hear. It is an expression that means to hear God’s Word well, realize it, understand it, and live according to it. When someone says, “Honey, watch the baby,” just staring at the baby isn’t “watching” them. Watching a baby means soothing them if they cry, feeding them if they are hungry, and changing their diaper if needed. That is truly watching the baby. To “listen” does not mean to play the Word of God in the background while doing something else; it means to “come to know” God’s heart—what He wants from us and how He wants us to live. This is why we must meditate and come to know God a little more, day by day.
Jesus knelt before God in prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. In His prayer, He said, “Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me.” But more than just praying, our Jesus listened sensitively to what God wanted to say to Him. He realized that the command “You must take up the cross” was not a word of abandonment, but a word of love. I believe that He walked the path of faith in absolute obedience to that Word of God.
My prayer in the name of the Lord is that you and I will once again firmly realize that fearing God is wisdom and the path to life. When we go outside, we will hear the opposite stories much more often. But as we look at God’s Word again, let us be filled with the conviction of faith that it is not money but God who saves us, God who is our hope, and the Lord—who gave His Son to the cross because He loved us—who is our way to live.
